Preparing for the centenary of the Great War

The Swindon in the Great War project will be launched at Radnor Street Cemetery Chapel, Swindon on Saturday 23 November, 11am to 3pm, with the first of a series of exhibitions over the next four years. Swindon historian Mark Sutton will display military artifacts and photographs of Swindon men who served. People who attend will receive a free copy of Mark's book Tell Them of Us, his exhaustive record of the men who died during the 1914 to 1918 conflict. There will be hot drinks, mince pies and Christmas music. Weather permitting there will be short guided walks around the chapel area, including visits to the Commonwealth War Graves situated in the cemetery. Volunteers needed to make Christmas a good one for Swindon homeless

Swindon Christmas Care opens its doors to provide a warm shelter and companionship over Christmas at Queens Drive Methodist Church Hall, Park South from 11am on Christmas Eve to 11am on 28 December. Run entirely by volunteers, tea, coffee and a friendly face will be available 24 hours a day. The project depends entirely on the generosity of the public for donations of warm clothing and footwear, bedding, towels, toiletries and food. Greig Evenett of Furze Close, whose daughter attends Peatmoor Primary School, has become increasingly concerned about the volume and speed of traffic on the road. Apart from one small island refuge and two flashing speed warning signs, the road which is nearly a mile long and sweeps round several bends has no pedestrian crossings at all. Greig said: “In the two years since I moved to Peatmoor the growth in traffic as drivers try to avoid the snarl up on Mead Way has been very noticeable. Swinley Drive has been turned from an estate road into a major through route from Purton Road to Tewkesbury Way. “People seem to be driving faster and with many side roads off Swinley Drive this has become a major hazard. The main issue is the danger to pedestrians. There is nowhere safe to cross, particularly when children are

Explaining this Peter said: “Several complex matters are being addressed in parallel and this takes time.” Meanwhile, the fund resides with Big Local and not, as other media reports claim, with Swindon Borough Council. The Partnership Committee comprises 11 individuals, nine of whom are Toothill residents. Kareen, of Old Town, is the only chairperson so far.

Identifying an early opportunity to release funding into the community the committee is making most of this additional money available via bids of less than £500. The committee is now working on the means to access the £1 million for larger bids. Kareen said: “We have initially earmarked £15,000 as an excellent opportunity for community funding prior to the £1m being released.”

The money was raised by the charity after holding a series of fundraisers throughout the summer, including a raffle and supermarket collection, as well as a trolley dash, with all proceeds match-funded by The ACT Foundation, owners of the Basepoint Business Centre network.
 
 The MS Therapy Centre provides nearly 6,000 oxygen, physio and complimentary therapies a year, with some 120 people attending each week. Most are affected by multiple sclerosis but an increasing number of adults and children with other conditions such as autism, cancer and carbon monoxide poisoning now use the facilities. Basepoint manager Lyn Chapman said: “We’re delighted to have raised

over £40,000 for the MS Therapy Centre. It marks a very special moment for us all as we start a fifth year of fundraising.” Centre manager Jackie Wray said the Basepoint support is special. “It’s very difficult to get help with core operating costs which is essential to sustain the charity. Basepoint’s help in this way keeps us moving forward.” Last year, in recognition of the continued financial help, the MS Centre named the members’ social area after Basepoint. Westlea head sails into the sunset in school’s thirtieth year

Headteacher Suzanne Seaton - only the third since Westlea Primary School opened in 1983 - is retiring at Christmas after being in post for 15 years. The continuity at Westlea is remarkable with the second and third headteachers both previously being deputies at the school. Suzanne said: “I came here as deputy to Neil Griffiths in 1993 but it only seems like two minutes ago. I will feel very sad to leave but I’ve had enough of the Government not letting teachers get on with their jobs.” Describing her legacy Suzanne said: “I’m leaving a school which has a good ethos, good results, a good reputation in the community it serves, and a very happy band of children, parents and staff. I will miss them all a lot.” Suzanne has a Caribbean cruise planned to begin her retirement. She said: “We set off on the Queen Elizabeth on 10 January. I’m looking forward to sailing into New York, along the Panama Canal and under the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. “After that I haven’t a clue what I’ll be doing. Hopefully it will be lots of reading, walking, cooking and rediscovering parts of the UK.” Suzanne’s successor is Rose Carbury, currently at the University of Worcestershire . Discovering real world writing Youngsters at Westlea Primary School have stretched their composition skills after discovering how writing takes place in settings outside the classroom. Link magazine publisher Roger Ogle gave talks to two assemblies in late September about how the publication is put together every month, with particular emphasis on making every word count. Writing coordinator Julie Field said she was delighted with the reaction from pupils. “The point that really struck them was the fact that stories in The Link are proofread several times. “Teachers are always saying to children to read through their work before they think it’s finished. They were really surprised when they saw some of the draft pages of the magazine with corrections all over them. Sam James, below, who suffers from mild cerebral palsy, is looking for people with disabilities who want to try a gym but don’t feel confident that able bodied instructors will understand their particular requirements. Sam has just started a 12 week placement at Link Centre as part of her Instructability course, a London Paralympic initiative set up to train people with disabilities to train others. Now aged 33, Sam stopped breathing at 9 weeks which starved her brain of oxygen. She now suffers from a slight speech impediment, a poor grip in her left hand and tight leg muscles. She said: “I used to swim a lot when younger but gave up on fitness when I went to uni. The school in Haydon End, which opened in 2006, expanded to a two form intake in 2010 when mobiles arrived on site. These will be removed to make way for a permanent two storey block providing 8 classrooms, a nursery and an assembly room. This means the children currently in mobiles will transfer to brand new mobiles now being erected close to the school entrance. Work can then start on the new extension ready for use in September. Commenting on the changes headteacher Debbie Kalynka, above, said: “I deliberately chose to work in a small school when I applied for the Orchid Vale position in 2005. The staff and governors have been in a

constant state of flux for the last four years as the population grew around the school. But it’s important that we contributed to the rising demand for school places across North Swindon. “The important thing is to continue organising a lot of activity across the school to retain the special atmosphere we have at Orchid Vale.” The cost of the current building work is £3.2 million. The school will have space for 420 children plus a 52 place nursery.

Art for all at Abbey Meads There was a huge turnout of nearly 150 parents and grandparents to end Abbey Meads Primary School art week in early November. From 4 to 8 November Gordon and Toni Dickinson worked with children to produce 14 large artworks in the style of famous artists to be hung around the school hall. To end the week adults and siblings were invited to produce their own mini-artworks with pupils. Headteacher Bob Buckley said: “There was a great response to our first art participation session. It was wonderful to see so many people being creative together at the same time.” Toni added: “It’s been a super week with everybody involved. The teachers chose the themes to be worked on and the children listened closely to what we asked them to do and really had an enjoyable experience.”

The Brownies reached the final after completing a range of activities and enjoyed a day out in London before meeting the sporting superstars at an event for finalists at Lee Valley Athletics Centre on 4 October. David and Ellie ran a training session for over 170 young people from 34 groups and schools which included lots of physical exercise and tips on creating a healthy lunchbox. The judges selected Freshbrook Brownies after Kerry Rutherford wrote a slogan: 'We enjoy taking part in the Sainsbury's Active Kids Challenge because I like keeping fit with my friends.' She said: "It was a brilliant day with hundreds of others there. David Beckham was really nice and played games with us and gave high-5s all round.

Painting by Swindon artist unveiled at Steam Museum An evocative work by Swindon's internationally acclaimed artist and muralist Ken White has been unveiled at Steam Museum of the Great Western Railway.

The oil on canvas painting entitled The Rivet Hotters, has been purchased by The Friends of Swindon Railway Museum. It depicts a group of men in Swindon’s GWR works gathered round a brazier used for heating up rivets for building steam engines, making their toast at lunchtime. It is one of many paintings in Ken’s collection that reflects the four years from 1958 to 1962 that he spent as an apprentice rivet hotter in the town’s famous railway works and later as a signwriter.

At the unveiling on 30 October Ken admitted that the boy at the centre of the piece is in fact a self-portrait. Describing his collection of over thirty large paintings, he said: “I wanted to document my working in the GWR at Swindon Works; the atmosphere, noise, smells and the larger-than-life characters that I remember.” Alan Wild, chairman of the Friends of Swindon Railway Museum, said: “We are very pleased to have been able to secure the painting for the enjoyment of future visitors to the museum.”

For the last 40 years the cultural life of Swindon has been documented and archived by volunteers committed to capturing the life of the town on video. Swindon Viewpoint was one of Britain’s first community TV stations, broadcasting on cable - the only one still in existence, now on the internet. The town’s music scene benefited from their work with gigs, festivals and events all captured for posterity. To celebrate and to raise funds to continue into the future Swindon Viewpoint has organised a major event at MECA, Regent Circus on Friday 20 December, headlined by Tin Spirits (featuring former XTC legend Dave Gregory), The Erin Bardwell Collective, Colour the Atlas, Nudybronque and the Teddy White Band. I’d love to play Swindon Arts Centre again. “I’m currently recording a solo album, working in a Bristol studio with the bass player of Portishead. The first half is done and we’ll be working on

the second half in January. I think one track from the album is going to be used by the BBC for their Timeshift documentary series. “Ever since I was young, I wanted to do either sports or music, but when I was a teenager the music just took hold. Dorothy Clarke smiled and laughed as her long black hair was cut and her head shaved to raise awareness and money for a charity in India. The event took place at Kateson Body Care in the Brunel Centre Arcade on Friday 25 October. She has been diagnosed with a rare and dangerous auto-immune disease, called antisynthetase syndrome, which affects the lungs, joints and muscles, as well as the hands. The treatment involves regular doses of steroids and chemotherapy, but in Dorothy’s case the disease has been caught early. It should have been rebuilt in 2010 under the national play builder programme but the budget was slashed by the coalition government. However the councillors secured £60,000 in May 2012 which funded installation of a range of adventurous equipment during the summer holidays. Nutmeg provides new eyes for Alan Fletcher The chairman of Swindon Guide Dogs for the Blind Alan Fletcher has got his left arm back thanks to his new guide dog Nutmeg who arrived at the end of October. His much loved guide dog Joy died very suddenly in May. Alan said:“It was devasting. I lost a good friend who provided me with mobility, freedom, independence and confidence. “It’s all come back with Nutmeg, it’s been like getting my life back. I would like to thank everyone who sent messages after Joy was put to sleep. It was a great boost knowing that she was

Sewage concerns back up in Taw Hill Residents of Taw Hill believe that Thames Water’s sub-contractors Optimise are overstepping the mark when it comes to plans for two new sewage storage tanks costing £5 million, that are proposed for the area.

The two underground tanks at either end of Queen Elizabeth Drive are intended to provide overflow capacity and protect homes from sewage backing up during times of heavy rainfall. However, Taw Hill residents David Parkinson and Brian McClean believe that not enough has been done to identify alternative sites for the tanks, and are dissatisfied with the ‘fait accompli’ attitude that is apparent in the later proposals from Optimise. Brian said: “It looks like Thames Water’s sub-contractors Optimise are trying to avoid planning permission requirements by removing all above ground infrastructure from their plan. It means the originally proposed lay-by and lighting tower have been eliminated, while the vent pipe is now planned to be at ground level instead.” The residents are concerned that the siting of the tanks within a few yards of homes is totally unsuitable, and advocate that Mouldon Hill Country Park, on the west side of

Thamesdown Down, would be a better place to put them. Refuting Optimise’s claims that the power lines at Mouldon Hill prevent construction Brian said: “The power lines are the standard legal height for construction, and the industrial nature of the tanks and peripheral installations would not look strange next to the new heritage railway line.” Unfortunately Brian and David also perceive that there is a breakdown in communication regarding the fate of the power lines crossing Mouldon Hill park. Explaining their position David said: “We are under the impression that Justin Tomlinson MP expects the power lines to be buried to make the open space usable as a sport field. Scottish and Southern Energy deny all knowledge of this. “It all feels like a lot of smoke and mirrors. There is a perfectly adequate alternative, but the residents of Taw Hill could be the victims because Thames Water don’t require permission.”

Executive headteacher Jackie Smith said the project had achieved on more than one level: “Uplands Shop has been an invaluable learning tool for the students who have been able to gain retail and catering experience in a safe but real life environment. “The shop has been embraced by the community and Zurich, Open Work and other organisations have continued to support the enterprise with donations of previously enjoyed clothing, accessories and books. “Volunteers from the Co-Op have also worked with students and provided Fairtrade products to be served in the coffee shop.” With Christmas upon us Uplands Shop is hoping for donations of items being cleared out in December, and

will welcome unwanted gifts. Lorna Braid said: “We always need excellent quality stock for the charity shop and would really like donations of ornaments, pictures, kitchenware and crockery.” To donate items call into the shop on Isambard Way, opposite the front entrance of Isambard Community School.

Members of the scout group joined the event which took place thanks to farmer Francis Rummings who allowed 25 diggers to search for items of historical interest. “We give anything of interest to museums to expand their exhibits,” said organiser Ian Larby. “It’s a great opportunity to spend the day with fellow detectorists from the forum and see what we can find, and also to donate to a local charity. “The scouting movement is all about adventure, and it seemed fitting to raise money doing something we see as adventurous.” Finds included a 900 year old hammered penny from the reign of Henry

II, and another from the17th Century at the time of King James I, as well as a silver thimble, also believed to be from the 1600s. The event raised over £500 for the Beaver colony. “We are delighted by the generosity of the forum group as we are a self-funding charity,” said Chris Rawlings, group Scout leader. Beware of loan sharks on the doorstep While much publicity is being given to the impact pay day lenders are having on society, the pernicious activities of loan sharks are in the sights of Swindon Council’s trading standards officers. The department works closely with the England Illegal Money Lending Team which consists of specialist officers who investigate illegal lending, and liaison officers who support victims and raise awareness of the dangers of borrowing from illegal lenders. The team investigates and prosecutes both illegal lending, and also any offences that are linked to it such as violence, threatening behaviour, counterfeit goods, drug offences, kidnap and even rape. Move to a ‘no-car diet’ An office move to Lydiard Fields in December has prompted a Swindon resident Tony Pound to take up a challenge of living for a year without a car Tony, who works for Openwork, will sell his car and use the 4 mile commute as an opportunity to cycle, run or walk to work each day as training towards an Ironman challenge next year. “I know it’s not going to be easy to live without a car,” he admits, “as it will mean longer journey times, being more organised, and having to think about changes of clothes, but there’s nothing that can’t be overcome by appropriate planning.” Tony will use taxis, public transport and the Swindon Car Club when he needs motorised transport, but is looking forward to the benefits of not owning a car. “I’m going to save a huge amount of money not having to pay for insurance, running costs, parking, tax, MOT and servicing, but above all I’m hoping that my experience can inspire others to get more active and reduce their car use.” Tony will be keeping a blog about his car free challenge, which will be linked from www.swindontravelchoices.org.uk
