WHY TOOTELL? Iviany people have wondered where the name came from - something to do with trains perhaps?

But,., a Toothill iq a natural or artificial piece of hi'h ground from which the surrounding countryside can be seen. The pronounciation was oftentuthill' and in this form looks like the Welsh,'twthill'. In London Tothill Street took its name from the toothill in Tootehill Fields. It was called the Tooehill or Totehill as far back as the thirteenth century, A n old name for a watchman was a 'tootere' and toothill was a name for a watchtower. Other words which have a similar meaning are the Welsh 'twt' or Ttwy-tI (a spring or rising),'totian' (Old English for projection),'toten'(to peep) and 'tout' (to look about). This latter form is better known to us as a ticket tout or one touting for custom!

Even in the Wycliffe translation of the Bible toothill' aDpears several times For instance Isiah 21,verse 5 "Prepare the table, watch in a watchtower" is translated as "Sett the bord, behold in a toothill" There are a number of hamlets in England named Toothill. London has its Tooting, Somerset has a long barrow called the Fairy Toot, to the north of Peterborough Cathedral there is an earthen mound called Toothill and in Herefordshire there is a Norman castle called,,Toothill Our Toothill is an ancient site. It was occupied in the time of the early Britons and diggings in this area have produced a remarkable number of RomanBritish pottery Kilns shaped rather like boats Something to do with trains indeed!!! *X

?1T IS IT? After months of asking this question,. everybody now knows that the building on the corner of Dunwich Drive and Flint Hill is a church. The opening and dedication on November 25th. was well attended and was a great success.

But what sort of church is it and who is it for? Unlike most traditional churches it will not be for just one denomination - it will be the one church for all Christian people on the Toothill Estate,and it will be called simply TOOTEILL CHURCH. Some time ago it was agreed by all the main churches in Swindon that in new areas no denomination should build churches of their own, but thht all the denominations should support shared churches, The TOOThILL CHURCH is being built by the Methodists, but will be shared by and run jointly by Methodists,Church of England Baptists, United Reform Church and Roman Catholics. There will have to be a separate Roman Catholic Mass which will probably be celebrated at 4pm on Sunday afternoons,,but apart from this all seiices will be for everybody, and there will be one united congregation. So TOOTRILL CHURCH will be the one church for everybody and the Christian centre for people of all denominations and none.

Our: lay-worker, Miss Olive King has been working on Toothill since the first Z. houses were occupied, and she is supported by the Vicar, Canon Jim Fee; the Methodist Superintendant Rev, KenCrossland; Baptist Minister from Swindon Central Church ,Rev, Ruth iatÂąhews;and the Roman Catholic Rev.'. David Ryan.

To begin with the services will be at 10.30a,m. and 6p.m. Future times and the future Drogramrte of the church will be arranged according to the wishes and needs of the peorle.

We want TOOTHILL CHURCH to be the centre of Christian witness and to serve everybody, and we hope that it will be an integral part of the community and help to make Toothill a good place to live, KEN ROSSLUD *

PLAYGROUPS BodiWn Drive Playgroup This playgroup has been transferred from the Community Hut to the Farmhouse on Bodium Drive. WE TLEA DOWN About a month ago, Thamesdown Council and E.H.Bradley & Sons Ltd. presented a.. 'master plan' to Wiltshire County Council for the development of a massive 570 acre site adjoining Toothill. The County have since approved the plan and "WESTLEA DOWN" overnight became more than just a pipe-dream.As this development will affect all of us in one way or another, here's a brief summary of the proposals contained in the master plan.

HOUSIN has been allocated 266 acres(as a rough guide, an acre is about the size of a football pitch). Three private companies, Bradleys, Barratts & Costains will be building a wide range of housetypes from one bedroom bachelor fiats to four bedroom houses, whilst Thamesdown Borough Council will provide council accommodation. An extra 11,000 people are expected to occupy these houses.

EDUCATION: To cope with the expected demand from the increased population, sites totalling 44 acres have been allocated for several primary and one secondary school.

INDUSTRY has been allocated 71 acres of land providing over a million sqire feet of space for warehouses, factories and offiĂ´es. Several national companies have already shown an interest in expansion in this area and it is anticipated that the first factory units will be let and occupied during 1980.

LEISURE Two public houses have been proposed and 87 acres have been allocated to woodland and designated public open space. Two community centres are also included in future plans.

In addition and perhaps most important, a major 'district centre' is planned on a 25 acre site, which will include shops offices, community buildings, health services and other public facilities which are sadly lacking at present.

The first stages of this development will involve the laying out and construction of roads and drains.

As soon as these are in, tree-planting and landscaping is programmed to follow in conjunction with house building, shopping, social facilities and job opportunities.

So that, very briefly , is Westlea Down.

++A word about Bradleys++ Whilst most of us know about the activities of Thamesdown Borough Council, where they are and what they do, Bradley's sphere of operation may not be quite so well known so E.H.Bradley and Sons have been established. in Swindon for about 90 years, In total they employ about 1,600 people in this area.

As well as building houses they specialise in the manufacture of building materials and are the major suppliers of the U.K's total national requirements.

Bradley Engineering is involved in commercial vehicle fabrication, light engineering and operates the area franchise for Chrysler U.K.Ltd. In addition, the Group's Planning Services provide ian extensive land use and development consultancy service to countless companies from all over the United Kingdom and abroad.

Swindon & Crick lade Railway Society In many parts of the country, successful schemes have been launched by railway enthusiasts to save or restore branch railway lines, which have proved viable and also assets to the area.

It has always seemed a pity to many of us in the Swindon area that there is no preservation scheme in the vicinity of the town, despite its long associations with railways So this Society has been formed to restore the old railway line from Moredon to cJricklade,abot.t a 5 mile stretch When the track has been restored, it is hoped that steam hauled passenger trains will operate in North Wiltshire once again. Much needs to be done, but we hope that voluntary labour and the necessary financial support will be forthcoming IDIATh1Y we need more members, so why not get involved? The club fields four tea-s each week generally in friendly games. The first team however are entered in the D--benhams .7 7est Hockey League. TOOTLL YOUTH CLUB CTI?LL TEAM The beginning of the 1978/79 football season saw the birth of the youth club team.

With handed-down shirts and two balls (the boys sun-plying their own socks &. shorts) 'we set off. With very little support we lost the first game against MOORS MUTED. It was at this game that we realised the size of the boys we were up against However we were misled. There were big4er lads to come and unfortunately heavier losses for our little lads BUT despite this, we still have a full team turning up each week.

By not giving up until the final whistle we've managed to score a few goals late into the second. half.

We hope finances willing, to purchase a complete new strip for next season.

LEISURE THE RUNNING HORSE PUBLIC HOUSE Until Wes-tlea Down brings us a pub of our own, the Running Horse must rank as the'local' for most of us. Harold and Barbara Foote are 'mine host' and preside over the pub's many activities.

For those of youwho like darts, there are two teams, both in the Arkell League; the 'A' team is captained by Jeff Rutter and the 'B' team by Keith Eckersly. Unforti'ately, neither team has been too successful so far this year, but there's still along way to go before the end of the season Beside the league games, there are a number of competitions open to allcorners, the latest being won by Steve' Evans, who was also the pub's representative in the preliminary rounds of the 'News of the World' national darts championship. In spite of all this activity though, you can always just come along and be sure of getting a friendly game.

The football team, mrged by Dave Warren, has had its fair measure of success over the years and looks set to continue its good record this season,whilst the cribbage team has remained virtually unbeatable over the past few seasons.

Other events take place from time to time —the Annual Flower Show for instance, again open to ailcomers, is held each autumn and always attracts a sizeable crowd in addition, a few weeks ago a tug of war took place between the more muscular members of the Running Horse regulars and atearn from the Sally Pussey. The 'pull' was across the river and resulted in the unfortunate visitors taking an early bath A return pull has been arranged for the near future.

If you prefer more 'unusual'forms of entertainment, a'drag' football match looks likely to take place at Xmas.... an event definitely not to be missed,.

On the other hand, if all of this sonnds a bit too active, you can simply have a quiet drink in the newly decorated lounge, or listen to the juke-box in the public (where there's a fruit machine which pays out regularly), COME ALOm_-YOU' LL ENJOY YOURSELF

BOOZE Hot spiced Cider punch, Ingredients;

2pints Cider 4oz, Sugar 12 cloves 4 sticks Cinnamon 8 whole allspice (Makes about 22pints)

Method; Simply put all the ingredients into a saucepan and heat until the sugar has dissolved. Strain and Serve Hot. *****x x x*******************x xx x*******

POLITICAL REPRESENTATION Councillor A. J. Masters, 9 Cherry Tree Grove, Swindon, (Tel: 25768) and Councillor S. H. Macpherson, 358 Marlborough Road, Swindon (Tel: 22439) have agreed to act as representatives for the area on the Thamesdown Borough Council until such time as the boundary adjustment takes place-. The normal procedure is for problems to be raised in the first instance with the appropriate officers of Thameadown Borough CounciI and to be addressed to Members if satisfaction is not obtained.

Toothill Education Action Group s As many of you may know, this group has formed in response to the problems we see arising from children being bussed to schools on the other side of Swindon. As far as we can find out, there are no plans for junior school provision in Toothill. This means we may have to wait for anything from 3 years upwards - no dates are set.

A letter has been sent to the County Council to ask what will be the admissions policy for the Church Aided School when it is complete, but we are fairly sure it won't include jimiors If you are worried about this situation, contact any of the names below, and they will tell you how you can help. The County Education Councillors are visiting Toothill in mid- January, and we hope by then that everyone will have bright &.gaudy stickers in their windows to let them know how we feel. If you can help us distribute these - get in touch ;e are also trying to do a survey (in spite of the weather) - so please give us your help if we arrive on your doorstep.

The winner of the 'Name Toothill's Community Paper' Competition is Malcolm Patrick of 3 Luddesdown Rd Toothill. Malcolm who is 12 thought that because the paper was being written by people in Toothill for others who live here it would be a good LINK between residents. Hence the christening of TOOTHILL LINK. Long may it publish and be a service to the people who inhabit Toothill.

Malcolm who has just been joined in the Patrick family by a baby brother, goes to Richard Jefferies School. He likes living on Toothill and finds the bus trip to school all right.

His biggest moan is about the lack of flat playspace where he and his mates can play football. Malcolm goes to see Swindon Town play quite often, but Manchester United is the main team he supports where his favourite player is Steve Coppell.

Malcolm's prize for winning the competition is a record token. A runner up prize was awarded to Linda Toomer aged 10 of Markenfield

MONEY PROBLEMS ALREADY (The Link in Crisis) Greetings. This is the second edition of Toothill's own paper - written and produced by residents for residents. The first effort the Christmas number which most of you will have received in January, was well received by the numbers of letters and comments passed about it. Hopefully this one will have information and views which you might find interesting or useful.

This edition is a bit unexciting we must admit.

Unfortunately there is a limit on what can be done with very little MONEY. The first edition was printed free; we have had a grant from the Hambro Life Staff Fund to cover us on this one.

The paper will be produced and distributed by volunteers and it will be free to all.

This is because we want everybody to see it if possible (and collecting 5p a copy would be a hassle). BUT if you feel you can help financially with small donations they will be very welcome.

TOOTHILL "MOANS AND GROANS" 0

During the recent cold spell and the subsequent thaw, a number of complaints regarding the conditions around Toothill, both inside and outside your homes, have become more important. The following represert the major "MOANS AND GROANS" HEATING: Firstly indoors.., scores of complaints regarding the heating system.

The thermostats have a habit of breaking; the pilot lights go out and then the ignition system seems not to want to rectify the situation. For new tenants and the elderly this can result in undue worry, SO why not have a full set of "What to do" instructions available on entry Thamesdown? Lastly on heating we have received a number of queries as to why radiators are not provided in bedrooms, when they often are fitted in halls immediately adjacent to front doors. Any answers?

SERVICES: Apart from long standing complaints by residents as to lack of information from Thamesdown on the timetable for erection of pubs, district/ community centres and the like, Christmas time has regenerated the complaints regarding insufficient postal and telephone facilities on Toothill - the mini post box and the frequently out of order telephone box, miles from a half of Toothill residents. Can we expect more in the near future? If so, when?

ROADS: In the recent weather, glaciers would be a better description But given the nationwide gritting problems could we expect more? However, the mud on the roads could surely be cleared? Similarly is it necessary for road surfaces to remain in their present appalling state? Street lighting and road signs are also respectively inadequate and confusing especially for the elderly.

Finally, why must our 'youngâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;mums' walking into town risk life and limb in crossing the Toothill roundabout. Can we expect a proper walkway or do we wait until an accident occurs?

WAITING ON THE STREET BEFORE SCHOOL OPENS

I have been wondering whether there is a need, amongst parents who take their children to Toothill Infants School, for a place to go which is dry and warm, before the school opens.

For example a Mum with a junior and

an infant who lives some way from the bus stop, may have to take the junior to the bus stop at 8.20 am but finds it not worth the trouble of going home because she has to take the young one to Toothill Infants School for 8.50. This means that she has to hang about waiting near the school, unpleasant for her especially in the recent weather.

I would be interested in people who would be willing to run a Coffee Morning in the Community Room at Toothill Infants School where parents and children can wait in a warm, dry and sociable atmosphere. It could be a number of people taking on responsibility for different mornings of the week. All it would entail would be for somebody to go to the Room a little earlier than the others to boil up the kettle, to collect Sp for the cups of coffee and leave the place tidy for the next group to use at 9.00 am.

The Community Room is run separately from the school for the use of any groups of people from Toothill. If anybody is interested in early morning coffee before school please contact me Roger Ogle Community Development office at Toothill Farmhouse, Bodiam Drive or ring 26161 Ext. 454 (Swindon).

Help can be arranged for students, either in small class groups or 1-1 in people's homes.

AN OPEN LETTER TO THE RESIDENTS OF TOOTHILL Elsewhere in this magazine you will see a list of moans and groans concerning Toothill and its immediate environs It would be We to assume that the majority of Toothill residents if not all - would endorse at least one of those complaints, relating, as they do, to the facilities (or lack of them) that we all share.

The question is - how does a resident, whether tenant or owrer—oc oupier, get his or her grievance raised in the most effective way and with the right people in order to dl 'tWL stand most chance of having the grievance rectified?

The answer can be very difficult to determine because of the very complex situation on foothill which is within the areas of North Wilts District Council and the Lydiard Tregose Parish Council. However Thainesdown Borough Council provides services such as refuse clearance on an agency basis. Thainesdown council also has a presence on the estate as a developer together with Mcleans, Wilcon and other builders.

It seems fairly obvious, then, that it would be extremely beneficial if there existed one organisation to which residents could go for help and advice and which in turn would actively represent the interests of the residents as a whole. The question that then immediately springs to mind is what type of organisation would best suit our requirements?

Probably the best known type of organisation are Tenants or Ratepayers Associa— tions which primarily represent tenants (council or private) and owner—occupiers respectively. A third type is the Community Association which represents both types of resident and like the first two levies a subscription for membership.

More recently a fourth alternative has developed and is known as a Community Council. This organisation represents residents in a particular area and accepts affiliation from all local voluntary groups, charitable institutions etc. There is no membership fee or subscription and all residents are automatically members.

Any funds required are raised by social activities.

A group of residents have been discussing the alternatives and the purpose of this letter is to invite anyone who is interested (and lives on Toothill) to the community hut next to the shop/post office on Monday 5th March at 7.30 pm.

The aim will be to form a steering committee which it is hoped will be able to put a concrete proposal to a meeting of all residents in the very near future.

Also there are already a number of classes at the school in the evenings. Some of the evening classes at the school are - painting, flower arrangements and yoga. going on is that the school has started a Parents Teachers and Friends Association.

I am the

secretary of this association and if this is O.K. I should like to write a little bit about our next plans, or perhaps you would give us an interview of some kind.

I only received your copy of the Toothill ?..? last evening and am very impressed. Could you have a page for teenagers, also younger members.

THE TOOTHILL COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT OFFICER The Community Development Officer appointed by Thamesdown Borough Council, responsible for Toothill, Freshbrook and Whitehill is Roger Ogle.

He started the job on January 8th and has been finding out what it actually involves

since then.

Roger is 28 years old and comes to Toothill from an extended period of unemployment.

His last job was with a

London based charity called Task Force, in their Camden office for three years where he was mainly concerned with the needs of the elderly people.

Most of his time was spent visiting them and working with volunteers willing to

visit those who were lonely or socially isolated.

Roger also worked with a pensioners Trade Union which saw as

its job the need to pressurize the Government for a higher pension and the local council for better services to the elderly.

The Community Development job in Thamesdown's Western expansion area is an enormous one, according to Roger, "I didn't realize the huge area which Toothill, Freshbrook and Whitehill covers 'on the ground'.

Also it is

very difficult to imagine what the 25,000 people who will live here looks like ; especially when nobody was here three and a half years ago."

"What attracts me to this job is the fact that there is an open book as far as a community here is concerned Whatever happens whether it be social, cultural or political has to emerge from the efforts of the people who have come to live here."

Roger is very positive about the possibilities for building community life in Toothill.

"It has started,

people are organising groups around different needs or issues such as the needs of young people or under 51 s; or the need to communicate views with the council.

My job is to encourage and support any people with ideas who want to find others and want to make them work.

Roger is also aware of his limitations.

SWINDON AND CRICKLADE RAILWAY SOCIETY Progress to date (Jan '79) has included the formation of a ltd. company subject to the wishes of the membership as a whole and fundraising through specific activities and through the Sales Dept. which sells books and other items.

Materials are being acquired and stored until they can be used on site and include all useable stonework from the abondoned Rushey Platt station and 2 ex G.W.R. railway vehicle bodies, a 45 foot family saloon and an 'Iron Mink' goods van.

The immediate plan is to construct a mile of track with associated works and buildings centered around Blunsdon station. As a result the River Ray bridge will be built linking Swindon and Cricklade; a station will be completed allowing access by the public.

SWINDON PHOENIX CAR CLUB Our next Calling all car enthusiasts Big event, the Shelisport "Highwayman Rally" takes place in March. The route is about 160 miles on OS sheets 173 & 174 starting from Spring Gardens Car Park and finishing at Blunsdon House Hotel - the first car leaves at 23.01 and is due to finish at 5 am Crews will be segregated into 4 classes, Masters, Experts, Clubmen and Novices and all corners are welcome. We also need marshalls for this event - no experience needed The club has lots of other interests, from Karting to Formula One racing, social film shows, dances, quiz nights and the like.

SWINDON TOWN HOCKEY CLUB Since the last time of writing, the Swindon Town Hockey Club hasn't played too many games, due to the bad weather.

However before the weather set in, we did play a few games.

We played 4 games it. the Debenham West Hockey League, winning 1, drawing 1, and losing 2.

We have also played 4 friendly games, winning 1, drawing 1 and losing 2.

Unfortunately the first team games haven't been going our way due to never being able to field. the same team on two consecutive occasions.

However, enough of the first team, and on a better note our second team have fared much better throughout the season.

So far this season, they have lost only 4 out of a total of approx. 20 games.

In fact, they have gone unbeaten since last October, when they lost to a very strong Old Tauntonians side from Southampton.

One of the best wins of the season was the only game to be played on the 20th Jan. against a strong Bracknell side.

The second team of both clubs were the only sides to play and the Brancknell side were reinforced by no less than 6 of their 1st team players.

However the Swindon 2nd team played extremely well and beat them 3 - 1, with goalkeeper Mike Wall having a very good game.

I hope that the first team can take a leaf out of the second team's book when it comes to sheer guts and determination and a never-say-die attitude.

Since the last time of writing for the Swindon indoor squad the team have played some fine games and some disappointing games.

Our most disappointing games were against Wootton Basset and North Wilts.

We were beaten in both games, 9-2 and 6-4 respectively, despite being 3-1 up at half time in the second game.

The first game was disappointing in that we were beaten by penalty corners and one Wootton Bassett player.

On the bright side results are P 10, W 5, D 2, L 2, goals F 46 A 40.

meeting of residents, interested Following the letter published in TOUI'HILI' LINK No.;,-', in forming a community organisation, took place in the community hut on March 5th.

It was agreed to form a steering committee to investigate all possible forms of organ -isation, with a view to putting concrete proposals before a meeting of all residents.

The steering committee has met a number of times since March 5th & although not yet ma position to finalise proposals, has agreed on the following;

1), A letter has been sent to the Directcr of Development & Housing, raising many of the problems facing Toothill residents & asking that Thamesdown Counci] represent -atives attend a meeting of residents on Toothill, in order to answer their questions,

2). After the question & answer session, the committee will be putting its proposals fcr the formation of a residents organisation to the meeting for discussions 7). The main principle of the organisation shall be that it will be open to ALL residents of Toothill, regardless of age, sex, race or political persuasion and that it will be independant of any authority, being answerable only to the residents of TOOTH I OL. ADULT EDUCATION IN TOUTHILL

e run a refuge for battered women. Approximately 150 women & 300 children come to us throughout the year. We welcome them any time day or night & try to offer a place of relative safety as well as advice & support. We're also there to help with queries on Social Security,re-housing, & custody or divorce if wanted. We arrange schooling for the children who've had to leave their home area & run a playgroup 5 mornings a week.

Here're some extracts from a letter from the Head of Adult Education studies at The College. The full letter will be published at a later date, when we've more space.',

The women often come to us mental & physical cruelty. often suffers, e.g. bricks door broken down & threats

having suffered much Even the refuge itself through windows, front & punches at workers.

The house itself is in a bad state of repair; it's large, draughty & very cold with no form of general heating - our electricity bills are ÂŁ600 a quarter. At present we receive no financial aid although we have received a Council grant in the past. The Council are providing new premises which we hope to move into during the summer. We have 4 workers under the Govt. sponsored Manpower Services Commission but their wages will end in November & we would like to provide continuity of workers. All this however needs money so.....

A Summer Playscheme "hat will we do with our children during the long summer holidays ?" -- A question often voiced by parents & perhaps, one you'll be wanting an answer to this July & August.

As Play Officer for the Borough of Thamesdown I have a specific responsibility to help to provide playchemes during the school holidays & I know that the best schemes are those in which parents have been involved in the planning & organisation So how will the question be answered in Toothill this summer?

Other areas of Swindon have their own play scheme committee which with the support of their Community Council & the Thainesdown Play Asso. organise & plan trips, events & activities on spare land or in clubrooms. Mums,Dads,friends in fact anyone available give what time they can. As time is short this year we may not manage to form a committee but we do want a playscheme or something for the children or do we?

Lots of questions & one or two suggestions,but one thing is certain, the children NILL be around during July August & they wILL want something to do.

If you drive along Bodiam Drive, you will discover an old Farm, unusual in Toothill where all the houses, the people and the community are brand new. From the road Toothill Farm looks derelict, and unkept but if you go into the Farmyard at certain times of the day, you'll find thinms happening. An active playgroup uses the Farmhouse Community Centre on five mornings and four afternoons a week, and in the evening a number of community groups, like the Carnival Committee, meet there. Across the yard Toothill Youth Club operates from the old barn which they cleaned up and painted themselves. Last summer the Fete was centred at the Farm site, using the outbuildings and grounds for different activities.

Lots more could happen

Thamesdown Borough Council have spent as much as they intend on making the Farm Community Centre usable. The community of Toothill is being lookec to, to get a project together which would make full and proper use of the "hole site.

These are some which could be done at the farm;a pottery; a motĂ&#x2DC;rcycle workshop; car maintenance; a p4tice skittle alley; indoor rifle range; a play farm with real animals; a community television station; a Photography Darkroom.

These--ire just a few. There must be many more ideas around.

Interested ?

This will be a self help project, te community are going to have to get involved to make it work. What is needed are people with enthusiasm and ideas who can do some fund raising by applying for grants and who have skills available. We need plumbers, electricians, tilers, bricklayers , concrete mixers and layers etc; in fact anytody willing to put interest and energy into the project.

Alternatively if, money is raised to pay for materials, Community Industry, a Goverment agency might do the work for free. a huge job, but an exciting idea. If it catches your Altogether i imagination, get in touch with me Roger Ogle at Toothill Farmhouse, Bodiam Drive or on 26161 ext. 454.

TOOTHILL Y0TJI'H CLUB meets in what was an old barn at the Farm Site,' It was' formed 18 months ago and meets on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday evenings, between 7.30 - 9.00p.m. and on Sundays from 6.30p.m.. The Youth Club is an independant organisation and is run by volunteers.

More people are needed to run or supervise activities.A strong Management Committee is required to raise money and to come up with ideas to make the Youth Club a better one. 'e need people interested, in running sports teams who could. organise outdoor activities like camping trips; Discos; Karate or motorcycle maintenance; or Drama or Dance or Mime grollpsLHobbies Crafts etc..

nearest chemist is well over a mile away (nearer 2 miles) and that is a hefty distance for someone who is ill or elderly. Are we going to gat a chemist - if so, when?

3) FOOTPATHS - again particularly worrying when you consider the number of young mums with prams traipsing to town.

Can we expect a footpath by or around the Shaw Lane roundabout or must an accident. occur before action is taken?

4) LIBRARY - with so many young children and young mums on Toothill and Frshbrook, do we not merit a mobile library, albeit every fortnight?

DANGER - apart from the footpath (or lack of) already mentioned two particularly dangerous situations are very evident on our estate. Firstly, however well we Lolice cuur .children, hildren, the inevitable Lire of a building site will always continue with the obvious inherent dangers of broken glass, upturned nails and tools left unattended overnight. Gouldr't the respective builders fence QfÂą their sites and in so doing wouldn't that help t problem of pilferinw which worries heir them so much that on three seperate nights (to cur vcnowledge) the police ran spot checks on all cars leaving Toothill.

Secondly - a problem particularly worrying to the residents of Belsay,(who incidently have made repeated attempts to discover the ownership) of a very, very large ditch (about 12 foot), which after a heavy rainfall fills with water and again pcvides an inevitable lure to youngsters to form a "human chain" to retrieve balls and home made boats etc.

Can't the owners (wnoever they are) fill it in or again must a disaster occur?

Others put a different point of view. Lovely countryside and farmland is destroyed. Problems abound, and life is not always rosy.

Which is the true picture - the inviting prospectus, - or our moans and groans?

To my mind, it's a bit of both.

New houses are needed all the time, and the planning here is sometimes streets ahead of what has happened in some other places. Lessons have been learned, but it takes more than planning to build an estate; it takes hard work, and it makes demands on all of us,

But can we ask God what he makes of this, as he watches us, so to speak? Is he glad, or depiessed?

Glad, I'm sure, to see people working constructively, making a new place, a new home, new friends. Sad when opportunities are ignored and things left half-done. Patient when we go wrong. Willing, as always, to accept us as we are - and then to work with us and for us.

God is interested in what's new.

• To celebrate National Playgroup Week (19 - 25 May), • Toothill Farm Playgroup arranged several special • events for their children.

The week began with a visit by the local Police Officer who entertained the children with a talk on road safety.

On Tuesday, films featuring the Green Cross Code and playgroup activities were shown by the Health Visitor.

• Thursday produced a visit by Mr. Brownie and his 1957 • Dennis Fire engine. After allowing the children to • explore the appliance, Mr. Brownie kindly gave a very • interesting and informative talk on fire drill. (some • of you may have noticed that we were featured on the • front page of Thursday's Evening Advertiser).

• The grand finale to this exiting week was a visit by • Sargeaiitiles from the Wiltshire Constabulary's Traffic • Division, who brought along his patrol car and took the • children around the estate to demonstrate the car's • equipment.

SO YOU THINK NOTHING EVER HAPPENS AT TOOTHILL? The weather this past winter has been terrible - wet, windy, snow, hail etc. - and no doubt many people have felt that they must have been nothing ever crazy to move on to Toothill, "Well, I mean hanpens here, does it?"

There were signs of community life before Christmas and quite a few new activities have started up in this year. The following is a list of groups that exist in Toothill which are looking for new people to get involved.

The Toothill Youth Club managed to get through the winter without any heating.

Our District Centre Toothill and Freshbrook will each have a village centre serving day-to-day needs of the people living within about 500 metres. Plans are now being made for the DISTRICT CENTRE , which will serve at least the 25,000 people living in Toothill, Freshbrook and Whitehill.

What would you like to see in the 25 acres set aside to the north-west of the big roundabout on Tewkesbury Way? Thamesdown Borough Council and Messrs. E.H. Bradley and Son Ltd. each own oart of the land. A joint working party is studying possible commercial uses - shops, offices, pub, petrol station, etc.

A second working party is looking at possible social and Community uses. These could include physical recreation and sport, library services and perhaps a Family Centre with facilities for people of all ages to help each other enjoy a full life. The needs of young people and the elderly may suggest possible residential cr leisure-time amenities. Adult education, the arts, including music and drama, a church and of course health facilities are also on the agenda.

It will be some years before the District Centre is finally completed, but land will very soon have to be allocated and some decisions have to be made in the next few months.

The first 500 households in Toothill were surveyed in and a lot of very helpful information and ideas were received. These are now being fed into the planning.

THE GARDEN ROSES Garden roses will now be growing rapidly, and a mulch should be applied round the stems. Hoeing can be carried out to destroy weeds, but do not dig in the mulching material LAWN CARE Summer mowing should now be under way. Twice a week cutting will be necessary when the soil is moist.

For weeds use either a Hormone preparation or Lawn Sand. Raking before mowing is important this month as the combined action keeps the runners of clover under control.

The subject of junior education for the children of Toothill and Freshbrook is being raised again. Many parents are becoming increasingly concerned at the Wiltshire County Council's attitude that a seven year old child can be deposited on a double decker bus, and without supervision, be transported across Swindon to a school, which has little or no involvement with his or her home community, and which is now becoming full. This ridiculous state of affairs is being allowed to happen while only 135 out of 280 places at Toothill school are taken. In addition to this, a new school is due to open after Christmas at Freshbrook and initially this is also to offer places for infant education only.

A recent petitioning letter sent to the Chief Education Office setting out parent's concerns had virtually 100% support of parents who have children 'going up' in September. This group of parents are not prepared to accept the situation and intend to pressure the authorities into agreeing to the phasing in of junior education forthwith here at Toothill.

Any parent, especially those with children approaching junior school age, who is concerned about their child's education, should help us show the authorities that the children of Toothill need their own school and do not wish to borrow someone elses.

Help us win by supporting us. You don't need to do anything or even say anything - just let us know you want what is best for your child.

The committee would like to thank everybody who came for their support, On July 3rd we are having a general meeting at the school at 7.30 pm to discuss our next year's activities, e.g. Bingo, Socials, sponsored walks etc.

You need: 1 gallon cold'atar 12A-b. sugar 7 heads elder fJow(?r

2 lemons 2 tablespoons white wire vinegar

Bring the water to the boil and pour it over the sugar; when cold, add the flowerheads, lemon slices and w.itc wine vinegar.

Cover and leave to stand for 24 hours. Syphon or strain off and bottle, using strong bottles, preferably with screw too.

After about 10 days to a fortni - ht it should be ready to drird: and verX fizzy - as it relies on natural yeast the fizz doesn't always happen, but it's still very good without.

You need: One bottle cider (if dry, add a few lums of auar) 2 bottles soda water 1 small glass brandy 1 lemon Peel the lcrnon thinly, and put the rind with the cider in a jug or bowl, with a sprig of borage or a few strips of cucosher rind. Toothill folk find their voices There "s P magnificent turnout of about 120 residents to the meeting vith Tbmesdown councillors and officers on July 4th; thank you to all who came, and prticularly to all those who helped with the arrangements. ' further meeting wns held on July 11th of the people who had put their names down ns volunteer representatives on July 4th. It was 'greed here that the old Steering Committee (who organised the nublic meeting) should continue to function, plus the volunteer who came forward until elections of representatives can be held; since we are, and always have been, anxious to avoid self-election and non-accountability. We aim to be recognised as the body which all Toothill residents have had the opportunity to nDprove so that we can push the Council and other authorities to deal with YOUR grievances.

As you can see, despite wh'o said in our last issue, once again the LINK wings its way to you COMPLETELY FREE OF CHARGE! And as far as we can see this will remain the case for the rest of 1979!! Basically the reasons are that thanks to much hard york and a deal of generosity from certain quarters, we have already managed to raise sufficient funds for the next three issues.,.

GOOD 30IĂźANIONS Members of the Good Companions had an enjoyable afternoon at Dodingtor.i House on Monday 21st June and went by minibus provided by Age Concern. de were lucky with the weather and had bright sunshine. A guide conducted us over the Regency House which has some fine furniture and pictures in its spacious rooms.

Some of us were able to visit the Coach Jseum and take a brief walk inthe grounds which extend for miles over wood and meadow and there is a lake making a picturesque feature.

We do not confine our membership to the over 60s. Anyone over fifty, who is free to come to our Monday meetings, will be welcomed. We normally meet on the second and fourth Monday of each month at 2.30 in the Community Room at the School. Contact Ann Tweed, 25 Queenborough (Swindon 44927) for the date of the next meeting.

Toothill Junior Youth club .ORrnping Trip to the iew Forest We left the Youth Ulub at 10a.m. and we got to the Lew Forest at 2.30p.m. When we got there we went to put the tents up, then we went to Thornyhill and played fox and hounds.

We went back to the camp site to cook a meal, played some gaLes and then went to bed.

The second day we got up early, had breakfast and went on the beach. Later we went to the amusement arcade and go-kart track, then we had dinner, went to the pictures to see "Battle Star Galactica" and then home to bed.

On Saturday we were going to have another game of fox and hounds, but some of the children were silly and wouldn't play.

We waited for the BBC and then we went on a map-reading exercise.

We had our dinner then we went to the beach for a barbecue. It was a little cold but us kids went into the sea.

On Sunday we played games, put the tents down, had our lunch, then went to the beach. We set off for home, arriving at Toothill about 7 p.m. It was so good (Jacky Williams, for the group)

Nicola Cornforth 12 years old TOOTHILL CARNIVAL

Toothill Carnival held on Saturday 7th July 1979 at the Farmhouse was a great success. The weather was good and the attendance by residents was encouraging.

A colourful procession was followed by a stunning display by Penhill Majorettes and a sctacu1ar performance by Kung Fu exnrts.

There wereemany interesting sideshow and stalls but the main attraction seemed t b' the licenced bar which was open cli day!

Two discos in the evening were well attended and spirits were kept un despite two power cuts in the Farmhouse disco! Shaw community Play Farm The Farm is in the village of Shaw, just a mile away as the crow flies from Toothill, and a little further by road. The farm provides children of all ages with the opportunity to see, touch and play with a variety of animals and birds.

They are encouraged to feed them and if they like they can often help with cleaning, grooming and general farm routine. Under supervision, pony and donkey rides are available.

Opening Times to the public are 9a.m. - 11a.m. Monday to Friday from 1st April to 30th Sept. and organised parties may arrange to come at any convenient time by telephoning LLrs. L'Lstrange at Purton 770166 and booking.

Entrance donation is 15p. per head to help offset running costs. The Farm also needs help financially and practically; if you can, contact Mrs. L'Estrange.

An attractive place for a family afternoon out.

You can picnic, walk, rest and play There is plenty of open space for children to play and run around. Variety is provided by a lake and a stream and wooded areas.

Although many trees have died recently through Dutch elm disease and old age, Thamesdown is undertaking a major programme of replanting.

Lydiard Mansion dates back about two hundred years, and contains much of interest. There is a modest admission fee for the house, but you can visit the grounds free, and the medieval church ( whose monuments were featured recently in The Observer), Lower Shaw Farm Community, Jha;, Swindon Telephone: 771080 We're a group of people living together in an old farmhouse in Shaw, one mile north of Toothill. We organise summer events whici include yoga, massage, gardening, cheese/ bread making, goat/poultry keeping, dancing, spinning, weaving, woodwork, macrame why not visit us during August?

We ask for ÂŁ2 per person per day which includes lunch, but we will take less if you can't aifor it (or indeed more if you can afford that). Children are welcome, particularly during the craft camp. You don't need to book for the whole week, just come along for a day, but do book in advance as places are limited.

The Workers Educational Association (see overleaf) are going to run a course starting 4th October about Toothill and its history over the last 2000 years, So we are reprinting an article that appeared in the first Link last December to wet your appetite.

WHY TOOTI{ILL? Mary people have wondered where the name came from â&#x20AC;&#x201D; something to do with trains perhaps?

But .... a Toothill is a natural or artificial piece of high ground from which the surrounding countryside can be seen.

The pronounciation was often 'tuthill" and in this form looks like the Welsh, "twthill", In London Tothill Street took its name from the toothii]L in Tootehill Fields. It was called the Tootehill or Totehill as far hack as the thirteenth century.

An old name for a watchman was a 'tootere" and toothill was a name for a watchtower, Other words which have a similar meaning are the Welsh "twt" or tTtwyttt (a spring or rising), "totian" (Old English for projection), "toten" (to peep) and "tout" (to look about). This latter form is better known to us as a ticket tout or one touting for custom LL Even in the Wycliffe translation of the Bible "toothill" appears several times. For instance Isiah 21, verse 5 "Prepare the table, watch in a watchtower" is translated as "Sett the burd, behold in a toothill".

There are a number of hamlets in. Enland named Toothill. London has its Tooting, Somerset has a long barrow called the Fairy Toot, to the north of Peterborough Cathedral there is an earthen mound called Toothill and in Herefordshire there is a Norman castle called Toothill U b..,

Our Toothill is an ancient site. It was occupied in the time of the early Britons and diggings in this area have produced a remarkable number of Roman-British pottery Kilns shaped rather like boats.

During the Autumn the Swindon branch of the Workers' Educational Association would like, in association with the local community, to run a number of courses at Toothill.

As an educational body, financed in the main by the Department of Education and Science, the WEA is unique in the fact that the subject matter of its courses is chosen by the students.

So far suggestions include The History of Toothill, and a course for Community Committee Members. Other courses which we have staged in Swindon include Oceanology, Archaeology, Creative Writing and Our Children World (with creche facilities).

Focus on Freshbrook Freshbrook is the second of the 'urban villages' in the westward expansion of Swindon and is seperate from Toothill. The first residents moved in just over a year ago. There are nearly 150 houses occupied now and a population of about 400 with new people moving in all the time. Few people recognise there is a community in FreshbrooK; so this is a front page exclusive.

FRESHEROOK RESIDENTS GROUP FRESI!EIOOK BAR-B-Q The FRG was formed at a public meeting of residents with officers of Thamesdown Council's Community Development section in March 1979. Its purpose is to look after the interests of the residents and their families. This is done in different waysby writing letters to members and officers of the council, by residents meetings and meetings with officials; and also by organising activities in the community.

So far we have met with the Wiltshire Education Department to try for schools here.

This seems unlikely to be due to finance.

In the future we will have meetings with the Landscaping and Project iVanagement side of Thamesdown Council.

Ne have been promised a temporary community centre which might be erected on the site of a future permanent building. Thamesdown have promised £5,000 towards the work to be done by Community Industry. Ladbrokes will put, in a hard base, Bradleys will give us £100 in goods, Brozeley Homes have sent50.

b ur Bar-B-Q was an outstanding success and netted £90. John Neate, our treasurer, is very happy man.

In October we will have an election of officers for the group. The future will need us to be more vigilant over our area.

It would be worth looking at nominating our own ratepayers as prospective councillors.

It is not only our future but our childrens future to grow up in a better world.

Fine weather and a good turnout contributed to the success of the FRG's first social event on 12th August. Pony rides, races and games for young and young at heart were followed by freshly cooked food and scrumpy.

Many thanks to the members of the committee and the large number of volunteers without whose enthusiastic help none of this would have been possible. It is hoped that a second function on Guy Fav'kes Night can be organised Chris Hardy

UNDER 5s IN FRESHBROOK Meetings of the FRG have been held in show houses, but these are closing. We need a building of our own as there is a clear need for a toddlers and playgroup and a place where older children can get together.

Thamesdown Council are helping to get one, but it will be after Xmas before it arrives -unfortunately. To plan for the day when there is a community meeting place the parents are organising different groups for the under five year olds. 'fOOTHILL RESIDENT'S ORGANISATION The elections for residents representatives have been completed and the results are given below. The elected representatives will soon be allocated responsibility for specific streets. In the meantime however the committee have not been idle and a lot of work has been done which is now beginning to get results.

Although we are a new organisation on the Thamesdown community scene we are already making an impression as you will see from the following selection of problems that we have taken up.

'LAY AREAS: As reported in the last issue of 'Link' a reply was received from D. Hodson (The Director of Arts & Recreation) to our letter. We are writing again to advise him that we still believe that there is room for improvement in the safety of play equipment and that we will be conducting our own survey with the help of the Mothers & Toddlers Group.

HEALTH CENTRE: We have discovered that a permanent building is planned for 1983/4. The Wiltshire Area Health Authority have allocated ÂŁ250,000 for the purpose.

DISPENSARY: We have approached the Wiltshire A.H.A. who have said that a dispensary will be provided in the temporary health centre in October 1979. A similar approach has been made to the Area Chemist Contractors Committee (Retail Chemists) who were extremely sympathetic. Despite the claim by Thamesdown Council that "no chemist was willing to come to Toothill", their secretary, Mr. G.H.H. SWINDON TOWN CENTRE: Thamesdown Council have asked to meet 'foothill & Freshbrook residents organisations to discuss proposals for a new town centre. Needless to say we have accepted - and later on there will be opportunities for all residents to make comments.

DOGS: Elsewhere in this issue you will see an article concerning the health hazard to children caused by dogs fouling the school fields. We are asking the Wiltshire Education Authority to erect notices prohibiting people from walking their dogs on the schools grounds. We are asking also that you, the residents, help us to keep this area clean.

COUNCIL HOUSES: We are still awaiting replies to our letters concerning long delays in essential repairs. Lets hope it won't be necessary to send a deputation to the housing managers office, in order to get a reply.

PARISH COUNCILS: A provisional date (16th October) has been made, for a meeting to hear the arguments both for and against the perishing of Toothill, when it eventually, becomes part of Thamesdown.

Further details will be available soon, so please make a note of the date now.

NEW MINISTER FOR TOOTHILL & FRESHBROOK Toothill Church will soon have a fulltime resident minister. The Rev. Ian Handscombe, the Baptist Minister from Upper Stratton, will be moving to Rhuddlan Close (off Harlech Close) at the end of the month and will be inducted at Toothill Church on Saturday October 6th at 3 p.m. Everybody is invited to come and welcome him to our area.

Toothills 6,000 Year History SWINDON

The course, which lasts for eighL; meetings, will be split into two parts: The first four meetings covering the history up to 1750 will be taken by !Jr. iI.J. Stone, who will concentrate on the geology and topography of the area before studying the archaeological finds. These date back to flints of various kinds found on the hill, an Iron Age pit and, below Teothill Farm, a Roman find consisting of Pottery RUns, Buildings, Clay Quarries and perhaps even a Roman Villa.

This will be followed by information about the Saxon presence in the 7th/8th Century, the Redieval Village hich was probably called Iviannington and included a High Street and buildings, together with signs of indutry including Iron workings, and covering an area of some three acres.

This first part of the course will be supported by a number of aeriL..l photographs which dicloe relics invisible from the ground.

The second part of the course will be tken by Lir. C. New and cover Mr. B. Luker, members of the windon Society. They to the present day, and will include a number the period from 1750 of photograph in their lectures. dill

Oliver TOmkins C. of E. School Doubtless many of you will have seen that the building destined to be the Oliver Tomkins School is now well on the way in its building programme and we hope it will be completed at the e nd of November or beginning of December.

Some of you might be wondering about the name of the school - why Oliver Tomkins School? Well, for those who may not know, Oliver Tomkins was the Bishop of Bristol before his retirement and it was while he was Bishop and Chairman of the Diocesan Education Committee, that the idea of having a Church Aided school in the proposed Western Development of Swindon was first conceived, also Bishop Tomkins worked for the Unity of Churches over a very long period and it seemed appropriate that a Community School in an Ecumenical project such as Toothill should bear his name.

January 1980 will see the school opening with the first children being admitted and in readiness for this, I have been acpointed headleacher from 1st September.

Although this school will be a Church Aided School, it will also have a catchment area so that it will serve the families living near it as their school.

The area has yet to be defined but as soon as we know this, we will pass on the information to you.

Several people have asked what I shall be doing from September until January with no children to teach, no school to organise; no, I shall not be having a term "off". When a school is opened there is a tremendous amount of organising to be done beforehand. It is the headteacher's task to order every single piece of furniture, equipment, apparatus and books which will be in the school.

Some of this I have already been working on as large things such as furniture have to be ordered well in advance. Then, staff have to be appointed, not only teaching staff but all the other people who together make up the school community, secretary, welfare assistant, cook, kitchen helpers, dinner supervisors, cleaners. Parents and children will have to be seen so, as you see, I will not be having a term off! Because the school is not ready for me to take up residence, Mrs. Newton, who is a friend of mine has kindly consented to give me a temporary home in her school for which I am grateful, so if you wish to contact me about anything, you will be able to do so at Toothill Infants' School.

Old things can be very precious nowadays - sometimes in actual money value - but more because we grow attached to them. All the more so when everything round is new or unfinished Christianity and the churches are old, and very often people value them greatly because of that. Many more, though feel 'old' means 'out—of—date'.

So the churches tend to be written off as out—of—date, irrelevant or useless. At the same time, a new church doesn't feel right to some folk, for a church for them should be old, quiet with years of use and worship.

The deeper question is whether Christianity is true. If it was true hundreds of years ago, it is still true - but if it was wrong then, it must be wrong today. And if it is true - as I am convinced it is - then it matters as much today as ever. It is certainly old, but by no means out— of—date or irrelevant 1.

Dear Link, Despite the letterfrom the Headmistress in the last issue of the Link, some people still allow their dogs to foul the grass and surrounding paths of Toothill Infants School. Not only is the school, in effect, private property, but the grass has been laid ready for the sole use of the children next year. Already, however, some areas show signs of severe damage and will have to be re-sown.

Finally, as many parents know, certain parasites can live in NORMALLY HEALTHY dogs, cats and especially puppies. One of these is transmitted to children via the faeces of such infected animals and causes a disease called TOXIKARRA. The results of infection vary from mild nervous disease through to epilepsy and eventually blindness. One child in a thousand is already so affected in this country and as the parasites can live in the soil long after the faeces have decomposed it is likely that this figure will increase.

Common sense would show that if pet owners take their animals to the vet for regular screening and avoid 'walking' their animals in areas where children play, the risk of disease would be much reduced. Many pet owners act responsibly and keep their animals under control; however a minority are not so inclined, not caring for the consequences of their actions. Where the health of children are at stake we are all responsible for ensuring that they can play safely in the environs of the school, preferably on clean grass rather than concrete. from a member of the Toothill Residents Organisation

Roger Ogle is the Community Development Cfficer employed by Thamesdown Borough Council to work with the residents of Toothill and Preshbrook. But the burning question right now is WHO IS JACKIE RAFFERTY? The Toothill Link, being a community newspaper place to introduce myself - I'm Jackie Rafferty and title is Arrivals Officer/Community Worker. I have

My job falls into three parts. Firstly, the Arrivals work I try and visit all new arrivals in Toothill and Preshbrook. I tell them about the area and facilities and although I can't answer every query that comes up I can usually point them in the right direction to obtain the information. It is also a useful way of talking with people about community activities and, if they are interested, helping them to get involved.

As part of my job, I live in the Toothill Farmhouse. Next door (the other half of the building) there are several rooms - hall, kitchen and smaller rooms - these are available for use by community groups.

The centre is already quite busy with a playgroup, a summer playscheme, a junior youth club and various voluntary committees using the premises. So the second part of my job is as warden of the farm complex, supporting the groups which already use the farmhouse and helping people initiate new projects.

The outbuildings are in a state of disrepair and the most intact building is the cowstalls which is occupied by Toothill Youth Club.

They have an ambitious renovation scheme in hand. My first priority over the next few months is working out a way of getting the haybarn, stables, pigsties, etc., converted by the community for the community.

At the moment, there are a lot of ideas but few people involved but you'll be hearing from me again as soon as we've worked out a starting point for this exciting venture.

King. **-* **1<*** *** *. * ** *** *** *** *4* *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** *** OUR TRIP TO CRAIHAM CAMP as told by Richard Maguire, 3rd Swindon Cub Scouts (Toothill) 'Ale left Swindon at 6.45pm and arrived alittle late; this is because the driver lost his 4 way. After finding our tents we were allowed to go into the woods and I got stuck in a boggy mud. e chased each other and Ifell over and got a cut on my tummy then we came back to camp and went to bed about 10.30poi.

The next day after breakfast we went on a nature trail, picking all the things we could; flowers, plants, leaves and grasses. Then we went to an obstacle course, which included nets, ground sheets to go under, ropes and a life line. After a break we went on a map reading course, then on to first aid. Peter Faulkner did an expert hand bandage, I did a rubbish leg bandage, a better belly bandage and an even better sling. After dinner of beefburgers and mashed potatoes we had a game of rugby. Then we were allowed into the woods which had been out of bounds before because of the tracking signs. During the evening we sat found the camp fire, sang songs, acted playlets, then went to bed.

On Sunday we had fun and games including water games which Akola was in charge of. After dinner we were allowed to buy sweets then we had to pull the tent down and pack it up. h'e then cleared the camp site and waited for our coach to be taken back home. All of us who went agree the camp was very enjoyable.

T1313T ILL LINK Oct '79 NO 7 Council Delay Toothill School The Oliver Tomkins Church of England Aided School (situated near Edington Close) is to pen in January 1980 and it was hoped that the contractors would then start work on a second school - for Juniors. Wiltshire County Council have now decided not to make their financial contribution as was expected, thus delaying the school for at least a year. The total cost of the second school will rise by a minimum of ÂŁ20,000 because of inflation and the fact that the contractors will have to return instead of carrying on with the building next door to the school opening in December.

Viltshire County Council has recently slashed E31 million off its Education budget The Link hopes to bring you articles on what this will mean to Toothill residents. For example, will you be willing to pay for your children to be bussed?

American takeover Toothill's temporary shop in Dunwich Drive has been taken over by the '7/11' chain of stores, part of the huge Southland Corporation of America. They will operate the hut until the permanent shop being built next to the church is opened in April 1980.

We hope to find out soon. A team of A Level studentsfrom the College doing a course in Statistics and Survey Techniques are going to visit a random selection of houses and interview Toothill residents. They will be asking people what they think of the Link, what they like or do not like, what people would like to see in it, who in the family reads it etc.

They will also be asking a few questions about what is known of Toothill Farm. As mentioned in past Links plans for the Farm are starting to move. The survey will seek your opinion on how it can be developed.

About 100 houses are to be visited out of the 1,300 now occupied. If you are one of the chosen few we hope you can help us.

OUT OF IFTERST How did the roads on Toothill get their names?

Has it ever crossed your mind? There is a popular idea that a proup of councillors sit around picking pieces of paper out of a hat, or is it that council officials like playing scrabble?

In the case of Toothill, the area has been the site of ancient settlements over a period of 6,000 years and it was decided to take the road names from Medieval times. There was in fact a saxon village here in the 7th/8th century covering about 3 acres.

After a list of names is researched they go to the Post Office who reject the ones they think will confuse the public and the postman. The names remaining are then allocated to the main roads or council house developments or offered to private developers to choose for their site.

Below is a list of road names and a brief description of the place alter which it is named.

Beaulieu - Village in. Hampshire with 11th century .iThoy, now in ruins.

Beverley - A walled town and centre of religious studies du.rinr the 12th century in Yorkshire.

Bodjapi - A 14th century fortress which never saw battle. In Sussex.

Chepstow - A ruined fortress built by the liormans near Monmouth.

Colchester - In Essex; has a Norman castle, but was settled from 5th century B.C. - Saxon church in Gloucestershire built in 7th Century.

Deerhuret D unw i ch - Once a large port in Suffolk, now mostly under the sea because of erosian.

Edington - A village in iltshire with 14th Century church.

Flint - A castle in Flintshire built by King Edward I. Kirkstall - A 12th century abbey in Yorkshire.

Longthorp e - A 13th century fortified Manor House in }iuntingdon.

Ludd esd own - A 11th century Norman built manor house in Kent with a Bear Fit as a special feature.

Markenf ield - 14th century moated manor in Yorkshire.

BRING BACK THE BIKE - NEW MOVES IN ThANESDCN ?

In the past 2 months, trade has doubled in Swindon's cycle stores, as more motorists leave their cars in the garage, for journeys into town, for their work and shopping.

But is cycling a recognized part of Swindon's transportation planning?

The emerging need is for a reappraisal of the way in which cyclists are catered for in built-up urban areas, with safety as the starting point. Local Authorities are just beginning to see the advantages of diversifying the emphasis in transportation planning away from the private car alone, and into public transport and the bycycle. This helps to relieve traffic congestion and also relieve the financial burden and environmental impact of constructing multi-storey car parks in the heart of towns. And Thamesdown Borough Council have approved a proposed cycle route network recommended in the Swindon Trananortation Study, some 3 years ago The opportunity has now arisen with the preparation of the Central area District Plan, to urge the Council to act and implement provisions for cyclists. here existing roads and footpaths form the basis for segregated cycle routes, construction costs are minimal.

In this category is the canal way from Kingshill Road to Farnsby Street. The Council has submitted estimates to Wilts C.C. for the delineation of a cycle route here, having recognized it as an existing preferred route for cyclists (those who are rrerared to risk a buckled wheel).

This facility has been justified in terms of an expected increased usuage as Toothill develops. However, it potential as a cycle route will undoubtedly be sutrressed, unless it is pre-pared â&#x20AC;˘.'ith a view to alleviating the sresent dangerous traffic conditions existing along Wootton3a--sett Road, which link it to Toothill!

What is Play

Children learn as they play and talk. Play is nature's way of preparing children for adult life. They need to touch things which may be new to them.: i.e. sand, water, paint, dough, glue, fabrics, wood etc., and to know that being dirty is not being naughty. They also need to know that dirty-play has to be kept within acceptable social limits.

They need the physical exercise of swinging, sliding, climbing, balancing and jumping, and to relate their size to the world around them. They learn to consentrate for a length of time to finish a task. They learn manipulative skills - the control of the hands when drawing, doing puzzles, playing with Lego etc.. They develop their memories when learning rhymes, and listening to stories, and through books develop the desire to learn to read later on.

Small children need to experiment, and not to be expected to produce anything, when drawing, modelling or painting. They enjoy the 'doing'.

So be content to let them experiment in their own way. We need to be able to recognise a learning opportunity, and to know when to use a natural opportunity to discuss things with children. It is very important to talk to children as much as possible, and to always be ready to answer their questions.

Caring for the Elderly There must be about 200 people over retirement age living in Toothill and Fresh'orook. Some are in need of help because they have difficulty managing in this new community. Some are lonely or isolated and would like to chat to other people. Neighbours in some roads are no doubt helping their elderly residents already, but with the coming of winter it is important that no elderly person should be without a friend or neighbour close at hand on whom they can c11.

If you want to help or get involved with helping other people, there is a meeting to discuss a possible project called NETWORK, on Sunday November 13th, 2.30 p.m. in the Cormunity Room at the School. Toothill can seem a very empty place to people on their own a lot, with nobody about and nothing going on. What can make it worse is that everybody else seems to be so cheerful, to know so many other people and have so many friends, • It's not so easy to shrug off the blues, but let me make one or two suggestions.

Find out about something going on - coffee 'morning, evening class, playgroup, Toothil].

Link, the church - and then just go along, It's the going along that's hardest- after that you'll soon be at home. Or find someone living near you in the same sort of situation - perhaps other parents tied .with young children, or older people who can't get out easily.

But if the blues don't go away - ask for help. Don't be afraid to ask - your doctor, perhaps, or one of us from the church team. Don't forget there are many different people, in Swindon and on Tootpill, whose job it is to be available to give help or support.

round this time last year the first issue of the then un-named Toothill LINK droppe through your lett-erbox (if you were here) compiled, typed and delivered by about three people and printed free by Thamesdown Council.

So, what has happened to the LINK in the past 12 months? Well, the aims of the paper remain the same as in the first editorial..'to inform and entertan in additionto providing an opportunity to spotlight any community problems which may arise" ... and I think you'll agree we've done that during the past 8 issues. With sponsorship and advertising our print run has increased from 800 to 1700 copies each issue and largely due to the efforts of Roger Ogle, we have an efficient, small, hardworking volunteer 'typing pool' and distribution network.

However after ONE YEAR IN PRINT the LINK is in grave danger of'folding' for two basic reasons. The first is the usual problem of lack of money; the second is more serious ....TOOTHILL RESIDENTS!! At any time no more than eight of you have bothered to leave your pints or your TV for just one night in 6 weeks to attend a LINK meeting and this is the same group who moan about 'Lack of facilities' and 'Nothing to do in Toothill.' DO SOMETHING TO HELP YOURSELVES. Join in and help build an active, lively area, don't leave it to 'SOMEONE ELSE' its up to you as well. make So why not 1980 a time when you get 'off the fence' and become involved in your AREA, your community, your newspaper.

As you will have read in the 'Evening Advertiser' our very own "Battling Ann Bennett" with others have reached agreement with Thamesdown Busses to provide parental supervisori on the school transport for a two month experimental period.

If its going to work Ann needs many more people than the 8 who have committed themselves. Could you, would you help? Enough people have complained about the behaviour of children on the busses and lack of supervision.

TOOTHILL RESIDENTS ORGANISATION. It is now nearly a year ago that a small group of residents got together to form the steering committee which led eventually to the setting up of the T.R.O. in July this year.

There are at present 21 residents representatives, each of whom looks after the interests of 2 or 3 roads in the urban village of Toothill, (Freshbrook has its own seperate organisation).

Every month the "Representatives Committee" meets to discuss the common problems of residents as well as individual problems. Decisions are made on what action, if any, is to be taken and a small sub committee known as the "working party" meets the following week to operate the committees decisions.

The reresentatives committee now meets on the 2nd Monday of every month at 7.15pm. in the community hut, next to the shop.

Our meetings are open to all residents, so why not drop in to see us?

Remember, all residents are automatically members of the T.2.O. and there is no membership fee.

DANGER ON THE ROADS. A letter from Louise '1ilkie on behalf of the Toothill Residents Organisation.

Through the pages of the Link, Toothill Residents Organisation would like to remind parents living on this estate of the dangers of letting children play on, or near, the road.

As the expansion progresses and building work continues, the main roads in Toothill have become lousy, whilst the many cul-de-sacs can only provide very false havens for the many kids seen playing there. And, while we are concerned for the safety of all youngsters we are particularly perturbed by the abundance of "tinies" seen roaming around alone. At the risk of labelling ourselves "kill joys", it would seem common sense for these little ones to play in the gardens which we are all lucky enough to have.

Perhaps it would be as well to remember the recent Television Campaign which dealt with this subject - and take heed of its strong advice to parents "MAKE SURE THE U1DE? - FIVES STAY INSIDE."

JUNIOR. EDUCATION (OR THE ABSENCE OF IT) ON TOOTHIIJL The Parents and Friends Association, along with other members of our community, have in recent months been campaigning to bring junior schools to the '--estern area and have also tried to persuade the education authorities to provide bus wardens for those 7 year olds travelling to Park North every day. The results of our efforts have been small, but hopefully we have 'the foot in the door' towards continual improvement in future educational policy. The education committee at County Hall have decided on the following policy starting with effect from September 1980:-

That the schools in the Uestern Expansion are to be redesignated for 5 - 8 year olds.

That the situation be kept under continual review.

The problem of supervision on the buses has been discussed by the Education Services Sub-Committee on November 2nd and they resolved to reaffirm earlier decisions not to appoint official escorts, but would have no objections to parents acting in a voluntary capacity as bus escorts. This 'magnanamous' buck passing has led to the inflamed situation that we have been reading about in the Evening Advertiser. Some mums have been organising themselves as escorts and now the bus crews are angry, mistaking parental gusto as a confrontation. The fight must not be with the bus companies and never has been. No one can expect a bus conductor to control 105 active children letting off steam, this has been the argument from the beginning.

The folly is having the buses and not the schools and this must rest with County Hall.

An even more mind blowing fact has recently been discovered, that no one from the Education Department has had the forethought to enquire if there will be sufficient busses in future to cope with the extra number of children moving into the area. 73e have 5 buses at present. There was considerable difficulty in obtaining even one extra single decker. There will be a requirement for 17 buses by September 1983 It seems that the International Year of the Child has fallen to misadventure. - we'll keep in touch.
