Link makes it to the top of the world Thanks to Greenmeadow businessman Richard Bull, The Link has now reached the parts that few othe As last month's magazine was being completed, Richard was bringing home photographs's of our June edition taken at the magnetic North Pole.

He was a member of the support team alongside explorer David Hempleman-Adams which helped Geoffrey McGonigle from Gorse Hill to become the first person with a disability to achieve such a goal.

Richard had been on an expedition to the bleak mountains of Baffin Island in the Arctic Circle in May and was invited to take part in the Magnetic North Pole trip shortly before departure.

Organised by Swindon Town chairman Rikki Hunt, the twelve day trip has inspired Richard to take on more extreme challenges.

"We flew to Resolute Bay in Northern Canada and then were taken in a smaller aircraft to our start point out on the ice," said Richard. "The arctic summer had started earlier than usual, so the top surface was very wet to ski across and was pretty thin in

places. We were pulling all our gear on sledges. At times it was tough crossing ice rubble and getting across fifteen foot high ice pressure ridges."

Richard's fitness was tested when he broke a ski and had to walk for a day through deep slush.

However the experience has left him with a taste for more adventure.

"It was really great to see what Geoffrey was able to achieve with the help of able bodied people," said Richard.

He has been nominated by RADAR as 'Disabled Person of the Year' and will feature in an ITV documentary in August.

Richard was sponsored by Wiltshire Valeting Supplies and would welcome support for further trips.

Town expansion in the public eye in August Central Government planners have decided that Swindon should expand by another 7,000 to 9,000 homes by 2011- on top of the 8,000 still to be built in North Swindon. In the longterm, the total 'new build' figure could be as many as 15,000 houses.

During August, townspeople are being asked to choose, not whether expansion should take place, but where the new houses are built. Council Leader coun.

Maurice Fanning describes the public meetings as 'a watershed moment in the development of Swindon.'

"We are giving people the opportunity to shape the way our town is going to develop," he said.

Wiltshire County Council and Swindon Borough Council have come up with two options - build on two or three smaller sites around the town over the next 12 years, or create a new town over the next twenty.

The councils have identified three sites that expand the existing urban area: 1. The Front Garden area (4,000 - 7,000 houses) 2. The area around Kingsdown crematorium (4,000 - 8,000) 3. Between Lydiard and West Swindon (3,000 - 4,000) The locations for the longer term strategy to develop a new town of up to 15,000 homes are: A Between South Marston and Wanborough, east of the A419 B. South of Wootton Bassett These large settlements would need their own railway stations, shops and schools and would mean the development of major commercial centres.

Council officials accept that there will be objections to any kind of further town development. They say that no site is being favoured, but whichever is chosen, it will have to meet four sustainable development principles identified by

Public consultation must be completed by 28 August. The options will then be considered in November. The decision will be registered as a formal modification to the structure plan.

The Mechanics Institute, the establishment of one of the first librariesin the country and the medical fund - a model for Bevan to follow - were groundbreaking.

Personally, I hope the Mechanics Institute, where it all started, will also soon regain the support it requires from those who have the power to revitalise the building.

In my mind, Swindon has always had the strength and conviction of a city. You find more civic enterprise here than in towns twice the size. Swindon achieves everything it sets out to. Without a doubt, it will one day become the City of Swindon.

Northern plans to be on display

New plans for the North Swindon development known as Haydon 3 are to be put on public display in the autumn.

The Minister for the Environment demanded a new environmental impact survey after a successful campaign by Swindon Friends of the Earth. A preliminary report by developers is expected in August.

After public consultation on changes to the 960 acres, where up to 6,000 homes are to be built, Swindon planners will report to the councils development control committee in December.

Work on main access roads should start in the Spring.

It seems to me that there is a certain lack of insight and a strange type of misguided intellectual prejudice, which, in reality, is ignorance, from people who look at Swindon and make jibes. Admittedly, Swindon isn't refined, with beautiful buildings, though it has some, that outsiders can swan in and out of and stare at.

Crafty week Children at Oliver Tomkins Infants School spent a week in early July engaged in arts and craft activity, and making music.

Kites, collages and murals were just a few of the creations which were presented to parents at a special assembly.

Hreod Parkways steel band played a concert, and visiting musician Andy Warn worked with children to create their own instruments.

Four samba orchestras with fifty children each playing home made instruments were created during his day in school.

Historical windfall keeps toddler group afloat Toothill's only volunteer run pre-school facility has received a financial boost in its fight to survive.

The May Link highlighted the problems faced by Toothill Community Centre's Little Poppets toddler group because of falling numbers and rising costs.

A donation of bric a bric in June Group organiser Vivienne Paxton reported that more parents included a collection of Picture Post and under threes started to attend magazines from 1938, including the group as a result of the article the first ever edition.

"They were fascinating to look which helped to stave off closure. at, full of features on society weddings, the fashions of the time and stories about the forces and references to problems in Europe," said Vivienne. "We thought they must be worth something, so we took the magazines to Swindon Stamps and Postcards in Theatre Square who gave us £50."

Diana Goddard at Swindon Stamps said the magazines were sought after items and several had already been bought to complete collections. "They were in very good condition and we were pleased to buy them."

Westlea School supporters ignored the rain and wind on 27 June and turned out in force and raised just over £3,000 for school funds.

The Headteacher and Fundraising Committee of Westlea School would like to thank everyone who came to our summer fete and made it such a wonderful success.

Green award for Westlea couple Vision and commitment to the environment over the last six years by West Swindon couple Trevor and Heather Carlton, was recognised at a ceremony in the Civic Offices on 8 July.

The hard working volunteers scooped top prize in the Great Western Community Forest's Awards for people showing commitment to environmental projects.

Five years ago, Westlea School received a forestry grant for tree planting. Unfortunately, contractors managed to mow down many of them and Trevor and Heather, whose son Christopher had just started at the school, decided to try to replace them.

In the last four years, around 1,500 shrubs and trees have been planted. A natural hedge now runs the length of the field. A willow tunnel has recently almost doubled in size. A wigwam offers play possibilities for the infants. There will be a wildflower meadow in the Autumn, followed by a path

through the marsh area and a perhaps a butterfly garden.

Trevor and Heather have worked hard to ensure that everything they have done is available to all. A ramp and a level platform for pond dipping for disabled children were added to the nature trail and Rover designed and built a special gate to meet access needs.

Children, parents and even grandparents have been involved at all stages, as have the Westlea Cub pack. Children know which tree they planted and care for it.

"You could have knocked us over with a feather when we were told that we had won a prize," said Trevor. "Our reward is the enjoyment we get out of working with the children and seeing how much they appreciate it."

Abbey Weeds and Windy Ridge are the two nicknames used by people who have moved to Swindon's northern development.

Nearly three years after the first arrivals, the majority are pleased to have moved in, but are also frustrated and concerned about the lack of services which were promised by the developers in their slogan: 'Abbey Meads - a lifestyle for the 21st Century.'

"The layout of the area with the network of cycle tracks, placing of seats and green sites has been well planned," said Vikki. "The development is good for young children. The family pubs and the number of parks are ideal."

However the lack of schools, shops, community centres, 'phone boxes and cash dispensers is very disappointing. "The development is too big not to have had these

amenities built at the start," she believes.

"There is also a need for a major superstore because the pressure on the existing one will become too great.

"To build up links within the locality we need clubs and societies, particularly for children. More information is needed about events and general issues.

Looking to the future Vikki feels the growing number of teenagers living on the development need local entertainment such as a cinema, swimming pool and youth club. "Things will improve; we're pleased we chose to come here."

Ridiculous to have two pubs before a local school This time last year Julie Walsh and her husband were preparing to move to Abbey Meads. "We knew that the shops were not ready and we would need the car to get around," explained Julie.

"1 was very surprised at our welcome when we arrived, even the local policeman introduced himself."

The big problem the family faced was finding a school to take all three children. "We applied to a local primary school which offered places to two of them. Only an appeal to the education authority resolved the matter. It seems ridiculous to get pubs in place before schools."

The family are particularly pleased with the footpaths and cycle tracks which connect all areas of the development. But she is worried about the children crossing the busy Thamesdown Drive regularly because the footbridge is still closed.

For Julie, Abbey Meads had lived up to her expectations and things will get better.

Fox problem Alarmingly high numbers of diseased foxes are roaming the streets and gardens in Greenmeadow and Abbey Meads.

Residents are particularly concerned as most are carrying an unsightly disease. The epidemic is called Far Coptic Mange. It is fatal in foxes and affects about 60% of the urban population.

Gary Brett, Animal Officer, with Swindon Borough Council warns, "this disease is passed on by body contact, so keep your animals away from foxes and please do not feed them under any circumstances.

Unfortunately they are protected under the Wild Animals Act, so we are unable to control them."

He added, "you can buy sprays at DIY stores or garden centres to discourage them from coming near your house."

World Cup winners after Adver change of heart Windmill United's young footballers are to receive £250 in prize money after Swindon's paper The Evening Advertiser made a u-turn following publication of their plight in last month's Link magazine.

The team of West Swindon youngsters, organised by 10 year old Shane Sturrock, were very unhappy when the Advertiser cancelled the under 12s section of their mini-World Cup tournament in June. Having already accepted their entry, Shane was telephoned to be informed that no other teams had entered and the competition was being reorganised into two age groups.

The July edition of The Link reported the boys' disappointment and anger. Many of their parents felt that the Advertiser should have made some gesture to acknowledge the boys' effort to organise a team, and compensate them for their rejection. An invitation by the Advertiser to watch the finals of the tournament in which they

had hoped to play merely rubbed salt in the wound.

The Advertiser have now agreed to pay the team the full prize money for their section of the event, on condition that £100 is given to charity. The Leukaemia Research Foundation has been chosen to receive the donation.

Dad Terry Sturrock said, "we're very pleased with the decision it's great! To boys of this age, it is quite a big deal." He will be writing to the paper to thank them for thinking again.

There are two sessions: • 10.30am to 1pm for 8 to 11 year olds • 130pm to 4pm for 12 to 15 year olds.

The Fantastic Voyage reading game offers all children the opportunity to read their way through the library.

Simply register at your nearest library then select a book or story tape. When you have finished, tell the story to the staff or special helpers and you collect a bookmark, then read on! Once you have read

four books or listened to the tapes you get an invitation to a party, where you will be presented with a certificate.

Take part from 4 August at West Swindon library, until the end of the month. If you select a book or tape you do not like, change it for something else. You won't have time to be bored this summer.

Anyone living locally is welcome to send in an article. Recollections of games and pranks played from before the days of computers and television are of particular interest.

However, one set of celebrations that certainly managed to make the news were those surrounding the 50 year anniversary of the National Health Service.

It seemed particularly appropriate that is was amidst these celebrations that outline planning permission went through for a brand new hospital for Swindon.

Now that the proposed site has been approved, there will be more local consultation about the services to be provided in the hospital, which will include a kidney dialysis unit, and how they will be arranged.

This is a great opportunity for both patients and carers to influence key decisions and to help create a hospital that really meets the needs of the people of Swindon.

Our National Health Service was introduced by the post-war Labour Government and remains one of the few healthcare systems in the world that is free at the point of access. From the start, the main political battles over the health service were fought over how to manage and distribute finite resources most fairly and effectively.

FOR A SERVICE THAT GOES BEYONP -

The controversial 'solutions' proffered by the previous government in the 1980s led to a two-tier health service.

This Government has already taken measures to abolish the damaging internal market, and is now looking to shape a health service that is fit for the 21st Century.

This month saw the passing of an anti-landmines bill. The Government has been pushing for an international ban on anti-personnel landmines and was one of over 120 countries that signed the Ottawa Treaty in December last year.

We have already introduced a moratorium on the use of landmines and destroyed half of the UK's stock of landmines. The new legislation will ban the use, production and transfer of landmines. We are leading the way for this treaty to become international law, so that we can reduce the number of people who continue to be killed and maimed by landmines every day.

In Swindon, a big consultation exercise has been launched on where to build up to 9,000 more houses by 2011. Views and comments should be sent to Swindon Borough Council by 28 August.

Activity just does not stop in Swindon. I hosted the first of the Labour Party's summer 'business breakfasts' here recently.

Around 100 business people including large firms such as Allied Dunbar and smaller ones came to hear Barbara Roche MP from the Department of Trade and Industry speak. The minister was well received and this was a good opportunity to develop and strengthen the excellent relationships between Swindon businesses and between them and the Government.

Swindon became a recordbreaker (again!) in July. As well as a Swindonian at No.1 in the Charts, around 5,000 school students attended the world's largest ever 'mind-mapping' exercise at Swindon Town Football Club. I was there to witness this alternative way to learn, which attempts to use all parts of your brain.

Everyone enjoyed the day. Even the huge projector screen was an event - apparently it was in Paris the day before for the Three Tenors at the World Cup. Arts space under threat West Swindon could lose its only major arts and performance facility, the Link Arts Suite, unless a way to make it pay can be found.

An initial report to a Swindon Council direct labour organisation committee on 29 July proposes that the arts suite be turned into a Active Lifestyle health and fitness centre. A further report to the community and leisure committee is expected in the autumn.

The suite includes a 150 capacity performance venue with lighting, sound and projection facilities. As well as a foyer with bar, there are also craft and photographic studios. It has played host

to jazz, rock and classical concerts, dance, theatre, comedy, film and is being used by local schools for performances.

Link Centre manager Alan Richards recognises the unique nature of the Arts Suite. "It is a shame that it has been under utilised," he said, acknowledging that, as a sports and leisure facility, the centre management lacks the knowledge and expertise to market an arts venue effectively.

manager Roger Byrne said it had been difficult to effectively use the art suite ever since dedicated staff had been cut from the budget several years ago. Now that the council's financial position is so poor, ways of generating funds are being looked at.

"The Link Centre health suite is now outdated and too small. With the growth of West and North Swindon, we believe there is a market for a high quality active lifestyle centre.

"We still require a conference and performance space and propose to upgrade the Link's community suite hail by installing movable seating and theatre lighting."

Greendown teacher Tim Noble who has worked throughout this term with children from Salt Way School on The Odyssey said it would be tragic if the Arts Suite closed. "It is the only purpose built performance venue in the area; it cannot be matched in schools. With the autumn Shakespeare Festival and other projects in mind, a way must be found to keep it available to the arts."

Despite weather ranging from drizzle to monsoon, the Old Town Festival on 11 and 12 July was once again a colourful attraction for the whole family.

Launching the festival for the first time was a Jolly Brolly Parade which brought together some of the wackiest umbrellas ever seen in the town. Dainty decorated numbers to massive creations swayed to the jaunty tunes of the Adamant Marching Band, accompanied by clowns unicycling and juggling.

Get the size right first time Although the holidays are upon us, harassed parents will be thinking about school uniform for next term.

It's the last thing that children will be interested in and getting them to the shops to try on clothing can be a source of aggravation.

Buying items for the kids to try at home can be hit and miss, but school uniform supplier Jensons of Gorse Hill have come up with a helpful sizing chart showing the child's height and age against waist, chest and neck measurements. With the chart you should be able to buy the right size first time and reduce the times you have to return to a shop to exchange garments.

Summer play keeps boredom at bay Swindon Borough Council's Play Service will be running free playschemes for 5 - 14 year olds in the school holidays.

Playschemes offer children fun-filled days with organised games, arts and crafts activities staffed by experienced playworkers.

Parents should note that children need to be registered when they first attend. Places are available on a first come, first served basis. They cannot be booked in advance. Children are free to come and go, though a careful eye is kept on younger ones. They should wear suitable clothes and bring a packed lunch and plenty to drink.

Swindon Street Festival 4 Swindon town centre will be alive and vibrating this summer with the sights and sounds of the 1998 Swindon Street Festival - the fourth of its kind, writes Alison Bruce.

Wiltshire Fest Soul Man awards top marks to school singers "Hey, no chewing in school," exclaimed veteran soul singer Sam Moore as he shook hands with Greendown School headteacher Ian Matthews on 16 July. Gum removed, he proceeded to charm everybody around him.

The legendary entertainer - who made his name during the 60s in the Stax duo 'Sam and Dave' with hits like Hold I'm Comin', Soul Sister Brown Sugar and the million selling Soul Man - was visiting the school to meet the youngsters who will be backing him on stage at the Wiltshire Festival Party in the Park at Lydiard on 15 August.

Greendown singers were invited to open the Party - the first ever school to perform on the pop day after they knocked over festival organiser Andy Cotton at a fundraising cabaret event last November. They will be back on stage to provide the backing chorus to 'John the Revelator,' sung by Sam Moore in the recent Blues Brothers 2000 film.

A five piece band and 16 girl chorus belted out 'Gimme Some Lovin' in the school drama studio.

So impressed was Sam that he is asking Festival organisers if they could do more together. "The kids were fantastic. To see young people performing live, and with so much enthusiasm is just great.

"Music and arts in schools back home have been killed off by budget cutbacks. There are metal detectors at the entrances to try and stop

Sam spent two hours at Greendown talking with youngsters about his life in show business and the famous names he has recorded with. "What keeps me going is knowing whether I can still do it," he said. "I'm always nervous before every show. I can't always remember the words, but once I catch the mood of the audience, it usually goes well."

the Park are Alexander O'Neal, Dannii Minogue, Bonnie Tyler, Eurovision song contest winners Katrina & The Waves and Ultra.

The Classic Extravaganza on Friday 14 August sees the return of Jae Alexander and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, with soloist Bethan Dudley, Andrew Goode and international cellist Julian Lloyd Webber.

The aerobatics display by a World War II Spitfire takes place again and the evening will end with the traditional fireworks over Lydiard House.

Calling keen dolls house people Dolls house hobbyist Carole Timson from Nine Elms sent an email recently to the swindonlink web site wanting to make contact with other miniatures enthusiasts.

As a child, Carole longed vainly

for a dolls house. Now she spends every spare moment working on a nine roomed Georgian miniature.

From mitring the corners of minute skirting boards and fitting a miniature kitchen to electrifying candelabras, Carole has become a dab hand at DIY in 1/12 scale.

Carole, left, finds it utterly compelling. "This has become such a fascinating hobby that I get withdrawal symptoms when time is short and I cannot busy myself in making something for the dolls house. Even my husband takes an interest and makes things for me."

Carole is keen to hear from anyone interested in forming a group to share ideas and help each other.

Farmer makes case against the council

Well known farmer Rupert Burr starts his appeal in August against Swindon Council's planning restrictions on the use of Roves Farm for weddings and barn dances.

As a result of the loss of income, he was unable to keep the farm open to visitors after the end of April.

Rupert has been collecting letters of support and over 4,500 have been sent to the planners. Five hundred were signed on 27 June when he brought livestock to the West Swindon Centre. "It was a marvellous day," he said. "West Swindon people have always been so supportive of our centre. Market organiser Maurice Mapson said he had brought traders together to restart the market in response to demand.

Thousands of leaflets had been distributed, but response from shoppers had been disappointing.

Youngsters attending the Hreod Parkway Summer Literacy School will be competing in teams to design, make and create an advertising campaign for the best fantasy chocolate bar for the year 2000.

The project organised by Learning Works to run between 10 and 21 August is part of Swindon Authority's successful bid for six literacy schools in the government's drive to raise educational standards.

The Bishop's visit followed a recent presentation from Francis David of the Busoga Trust about the severe lack of clean water in Uganda and youngsters have been raising money for a deep well in the Lowero diocese.

Bishop Evans and his wife Robina were visiting churches, schools and community projects in the Bristol diocese before attending the Lambeth Conference of the Anglican Communion from 18 July to 9 August.

Bishop Evans described the oppression under the brutal Idi Amin regime. The pupils heard that anyone speaking out for freedom put their lives in danger; Bishops who felt it right to appeal for justice were martyred because they stood up to the tyrant.

He encouraged the children to work for peace, justice and freedom in the world. After the assembly, Bishop Evans said, "we are all as one, no matter what creed, race or colour. We must strive for justice; it is so important to make the world a better place."

They attended a music class where pupils were learning to play the school's famed steel drums.

Headteacher Andrew Fleet described the reaction when invited to join in. "The Bishop jumped out

of his seat and spent 20 minutes playing them."

The couple's visit was a moving occasion said Mr Fleet. "The Bishop has an excellent manner with young people. He lived out his beliefs with us. He is a very powerful person in a quiet and gentle way."

The school is exploring how closer links can be created with the Lowero diocese.

Author to speak about hope out of oppression Killing Fields, Living Fields has been voted book of the year at the Christian Booksellers Convention.

It tells the story of the church in Cambodia which has survived despite the terrible killings which have taken place.

Its author Don Cormack, will be speaking at Freshbrook Evangelical Church on Tuesday 11 August on 7.30pm.

Young, homeless and in Swindon

Volunteers needed urgently

One time West Swindon schoolgirl Candy Shepherd, 18, contacted The Link about being homeless.

We invited her to write about her experiences.

Being homeless is tough; not just tough, but hard, stressful and very, very upsetting. If you could just think how much stress young people of Swindon go through daily, statistics will horrify you.

As a resident of Townsend House, I can now tell you what being homeless is actually like.

Townsend House was first founded in 1873 when the first women's hostel was opened in London and eventually more hostels were opened around the UK. Townsend House is owned by a homeless project named 'The Girls Friendly Society'.

Townsend House in Old Town was opened in 1973 to give accommodation to homeless women aged 16 to 25. Provided at Townsend House is 24 hour support, advice on benefits and counselling.

I've lived at Townsend House since 18 January 1998. I was in foster care in West Swindon and attended Greendown School. After leaving school I decided it was time to move on. Like most teenagers I went through a rebellious stage, and both my foster mother and myself decided it would be a good idea if I moved out.

So here I am. I can admit to being a strong willed character. I coped quite well, but it wasn't easy.

vate myself, I found, was very difficult and things went from bad to worse.

I didn't realize how much I depended on my mum. I went from being ayoung schoolgirl toagrown woman within months. I cooked, washed, ironed and cleaned so I could survive daily, and this was all done by my mother before.

Most people don't realize how lucky they are. Most youths and a majority of my friends who still live at home are forever complaining if their parents ask them to hoover the lounge or do some washing up.

I feel I have been very lucky in life, although I had an awful childhood. I do think I was blessed, because I was privately fostered by a lovely family when I was 14 years old, who have all been such a strength and support throughout the years and for more years to come.

I can say being homeless is hard, yet I am one of the lucky residents of Townsend House. All of us are in the same boat so we can support each other.

The Relate Centre in Swindon sees over 1,000 people each year and many appointments take place in the evening.

In order to provide this service volunteer receptionists are needed.

Relate cannot operate without them.

Rape support line open A free, confidential helpline service for women and men who have been sexually assaulted started taking calls on 2 July.

Every year, hundreds of men and women are raped, suffering physical and emotional pain, often alone. Many are too frightened or embarrassed to tell anyone what has happened.

Community Fire Watch to be launched Firefighters at Westlea Station have selected parts of West and North Swindon to run a fire safety education campaign in the autumn.

Shaun Dunhan, below, outlined the project where specific areas will have a designated firefighter from Group 1 at Westlea.

"Our aim is to reduce the number of fires and associated deaths and injuries in the local community by providing fire safety information which can be tailored to the needs of the public."

Thanks from three peaks climbers After all the hard training by Westlea fire fighters, the Three Peaks Challenge in aid of charity was completed on 25 June amid torrential rain and low temperatures, writes Martin Lloyd of Westlea Fire Station.

Fly-strike in rabbits Advice from Emma Strange of the Purton Veterinary Group on keeping your rabbit healthy During the warm summer months, pet rabbits are at risk from maggot infestation. Older, sick and disabled rabbits are at most risk.

The flies lay their eggs, which hatch into maggots that feed on the rabbit, burrowing into its skin.

Once into sound flesh, they produce toxins that create a state of shock and perhaps even death.

Flies are attracted by moisture and odour: • Faecal or urine contamination of the coat attacts flies to lay eggs.

• Wounds or open sores are also ideal sites.

• Damp bedding provides a perfect environment for egg-laying and maggot growth.

Prevention is better than cure. Here are some ways to help keep your

rabbit in good health: • Effective hutch hygiene is the best defence - use plenty of good quality, absorbent bedding - change any soiled bedding daily - once a week, thoroughly clean and disinfect hutch • Examine your rabbit every day - check that the fur is clean, dry and not matted - overweight rabbits find it difficult to groom themselves • Feed a good quality, balance diet which is high in fibre and and protein - avoid leafy greens and watery vegetables that can cause diarrhoea

Chippers get start up boost West Swindon skill swap scheme Chippers were able to celebrate the news of a ÂŁ200 start-up grant at their inaugural meeting at the Link Centre on 4 July.

The grant, from Swindon Council's Economic Development Department, will cover printing and promotional costs. This should help the scheme get up and running and draw in a wide range of people interested in taking part.

West End when she left the Art Educational School, Tring, last year. But after four months spent cruising the coast of South America in a Parisian style show, she's hooked on the lifestyle.

She dances in a West End musicals selection two or three times a week aboard the 'Tropicale,' part of the prestigious Carnival Cruise Line.

As well as performing her routines, many of which she choreographs herself, Kirsty takes aerobics classes and has embarkation duties. However, she still finds plenty of time to enjoy life at sea and on shore. She has just gained a scuba diving qualification, which will allow her to dive anywhere in the world.

Kirsty started dancing at the Tanwood School of Dance in Old Town at the age of five. For the last eleven years, Christmas has been dominated by pantomime performances.

The Wyvem Theatre's 1996 Summer Youth Project, 42nd Street, is described by her mum Barbara as 'one of the highlights of my life.'
