New hazard on danger road The appearance ofanew telephone box on Cartwright Drive, Shawls, once again, causing concern about safety to pedestrians in the area. The box is located on the crown of a bend at the eastern end of Cartwright Drive, adjacent to a large play area and opposite the entrance to Worlidge Drive. Jane Hillier, who lives across the road from the newly installed box, contacted The Link to point out the additional dangers created by its siting. Jane has been featured in The Link on a number of occasions expressing her worries about the hazards to pedestrians and drivers using the road. Cartwright Drive was planned with wide sweeping curves to slow drivers down. However they seem to be encouraged to go faster even though the maturing trees and shrubs next to the road have reduced visibility. The construction of a large play area on theothersideof Cartwright Drive eighteen months ago also caused anger amongst residents

who fear for children's safety as they try to cross the road. The arrival of the BT box is the final straw for Jane. "It's a stupid place to put it. We might need a public telephone but how did they decide that was the place to put it.

"Anybody who stands on the curb and sees the traffic shooting by, and then tries to cross Cartwright Drive, would realise that it's a very dangerous place. Continued on page 2
