A high level meeting involving councillors and Thamesdown road engineers, and attended by The Link magazine, has given encouragement to Diane Johnson.

The Toothill mother, whose son Ashley died after being knocked on Whitehill Way between the Link Centre and Shaw Ridge Leisure Park in late September, has been campaigning for a safe crossing.

Over 3,000 people have signed her petition. Help her double this number by Ashley's 13th birthday on 19 December when she will hand it to the Mayor at the next full Thamesdown council meeting.

Last month graphic designer and brand identity expert Martin Warne explained the background to Swindon's new logo. The borough council may be changing its name, but the town's bus company will be keeping a link to the town's history by retaining the name Thamesdown Transport.

Operations Director David Birch gave several reasons for not changing. "The cost of repainting buses and signage would be a very expensive exercise. And perhaps more important, we've achieved a brand image and strong reputa-

tion as Thamesdown Transport which we want to build on. Although we have been a private limited company for ten years, people still think we are a council department. It's a good time to reinforce the distinction."

Youthquake is here as a centre page pull out. Researched and written by and for young people, and put together by art college students, Youthquake is an independent initiative which is using The Link as a way of giving young people a voice.

It's very difficult for young people to communicate their ideas, interests and concerns on a wide scale and The Link is pleased to provide the means of doing this.

The space we can give to youth interests is often limited, so we welcome the efforts of Kern Porter and Teresa Barclay who have been pictured in the last two editions of the magazine looking for other like minded young people to go into print.

The Mayor's Christmas Appeal The Mayor of Thamesdown Maureen Caton writes It has become traditional for the Mayor of Thamesdown to make a Christmas Appeal for his or her chosen charity.

I have made it known that I feel very strongly about oppression, cruelty and neglect in our world, both in respect of humans and animals. My Christmas Appeal will therefore benefit three charities covering these fields.

My chosen charities are as follows: Amnesty International Charitable Trust (Reg No 105181) This is the non-political arm of Amnesty International, an organisation well known for its work in alleviating cruelty and oppression all over the world. The Charitable Trust pours considerable resources into research programmes.

NSPCC (Swindon Branch) (Reg. No 216401) The Swindon Branch is carrying out wonderful work in the local area for children with problems.

Thamesdown Animal Sanctuary (Reg. No 297815) T.A.S. has been going for several years and is striving to set up its own building to carry out a rescue service for local animals.

These are all very worthy causes and I would welcome a donation from you in true Christmas spirit.

At the launch of the Safe Swindon project aimed at West Swindon under the umbrella of Crime Concern, the Princess Royal spoke of the high number of young people living in the area and the need for a peer led drugs education programme, a youth festival and a youth advice, information and resource centre at the Link Centre.

The project was based on research in Toothill and Freshbrook during the summer of 1995 sponsored by BT and the Halifax.

A Crime Concern spokesperson said staff changes had caused delays. She said a first group of young volunteers to run a peer led drugs education programme funded by BT were trained in November by Swindon Druglink. The first support sessions should start soon.

The information and advice centre will now be based in the town centre with backing from Lloyds Bank.

Vandals attack open access community school Graffiti vandals have damaged a mobile classroom at Westlea School to the dismay of pupils and staff.

Headteacher Neil Griffiths said he was very angry with the crude scribbling. 'The school is an open site which allows use by children and parents out of school hours.

It's sad that some people are intent on defacing the school and destroying the hard work put in by so many people."

All efforts to remove the graffiti have been defeated and the mobile will have to be repainted.

Mr Griffiths said he wanted the

culprits caught. "The police have taken photographs and are comparing the style of graffiti with examples elsewhere.

"I would ask local people to be vigilant and keep a watch out on our behalf.

• Graffiti vandals also attacked Greendown School at the beginning of November, spraying walls and two mini-buses. Quick work by staff removed the effect from the public eye.

Playgroup kids try a squirt Youngsters at Westlea Playgroup took part in a sponsored water squirt for Children in Need, with the help of firefighters from Westlea fire station.

Group 2 watch turned out on 19 November to give each child a turn with a high pressure hose.

The children and staff hope to have raised over £200, with assistant supervisor Rosie Jones sponsored to the tune of £30.

The fire fighters voluntarily went to work on Saturday 23 November to open Westlea station to the public in aid of Children in Need. BBC Wiltshire Sound broadcast live and total of £280 was raised.

I wonder if I am the only resident in West Swindon who can hear a low and rather loud noise on some mornings. Usually on a Friday between 7am and 8am, but this can vary.

It seems to come from the direction of Barnfield and when you first hear it you think it is an aircraft. Suddenly it can stop like a siren winding down but it soon

The Link has regularly reported, since the first public exhibition of village centre plans in 1990, on the slow movement on getting commercial facilities to the area.

Thamesdown Council has been trying to get a developer to take on the site next to Peatmoor Lagoon for years, but negotiations just drag on without getting any closer to a commitment to build.

Wiltshire County Council education committee have by-passed Roughmoor and is putting money into a primary school at Abbey Meads in North Swindon. Shaw's Brook Field School is expanding well beyond its planned capacity to cater for Roughmoor children.

Swindon, which takes over education in April, has made a bid to a government capital challenge fund to build the school. The decision is to be made before Christmas, but

"It is a very poor situation," said Ms Drown. 'The area needs local facilities. It's eight years since the first people moved into Sparcells.

Attempts by Thamesdown Council to get developers to build have foundered because they did not find enough people living in the area. Roughmoor is nearly complete now and I have been urging Thamesdown to increase its efforts to get developers to sign up."

She said she was very disappointed that Wiltshire had failed to build a primary school. "A local school is essential to give a focus to families in Roughmoor. I have written to the Secretary of State for the Environment Sir Paul Beresford stressing the need to support Swindon's bid for challenge fund cash."

Mayor to receive road crossing petition on Ashley's birthday Ashley Johnson from Longthorpe Close, Toothill would have turned thirteen on 19 December. Tragically he was knocked down on Whitehill Way on 28 September and died later in the intensive care unit at Oxford's John Radcliffe Hospital.

Instead of celebrating Ashley's birthday, his mother Diane will be presenting a petition to Thamesdown Council calling for the road to be made safe for pedestrians.

Over 3,000 people have signed it and Diane is hoping to double this number by the time she hands in the petition.

Last month's Link magazine described the disatisfacfion with the design of the Shaw Ridge Leisure Park even before it was built because of the poor pedestrian access.

Diane Johnson met Toothill councillors Terry Winter and Maurice Fanning and Julia Drown, Labour's prospective parliamentary candidate on 18 November to express her concern for others crossing Whitehill Way on foot.

A Thamesdown engineer explained that traffic access to Shaw Ridge was being closely considered, particularly the problem of drivers turning right at the park exit, rather than driving straight on and using the roundabout.

A traffic study has shown that Whitehill Way is the second most dangerous pedestrian crossing in Swindon after the Great Western

Way dual carriageway atBarnfield Road. However, all four of the accidents on Whitehill Way in the last six years have involved children. Ashley Johnson has been the only fatality.

Conn Fanning explained that the petition will be passed from the full council meeting to the Public Works and Services Committee towards the end of January. He

hopes that the committee will agree to to make Whitehill Way safe for pedestrians. If it does, the earliest work could start would be in April or May. In the short term a 40mph speed limit is being imposed on major roads in West Swindon.

Diane Johnson said she was pleased that the problem was being considered seriously. "Shaw Ridge draws so many young peo-

ple and we must make it safer for them.

"I was prepared to sit down in the road to protest, but the councillors are open minded and supportive. I am glad we're working together."

She is writing to Virgin Cinemas boss Richard Branson calling for a financial contribution to the cost of building a pelican crossing.

Cash for intensive care unit Ashley Johnson's friends from Ridgeway School held a sponsored trampoline bounce at the Link Centre on 16 November in aid of the John Radcliffe Hospital intensive care unit where he was treated after the accident. French teacher Kirstie Irving has the right look and her street cred with her students is sky high.

All the students in her tutor group at Hreod Parkway School reckon the blonde haired 23 year old looks just like Emma in all girl group Spice Girls. Now Kirstie, pictured right, is going to be madeover to look like the pop star in a Children's BBC special called 'The Christmas Zone.'

Kirstie agreed that her photo' could be sent in after an appeal for look-a-like teachers. Her similarity to Spice Girl Emma and a cheeky letter from year 8 student Hayley Embling convinced beeb researchers to call her up for a recording on 12 December.

Kirstie, who only joined the school in September, after taking her teacher's certificate at Cambridge and an M.A. in France, said she had agreed after much pestering from her tutor group.

The annual general meeting of the Seven Fields Conservation Group at the Haydon Centre on 19 November heard of a campaigning year to prevent Thamesdown Council destroying the open space wildlife habitat they have fought so hard over many years to preserve.

"Not only was the scheme inappropriate to the environment, the damage to the surrounding area was totally destructive. They ripped through hedgerows and scarred three fields before we could stop them for a rethink. The insensitivity and devastation was shocking."

The group continues to lobby for more sensitive treatment of the Seven Fields area.

During the year, volunteers rebuilt a bridge destroyed by vandals, have given talks to other groups, taken guided walks around Seven Fields and studied the ecology of the area.

Despite achieving Statutory Local Nature Reserve status for the area between Haydon Wick, Abbey Meads and Penhill, the group of volunteers were forced into battling against council engineers and the Haydon Development Company determined to build urban standard tarmac cycle routes.

"The contractors moved in to build the cycleway very quickly," said group chair Adrienne Smith.

We asked four people, 14-18 years old, about animal testing, what they thought about it and whether they check products (cosmetics) before they buy them. A young woman totally disagreed with the whole issue of animal testing, whenasked why animals should suffer when experiments went wrong, she said that she checked every product before buying. Another young person said that they thought it was a cruel thing to do, not fair, and that animals don't do it to humans do they? but he didn't always check products he bought.

Most of the young people we spoke to said similar things.

We attended a meeting at the Link Youth Unit where a large group of young people are about to start a campaign to open a 'Drop in' facility at the Link Centre Youth Unit. about the launch of the Crown Court Witness Service scheme at Swindon Crown Court, run by the charity Victim Support.

This is an independent service to give practical and emotional help to witnesses attending court to give evidence. This need has, of course been highlighted recently with national press coverage of the severe trauma experienced by victims and witnesses having to 'relive the ordeal' during rape and indecency trials.

The service is cheerfully and efficiently manned by a team of volunteers, all of whom live in the Swindon area and excepting two,

over 700 witnesses have been supported at Swindon in a variety of trials, including burglaries, assaults, drugs, causing death by dangerous driving and rape.

We are now in the process of recruiting additional volunteers to work alongside the more experienced members of the team. A training course is planned for February 1997.

Nursery education vouchers. What's it all about?

Nursery vouchers have been receiving lots of attention recently. Steve Menham, headteacher of Tregoze School, on behalf of West Swindon primary schools, explains their approach.

What are vouchers?

The government is giving vouchers to parents of 4 year olds so they can get up to 3 terms of pre-school education, where available.

The vouchers can be used in state and private schools as well as preschool playgroups and will be available in Swindon from April 1997.

What is Swindon Borough Council doing about vouchers?

The Borough Council is arranging for all children to receive three years of infant school education from September 1997, if their parents want it for them.

Who can advise or help me?

If you do not receive an application form, ring the national helpline on 0345 543345 and ask for one.

The headteacher of your child's school will answer any questions.

Information leaflets will be available at schools next term.

Does my child need a voucher?

The chart below shows when Yes. All children starting school nursery voucher may be used in after April 1997 will need vouchers until the term after their fifth school.

What does it mean for my child?

You still do not have to send your child to school until the term after his/her fifth birthday, BUT..

You can now send him/her to school to receive three years of infant education after September 1997, if you wish.

If you do not give the vouchers to the school your child will not be admitted until he/she is five.

What do I do with the vouchers?

If your child is already at school take the vouchers to the school.

You will be asked to sign the vouchers which the school will keep and the headteacher will sign the counterfoil which you will keep. There is nothing else for you to do.

If your child is not yet at school, take the vouchers to the school on your child's first day and give them to your child's class teacher. You will be asked to sign the vouchers the school has to keep. The class teacher will give you back the counterfoils, signed by the headteacher, when you return to collect your child at the end of the day.

Why does the school need my child's voucher?

Each school has its own budget based on the number of children who attend it. Most of the money for children aged between four and five has been taken by the Government to pay for the vouchers. Your school's budget for these children will be based on the number of vouchers it collects.

If you do not apply for the vouchers and you do not give them to the headteacher, your school will lose money. It is therefore very important that all parents claim vouchers and give them to the school.

A year at Westlea fire station

Could you promote educational books, CD Roms, videos and games?

It hardly seems possible that another 12 months have gone by and I'm again writing a Christmas message on behalf of your local fire station, writes Sub officer Perry Payne.

It seems appropriate to recap on some of the things we've been involved with over the last year.

Operationally, we have responded to over a one thousand incidents this year including: house fires, road traffic accidents, lift rescues, animal rescues, thatch fires, factory fires, skip fires, barn fires, explosions involving high voltage electrical apparatus and we've even rescued a child from between two buildings.

Some have been amusing, some demanding, some perhaps dangerous and others nothing short of tragic, but at least they are all different.

I remember we attended the first incident for the Wiltshire Fire Brigade in 1996 in the early hours of New Years day to free a man and woman at a party who had contrived to become handcuffed together, without the aid of the Constabulary. We helped Helene Woodham from Westlea to achieve her Duke of Edinburgh's gold award, saw fire fighter Paul Brew break a world master's swimming record, hosted an open day, and
