Transport at a reasonable price from new local business West Swindon now has its very own private hire car company.

West Side Private Hire was launched in mid-January by brothers Andy and Sandy Jack, from Eastleaze and Toothill respectively.

Initially, they will have one car and a seven seater minibus on the road offering private hire from 7.30am through to midnight. They hope to go 24 hours in the near future.

Being based in the west and serving the 30,000 people here means that West Side will be able offer favourable rates to local people.

Anybody without a car who has tried to make a trip across West Swindon knows how difficult it can be. It's a wait fora bus or it can be a long hilly walk in all weathers.

"1 think people in the west get a raw deal price-wise," said Andy Jack. "Most private hire companies make a minimum charge for commg outof the town centre, even for short distances. Butwe'redmp-

ping this 'plus mileage' charge so that West Swindon people can travel around the area at a reasonable price."

Dads positive group launched Anew group for fathers advertised in the December edition of The Link has found its first members and is looking for more.

The dads group is the idea of community worker Pam Pixton who was concerned that there may be men who care for young children during the day who do not have the chance to get together with others, and their children may be isolated.

Martyn Blythman from Toothill said he works shift and had the time to bring his daughter Hannah to the group.

Paul Dixon brought his daughter Miranda because she could mix with others and he could chat with other fathers. "It's nice to get out of the house and to meet other people," he said.

Tony Haimes from Pinehurst said the group had been talking about sharing childcare at their meetings to allow other members to go swimming or shopping.

Pam Pixton said the group offers men the chance to help each other out.

"More and more men have equal or first responsibility for children. This group is a good way of sharing ideas and knowledge about bringing them up. It's also a good place for children to meet each other and play together."

Singer wins award

A singer from Grange Park is very pleased that at the age of 65 she is able to win awards for her efforts.

Dorothea Nicholls, pictured below, from Loughborough Close won a Gold medal in the light opera section and a bronze in the opera category at the Maidenhead MusicFestival in November.

She has always sungand is a member of Swindon Opera. She first entered the competition in 1991 thinking that she would not have many more chances. "I was delighted that at my age I could come away with medals. I want to keep singing foras long as possible and to keep winning."

Freshbrook Ladybirds Parent and Toddler group have spaces for new members at their Monday meeting, 130pm to 330pm in Freshbrook Community Centre.

There is a charge of 70p per family which covers refreshments.

The group has a selection of push along and ride-on toys, and also a quiet, supervised, craft table.

On 4 January the Westlea home of fifteen year old Jamie Thompson (pictured right), a student at Greendown School, was decked with balloons and a 'Well Done' banner to celebrate his return from Ontario in Canada where he, along with nineteen other boys, represented Great Britain in the 'Riverside Christmas Ice Hockey Tournament'.

Jamie, who has been playing ice hockey for almost five years, plays for the Swindon Leopards and has appeared for the Wild Cats and Cougars. During the summer months he was chosen to attend trials in Basingstoke and was selected for the 'Schoolof Excellence'. Forty boys were chosen in all and following further trials the numbers were reduced to twenty five and finally twenty. Jamie, who is net minder, was one of the final group of twenty boys chosen to represent Great Britain in Canada.

On Boxing Day the team left for their ten day trip to Ontario. They had four matches to play in the tournament plus several friendly matches. The Great Britain team beat off strong opposition from we teams from Canada, USA and Sweden and won the Tournament, with each member of the winning team receiving a commemorative medal and plaque.

A very exhilarated Jamie Thompson returned to a warm welcome home from his delighted family who feel so proud of the part he played in the British under sixteen ice hockey team.

Carols for cancer research

In the week before Christmas three thirteen year old Ridgeway school girls from Westlea, Yvonne and Karen Trevascus and their friend Kelly Morland spent two evenings carol singing around the houses in Westlea to raise money for cancer research. Theirchoral efforts raised ÂŁ32.

Lost a Cat? Sheila Mitchell asks:

Can anyone in the Westlea area can identify my feline 'lodger'?

He is a medium sized black and white male cat who has obviously been very well looked after. His front legs and shoulders are white.

He has a small black patch on the back of his right leg. The top of his head, his ears and over his eyes are black, his nose is white with a black 'splodge' at the end. Under his chin there is triangle of black. His back is black and his tummy and top of his back legs are white. He has large black markings on his back legs but all his paws are white.

He has been around Moresby Close since the summer but only since the really bad weather has he based himself in my garden, sleeping in a kennel under the trees. He is extremely friendly and affectionate and loves company - his only antisocial habit being that he 'sprays' thus leaving a rather pungent aroma in his wake - something which a trip to the vet would quickly eradicate.

Diners Club

We had our Christmas party on 14 December and I hope all who attended enjoyed themselves. We had competitions, a raffle and lots of refreshments. We were entertained by Lydiard Hand Chimes, and had the opportunity of trying out the chimes ourselves afterwards. I don't think we'll be asked to join the group! It was a very pleasant evening, our thanks to all who came along.

We handed our cheque to Libby Shepherd for the Swindon Deaf Children's Society, and were assured it would be going to good use later that week when the children were being taken on a Christmas trip.

Children's books on offer Christine Owen reviews the kids collection

writing and illustration. It tells a very simple story of a lazy farmer who !eaves all his work to a long suffering duck while he lies around in bed all day eating chocolates.

Eventually, of course, the animals take their revenge and the duck is freed from his drudgery. It is beautifully illustrated and even the pictures on the inside covers reflect the sad beginning and happy ending to the story. Martin Waddell's new picture book 'Pig in the pond' is also highly recommended - the picture of the entire farm, animals, farmer and all in the village pond is wonderful.

In the past few years a publisher called Dorling Kindersley has become very prolific and has found a successful formula for high quality illustrated books. They began by producing richly illustrated information books on a whole range of subjects for older children and adults; more recently they have produced books for younger children.

The young picture books are all illustrated with perfect, clear photographs on a plain white background clude 'A walk in the park', Through and tell a story or inform far better the magic mirror', 'The visitors who than words. 'Our new kitten' for instance is a story and information came to stay' and 'Piggybook'. book in which two children choose a new kitten, bring it home and learn how to look after it, feed it, play with it and so on. There is a lot of 'ahh isn't that lovely' about these books, but they are never twee or tasteless.

Finally a picture book for much older children. Everyone has come across Raymond Briggs, creator of As promised, my column this month looks at children's books. I have to confess that mymain area of interest and knowledge is picture books.

If you do not have children or who have not seen a picture book since your distant childhood, can I suggest you take a look at some, you will be surprised at their quality.

They provide a much better escape than most adult books! Here are some of my favourites which you will find at West Swindon.

One of the best known and most prolific author/illustrator of children's books is Anthony Browne; one of his best books is 'Gorilla'. The book is the story of Hannah who loved gorillas and longed for her father to take her to the zoo to see them; but like many dads he was too busy and also too dull. But on Hannah's birthday something very strange happens and her greatest wish comes true in a very unusual way. Like all Anthony Browne books the pictures have to be studied very closely because strange things happen in them. Other Browne books to look out for in-

Christine Owen with items from the Wiltshire schools exhibition I am also very fond of books by Tony Ross. The best one 'I'm coming to get you' plays on a child's fear of monsters in a frightening tale which ends very happily and in a surprising way. Most children love being scared but this book is written to finish the story in a way which removes all the fear. It is great fun to read aloud! Tony Ross has written a number of books about situations with which childrenare familiar, for instance 'Oscar got the blame' about imaginary friends,and has also written modern versions of well known stories like Hansel and Crete!, Puss in Boots and Jack and the Beanstalk.

One of the most successful picture books of the last couple of years is Martin Waddell's 'Fanner Duck' which won a string of awards for

2 inches tall, demanding, bad tempered and rude. But overa period of 5days afterappearinginJohn's bedroom, the two develop a touching relationship. Funny, thought provoking and very unusual, Raymond Briggs has created another classic.

The Wiltshire Art Teacher's Association display will be in the library until 6 February. Do come in to see it; it is one of the best displays we have had here for some time.

The artistic talents of Wiltshire school children is tremendous.

For the rest of February we have a display by the Wiltshire Buildings Record which shows examples of different buildings in Wiltshire and how they can help the historian.

The display is organised by the Museum Service who have a huge range of material so it should be worth seeing. We also have a display on the history and attractions of Lydiard Park which should help with the homework enquiries we have had recently.

This month a Faith Sharing team will be spending a weekend with West Swindon churches. The team comes from St Andrew's, Chorleywood, an Anglican Church which for several years has been learning more about giving God space to work directly in us. Now they come to share their understanding with US.

Sometimes there can be a gap between what christians know about God and our direct experience of Him. Faith can fall through the gap.

But God expects todeal directly with us - after all, his Holy Spirit lives in us. But we need to allow Him to do

what He wants to do.

Murder and mystery from Shaw writer A bid to become a film reviewer for The Link magazine earlier this year has started Paul Hayden from Shaw on the path of writing murder mysteries for amateur sleuths to solve.

We were not able to take up his offer, but for film buff Paul, a sales trainer for Allied Dunbar, an idea started to develop in his mind.

Heand his wifehave takenpart in five murder mystery weekends at remote country hotels where guests just happen to drop dead and the others have to solve the mysteries that enfold them. He had been encouraged to write a script by one of the actors at a weekend earlier in the year and he started working on a theme.

His weekend is set in 1927 when talking pictures first appeared.

Ranjit has a fast developing interests in Indian arts, Asian womens' fashions and made to measure leather jackets.

He spent six months in India last year studying Indian art and researching whether there is a market for such work in this country.

Ranjit has made contact with artists who work in Hindu Rajput, Moughal and Persian styles and can supply paintings depicting scenes fromlndian mythology and history, religious figures and wildlife.

The paintings range from miniatures to large works to fill a wall.

All are painted on silk using natural paint which has been ground by hand. In many of the works, the figures and especially elephants are decorated with gold leaf. The paintings are delicate and precisely made and will give an interesting dimension to any living room.

Ranjit is also a mine of information on Indian history and can describe the scenes depicted within the paintings.

His artist contacts can also faithfully reproduce photographs of family members, loved ones or pets.

From Monday 15- Friday 19 February, for just £5 per day (90p Gold Card), Lincoln Bear will be waiting to meet anyone from the age of 5-12 years, on his Holiday Camp. He will ensure that from 930am 330pm each day, everyone will have a fun packed holiday. Located on the upper floor of the centre, the Health Suite was extensively renovated last year and a range of new equipment installed to make getting fit even more fun.

The Health Suite has three main fitness areas. There are 7 PulsesStar stations, each designed to work partcular muscle groups, and a selection of free weights, light ones to tone up muscles or heavier ones for the serious bodybuilder. Then there are three aerobic machines which increase heart and lung workrate and generally increase stamina After the hard work, the Health Suite is also the place to be to relax and unwind. There'sa sauna,jacuzzi and sunbeds to ease those stiff muscles and let you leave feeling ready to face the world anew.

The sauna and jacuzzi are included in the price of using the keep fit equipment, but sunbed sessions are booked individually. And if you buy six sessions, one of them is free.

Year 9 students at Greendown School have been congratulated by a panel of judges for theirhigh standard of work.

Managers from WH Smith, J Sainsbury, Interface Graphics and Arosa signmakers judged design technology work by thirteen year olds as part of a 'Design in the High Street' module. Teams of students had to consider the problems businesses have in designing shops and marketing products.

Many teams looked at the packaging and presentation of pop artists featuring record covers in their designs, but the winning group took a practical approach and came up

with a project promoting pens, pencils and stationery.

Team member Katie Thorpe said she and her four colleagues deliberately did not use music as a theme.

"We were given a brief and a range of ideas we could try. We questioned other students about what people buy at WH Smith and put ourdesigns ma project folder. Then we made large pencils, clipboards and writing paper and arranged it attractively."

Leader of the judging panel Marlyn Phillips of WH Smith said the panel had been very impressed by the ideas and the designs that the

year group had come up with. "We thought the work was by much older pupils. We all agreed that the winning entry could be transferred into a shop window straight away."

TechnologycoordinatorChrisGill said he was very pleased by the support of local companies. Their involvement gave students an awareness of what goes on in the world beyond school.

The next design project for Greendown Year9 students involves local members of the Engineering Council who will be working with students on ideas for moving technology.

Dilemmas facing British Asians Recently Doug Robertson hit the headlines because his girlfriend Rabina didn't return from a family trip to Pakistan.

Rabina went on holiday totally unaware that her family had arranged a marriage for her. It is unlikely that Rabina will be returning to England in the near future.

Through his recent experience Doug has become much more aware of the personal dilemmas that face some second and third generation Asian people in Britain today. So

along with local Community Worker, Miriam Minty, he plans to set up a support group.

It will be open to young people who may be experiencing difficulties fitting into two cultures, who may not be able to make choices about their own relationships and who may feel that they have little control over their own lives.

The role of the group will be to listen, support and help individuals sort through the problems they may be experiencing.

Doug and Miriam would like to hear from people who may have had similar experiences they wish to share, or from people who feel they could help the group in any way.

The first meeting will be on Tuesday 23 March at 7.30pm at the Community Suite in the Link Centre, West Swindon.

Fund on target to help children Pizza Hut at Shaw Ridge Leisure Park are doing their bit to help abused children in Swindon.

The restaurant pined the NSPCC off-shoot Swindon Business Cares for Children when it was funned a year ago and has been raising cash to contribute to an overall target of 50,000 which will be used to renovate and furnish a house where abused children can be cared for.

Pizza Hut raised £1,500 in the second half of last year and added a further 30 as a result of customer donations over the Christmas period when carols were sung, youngsters visited Santa in his grotto and special children's cocktails were sold.

Receiving the cheque from Pizza Hut duty manager Heidi Dyson, Swindon Business Cares for Children treasurer Dudley Cook said the fund raised £125,000 last year and was on target to achieve its aim.

In the coming months a gala dance is being planned, another show at the Wyvern to follow up the success of the Julian Clary event in December is being considered and further support from GWR is hoped for.

Ann Billingham, Thamesdown's Recycling Officer, will be writing articles on recycling and other issues of environmental concern for The Link Getting to grips with Christmas Cards Do you ever think about how much we spend on Christmas cards each year and what a waste it seems to just throw them away. And not only Christmas cards, but all sorts of greetings cards - Mothers Day, Fathers Day, birthday etc.

The Christmas card campaign is a national recydingscheme organised jointly by Boots the Chemist and the Countryside Commission. The proceeds from it will be used to fund tree planting in England's 12 Community Forests -of which, the Great Western Community Forest is based in Thamesdown.

To collect Christmas cards locally, Swindon primary schools were asked to help and a special collection organised on 14 January.

Thank you to all those children who brought their cards into the following schools: ToothillPrimary, Westlea Primary, Shaw Ridge, Windmill Hill, Freshbmok, Oliver Tomnkins Infants and Junior, Brook Field and Tregoze. And well done Freshbrook who collected the most of any primary school in the whole of Swindon! Approximately 3 tonnes of cards were collected and sent off to Severnside Waste Paper Co for repulping into new card.

If you didn't manage to take your cards along to school, don't forget, recycling boxes are still available at Boots stores until the end of March.

Make good use of cans You may have, noticed that a Save A Can Bank suddenly appeared in the of carpark Sainsburys, Bridgemead duringJanuaiy.

This is because British Steel Tinplate and ' Sainsburys have together launched a major initiative called 'Carry the Can' to encourage Sainsburys customers to save all their cans for recycling.

Did you know: • 2 out of every 3 cans found on supermarket shelves are made of tin plated steel.

• About 500,000 tonnes of tinplated steel can are sold every year in the UK • To make 10 tonnes of iron (to turn into steel): 5 tonnes of coke is burnt, 16 tonnes of imported iron ore and 1.5 tonnes of lime stone are used, over 15 tonnes of carbon dioxide is released • Multiply these figures by 50,000 and think about it After removing the thin layer of tin by a special process, the steel cans can be recycled into new steel products, (there are 2 de-tinning plants in UK, in Hartlepool and in South Wales).

Recycling steel saves resources, reduces energy consumption, reduces pollution and prevents waste.

The Save A Can Bank welcomes all food and pet food cans as well as all drinks cans. Please remember to rinse out food cans well and squash them if you can before depositing in the Bank.

So don't forget - Carry the Can!

Due to the lack of a transfer station to bulk up cans and the high haulage costs of the steel cans to the de-tinning plant compared with the low residual (financial) value, the Council's existing public can bank network has been developed to target drink cans only. The Council is hoping that the initiative being taken

by British Steel Tinplate to subsidise Save A Can Banks atSwindon's two major Sainsbury stores, will assist the progression to targeting and recycling all cans throughout Thamesdown.

Furniture wanted The Furniture Cabin at Penhill Neighbourhood Centre would like to receive donations of furniture, carpets and household equipment.

The donations will be passed on to families who are being rehoused or cant afford to replace such items. They are made available free in return for a contribution to delivery costs.

Donations in reasonable condition can be made by calling Brian orTerry, or Pat Whitmore at the Neighbourhood Centre on 726525.

Peace missions and fears for soldier safety in Bosnia

The injury of the young 9th/12th Royal Lancer officer followed by the tragic death of a young Lance Corporal from The Royal Welch Fusiliers Regiment brings the reality of the situa tion of the conflict in Bosnia into focus, especially here in an area where a vast number of servicemen and their families live.

Following his accidentJustin Freeland made light of his injuries in the quirky way typical of cavalry officers - he'd got in the way of a bullet.

Nevertheless, the underlying message in all the interviews has been that these men are doing a job for which they have been trained and the odd accident, whilst unfortunate, is the price to be paid for getting the job done. The UN convoys are getting through. Aid is reaching the areas where it is needed most.

The death of Lance Corporal Wayne Edwards in his Warrior vehicle whilst escorting an ambulance is a stark reminder that our servicemen are often called upon by our politicians to lay down their lives in conflicts of which we have no part.

His family probably feel, asdo many, that our troops should not be in Bosnia - that the war has nothing to do with us. However it is because of our commitment to ease the suffering amongst the innocent victims of war that our servicemen have become involved. A disturbing incident occurred on 16 January, as I was going to the Link Centre. A young girl aged about ten approached meand asked for 30p. She said that she had lost 30p and needed it to telephone her mother. Feeling concerned for the child lit over 30p and continued on my way into the library whereupon I overheard a lady telling the librarian that she had been approached by a young girl asking for money.

She had subsequently seen the young girl counting money in a corner outside. The lady wanted to warn some of the older people in the library about what was happening.

It was clear that the child had approached several people and at

We can only pray that no more of our servicemen will be injured or killed and that they will all return safe in mind, body and soul.

For those that do not return it is to be hoped that their families will be well looked after, though this is often not the case. The pain and suffering of losing a loved one is often further compounded by the lack of adequate financial provision to help the family 'soldier on'. Many families discovered this to their cost following the Falkland War. War widows fromboth the World Wars have experienced this foryears. The service families of the Cheshire Regiment living in Germany are already paying the price for seeing their loved ones in Bosnia. The serviceman's allowances have been cut - a quitedeplorable,indefensibleaction.

Our servicemen and their families deserve proper, adequate financialand moralsupport to make their situation more bearable. Now that we are once again being drawn into the Iraq conflict, more families will be experiencing the anxieties and frustrations which active service brings in its wake. The long lonely hours and the fear of that 'knockon the door'. But service families are, in the main, quite resilient and resourceful and at the end of the day they will cope. The child showed no sign of embarrassment and was clearly quite unconcerned that her little 'scam' had been uncovered. The librarian seemed to think that a similar incident had happened a few weeks earlier and some of the Link staff believed that the child was trying to get money to go skating.

The worrying aspect is that this child was unashamedly approaching men and women alikeasking for money,a situation whichcould have horrendous consequences.

fpcallives First resident gives historical connection Mrs Irene Butler is one of the first residents of the 'modern' West Swindon. She arrived before the first houses were built and still lives here. Maeve Whiteheight talked to her about those early days.

Irene Butler, now 70 years old, lived in Greenwich until she moved to Swindon with her husband John in 1954. She had dreamed of living in an isolated country cottage, but it was not untilJohn was made redundant from Pressed Steel and got a job with Thamesdown Council that her dream came true.

He became a supervisor for the construction of the first roads and footpaths in Toothill when building work started in 1974. The Council had purchased Toothill Farm, on BodiamDrive,and the tenant farmer had moved out. The Butlers were asked to be caretakers and they readily moved in.

They were surrounded by fields and grazing cows. At night the wind whistling around the cranes and construction equipment a few hundred yards away, interrupted by trains on the railway line closeby, gave their isolation an eerie feel.

The overhead power lines had been taken down and power for the farmhouse came from a portable generator until mains supply was available again.

The walled garden was covered with roses, John built a crazy golf course around the farm buildings, one of which is now Toothill youth club,and in the summer they picked the apples, plums and pears from the Farm orchard.

Before the new roads came close to the Farm, the family had to make their way along a track on foot. On some occasions Irene would sit in the bucket of a JCB covered by a tarpaulin to protect her from the mud thrown up by the giant wheels, to be given a bumpy ride home by John.

When her daughter Christine got married, she rode on a tractor in her wedding dress to the nearest road.

Christine had put her name down for a council house in Toothill and John had jokingly carved her name in the wet concrete of a path leading up to one of the new houses. When the housing department informed Christine that she had been allocated a house, they were all delighted to discover that it was the house upon which her name appeared.

In 1977, with construction of roads and houses in Toothill well underway and with building in Freshbrook about the start, the Council decided to start converting the farmhouse into a community centre and the Butlers moved to one of the old cottages next to Yarmouth

Mrs Butler, keeping up her mobility

Close, on Freshbrook Way. They lived there for 10 years until John died. Irene decided that the house was too big for her needs and moved to the recently opened Salzgitter Court elderly persons group dwelling, in Toothill.

Nowadays she looks after herself in the company of the other residents of the Court, sees her children and grandchildren regularly, and attends Toothill Church.

Irene makes good use of the DialA-Ride transport service and once a month is wheeled around Swindon town centre by young offenders on Community Service. She gets on very well with them and always take them for a cup of tea to say thank you. Recently she bought herself an electric 'go-cart' to keep her mobile and independent. So if you see Irene around the community, say hello.

The primary victims are dead, but the surviving relatives and friends are victims too.

Now a branch of a national organisation RoadPeace, which aims to promote public awareness of da ngeron the roads and give support to people bereaved by fatal road accidents, has been set up in Swindon.

The town has been in the news because of several tragic accidents.

The local branch of RoadPeace called The Compass has been carrying out a survey and gathering names for a petition to be presented to the Home Secretary.
