Any business that survives for this long should be applauded. But special note should be given to this community based social enterprise which only employs three people.

To grow from a print run of 10,000 in 1987 to the 26,000 printed today is impressive. So is the fact that it is still given away and entirely funded from advertising which in itself attests to the strength of Swindon’s economy during two recognise that its success is still decades of growth.

Joy at the arrival of her first granddaughter has strengthened the resolve of cancer sufferer Carol Shand to find an inner strength.

On 3 February, Carol from Grange Park, was there to cut the cord when her daughter Kinisha gave birth to Shenaya.

Places on the overnight marathon Moonwalk in London have been snapped up but there’s still time to sign up for the Bristol Sunwalk.

Eunice Salmon, co-ordinator of Swindon’s Twin Peaks walking team, would like to hear from anyone interested in taking part in the Sunwalk on 8 July.

The event promises to be a fun event for all the family. Walkers can choose their distance from 5k, 10k and a half marathon. As in the 26 mile Moonwalk, participants will be wearing decorated bras and raising money for breast cancer care and research.

Eunice said that due to the busy training schedule Twin Peaks will not be able to welcome new members until after the Moonwalk.

Children from schools across the town travelled to Ridgeway School, Wroughton, to take part the Swindon Primary School Science Festival on 8 and 9 March.

Themed the Ugly Bugs Ball, youngsters from 22 schools took part in a wide range of workshops and experiments with assistance from staff and volunteers from the Science Museum Wroughton, Greendown Community School, St. Joseph’s Catholic College, the Society of Automotive Engineers and Institute of Physics.

In 2005, they started separate baby sessions, for children aged up to 18months, where they are able to get used to the surroundings, before they move up to the toddler group.

Having catered for preschoolers, Busy Fingers is now tackling the shortage of informal social clubs for children aged 4 to 10. Co-ordinator, Debbie MusaEiggie found that, apart from uniformed groups such as Brownies and Cubs, there is little provision for this age group.

The Kids Club, which began in September, filled up so quickly that a second group had to be started.

Although parents are welcome to stay, children can be left with the CRB checked volunteers.

Activities on offer at a typical session include craft, group games, manic movement and a chill out corner. Debbie believes in giving children a degree of independence in a safe environment and does not want the club to be an extension of school. “We just put things out and let them choose what they want to do. It’s about having fun rather than being educated.”

Kids Club meets on Thursday 5.30pm to 7pm and Friday 6pm to 7.30pm.

Baby Busy Fingers is on Tuesday 9.30am to 11am and there are five toddler sessions each week.

New play area for Haydon Wick Haydon Wick Parish Council has been awarded a grant of £10,000 by Hills Recycling under the Landfill Tax Credit Scheme towards the cost of a new toddler play area at the open space to the rear of Haydon Wick Bowls Green, close to the Haydon Centre.

Work should start early in the next financial year to remove the old equipment. The area is to be enlarged to provide a modern toddler play area on a rubber safety surface.

Children attending Brook Field Primary School could be caught in a web of mobile phone radiation if a new T-Mobile mast is erected close to Shaw Village Centre on Roughmoor Way. There are already three within 800 metres of the school - one on Peatmoor Way and two at the Hillmead Employment area.

MP addresses HIV/AIDs South West Surrey MP Jeremy Hunt, below, spoke at a meeting at North Swindon Library at the end of February on work in Kenya to combat HIV/ AIDS and the need to make drugs available to children to avoid whole generations being wiped out.

Mr Hunt talked about the Hotcourses Foundation he set up to provide education for children.

The MP’s visit was organised jointly by The Link and Chris Lothian to coincide with an exhibition of his wildlife photographs taken in November for the Born Free Foundation.

Members of the Swindon charity Lights for Learning also demonstrated their revolutionary solar powered lighting system.

Chief of canal trust steering the way Late last year it looked as though the £11.75 million Cricklade Country Way lottery bid could lose momentum because of staff illness.

With a tight deadline there was no time to lose so the Wilts and Berks Canal Trust offered the services of their Chief Executive, Ken Oliver, who was already immersed in the scheme. He was officially appointed as new project manager in January.

“I’m enjoying it immensely,” said Ken. “If we succeed, we’ll deliver a very interesting place for those living in and around Swindon to enjoy themselves.”

The Cricklade Country Way will be a recreational corridor linking Swindon to the River Thames and Cotswold Water Park. It will feature eight miles of canal, 7 miles of steam railway and 17 miles of new and improved cycle paths and walk ways.

If the lottery application is successful, in about five to eight years visitors will be able to park at Moulden Hill, take a water bus to Cricklade then return on a train run by the Swindon & Cricklade Railway Society.

Pat reaches her century Life hasn’t been easy for Pat Mills, but with a resilient spirit and a firm belief that there’s no such word as can’t, she has reached her milestone 100th birthday.

It wasn’t until moving to Swindon in her eighties that Pat had the luxury of hot water and central heating. Her previous home in Richmond on Thames had only an outside toilet and a cold tap which meant bathing in a tin bath in front of the fire.

She came to Swindon in 1983 to be close to daughter, Hilary Millett who believes that Pat’s enjoyment of the new found luxury at Gainsborough Court in Freshbrook has been a factor in her longevity.

Until recently Pat liked to garden outside her flat. Now, with her sight and hearing not what it was, she regrets not being able to read any more. However, she enjoys TV and the company of her pet budgie.

Pat is philosophical about her hard life. Her mother died when she was only three and she remembers her brother, Charles, taking care of her. As he needed to go to school, Pat would go along with him and sit by the teacher during his lessons.

She was the only girl in a family of 6 brothers and 6 step-brothers.

At the beginning of World War I the family was broken up when several of her older brothers joined up. Some were killed and others returned severely injured or gassed.

At 14, Pat went into service, working as a mother’s help. She later worked in a laundry and then a factory. She married and had three daughters, Jackie, Valerie and

Hilary. The marriage was unhappy and Pat eventually fled with the girls.

During the war, they were evacuated to Suffolk where they lived in a farm cottage without running water or electricity and worked picking potatoes for 1d a bucket.

Bringing up a family with no state support was demanding but Pat always told them that nothing is impossible. “Mother is very resilient and old school; she worked hard all her life to make sure we could all get by,” said Hilary.

She obviously passed on her work ethic as Hilary was awarded an MBE last year for services to the NHS at the Great Western Hospital.

Pat said, “I’ve never known anything but hard work and I really don’t feel 100. It’s been a hard life but God’s been good to me and I’m grateful for his kindness.”

The school had to prepare a travel plan to qualify for a government grant which involved surveying children’s views on travelling to school.

Cycle safety was reinforced with cycling proficiency training and walking was also encouraged with a special walk to school week.

Headteacher Clive Westall is pleased that so many pupils get to school under their own steam. He said they arrive energised and ready to learn. “The area lends itself to children walking and that encourages a community feel as people meet along the way. It’s much easier nowadays to reach Ogbourne Downs Golf Club just three miles south of Swindon which is a superb location for both golfers and nature lovers.

Set in rolling chalk downland, the course is hardly ever closed during the winter and offers some memorable challenges, such as trying to drive from the top of the course onto a green deep in a valley surrounded by rough which, in the Spring, is a profusion of flowers.

Help ChildLine in your sleep The BT Giant Sleepover in June will give youngsters the perfect excuse not to go to bed and break a world record at the same time.

Children across the country will be camping out in school halls and scout huts to raise money for children’s charities like Childline. Last year, a record breaking 33,093 children worldwide took part and the organisers are aiming for 50,000 sleepyheads on 16/17 June.

During the evening many groups organise games, pillow fights or midnight feasts before finally getting their heads down. To qualify for a world record, the rules state that children must have their lights out for at least 7 hours and must not sleep in their own bed.

Participation is through their schools and youth organisations like Guides and Scouts and the Boys Brigade. In addition to sleepovers in Britain, children in America, Australia and India are expected to join in.

New youth project starts in West Swindon (North) West Swindon Youth Worker Huw Solley has launched the Sparcells Youth Centre on Sparcells Drive with two initiatives to involve young people in the area: Tuesday night Adventure Service Challenge for 10 to 13 year olds, 6.30pm to 8.30pm Youngsters will be involved in decorating the building on Sparcells Drive and taking part in leisure and sports activities, cookery, sessions on moral values, first aid and service in the community. They will also make plans to go camping and take part in expeditions.

Peatmoor Primary gets Eco green light The ECO Schools Award Green Flag will soon be flying over Peatmoor, the second school in Swindon to achieve the eco status by showing a serious commitment to environmental awareness and action.

Award for battling youth worker

Gig gives something back to SOL

A voluntary youth worker who has fought to keep Toothill Junior Youth Club alive received the High Sheriff for Wiltshire’s award for commitment to the community in early March.

Making the presentation to Mavis Read, Sheriff Geraldine Wimble said the work of volunteers is greatly underrated by government at national and local level and congratulated her for the time and effort she gives to keep an essential facility going.

Marching band recruiting Swindon’s Bluebelle Drum Majorettes have again been selected to compete in the European Open Band Championships in July.

After their bronze medal last year, they’re aiming higher and need brass players to boost the band.

Experienced players are being sought for this season but there are instruments available for beginners to prepare for next year. As well as brass, the band includes snare and base drums, cymbals and bell lyres and there are vacancies. Girls and boys aged between 8 and 15 are welcome to join the band or the troupe.

Training takes place on Fridays 7pm to 9pm in West Swindon and band practice is every other Saturday morning.

Senior Trainer, Christine Doyle, was a founder member of the troupe which has 44 members. She enjoyed being a majorette as a girl and wanted youngsters to have the same opportunities.

“It’s a fantastic chance to learn new skills, meet lots of people, travel around and keep fit while having fun as part of a team,” she said. “It really develops their confidence, gives them lots of socialising skills and it keeps them out of trouble. They become so close and support each other.”

Swindon Council have a system for collecting dog mess, it’s trying hard to tackle graffiti, but its litter picking performance is woeful.

There are too few litter bins around and not enough staff emptying them or picking litter up. It’s a thankless task and a complete waste of taxpayers’ money. But without action to remove litter the community would become a rubbish tip.

Still a few places at the Great Escape Beat boredom in the Easter break at Greendown School in Grange Park by taking part in a sports week run by an experienced PE teacher and responsible leaders.

It will be based around team sports and learning through competition. Children aged 9 to 13 will take part in sports such as football, netball, hockey, tennis, badminton, volleyball, gymnastics, rounders, cricket, athletics, dance, Danish long ball and tug of war.

The course runs from 2 to 6 April, 9.30am to 3pm and costs £55.

Swindon’s Sub Aqua Club has come a long way since the days when members wore woolly jumpers to keep warm underwater.

Celebrating its 50th anniversary this month, the club now boasts an impressive array of equipment, and has plans to build a new club house at South Marston.

Founder member, John Hamilton, called the first official meeting of the club at Milton Road Baths in April 1957. After a few months of training, enough members qualified as 3rd Class Divers to officially form the branch and by the end of 1957, there were 37 members.

John is proud to have achieved his vision of a strong branch in Swindon, seventy miles from the nearest coastline.

There are currently 60 members regularly diving at locations such as Stoney Cove, Lyme Regis and Plymouth. They are buying land at Swindon Supermarine to build a new club house which they hope will include a training pool.

“It’s quite another world away from telephones and other distractions,” said John. “There’s so much to see, especially round Cornwall where there are hundreds of wrecks.”

Bonnie becomes ballet school patron Talented all rounder, Bonnie Langford, is the new patron of Tanwood School for Performing Arts, and is sure to provide inspiration to a new generation of youngsters.

After the death of Moira Shearer, Tanwood’s patron for many years, Head of Teaching, Pollyann Tanner, contacted her old friend Bonnie to see if she would step into the role. “Much to our delight, she accepted and so in January we took a coach of Tanwood pupils to see her in Guys and Dolls in Birmingham.”

They met in the VIP suite at the theatre after the show and Bonnie spent an hour chatting to everyone.

Tanwood, the town’s oldest dance school is opening a new branch in Lydiard Millicent village hall, offering ballet, tap, modern and baby classes on Fridays.

On Saturday mornings there will be performing arts training in jazz, musical theatre and drama.

Classes start on 20 and 21 April.
