Young TV stars Carrie-Anne Chipperfield and Kelly Rayment

Christmas is going to be special for two local youngsters when they see themselves on the Russ Abbott Christmas Day Special tv show. Carrie-Anne Chipperfield, 6, from Shaw, and Kelly Rayrnent, 9, from Sparcells spent four days in September rehearsing and filming at the BBC Television Centre with six other children from Swindon's Mollie Tanner Dance School. Carrie-Anne, who attends Brookfield School, and Kelly, from Shaw Ridge School, travelled to the studios every day, with different mums acting as chaperones. "It wasn't hard work," said Carrie-Anne, "but we didn't have much time to learn the part. You had to pick it up quickly and do things at the right time."

Kelly was impressed by Russ Abbott. "He was very kind and made lots of jokes all the time. He's a very funny man. He's just like he is on television." TheChristmas Day show, which will be shown at 515p.m., features the Hans Christian Anderson fairy tales with the children wearing beautifully made costumes. Both girls have been dancing at the Tanwood School since they were two and have performed in a rangeof stage, filmand pantomime work. Kelly is a junior associate at the Royal Ballet School and hopes to be a dancer or actress one day. Unfortunately Carrie-Anne sustained a knee injury in November which means she's has to take things slowly.

The many and varied problems and challenges presented by the rapid growth of a new community were revealed at the two day conference held at the Link Centre at the beginning of November.
