The big digital switch in the West is now underway

People who receive their television signal through an aerial pointed towards the Mendip transmitter in Somerset could lose it from 7 April if they have not installed a digital freeview receiver.

The change to digital is taking place in two stages:

On 24 March, the BBC 2 analogue signal was switched off and Freeview was extended to reach all areas for the first time; On 7 April all the analogue channels will be switched off and the remaining Freeview channels will become available in all areas for the first time.

Need switchover help? On behalf of Digital UK, Age Concern Wiltshire is holding an advice point drop-in on Tuesday 7 and Wednesday 8 April, 10am to 4pm, in West Swindon Library.

This is for people receiving the Mendip signal. People who receive TV from the Oxford transmitter will changeover in 2011.

Mayor calls for curry night support

The Mayor of Swindon David Wren is holding a charity evening at the Bombay Lounge restaurant, Peatmoor on Wednesday 28 April, from 7pm.

Proceeds from the event will go the Mayor’s fund which, this year, is supporting Swindon 105.5 community radio, Thamesdown Hydrotherapy Pool, Swindon Guide Dogs and Swindon Cares.

Well known firefighter looks to teaching as next step

A long serving firefighter who lives in Westlea was taken into retirement in a cavalcade of fire engines on 2 March.

Watch manager Martin Lloyd said farewell to his mates at Westlea Fire Station and colleagues from across the town after 32 years of service at Stratton, Swindon and Salisbury, and Westlea where he was based for 16 years.

Putting on a brave face, he said he hopes to begin a new career within an education setting later in the year. “I’ve enjoyed the instructor role in the fire service and also the many talks we give about fire safety, from pre-school level right through to giving college students an experience at the fire station.

I’ll be investigating teacher training, once I’ve worked on my golf handicap this summer.”

Martin is a qualified rugby coach and is developing a business with a friend to offer sports coaching and team development to schools.

He added that the fire service he joined as an eighteen year old straight from Hreod Burna School

“Firefighters are now trained in highly technical rescue and vehicle extraction techniques and the community service role is now a major part of the job with a lot of time spent making people more aware of the dangers of fire. When I joined I was going out on 1,200 calls a year.

Now it’s more like 750 which shows how the safety message has been getting through.

“It’s not possible to highlight particular events during my career.

There are so many when I’ve been able to help people in distress which has been very rewarding. Sadly there have been some times when we’ve arrived too late to make a difference.”

Crew manager Paul Jarmey paid tribute to Martin. “we’ve had the benefit of Martin’s knowledge and his wit - over the years, and all the firefighters wish him well in the future.”

How important to you are the green fields to the west of Swindon?

Around 200 people attended a second public meeting at the end of February to discuss the Wiltshire Council proposal to allocate land for 3,000 houses at Ridgeway Farm and Pry Farm to the north of West Swindon, on Swindon’s borders but within Wiltshire.

The Link agreed to offer some pointers for anybody who wants to express opposition to this proposal by writing to the people listed below.

With a general election only weeks away, this is a clear opportunity to call for a rethink of this idea forced upon Wiltshire Council and Swindon Council by central government regional planning policy.

Opposing the proposal, Labour’s Anne Snelgrove MP believes the plans would severely impact on the infrastructure of West Swindon in relation to roads, schools and the potential of greater flooding. “Wiltshire Council’s proposal is misguided and is opposed across the political spectrum and by local residents. Surely it would be more appropriate for Wiltshire County Council to build new affordable housing in the market towns around the county that desperately need housing.”

Robert Buckland, South Swindon Conservative candidate, says “something is very wrong with a system that, whilst paying lip service to consultation, seems to ignore everyone apart from those with direct or specialist knowledge of planning until it is almost too late.

“The Conservatives are committed to stopping this planning on a remote regional basis and return responsibility to local authorities and fully involve the public.”

So, if you are willing to write to the people below, ask yourself: • Wiltshire and Swindon Councils have been drawing up plans as guided by the Regional Spatial Strategy (RSS). Have you been informed and involved in the process, have you been adequately consulted?

• Do you think The Pry Farm proposal is an urban extension of Swindon as Wiltshire proposes or a new village between Swindon and Purton?

• How important is it to preserve the green space between Swindon and Purton; is it important to retain agricultural land for national food security?

• Do you think the roads to the west of Swindon can cope with traffic from another 3,000 homes in Wiltshire (in addition to approximately 3,000 houses still to be built in or proposed for North Swindon)?

• Will this development create major flooding problems at the River Ray?; • Would there be a detriment to the quality of life for the existing Swindon residents?

• Given that the evidence for the RSS plans were drawn up in the mid-2000s based on high economic and population growth targets, should this be reexamined in the light of the recession? Do we still need all these houses?

• And do you think the influence of housing developers on the planning should be reduced; indeed should they be excluded?

Hopes are high that a building in Freshbrook will soon be once again at the centre of community life.

The West Swindon Children’s Centre in Freshbrook is in urgent need of people willing to become members of its board of trustees.

After three summers looking forlornly at other youngsters enjoying the lovely play equipment at Lydiard Park, children with disabilities now have a roundabout accessible to wheelchairs.

Coun Keith Williams, Swindon Council’s cabinet member for leisure services, welcomed youngsters from Uplands Special School in mid-March to try it out. “I know it’s taken a bit of time to arrive, but I’m delighted the roundabout is here in time for the Easter and summer holidays. Children of all abilities can now have fun together.”

Rachel Reid from The Prinnels, who with Uplands teacher Lorna Breslin, first spoke about the need

for accessible equipment at Swindon Council’s cabinet in 2007, said, “it’s brilliant to see the roundabout in place and in use. I think our campaign has brought about a new understanding for inclusive play within the council.”

Coun Williams agreed and said he was pressing for similar equipment to be installed at other strategic locations in the town. “We need to give families the chance to enjoy Swindon’s outdoors together.”

A West Swindon church will launch a permanent furniture recycling scheme in April for families in need after a successful six month trial.

The brainchild of Gateway Church member Kevin Prosser, the Westlea based project will help others and prevent usable items being dumped in landfill.

The Ridgeway takes on national school support role

Wroughton’s Ridgeway School has been selected for a top role supporting schools in challenging circumstances.

Headteacher Steve Colledge, right, is one of only 76 headteachers across the country to be appointed in the latest recruitment round by the National College for Leadership of Schools and Children’s Services to the prestigious role of National Leader of Education (NLE).

It also means the school is now designated a National Support School.

To mark the appointment Mr Colledge attended the National College’s Learning and Conference Centre in Nottingham in March for a formal induction and training for

the role the school will play in raising standards.

NLEs use their success and professionalism as school leaders, along with the staff in their school to provide additional leadership capacity in struggling schools.

The deployment is tailor-made to suit the needs of each school in challenging circumstances.

Discover Swindon’s Polish twin After a long wait, the Swindon Torun twinning committee has set up a second trip to the town’s twin in Poland.

Organiser Stan Pajak said, “the trip will be a wonderful opportunity to sample Polish culture amid the historic surroundings of Torun, the birth place of Copernicus, the home of Teutonic knights and a university of 30,000 students matched by a wonderful old town centre with shops and restaurants.

The school had been judged and inspected on nine eco-topics - water, waste, biodiversity, global perspectives, energy, school grounds, transport, healthy living and litter.

Pupils travelled to Kew Gardens in February to receive the award.

Science teacher Peter Scutt said students had worked extremely hard, progressing through bronze and silver levels.

“We have a senior eco-team who are the driving force behind the eco-activities as well as two eco-monitors per class. As a result we’ve implemented an automatic lighting system and plan to install switches to make sure equipment is not left on stand-by overnight.”

Over the past year, pupils have also worked hard to increase recycling, promote cycling and walking to school, grow their own fruit and vegetables, reduce energy bills and raise awareness of global issues such as fair-trade and rain-forest conservation.

Kyra Jenkins, a year 8 pupil said, “we want to be a role model for other children and encourage pupils in other school to set up eco-teams.”

On 23 April Isambard will be celebrating its annual eco-day.

Meanwhile the team will be tending their vegetables for the school canteen and building bird boxes for sale at the summer fete.

Book characters brought to life

Children at Brook Field Primary School, Shaw celebrated International Book Day on 12 March with children and staff dressing up as their favourite characters and whole classes took up the theme of a particular book.

Exploring cultures around the world

Children at Peatmoor Primary School spent a week touring the planet discovering different cultures through dance, demonstrations and practical activity.

Each class visited the Japanese restaurant at Stanton House Hotel where they discovered the complexity of the language and the way it is written, played Japanese children’s games and heard the famous children’s book The Very Hungry Caterpillar read to them in Japanese by school’s liaison presenter Kimiko Moyse.

Vandals wreck kit for disabled children

In mid-March the bed of a trampoline was slashed and safety ropes cut on a climbing frame in the play garden shared by Koalas special opportunities playgroup and Special Tots at the Salt Way Centre in Middleleaze.

“I nearly cried when I saw the damage, it was utterly mindless and malicious,” said Koalas manager Stephanie Hathaway. “The equipment was bought with grants from Legal & General and the Have a Heart appeal for children with special needs and their siblings.

“It’s three years since we moved to West Swindon. We aimed to complete the outdoor play area this year.

The people who did this should be very ashamed of themselves.”

Railway historian Steve Wakefield continues his reflections on the 175th year of the Great Western Railway and looks back on the initial designs for the line and the laying down of the first rails.

On 31 August 1835 the Great Western Railway received the Royal Assent for its second Bill, to build a complete railway between London and Bristol. But strangely, whilst Parliament had indeed sanctioned the route, there was no mention of the gauge. Perhaps Brunel was opaque with his proposals for a broad gauge railway.

In October 1835 he had decided upon a 7ft ¼” (7ft) broad gauge for the GWR which the board adopted.

It was also different from Stephenson’s railway in that it would not use stones to lay the rails on,

and by July the GWR had reached Twyford. In March 1840 the railway had reached Reading and in July 1840 had arrived at Faringdon Road (Challow) and Swindon by December of that year.

In May 1841 the last section from London was completed to Chippenham to connect with the section being built from Bristol and Bath in August 1840, that finally arrived in June 1841. The 118 mile broad gauge railway between London and Bristol was now complete and passengers and goods could travel between the cities in much shorter times.

Whilst he was busy constructing the railway, as well as Clifton Suspension Bridge, the Thames tunnel and building the wooden hulled paddle wheel steamship Great Western, Brunel still managed to find time to marry Mary Horsley in July 1836.

Despite Brunel’s punishing professional timetable, the first section of the GWR from Paddington to Maidenhead riverside, now known as Taplow, was opened in June 1838 at about the time he was working on the design of the metal hulled SS Great Britain.

I.K Brunel’s first proposal was for a railway of 4ft 8½ width, as this was Stephenson’s preferred gauge. It had been around since Roman times and was the distance between wheels on the axle of horse drawn carts and wagons.

And due to restricted finance being available he put forward the case for two short lengths of railway - Bristol to Bath and London to Reading. The Kennet and Avon Canal would then be used to transport goods between the two destinations.

In Parliament the proposal was ridiculed and the Bill thrown out in 1834 because it was an incomplete scheme. The acerbic comment that summed it up was: ‘it would be a head and a tail without a body and neither Great nor Western, nor even a railway.’

Fifty nine people took part in a two hour Aerobathon involving Body Attack aerobics, Body Step, Body Combat and Body Balance with half the participants raising over £1,600 in sponsorship for the charity’s Child’s Voice Appeal.

Swindon Croquet Club is looking forward to a successful season starting on 1 April.

For the first time in many years the club is fielding four competitive teams of differing ability in various leagues.

Experienced players and beginners are always welcomed and a regular programme of courses is offered in Association croquet and the more sociable, simpler game of Golf croquet.

Contrary to popular belief, croquet is neither a vicious game nor one for toffs. The game is suitable for young and old alike, and men and women play on an equal footing. A handicap system means there is a level playing field for all players.

Walking the Ridgeway

Women’s walk for Prospect

Prospect Hospice is looking for women to sign up for its flagship fundraising event, the Starlight Walk around Swindon, on 26 June.

Now in its third year, the Starlight Walk last year raised £65,000 for Prospect, and has previously brought together more than 600 women, many taking part in memory of loved ones. This year - Prospect’s thirtieth - organisers are hoping over 1,000 walkers will take part in either 10k or 15k distances.

It’s been described as a mixture of a girls’ night out, a physical challenge and, for some, a time for reflection. But Prospect is also keen for men to support the event as volunteer marshals along the route.

Mad March Hare biggest ever turnout

There were lots of bunny ears and rabbit painted faces in evidence, at the third Mad March Hare on Sunday 7 March.

Taking place in gloriously sunny weather, 720 entrants ran, walked and pushed baby buggies around either 5km or 10km circular routes from Greendown School in Grange Park, through parts of West Swindon and Lydiard Park. Eighty volunteers directed participants along the way.

The first event in 2008 raised £9,000 for Breakthrough Breast Cancer (Wiltshire), and £12,000 last year. A much higher total is expected this year when sponsorship is collected.

Christine Gilliard from Middleleaze said she had just been diagnosed with breast cancer but was taking part in the Mad March Hare because it was organised by Swindon volunteers. “I’ve not started treatment yet so I decided to help Breakthrough whilst I’ve got the energy. It’s lovely to see so many people you know taking part, and also knowing that nearly everybody is from Swindon.”

Putting her back into marathon run

A doctor who admits that in her younger days the phrase ‘warm up girls’ at the start of a PE lesson meant a dash for the nearest radiator, is asking readers to sponsor her London Marathon bid.

Running to find a cure for muscle disease

The maddest of them all Les Slinn and Mike Buss, Swindon’s two craziest athletes, came together to help boost the Mad March Hare on 7 March.

Les departs on 31 March to take part in the world’s toughest and most gruelling marathon race, the Marathon Des Sables, which will see him running for 243km in the blistering 120º degree heat of the Sahara desert.

He has to carry everything he needs to survive for six days including food, clothes, sleeping bag, and also an anti-venom kit in case he encounters scorpions or snakes.

Water is supplied at checkpoints on the route.

Bridge of controversy

Taw Hill resident Tim Lundy has contacted The Link to query why an old red brick bridge on the Swindon & Cricklade railway line is not being restored.

He uses the bridge along with other ramblers and dog-walkers to access the fields beyond Thamesdown Drive and Mouldon Hill park and objects to being advised by railway volunteers to keep off the track, which he says is not used or even built yet.

“It seems odd that the railway wants to destroy the bridge to save money since they claim to be a preservation society and registered charity,” said Mr Lundy.

The railway trust’s building works representative Dave Peacey agrees that it is a shame the bridge cannot be saved. “The bridge was built over 100 years ago and it is a good example of railway heritage.”

However he pointed out the structure was deemed unsafe by engineering consultancy Halcrow when plans for the Crickade Country Way lottery bid were being drawn up.

John Ferris, chairman of the trust, is very clear that pedestrians and their pets should on no account be using the bridge. “The public do not have a right of way over the bridge which belongs to Swindon Borough Council.

“The railway leases the land on top of the bridge which has actually been condemned as unsafe by a structural engineer, so anyone trying to cross it is putting themselves at risk.”

The Swindon & Cricklade Railway Trust is currently clearing the track-bed to extend the line south to a new station at Mouldon Hill and aims to have trains running

by Easter 2011.

“The only public means of crossing the track are over the road bridge at Blunsdon station and on the path at Mouldon Hill Park,” said Mr Ferris.

Built in Swindon - and I want one

Honda’s popular British-built CR-V has been revamped for 2010 with enhanced styling, a new powertrain and transmission – and when we were asked if we’d like to try one for a week, how could we refuse, writes Link publisher Roger Ogle.

With all the travails in the motor industry, it was important to put to the test the company’s investment in the town and its confidence in its staff. And whilst industry analysts suggest the SUVs market is declining, Honda say that CR-V sales are strong and the new model builds on the strengths developed over the years since the range was launched.

Being used to smaller cars, it was great the CR-V arrived on the day the March edition was delivered from the printers. Transporting 2,500 magazines from the drop-off point in Haydon Wick is always a struggle, but it was pure joy this time as the Honda hauled them up the hill to Akers Way as if there was nothing on board.

The CR-V handled like a saloon and the higher seating position provides commanding visibility.

Steering is precise and the low centre of gravity gives it a sense of purpose, helped by strong monocoque construction; there is no sense of wallowing uncertainty that SUVs can suffer from. Braking was clear and certain.

The smooth running petrol engine made a motorway trip relaxing, especially with the sixth gear taking

the strain, whilst driving around the town was easy. Parking the bigger vehicle was a bit of a worry but the rear parking sensors ensured no mishaps.

Honda has also launched a new quieter i-DTEC diesel engine version with increased power and torque, lower NOx and particulates, and a good CO2 emissions package.

The comfortable cabin is well equipped with a somewhat daunting sat-nav audio unit, complete with USB and iPod connections.

Increased sound deadening around the engine and throughout the vehicle adds to the high-quality refinement of the CR-V, making it even quieter to drive.

Its practicality came into its own later in the trial when a visit to the recycling centre was needed. Folding the rear seats and removing the rear storage shelf revealed a huge carrying space. Spring cleaning enthusiasm took over and two trips were needed.

ing the CR-V since 2000 and their product is now exported to over 60 countries, along with the Civic and Jazz models.

HUM believe this ‘built in Britain’ message is very important for some customers and is a key factor in their purchase decision. After production of the Jazz model started in Swindon in the Autumn, customers have specifically requested Britishbuilt models Like all Hondas, the CR-V is

recognised for its high-specification equipment levels and sectorleading residual values, and the new car’s value-for-money package should continue to impress.

On the aside, most car buying decisions are usually made after many hours research and forecourt study but only a cursory test drive, rarely lasting more than 15 minutes.

Charitable golfers wanted

Swindon Children’s Cancer and Leukaemia Movement (CALM) is looking for players to take part in its annual fundraising golf day at Wrag Barn course near Highworth on Thursday 24 June.

This is a key event in the CALM fundraising calendar, with nearly £5,000 raised from entry fees and auction proceeds last year.

There will be a number of different competitions, with lunch, tea

and an evening awards ceremony included. The cost: £240 per team of 4.

All money raised will be used to provide support and assistance to families in the Swindon area who have a child that has been diagnosed with a form of Cancer or Leukaemia.
