Eco solution could be a tourist attraction
The West Swindon Forum on 9 March heard that a set of reed beds currently being built next to Shaw Forest to biologically filter contaminated water running off the former landfill site could become an eco-tourist site for bio-experts and nature lovers. The £750,000 project featured in the March Link has been designed by Swindon Council and experts from the Wildfowl and Wetland Trust at Slimbridge and should be operational by September. Polluted water will flow through a series of gravel beds so that plant root bacteria can break down leachates before flowing as clean water into the River Ray. A variety of plant types in and around the beds will attract water voles, otters, kingfishers, dragonflies and reed nesting birds. A public footpath/cycleway will be reinstated to run through the middle of the reed beds close to Sparcells.

Spring clean needed for fouled up Redhouse and Taw Hill
There have been calls for a neighbourhood clean-up since the March Link featured North Swindon residents disgusted by dog fouling on footpaths and public spaces. Gupti Gosine from Haydon End said he and his son Narad have to dodge dog mess on their daily trips to and from St Francis Primary School, Taw Hill. Recently Narad fell off his bike while swerving to avoid a pile in Haydon End Lane. Mr Gosine has suggested Swindon Council organises one of its Safe and Clean days. “It might encourage people to take more responsibility and ownership of their local area,” he said. Alison Leighfield from Taw Hill also wants to see a community effort to clean up the mess. She picks up after her own six dogs ‘Let’s keep North Swindon clean of dog mess,’ dog warden Glyn Eamus with Andrea Watson who first contacted The Link about the dog fouling problem in February
and has on occasion offered bags to owners who haven’t bothered. “I have received mainly abuse in return. I have been threatened and once my mobile phone was nearly stamped on.” Dog warden, Glyn Eamus, has received several complaints and made patrols in the area to give advice to dog walkers and to monitor the situation. “Education is the thing; you need to teach people that they have to clean up and be responsible,” he said. North map still beats Sat Navs An incident at the North Swindon Learning campus in February showed that satellite navigation systems are still not as up to date as the free North Swindon map published by The Link in 2008.
Paramedics were delayed because they could not locate the entrance to the two special schools off Tadpole Lane. This has now happened several times because, even though the schools have been open for two years, sat navs still see the postcode as a green field. A Link source said, “a delay in an ambulance finding us could be a matter of life or death. I urge people to make sure if they have experienced the same problems to notify the highways department at Swindon Council.” The Link has sent more maps to Swindon Council and the ambulance service. Throughout the day pupils took part in practical workshops, such as building a catapult and measuring the energy required to send a projectile across the classroom, designing a piece of equipment in a team and
making a ‘dragon’s den’ presentation on its merits, and discovering how much physical energy is required on a rowing machine. Singing, dancing and playing instruments are central to ‘Sounds Fun’ music sessions which have started at Salt Way Children’s Centre as well as five other locations: Sparklers Pre-School, Windmill Hill Daycare Nursery, Freshbrook Pre-School, Upper Shaw Farm Pre-School and Acorns Playgroup at Holy Trinity Church. The project is the result of a funding bid by Swindon Council and Artsmad to develop a new strand in the Early Years’ curriculum to increase music provision as an everyday activity. Experienced musicians Bill Roberts and Vicky Meadows from Play-It in Bristol lead the sessions and teach new songs and rhymes to the children. Adult group leaders are included so that they develop the skills and confidence to use music as a tool to boost language, communication and social skills. Swindon based musician Jo

Pemberton also makes regular visits to support playgroup staff and introduce new ideas. Each group has also been holding family sessions and there are free music packs and CDs to take away to encourage musical participation in the home. Freshbrook Pre-School owner Hazel Clark said she was delighted with the project. “The children love being involved in making music, their expressions are just wonderful. The project has shown us we don’t need a music specialist and we don’t need a special music time. Singing and making sounds is becoming something we do spontaneously and we’re starting to see development of language and social skills amongst the children.” Children and carers from the six centres involved in the project held a concert at Salt Way on 20 March.

Bringing a bigger picture back to life
The Golden Lion Bridge mural, the famous but deteriorating Swindon landmark, is to be given a makeover in the Spring, thanks to a new project: Swindon Does Art. Artist Ken White who painted it on a job creation programme in 1976 has been commissioned to repaint the side of the house on Fleming Way. His depiction of the bridge which crossed the canal in the town centre, where the Jubilee Clock now stands, was one of the first in a series of murals which made Swindon well known around the country in the 1970s and 80s. Helen Miah, Swindon Council’s head of culture, who asked Ken to revisit his work said the Golden Lion was very symbolic for Swindon. “I’ve wanted to see it come to life again for a long time; it’s brilliant Ken is willing to work on it again. As a former railway apprentice and a well known local artist, his evocative imagery tells a story about the town’s history which is important to the regeneration of the town centre.” Swindon Does Art aims to increase participation and involvement in arts activity by everyone across the town. After his work appeared in a huge Bayer advertising campaign in 1977, right, he was taken on by Richard Branson to paint murals in his home and in Virgin Megastores around the world, a relationship that has lasted over 30 years. He repainted the Golden Lion Bridge in 1983 and has created over 100 major murals worldwide. Jeremy Grimaldi, a Canadian working in Swindon, has set up a Facebook Group to bring together others from overseas. “I have spent a year here without much luck in terms of finding good groups of mates so I’ve decided to take my search into Europe and beyond,” he writes on Facebook. His suggestion of meeting up for drinks and meals, games of poker, football and house parties has been well received and the group has attracted over 60 members. Not all are from overseas; locals also join in to enjoy the company of people from other cultures. Members took part in the Mad March Hare (see page 30). Post Modern keeps communication flowing through art GOING TO ASCOT? NEED A HAT?
The dream of creating an affordable space to work and exhibit work in the centre of Swindon has come true for a group of artists who have turned the old Post Office in Theatre Square into the Post Modern Gallery & Studios. Artists will be in Post Modern on Saturdays 28 March, 4 and 11 April, 11am to 5pm, to launch the gallery which includes an eclectic mix of drawing, painting, photography, ceramics, collage and kinetic work. The days will include exhibitions of new work, performances, a big draw event and food from the Taste Cafe. On 28 March there will be free taster workshops in mosaics, drawing in different mediums and collage, and a chance to emulate the guerilla graffiti artist in ‘basic Banksy.’ Drop in and make your mark at the big draw event, learn a new skill, and meet a group of Swindon based artists who are trying to give the town centre a different dimension. Heart-warming generosity keeps Foodbank shelves stocked 1,000 investors needed now
Foodbank is supporting more people than ever and the Swindon community has rallied round to make sure that donations keep up with demand. "You would imagine in tighter times, people would be a little less generous but we've found the opposite," said volunteer, Russell Riggs. "Even though we’re helping more people, there has been a significant increase in donations at supermarket collections, harvest festivals and from churches." The charity helps people who are finding it difficult to put food on the table, providing basic food supplies to bridge the gap until benefits are available. Before the credit crunch Foodbank would typically give supplies to around 40 people a week. By December, that figure had risen to an average of 77 per week. Working with people in crisis, the charity acts as a barometer for the economic climate. Last summer, for the first time, members of the building trades began to ask for help as work dried up. Since Christmas, they have been joined by people affected by the closure of Honda and Woolworths.

"It could happen to you or your neighbour," said Russell. "We help the ordinary person in the street who has reached a crisis." He is confident that, no matter how bad things get, Foodbank will find a way to cope. "In the three and half years since we began, people have always come through for us. Hundreds of runners and walkers raised money for Breakthrough Breast Cancer on the second Swindon Mad March Hare around Lydiard Park, starting at Greendown School. Joint organiser Eunice Salmon said, “it was a fantastic event which everybody seemed to really enjoy; the weather was great compared to the wet conditions in 2008. Race for Life 09 launched
Cancer Research UK supporters are asking Swindon women to do something amazing to help more people survive cancer. Registration is now open for the event at Lydiard Park on Saturday 11 July and Sunday 12 July. Race for Life is the UK’s largest women-only fundraising event series. Women of all ages and fitness levels can walk, jog or run 5k. Organisers are aiming to top the 2008 entry of over 4,500 women who helped raise £268,000. Closing the door on Pets at Home
For the past 22 years, Sheila Mitchell’s schedule has revolved around feeding times for a variety of animals cared for through her Pets at Home business.
Now Sheila from Westlea is looking forward to an end to clock watching and having time to spend with her husband as she winds down Pets at Home in April. She said, “we want the freedom to be able to do what we want. It’ll be nice to not have to get back for a five o’clock round and also not to have to get up with the sparrows.” Pets at Home has cared for a variety of creatures from cats, rabbits and guinea pigs to birds, fish, snakes and lizards. Sheila is proud that through all the years, she has never had to let anybody down. Even on her daughter’s wedding day, Sheila completed her morning round before the ceremony and interrupted her celebrations for tea time feedings. “I will miss the pets and people; I’ve been doing it for so long that for many customers, I’ve looked after generations of their pets.” Many pet owners have become good friends and will miss the reassurance of having Sheila visit their home. Not only has she fed pets, she has put out bins, looked after the house and dealt with the aftermath of burglaries whilst the owners return home Sheila, who is also giving up her role as a magistrate, has plans to travel with her husband, James. During his time serving with 9th/12th Royal Lancers the couple moved around Europe and want to revisit places they have lived.

Koalas fundraising boosted by Basepoint
Basepoint Business Centre in Westlea hosted its second Health, Beauty and Wellbeing day to raise £250 for Koalas Special Needs Playgroup which is based at Salt Way Centre in Middleleaze. Each Basepoint Centre is asked by its parent company The ACT Foundation - a leading UK grant making charity - to choose a local charity to support each year, one who’s prime purpose is to improve the lives of the elderly, disabled or the disadvantaged. Basepoint’s fundraising in the last year will help Koalas build an undercover outdoor play area at Salt Way.

Remix room gets revamp
A member of Remix youth group which meets at Holy Trinity Church, Shaw, has recruited her dad to give their chill out room a makeover. Members of Remix, together with all the other youth groups who use the room, had been discussing how to revamp the room, when Lily Townsend suggested her painter/decorator dad, Rob, could provide some advice. But when he saw the pink, dark blue and deep purple walls, Rob knew his professional skills would have to come into play so that the youngsters could create their own space. Rob and cousin Steve who run Townsend Painting & Decorating donated a weekend to returning the room to a neutral colour. Keen artist Tessa Clayfield said the group had decided to paint bubbles on the wall as symbols of friendship. Group sponsor npower funded new carpets and furnishings.
