The National Trust - with its headquarters in Swindon - sells over 6 million cuppas every year at its properties around Britain, but none of it is supplied from Fairtrade sources. This means the people who grow the tea do not receive the guaranteed price for their product only offered by the Fairtrade Foundation, nor do they benefit from a community premium which sees money invested in education and basic healthcare infrastructure like a village well to supply clean water. In 2010 she and classmates spent two weeks hiking across Romania and helping to decorate a school. In July the Cirencester College student will be travelling to the Nakuru Rift Valley region of Kenya as part of a New College YOUnite outreach project to volunteer in two schools. But she has to raise £1,400 and is asking readers to support her at a charity night on Tuesday 2 April at Peatmoor’s Bombay Lounge restaurant. Hannah said: “I’ve always wanted to do more volunteer work whilst also experiencing different cultures and seeing new parts of the world since the Romania trip. “When I heard that there was a place available on the New College trip it seemed like a perfect opportunity for me. Commenting on the result she said: “The staff worked really hard under what is a much more challenging new inspection framework. “The last time we were inspected in June 2010 we achieved a satisfactory rating. But this rating no longer exists. Under the new framework more regular inspections will be required for a school achieving a category less than good.” Alison is particularly pleased that the school’s rating for behaviour

and safety has gone from good to outstanding. Ten year 7 students at Isambard Community School have worked with students at neighbouring Uplands Special School to come up with a collection of joint stories that have been published in a series of books.

As part of a project to improve links between the schools on the North Swindon Learning Campus, the youngsters from Isambard spent time talking to counterparts at Uplands about their interests and hobbies in order to make the books as personal as possible. The Isambard students had four weeks to plan and create the books, many of which included kinaesthetic and auditory elements to further engage the students at Uplands. The youngsters then returned to Uplands to read their work. Year 7 student Erica Hopkinson said the group felt honoured to be

chosen to take part. “I really enjoyed the project with Uplands students. I was a little nervous at first but felt very welcomed. They gave us inspiration, although we were worried about their reaction when we went back. “But as soon as we started reading we were delighted to see the excitement on their faces.” English teacher Jen Moore added that most of the writing took place in the students’ own time, during lunch hours and at home. “They showed impressive commitment by putting in a lot of extra hours,” she said. Isambard and Uplands have plans for more joint projects.

On the eve of the twentieth Swindon Festival of Literature, Juliet Platt talks with festival founder and director Matt Holland, right, on literature, Lower Shaw Farm, and the value of people talking and listening to one another. Formerly a boy gaucho in Paraguay, farm labourer, export executive and freelance book reviewer for the broadsheets, these days Matt is in his element with mud on his shoes, dirt under his finger nails and negotiating with literary agents. Describing how it feels to see the Festival of Literature attain its twentieth anniversary, Matt said: “A lot has happened but I feel as fresh, if not fresher, about the festival as I did in 1994. “In the early years, there were naysayers who reckoned that literature was too long a word for Swindon; it made me a little uncertain. Neverthe-

less, literature remained important to me, and, by coming to the festival in such great numbers over the past twenty years, the people of Swindon have shown that they too value literature and ideas. “But we have to be realistic. Six to eight thousand people visit the festival each May which is fewer than an average gate for a football match at the County Ground. Literature is still a minority interest activity. But when someone stops me in the street and says they’re still thinking about what an author said at a previous festival, then I know it’s worthwhile.” Matt has lived and worked in Swindon for the past 32 years, making his home at Lower Shaw Farm, with his wife Andrea Hirsch and three now grown-up children. During their tenancy, Lower Shaw Farm has become a haven for courses, community events, idea sharing, and exploring sustainable

St George’s Day

About us - What is inSwindon BID?

Swindon is all set to celebrate St George’s Day. A 20ft high figure of England’s patron saint will proudly parade through the town centre on Tuesday 23 April. The giant mannequin will lead a procession from Regent Street to Wharf Green via Canal Walk to start a day of celebrations. Teaming-up with local schools, children will get involved in a host of activities including sport, arts and crafts and playing games on the Big Screen. Star of Soldier, Soldier meets local heroes The Agatha Christie Company will bring Go Back To Murder to the Wyvern’s stage from Monday 8 to Saturday 13 April. Armed Forces Day 2013 For its sixth year running, inSwindon BID will be organising the annual Armed Forces Day badging ceremony in Swindon town centre. inSwindon BID are asking military men and women to register today to receive a unique Veteran’s badge honouring any former members of the Armed Forces who have fought in conflicts and peace keeping missions since World War Two. Simon Jackson BID’s Farewell to inSwindon. After a 5 years service, CEO of inSwindon BID Company, Simon Jackson, is leaving. Mr Jackson, who is stepping down to pursue other business opportunities, described leaving inSwindon BID Company as, “a tough decision after successfully winning the ballot in February 2012. “I have met some incredible people since being in post in Swindon, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support and send my best wishes and hopes that Swindon can realise its full potential.” Mr Jackson’s official leaving date will be 12th April, by which time the board of directors hope to have appointed his successor. Joining the company back in

October 2008, Simon soon put a number of strategic planning initiatives in place in hope of successfully renewing the BID in 2012. Schemes included reducing the car parking costs, the appointment of the street team ambassadors, successfully winning the British BIDs Accreditation for 2011, the launch of the My Loyalty Card scheme and upgrade of radio systems for both daytime and night time retailers. With a background career in the Royal Navy, Simon soon made links with the Armed Forces and now Armed Forces Day is an annual event in Swindon

town centre. Other successful events included hosting the Jahmene Douglas homecoming tour with the X-Factor, the Disney Light Switch-On, the start of The Royal Opera House Screenings, Last Night of the Proms, as well as the Olympic torch relay, and screening of the Olympics and Paralympics.

Madam Renards, which is dedicated to producing and promoting professional performing arts in the Swindon area, launches a brand new arts festival for the town between 5 and 9 April. Six shows including one act surrealist comedies, a Greek tragedy, drama, opera and a musical take place in different venues. Former Ridgeway School student and Swindon Town FC academy player Nick Dodd, who is now based in Los Angeles, has been awarded the 2012 Nike Developmental Coach of the Year by Southern California’s youth soccer governing body, Cal South. It recognises high quality instruction, promoting good sportsmanship, fair play and an exemplary attitude towards players and the game. Nick has written several articles for The Link encouraging talented young sportsmen and women to consider applying for scholarships to attend college in the USA. Nine- year-old Eloise Johnson from Blunsdon demonstrated her gymnastic talent at the South West Springboard Competition at Melksham in February, competing alongside 45 other young gymnasts, winning gold in the vault category and silver overall for vault, beam, bars and floor. Expressing her delight at her medal haul Eloise said: “To come second out of everyone is definitely my biggest success so far. My dream is to compete in the Olympics in 2020.” Eloise began gymnastics as a 5 year old at Esprit Academy. As well as becoming a passion it also helped her settle in better at school. Commenting on the support Eloise received, her mother Lou said: “She was struggling a bit when she first started school but the squad girls were really supportive.” Her favourite discipline is floor. Dragon boats at the ready Rotary Club of Swindon Phoenix is inviting community groups and businesses to paddle for cash in a dragon boat competition at Coate Water on Sunday 30 June. No previous experience is necessary to enter, but participants must be over 12 years. Dragon boats with a drummer and pilot will be supplied on the day with medals and a trophy awarded to those who paddle the fastest. Each team will paddle a minimum of three races on the 250m course building to finals at the end of the day. Fancy dress, even if only headwear, is optional. Parking on Pioneer Road, Oakhurst From Mark Walker, Oakhurst, commenting on the page 3 article in the March Link (The full version can be read at www.bit.ly/nspioneer)

Having lived in Oakhurst for nearly 6 years, opposite the primary school, I daily witness the reckless behaviour of a few individuals who put the safety of those around them, including children, in jeopardy. I appreciate that parents have to drop off and collect their children. Most are friendly and considerate. The true picture is that it is not just parents who make Pioneer Road dangerous. The school car park is not big enough to accommodate all the staff so they use the parking bays and spaces opposite the school. Because the car park has a barrier, visitors are forced to park on the road as well as those attending after-school clubs and delivery vans.

The zebra crossing is just past the bend opposite the school. The no parking zig zags extend half way around the bend but people park on the other side in amongst the trees. They pay no attention to the fact their car obscures the view of the zebra crossing. The Oakhurst headteacher is brilliant and he is always watching out for the children. But I fear a combination of factors will lead to an accident. I would recommend that the whole bend outside the school has double yellow lines painted on both sides of the road and that the areas in the parking bays amongst the trees nearest the road are also blocked off or have no parking signs put on the bollards.

A keen bowls player, former governor of Haydonleigh Primary School and headteacher of Rodbourne Cheney Primary, Barrie passed away on 12 December, following a short struggle with cancer. The concert raised £960 for Willows Counselling Service, but Barrie’s widow Kathleen has been able to donate a further £2,500 to the cause from funeral donations and from the proceeds of the last cryptic quiz that Barrie had set. Kathleen said: “Barrie enjoyed setting quizzes based on things like Wiltshire villages and British place names which were sold at £1 a time.

They were always really popular. The last quiz he set closed on 31 January and raised £617. The winners received their prizes, donated by RSM Tenon, at the concert.” Both Barrie and Kathleen were involved in a wide range of good causes over the years, including Swindon Scouts, Young Musicians and Haydon Wick Bowls Club, which they helped to build and where Barrie was club secretary for 15 years. In 2010 the couple were asked by their friend Rex Barnett to join his fundraising committee during his year as mayor of Swindon to support his three chosen charities: Willows,

We would like to see as many people cycling to work as possible. If you are employed in the town centre you may be eligible to receive a free bike for two months. You will get a bike (choice of styles) complete with lock, lights and pump and basic puncture repair kit. All we ask in return is that you cycle to work for at least part of the week and provide us with information about your journeys. How do I start? The first step is to call recycles on 01793 401834 and talk to one of the team and we will be able to answer your questions. To be eligible you will need to live within 25 minutes cycling distance of your workplace in the town centre.

We will then take your details and arrange an appointment for you to visit the shop and choose your bike. We will need to see proof of identity and address and will take a deposit for the safe return of the bike. Who are we? Recycles is a Salvation Army Social Enterprise based at Booth House in the town centre. We offer quality refurbished bikes for sale and a professional repair service to the public.
