Campaign to get North school delivered on time Swindon Council's cabinet on 19 July launched a consultation process on school provision in North Swindon, which includes a new seconda ry school in the Haydon 3 development, five more prima ry schools, rebuilding Hreod Parkway seconda ry on one site, possibly a new Moredon prima ry school and relocation of two special schools. Over the next fifteen years the cost will be around £60 million.

Decisions on the way forward will be taken next May after an extensive round of meetings.

Hreod Parkway, the current feeder school for the northern development will have a roll of 1,350 in September. In 2004 the number of 11 to 16 year olds in its catchment of Moredon, Haydon Wick, Woodhall Park and the new housing areas is expected to be 1,620.

As a stop-gap to accommodate the rapid rise in numbers, six new mobile classrooms were installed at Hreod in early July, below.

The report on secondary provision across North Swindon to the cabinet meeting highlighted the deteriorating condition of Hreod Parkway and the need to replace or rebuild ` it on a single site.

There will be seven primary schools in North Swindon when house building is completed sometime between 2010 and 2015, two have already been built. n.

Speaking before the cabinet meeting, Swindon Director of Education Mike Lusty, stressed he was keen to see the new northern secondary school completed at the earliest possible opportunity and insisted that the nine month delay in starting Haydon 3 would make no difference.

Helpers needed to keep junior club going The newly established Toothill community centre junior club for 7 to 13 year olds closes on 16 August after a ten week pilot project. It will only reopen if volunteers come forward to run it.

Set up by the West area team playworkers to assess the need for a club, the response has been overwhelming with thirty children a week enjoying supervised activities. Maxine Orchard, 11, said "I used to stay at home on Wednesday evenings, but the club is really good; it's a safe place to go and have fun."

Play development worker Jean Goncalves said an organising group is needed to manage the club, run activities and apply for grants for equipment. Support and guidance from play workers is available, and

New coordinator for project West Swindon Family & Community Project said farewell to its coordinator Mark Thomas at the end of June and welcomed project worker Allyson Cardis into the position.

Allyson, right, has been with the project for five years and has lived in West Swindon for 18. With a background in childcare, she is currently taking an Open University degree in social policy. She said her aim is to build on the foundations created by Mark and the management committee so that the project at the house in Gainsborough Way, Freshbrook continues to thrive.

Joseph's story told

Creative activities topped the curriculum at Greenmeadow School for a week at the end of term.

Year 1 children visited the Sealife Centre at Weston Super Mare and created pictures, collages and salt dough models while junior children made observational drawings, created 3D treasure maps and pneumatic monster mini-beasts.

Youngsters at Moredon Junior School chose Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat for the annual year 6 leavers musical production for parents on 19 July.

All 85 children had a part and all staff were involved in making costumes and scenery.

I shall enjoy recording the winning three entries as much as the other judges and I enjoyed reading them. You can hear them broadcast on BBC Wiltshire Sound on Saturday 5 August, between 1pm and 2pm.

It has been a pleasure working in association with The Link and also

linking the competition to Swindon's Festival of Literature through its coordinator Matt Holland who was one of the judges.

Well done to all contributors - keep writing! And for those readers who thought about it but didn't get round to entering.., watch this space!

A moment, then they float over to the peak at the other end of the market and slide down to land, laughing, on Commercial Road. They then run, and jump, cheering, cartwheeling down Curtis Street. Almost in a blur, they find themselves in West Swindon, gambolling over the roof of the Link Centre and finally approaching the MGM Cinema. There before them stands `Diana Dors - Film Star', the bronze statue erected to the memory of one of Swindon's most famous, best loved and much missed daughters.

They settle themselves, appearing to sit, on the low brick wall surrounding the statue: "Diana Dors. Film Star 1931 to 1984," she says out loud, echoing the words etched into the

plaque beneath the statue's right arm.

morning sunlight streamed in.

"Enough lying in bed moping, lad," he said. "Isn't going to solve any-

thing. I've got work you can help me with."

The space beside me in the bed was deserted and cold. I tried to remember the reasons, but all I could remember now were harsh words. I felt tears coming again. Grandpa snorted.

"What? You think you're the only one to have lost someone you loved?"

I stayed silent. Grandpa had loved one woman for the best part of forty years, then lived another fifteen without her. But I doubted that he had my feelings of angry betrayal.

"I'll wait in the car," he said, unsympathetically.

Grandpa drove in silent disapproval. I had no idea where we were going until he turned into the yard at Blunsdon and I saw the rusting hulks that used to be steam engines.

I groaned. "I don't want to do this."

"Got something more important to do have we?," he inquired sarcastically. I had no answer.

We set to work on part of a tank engine's boiler, decayed to a delicate lacework of rusted metal. Grandpa

cut and welded, handling the heavy gas tanks as though he was eighteen rather than eighty. I scraped and

sanded and prodded ineptly, always under supervision, always getting it wrong. Time and again the fragile metal crumbled beneath my clumsiness. In the end I threw my sander down.

"Oh for God's sake! What the hell is the point of all this?"

"You give up too easily," retorted Grandpa. "On everything."

He kept me at it every day for four months. Grandpa with fifty years' experience at Churchward, showed me how to cut away the old metal and weld in new.

Slowly, we gained a rhythm, he and I. I sanded, and Grandpa filled.

I primed, and Grandpa painted. Then suddenly the day came when it was

He asks the question he has asked countless times before, `why do we spend what little freedom we have sitting here?'

She replies as she always has, 'because we have to.' She smiles at him, `and because we want to.'

He accepts her answer yet again.

Too soon the blanket of darkness begins to lift and both feel the inevitable tug on their souls.

The journey back is no less swift, but much less fun.

He steps up onto the ball, sullen, As she floats past him, she gives him one last kiss. Then she settles once more atop his shoulders.

Morning comes and their prison's grasps holds them firm. With an inward sigh she remembers their lot.

The long fall had killed them both.

The light had beckoned but they had refused to walk into it. Why should they! They had been having so much fun in life.

Now, they were forever fated to spend the daylight hours trapped within the monstrosity of a statue erected in their honour, with only the night to ease their burden. `Oh ... please ... Come Back The Light!'

By Melanie Hussey from St Andrew's Ridge It had been the new homes advertisement popping up from behind the hedgerow that ruined it. I had been walking through the long meadow grass, the sun warm on my arms, a cool breeze in my hair. Skylarks

soared into the sky warbling up as far as the eye could see, and it had brought back so many memories.

Swindon had been a village then in the 70s compared to what it was now. As children we had walked for miles besides shallow brooks and traced the paths of old railway lines.

There were hours of fascination in the metamorphosis of spawn to baby frog, caterpillar to butterfly. We would watch baby starlings squabbling over the last scraps of pork

crackling on the bird table and run up the lane for black jacks and fruit

finished. They pressure tested the

salads. No ceaseless cravings for the

boiler, and she didn't blow. Our job was done.

"I'm amazed," I said, and I was. "I wouldn't have believed it possible to patch that wreck up."

Grandpa handed me a mobile phone with a determined look in his eye. It was already ringing Jane's number.

"Trim out the bad stuff and patch the holes," he said, "And you'll be surprised what you can achieve."

And we would run across Mannington Rec when it was windy flying giant kites, or looking for my uncle's remote controlled model plane that invariably crashed. With Classical But award winner teenage soprano sensation Charlotte Church performing one of only three British concerts this year at the Classical Extravaganza, and Brit Award winners STEPS at the Party in the Park, crowds at the Wiltshire Festival on 25 and 27 August will be huge.

The stars may be big, and the headaches equally so; the event is now recognised as a major festival by the Home Office says organiser Andy Cotton from Shaw. " We expect 20,000 people to be at the Party, and around 10,000 at the Classical Extravaganza, the most we've ever had. It means we have to comply with about 900 pages of Health and Safety documentation to make sure the event goes smoothly and everybody has a safe and enjoyable time. " We're being seen as a festival test bed. We had to move the festival back a week because STEPS were only available on Sunday 27 August, which means we have an empty arena on the Saturday. Brave Belorussian visits fire station Firefighters at Westlea station played host to fireman Fiodor Kounits from the Chernobyl in Belorussia in late June.

As one of the last firefighters to survive the disasterous fire at the nuclear power plant over ten years ago, he suffers the effects of radiation and was on a recuperation visit in Westbury where there is a long coonection with Chernobyl.

The Westlea firefighters were pleased to show off their equipment and to hear from Fiodor about his experiences.

New lifespan for canal landmark Work on rebuilding Beavans Bridge over the Wilts and Berks canal south of Swindon will be completed by mid-August, two hundred years after its was first built, bringing the dream of linking the town into a restored canal network a step closer.

Thanks to a £360,000 National Heritage Lottery Fund grant to the Wilts and Berks Canal Amenity Group, a mile long stretch of canal has been dredged and towpath made from Kingshill to the bridge, and a further stretch will be dug out following the original route of the canal to the M4.

Originally built around 1800 as a farm accommodation bridge, using Bath stone quarried in Old Town, the new Beavens bridge is largely the work of semi-retired bricklayer Ron Robertson, his son Bill, and Derek Stewart from Grange Park, who have used old photographs and existing footings to recreate an exact copy from as much original stone available plus Portland limestone brought in from Swanage.

Since work on the overall project started in June 1999 the Amenity Group project team have had to overcome a number of problems, including negotiations with Thames Water to move a water main and a delay caused by a landslide into the canal which required piling.

Henry Smith, chair of the Swindon branch of the Wilts & Berks Canal Amenity Group said, "completion of this project is a major step forward towards connecting Swindon into a much larger network of canals. It shows what can be done, but there is so much more to do."

An official opening of the bridge will take place at an event planned for the autumn.

rebuild a second bridge close to the M4, but funding has to be obtained. This may come about if proposals to develop the Front Garden proceed, or the new Swindon Town stadium is built nearby.

The group has received major support from Link advertisers, waste merchants Crapper and Son for its work on the Moredon section of the canal, where a section has been dug out and a lock restored. The Northern Development Company is committed to creating a channel for the canal under Moredon Road when work starts on the Northern Orbital Road between October and July next year.

The Wootton Bassett branch of the Amenity Group has restored a section of canal.

The very long term plan is to link the Kennett and Avon canal at Melksham to the Thames north of Cricklade via the Wilts and Berks canal, past Wootton Bassett and Swindon.

Home support for Swindon bra walkers Stories in The Link earlier in the year about the women making plans to walk an overnight marathon on London streets wearing Wonderbras in aid of Breakthrough Cancer so inspired Linda Farrell from Haydon Wick that she organised her own mini-marathon on the Ridgeway for friends and colleagues.

Unbeknown to 'Swindon Twin Peaks' organiser Eunice Salmon, who described in the July Link the amazing response from one hundred women and five men who did the walk, Linda galvanised her friends and colleagues at Threadneedle Investments to join her on a 12 mile ramble on the Ridgeway which raised £2,575.

She and friend Michelle Madison, from Stratton, were really keen to do the full marathon but decided that they were not ready.

Linda said, "I first saw The Link story in March, but with only six weeks to go we thought it would be too tough. We mentioned the idea of doing our own walk for Breakthrough in the office and 25 women joined us. It was great, and some of us are planning to do the London walk next year."

Eunice was delighted that Linda and Michelle had taken in the initiative. "I was so surprised when Linda called me to say they had read about us and had organised themselves. It's fantastic that they did it off their own back."

She said that half the £30,000

promised to the marathon walkers had been collected.
