W. Swindon Health Services under threat A local councillor is worried that Health Visitors, District Nurses and Midwives will be thrown out of their offices in West Swindon. The lease for three houses at 4 - 6 Deerhurst Way from Thamesdown. Borough Council has now expired and it proposes to reclaim the properties and return them to use as much needed council houses. The Swindon Health Authority has used the houses as a base for primary health care workers since 1977, in the absence of a permanent health centre to serve the area. In addition to being a local base for health service staff, the ground floor of the houses are used for baby clinics, ante-natal classes, immunisation sessions and a point for receiving health advice.

Thamesdown councillor Tony Free, who represents Toothill, Westlea and Shaw, said in an exclusive comment to The Link, "I am determined that the only centre for primary health care servingthe 30,000 peopleof West Swindon is maintained until the Health Centre is built next to the Link Centre. "I will be calling a meeting between Thamesdown's Housing Department and the Health Authority to reslove the problem. I understand the desperate need for council housing, but the already bulging population of West Swindon must have good health care. Some parts like Shaw and Sparcells are very isolated. It's essential that the health workers have a local base." New health facilities - see page 23.
