Bid for a dinosaur to help Abby's fund A six year old from Haydon Wick is donating an unusual prize to help the Abby Smith Appeal.

Rachel Carter won a monster fibreglass dinosaur in a competition run

by Asda Walmart during half term.

It's one of six in the UK made for Asda.

But being a bit large for her bedroom,

Rachel and her mum Pat decided that the model should be donated to the appeal which is raising money for Swindon children's cancer charity CALM and the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford.

Abby Smith died aged three from a brain tumour last July. A fund-raising evening organised by her mother Helen in the HTS conference centre at Lydiard House on 27 June, with live music and a grand auction, will celebrate her life and thank those who have helped the family.

A wide range of items have been donated for auction, including a signed snooker cue from Stephen Hendrey and a mini-cricket bat signed by former PM John Major.

Abby's cancer was diagnosed. She said, "I prefer my soft monkey when I go to bed. Ihope the dinosaur will raise a lot of money for Abby."

Helen said, "I was touched that Rachel thought of the appeal; my focus now is to help families who find their life falls to pieces when their child is diagnosed with a life-threatening disease."

Whose town centre?

The March Link featured two pages on the changing horizon for Swindon's town centre. Martha Parry, former resident of Toothill and Freshbrook, and well known campaigner to save the Mechanics' Institute, reflects upon why all Swindon's citizens should be involved in these changes.

I remember how relieved we were in Toothill when the West Swindon District Centre opened in 1981, including a Carrefour superstore. As the Link Centre, Shaw Ridge and the Health Centre followed, the area had pretty much everything a young family needed.

I never missed the weekly struggle to town with a pram and two babes, there and back on foot.

Many across suburban Swindon will have had similar experiences.

It has been the same story during Swindon's history over the last 160 years - a hard slog for women trying to establish a family framework in an ever-expanding environment, let alone those expecting to find childcare to back them up if they went out to work to pay the mortgage. The shops were never there before the shoppers.

However as my family grew up, I came to realize the importance of a town centre that met the needs of teenagers with expanding horizons. By the time we moved into the town centre, my boys didn't even have a cinema to attract them. They commuted to hang out with mates in West Swindon. Not until they were 18 could they find anything to do in the town centre.

Thinking back on my own youth, I recall how crucial it was to take that first step into a new environment that challenged me to continue to grow beyond the perspective of childhood.

So, if you live in an all-shopping, all-teaching, all-cosy modern suburb, why should you care what a renewed town centre offers? Because life is a series of cycles, each with its own challenges and needs, and opportunities for growth. And we can all hope to benefit from a wider range of opportunities just a bus-ride away, whenever we want a change.

Our own town centre should provide a refreshing day-out, no matter which side of Swindon we live in, and no matter what our age group.

Shopping aside, more specialised educational and cultural opportunities can deepen our satisfaction with the lives we live in Swindon; not just for our children,

The children and staff of the school welcomed us very warmly and we were involved in working with the teachers in various classroom activities. These included a design and technology project and a sharing of playground songs and games.

We also took the opportunity to stay overnight with some of the parents of the children in the local township and visited other schools in the area.

At all times we were made to feel like honoured guests and the response of the children was an inspiration. The building of the new classrooms is progressing well and has now reached the stage of having the roof put on. It should be available for use after Easter, a lovely thought considering that the

Library to become centre of North community

The February edition of The Link, featured a Red Army map of Swindon, now in the hands of the Reference Library in Regent Circus.

The item has generated a great deal of attention and has been picked up by several other media organisations. Locally, the story was carried by the Evening Advertiser, North Wilts Herald and the Western Daily Press, as well as London's free paper Metro.

Reference librarian Roger Trayhurn was interviewed by BBC Radio Swindon and Steve Wright featured the map on Radio 2.

The whole of Britain is covered by similar maps and most are held in archives across the country. Swindon seems to be alone in revealing their existence, thanks to The

It's been a long time coming - over a year since completion - but North Swindon's new library is almost ready to receive some 32,000 books, tapes, videos, DVD and playstation games. And Shaun Smith, the person responsible for leading the team who will get the items on display, says the excitement is building towards the opening day in mid to late May. Shaun has been with Swindon Council's library service for eighteen months as group manager for eight libraries north of the railway line and the two mobile libraries.

space, right next to the public thoroughfare, and the library service will be trying out a range of new ideas for the town. For a start we're going to open on Sundays between noon and 4pm.

There will be separate areas for young children and for teenagers with books and magazines and hopefully a listening area where CDs can be heard through earphones.

"For adults we're also designing a read and relax area complete with coffee machine where people can come in, spend time reading and browsing and not feel they have to rush onto the next activity.

"There will be 22 People's Network computer terminals around the library offering free e-mail and internet access, and Swindon College will be running a large IT training suite in an adjacent area.

We will also have a meeting room available for hire to local organisations."

Shaun is conscious that with a large video hire store opposite and a major US book retailer with a coffee bar, opening close-by, the library needs to offer something complimentary. "The idea that the library is a place of silence has long disappeared. With seventy per cent of the population in the immediate area under 44 years old, the library will be directly catering for customer needs. It's very exciting to be involved with a central and vital part of the community, and it's a free service"

Interviews for 25 part and full ti me staff took place throughout March ready for stocking shelves and arranging displays in April.

Teenagers get their own book award A pioneering project has been launched giving teenagers the chance to award their favourite author the accolade of Swindon Fantastic Fiction Award.

Anyone aged 13 to 19 years has until 31 May to nominate an author they reckon has written the bestbookin the last five years via a new web site.

All you have to do is submit a short review explaining why the book should get the award.

Shortlisted books will be discussed by groups of teenagers at libraries across Swindon during the Autumn. The top books will be chosen via an online vote and the winning author will be asked to attend a Fantastic Fiction presentation in December.

He said, "I feel honoured that the LEA has identified Greendown as the high achieving school within the cluster and also by the welcome we have had from the other headteachers who will be involved.

"The best practice from each school within the cluster will be shared with other schools across the borough. This will be done through meetings between teachers, visits by teachers to schools to observe and learn from each other, as well as training and development sessions on good practice."

He added that involvement in the excellence cluster was an incentive for Greendown to continually examine good practice and drive for higher standards.

The extra funding will be spent on improving the management of information sharing, materials to boost high quality teaching, such as schemes to develop the abilities of gifted and talented children.

Girls invited to join the Boy Scouts in West Swindon

Toothill's Scouts have welcomed the first girls into its cub pack and they hope more will join in the future.

After a period of declining numbers, and a change in national policy towards recruiting girls, the cubs and scouts were sent out on a recruiting mission to make other boys and girls aware of the attractions of the scouting movement.

Jasmine Telling and Sara Houston were immediately interested when a member of the Toothill Orion pack told their class at Salt Way School about the weekly activities and camps in the summer holidays.

Recently released, Al Bridges. Sam Bates & John Sco tt of the Carter Affair Former Greendown students Alex Bridges from Grange Park and Sam Bates from Freshbrook have set up San Blew Records to produce sampler discs to showcase local performers.

Alex has released two solo albums of his own material and Sam's band The Carter Affair have just completed a second CD. "There are hundreds of people around Swindon in bands or performing individually who want to get their songs in front of an audience," said Alex. "San Blew is a

way of bringing together local talent and getting it heard."

Sam explained that with home studio and mixing equipment. and CD burners, recording costs are much more accessible to all. However performers find it more difficult to market and distribute their work. "We're not looking for a specific type of music: if it's original, we want to hear from you."

For the tenth time in ten years, we move into May

celebrating literature!

And coming to town to help in this celebration of words at

work and play is a terri fi c line up of authors.These include prizewinning novelists and poets, storytellers, philosophers, diarists, columnists, activists, comics, performers, and

mischief-makers too.We even have the story of ping-pong, the language of tennis, and a phenomenally friendly circus!

To get it all in, we have had to make this the longest Festival yet: 17 days! It begins with fun and the rising sun, at dawn on that high ridge overlooking the town in Lawn Woods on May Day morning. And is followed by sixteen

days of literary treats for every age and taste, in one long celebration of things well written and things well said.

Each day there will be three or more events, at midday, teatime, and in the evening, carefully spaced and placed, to enable you to attend almost every event, should you have the stamina!

Swindon Wide Mini-Eden Project set to open Beautiful butterflies fluttering across lily ponds to feed on spectacular tropical flowers and screeching exotic birds swooping from tree to tree in steamy temperatures will be the scene visitors experience when a new butterfly farm opens next to the Studley Grange Craft Centre, Hay Lane, off M4 junction 16.

It will be reached through the craft centre opened in August with over twenty shop units where crafts people display their wares and continue working as visitors watch.

They include dried and silk flower arrangements, plaster cast figurines, unique greeting cards, textile designers and fine artists. In the middle is an indoor play area with giant ball pond for all ages.

Owner Tony Miller said the craft centre had been extremely successful and he believes the butterfly farm will add another significant tourist attraction to the area. "We've

been very pleased with the way the craft centre has been received and has had visitors from all over the region. The butterfly farm at 6,000 square feet is one of the larger ones in the country. Later in the year the project will go into a third phase when we hope to open an otter sanctuary where injured otters can be cared for and endangered species bred."

Balloons return to Lydiard Park Over forty giant balloons will be on show over three days at the end of May when a round of the UK Ballooning Grand Prix takes place.

The majority will be entering a competition to select balloon teams to represent Britain at the world championships in Australia in 2004 and they will take off early every 1 morning to catch the best conditions.

Anyone can send in a nomination, but they should first obtain the permission of the teenager, and also that of a parent or guardian.

The closing date for entries is 11 April. Shortlisted people will be interviewed during May and the winner announced by mid-June.

The winner will receive a certificate, a cheque for £50 and a cheque of £50 for their chosen charity.

Doing something about skateboarding The March Linkfeatured an article by Shaun Zerebecki from Freshbrook on Swindon's lack of skateboard facilities. Maureen Dilley, Swindon Council cabinet lead member for Swindon Services, responds.

Shaun's article highlighted an issue shared by not only youngsters across Swindon but also countrywide.

Prior to Christmas 2001 Swindon councillors were very much aware of the increasing popularity of skateboarding amongst youngsters and the ongoing request for facilities to be provided.

As a result members of the council requested that officers submit a report that outlined the issues that members should consider. The report entitled 'Provision of Skateboarding facilities in Swindon' cov-

Hunt for Easter Eggs in the litter The Friends of Peatmoor Lagoon are organising the annual Easter Egg hunt and litter-clearing session around Peatmoor Lagoon on the morning of Easter Monday, 21 April.

Police points nearly ready New sub-police stations to serve West and North Swindon should be up and running within a few weeks.

The police took over the lease on the old Link Surgery from Dr Rod Houseman's estate, following his sudden death in March 2001 and contractors have been working on the building since mid-February.

The police offices in North Swindon will be located in the community building at the North Swindon District Centre, next to the library.

Both stations will be a point where sector police officers will be able to meet people during their enquiries or hold meetings with local groups.

Public access times have yet to be established but the official opening has been set for the end of June.

The scheme was launched last year by Lynn Forrester, right, the borough's Local Agenda 21 Coordinator, with the aim of recognising individuals, organisations and businesses who have helped improve Swindon's environment.

Eighteen entries have been re-

ceived for the award in the business and community categories.

These include projects by businesses to reduce waste, children's environmental activities, a fruit in schools scheme, running a community healthy eating group, developing a wildlife garden, promoting recycling in schools and a project to eliminate prostitution in the town centre.

This year's awards have been

sponsored by Swindon-based Cellular Operations and Blick International. In addition to the trophy, a cash prize is on offer for the winning community-based project and free sponsorship of next year's awards for the business category winner.

Watch out for footpath dangers From Mark Harbour, Squires Copse, Peatmoor On Sunday 2 March my wife Sharon and I walked to the

newsagents at the Peatmoor centre via the footpath from Swinley Drive past Squires Copse. It has a drainage ditch next to it and for sometime the footpath has been rutted by subsidence. We again commented about its disgraceful disrepair and also discussed the impending 15% council tax increase which will mean paying well over £1,000 per annum.

We mused that someone would fall and injure themselves on the footpath and, irrespective of how much council tax we pay, private areas seem always to be a low priority when divvying up the council's budget.

After lunch we went for a walk with Sharon's mother Dorothy Jesson to Peatmoor lagoon to feed the ducks and admire the litter.

How ironic then that, walking down the same footpath Dorothy went sprawling across the footpath. Talk about deja-vu!

She was severely shaken and distressed and took some minutes to regain her senses and dignity. My feelings rapidly turned from concern to blazing fury; we could not believe what we had just witnessed, within hours of our earlier conversation.

Dorothy sustained two deep grazes to her right kneecap, bruising to her right thigh and a severely swollen sprained ankle. A trip to the GW Hospital confirmed that nothing was broken.

On returning home I contacted local councillor Douglas Stewart who said a Swindon's Highways Department officer had visited the footpath several months previously and had agreed that it needed attention. Sadly this has been either ignored or forgotten.

As a result of the revelations

from coon Stewart we have reluctantly taken steps towards legal action, not because we want to join the litigious band wagon, but because we feel strongly that ordinary people are being ignored and our money is wasted by a council who appears to have a complacent, blase, unaccountable 'not my job' attitude about their positions and the work they do, or not, as the case may be.

Mrs Jesson did not deliberately dive onto the tarmac and certainly did not want to make a fuss; at sixty years of age who can blame her? But all too often that resigned attitude gives the green light for large institutions like central and local governments as well as commercial interests to get away with almost anything. This council ought to deal with the real issues that ruin our quality of life: the poor state of the footpath, the litter problem around the Peatmoor shops and all over West Swindon.

These issues may be small compared to world events but they do have a major effect on the community's well-being. It is a great pity that our council does not have a sense of urgency about sorting out the problems around us.

This was reflected during Fairtrade Fortnight in Swindon during early March in a variety of events in the town which included a visit by a banana grower to a Ridgeway School assembly.

Students gave rapt attention to a talk by Denise Sutherland, a banana grower from the Winward Islands. She explained how the actions of consumers in the West have a direct effect on farmers in poor countries, not only in providing a personal income, but also in supporting health and social services from income to local cooperatives.

Swindon Agenda 21 officer Lyn Forrester said, "the students were fascinated listening to someone who produces food thousands of

miles a way. Denise's talk about the conditions she and other islanders experience had a great impact on their awareness."

She added that she was impressed that a talk about Fairtrade at New College attracted over eighty students and pleased that Sainsburys were now running special promotions for Fairtrade goods.

"There is definitely a lot more general awareness of Fairtrade in Swindon; people are much more concerned about where their food comes from."

The Fairtrade fortnight programme was funded by a grant from the Oxford, Swindon & Gloucester Co-op.
