Electronic messages could keep streets cleaner Thamesdown Council cleaning chiefs have come up with a hi-tech way of reducing the street cleansingbil whilst raising some cash for their hard pressed service. For years, birthday greetings on posters and banners inpublicplaces put up by West Swindon residents in the early hours has caused the cleansing department aggravation because of the extra manpower required to dismantle the displays. Now they've come up with an innovative and clean way of allowing people to get their message across to their friends. Working with a new Swindon company DupeCommunications', the Council is to start trial testing a number of electronic notice boards located at strategic roundabouts around the town. These will flash out birthday greetings or other friendly messages to drivers.
Confirming that the trials will start on 1st April, a spokesman for the Council said, "Thamesdown is well known for its innovation and
partnership with business; wewelcomed the opportunity of promoting a new product from Swindon. "We have two objectives in this year long trial. We want to encourage community spirit by helping people communicate in a public way to their friends and loved ones they've been doing this for years with the banners. And at the same time, we want to see if we can reduce the cost of removing these home made displays of friendship. "The low cost of sending a message willwe hope turn people away from DIY sign boards and earn some cash which will be returned to make the streets cleaner. "The type of message displayed will of course be strictly monitored but I imagine there will be some interesting ones. It will be like Valentine's day throughout the year." -

Youth to benefit from Ricky's trust A trust fund for West Swindon's youth is being set up in memory of the area's longest serving councillor Ricky Midwinter, who died of cancer in February. Colleague councillor Sue Bates said, "Ricky was always concerned thatyoungpeoplein the area didn't get a fair of crack of the whip and were often mis-represented in the local media." She added that the details of the trust fund were being worked out and a public meeting was being considered where Ricky's friends could express their appreciation for his work in the community. Anyone who wants to make a donation to the 'Ricky Midwinter Memorial Trust Fund' can make their contributions at the Cheltenham and Gloucester building society, account no K37580/4.
