Swindon Wildcats reps visit primary school to talk to students about mental health By Jessica Durston jessica@positive-media.co.uk Orchid Vale Primary School had a visit from members of the Swindon Wildcats ice hockeyteam with aims of raising awareness about mental health. Coach and player Aaron Nell, player Emil Svec and goalie Renny Marr took part in a morning of activities focusing around the importance of mental health. The schedule included two assemblies, a hockey training session on the school's AstroTurf sports court area, and a further one-to-one style question and answer session with the players. Aaron shared his thoughts about attending Orchid Vale: "Our mental health and wellbeing is such an important part of all of our lives and the more that the children can learn about it now, the better. “We all deal with our own
mental health in different ways, and we hope that any little thing that we can say or any pieces of advice we can offer, will help the kids here.” Aaron first talked to the children about Swindon Wildcats and answered general questions about the team and the sport in general. The players brought in some kit items to show to the children, and the trophy they won from their match against Leeds in December of last year. After this, Orchid Vale's Emma McCarthy started the conversation around mental health. She asked the children what they could do to help look after their mental health. One pupil said "Learn new things", another said "Eating healthy to help your mind" and others said "Going to bed early" and "Talking about things." The Wildcats members eased the children into the complex topic by explaining

that their headspace could change depending on whether they win or lose games. Aaron shared some advice with the youngsters. He said: "You don’t want to be too high or too low. And you don’t want to be worrying about things you cannot control. "It's important to have fun and enjoy yourselves at your ages. Remember, the sun will come up tomorrow and you will be okay.” After the assemblies, a group of the school's pupil premium students joined Aaron, Emil and Renny for a hockey training session on the AstroTurf courts.
When asked his thoughts about his school visit, Swindon Wildcats goalie Renny said: "When we were growing up, we never really got anything like this, so I’m glad we have been able to come into Orchid Vale and raise awareness and help educate the kids on some touchy subjects." After the training session, other students from various year groups joined the pupil premium for a smaller one-toone style question and answer session with the three players, where the conversation around mental health continued.

Generosity of Swindon people shines after Putin's invasion of Ukraine By Barrie Hudson barrie@positive-media.co.uk Swindon's aid efforts for Ukraine began within hours of Russia's invasion. By the beginning of March, a collection of goods for Ukraine organised by the town's Polish community had amassed enough to send a second lorryload to the beleaguered nation. The Polish Community Centre in Walton Close was serving as a collection point for supplies including clothing, tinned food, supplies for mothers and babies, medicines, bandages and sleeping bags. Swindon people from all walks of life flocked to donate, and volunteers spent hours carefully sorting and packaging items. One volunteer, Radek Mojsak, said: "We sent one 40-tonne lorry to Ukraine last night, so this is going to be the second transport. "There has been a really positive response from all over Swindon. "Here in the community centre, people realised that help was needed, so we started organising collections and donations." Mother and daughter volunteers Zoe and Daisy Payne were among those helping to package donated items. Mum Zoe said that when she first came into the community centre to help the efforts, piles of clothing reached half the height of the interior of the hall space. She said: "It was mayhem because all the donations went over to the Polish Church and then all of us volunteers were like a daisy chain, transporting everything over to the Polish Community Centre and putting it into piles, trying to sort everything into different sections as we went." When helping to sort the clothing out, Zoe found a handmade crocheted angel in a pocket of one of the coats. 4

Zoe added: “My daughter and I have been helping to sort medication. Some of it is prescribed and it’s got people’s names on. We need to count as they go in and make a list. We need to be thorough as these donations will be going through border control." A few days later, a lorry carrying a further 13 tonnes of aid left the town. The cargo included a Teddy Bear and a handwritten card from seven-year-old local boy Marshall Murapa. Marshall rallied friends and family to donate after hearing about the plight of Ukrainians fleeing the Russian invasion. The aid mission was organised by two Swindon businessmen. Don Bryden, who runs KCJ Training and Employment Solutions and youth charity BEST, joined forces with another Swindon man, Lee Hallett of logistics firm OPX Group. Mr Bryden said he started work on the mission after hearing from a Swindon Borough Councillor, Bazil Solomon, that the Polish community needed help getting goods from their collection to where it was needed. "We of course said, 'yes,' little knowing the logistics of it," said Mr Bryden. "I tried all over the place and eventually phoned Lee Hallett of OPX Group. He said exactly the same as me, 'Yeah, of course we'll do it.'
"He then put me on to his number two, Ryan Gower." Complications included having to modify the lorry in accordance with EU regulations and individually marking items to conform with export rules. The team were moved by the efforts of Marshall Murapa, who was invited to watch the lorry being loaded alongside mum Amie and dad Bruce. Marshall said of the refugees: "I saw it on the internet and felt really bad for them - we've been trying to help out for three or four days." The many Swindon fundraisers

In addition, staff said, during class and through assemblies students had been learning about the challenges currently being faced by the Ukrainian people. Some Swindon people were directly affected by the crisis. They included a would-be doctor from the town who was left in limbo after her studies in Ukraine were halted by the war. Saaria Ahmed studies at Dnipro Medical Institute of Traditional and NonTraditional Medicine in eastern Ukraine, about 240 miles from Kyiv. Ms Ahmed, who already holds a degree in biology, decided to train overseas after finding British medical schools oversubscribed in spite of an ongoing doctor shortage. Returning to Britain last December as covid numbers increased, she continued to study online - but that was before the invasion. She spoke of the friendliness of the Ukrainian people she had met, and of her landlord and landlady bringing gifts

The Eco Briefing - How to save money on Insulate yourself against higher energy bills Do you know your home’s energy efficiency rating? You’ll find it on the Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) provided when you bought or rented your home. It displays an energy efficiency rating from A (most efficient) to G (least efficient) for the property, which is valid for 10 years. Making our homes more energy efficient is one of our biggest challenges when it comes to tackling the climate crisis. Around 46% of UK
homes currently have a C energy efficiency rating – the level the Government has set as a target for as many homes as possible to achieve by 2035 – and the remaining 16 million will need further insulation measures. Inefficient homes have always cost more to heat, but after the jump in energy prices in April, it’s estimated that people living in 16 million UK homes currently rated EPC D or below will pay a cumulative £3.9 billion a year more for heating than they would if they all met the EPC C standard. If you want to reduce your carbon emissions and keep your energy bills lower, installing insulation or draughtproofing will reduce heat loss. Measures you can take include: • Roof and loft insulation: you can lose 25% of heat through the roof of an uninsulated
home. • Cavity wall insulation: About a third of all the heat lost in an uninsulated home escapes through the walls. • Solid wall insulation: if your home was built before the 1920s, its external walls are probably solid walls rather than cavity walls. • Floor insulation: insulating your ground floor, or any floors above unheated spaces like garages, will help keep the heat in your home. Newer homes generally have ground floors made of solid concrete while older homes are likely to have suspended timber floors. • Draught-proofing: draught-proofing is one of the most cost-effective ways of keeping your energy bills low. Heat can escape your home from any gaps,
holes or cracks, from gaps in windows and doors through to open chimneys. • Insulating tanks, pipes and radiators: water tanks and pipes lose heat quickly, so insulating them will keep them hotter for longer, saving you money and reducing the energy you use. Energy efficient windows, doors and conservatories: Switch and Save Wiltshire Windows (WW) say making your doors, windows and conservatory more energy efficient will reduce your energy bills and lower your carbon footprint. Energy efficient glazing covers both double and triple glazing. These are windows with two or more glass panes in a sealed unit. Homeowners can also improve the energy efficiency of their home by installing secondary glazing, or even by using heavy curtains. In addition, energy efficient glazing reduces heat loss through windows and means fewer draughts and cold spots. The double glazing installer says that not only do energy efficient windows keep the heat in, they insulate homes against external noise and can reduce condensation build-up on the inside of windows. By installing A-rated double glazing to windows in an entirely single-glazed semi-detached gas heated property, Wiltshire Windows estimates that a homeowner could save £95 per year and 330kg of carbon dioxide. Opting for A++ rated double glazed windows to replace single glazing could incur savings of up to £115 per year and 405kg of carbon dioxide. Wiltshire Windows say in England and Wales, the easiest way to make sure your windows are fitted to the UK Government’s 6
building regulations standards is to choose an installer who is registered with one of the official competent person schemes such as Certass. Installers registered with these schemes will give you a certificate when the job is finished that states your new windows have been fitted in compliance with the regulations. Tunnel vision in store for Link Editor as part of Prospect Hospice Sahara Trek fundraising Last month we were pleased to announce that Swindon Link had put together a team to tackle a trek across the Sahara Desert in aid of Prospect Hospice in March 2023. And now as part of his fundraising efforts for the trek and in a bid to get fit enough, Swindon Link editor Jamie Hill will be taking part in a race that will see him running 10k beneath the city of Bath. The Two Tunnels Race takes place on Sunday 8 May and it cuts right under the city. The Somerset & Dorset Railway closed in 1966 and until April 2013, the tunnels had been sealed and inaccessible. But thanks to the hard work of the Two Tunnels Group and Sustrans over a period of seven years, the tunnels now have a new lease of life as a shared use path. Jamie said: "I really am a glutton for punishment. I ran a

Stars of the big and small screens will visit Swindon when a new film and comic con extravaganza comes to Steam. The gathering over the weekend of 18 and 19 June will allow fans of Doctor Who, Blade Runner, James Bond films and other classics to venture into their favourite fictional universes. It will be run by Stars of Time, who organise the annual Comic Con at the Tropicana in Weston-super-Mare. Stars of Time event organiser George Burrows said: “We are excited to be bringing the event to Swindon for the first time this summer following on from huge demand at our other venues." The Swindon Film and Comic Con promises to bring sci-fi magic to life with a variety of special guests, immersive displays, eye-catching props
and vehicles. Special guests already lined up include fifth Doctor Peter Davison and his companion Janet Fielding, and 'Bond girls' Madeline Smith (Miss Caruso, Live and Let Die) and Valerie Leon (The Spy Who Loved Me and Never Say Never Again). Swindon & Wiltshire Pride 2022 cancelled The Swindon & Wiltshire Pride Committee has announced that the event planned for August this year will not be taking place. For the past 12 years, this annual community parade and festival at the Old Town Gardens, Swindon, has been a celebration of diversity and inclusion enjoyed by many thousands of people. Swindon & Wiltshire Pride has been an eagerly anticipated event on the town’s events' calendar, but a number of key committee members retired last year and the Pride team say that unfortunately nobody has come forward to replace them. The team say that Swindon & Wiltshire Pride is a community event, and that with the lack of a replacement committee the current committee has taken the decision not to hold the event this year. Vice chair Steve Mason said: "This decision was not arrived at lightly and we appreciate
the disappointment not only from the LGBTQIA+ community but by the many Swindon residents who have come year on year to support us.” The committee thanked all who had supported the event over the past 12 years, including the many sponsors and local businesses who gave their time and donations; as well as the talented artists who performed on the various stages.
The money raised through fundraising events already held will go towards a potential smaller event later in the year, supporting the charity's other objectives and also go towards the 2023 event. The committee said it would continue to raise funds for the charity, and that it was vital to the LGBTQIA+ community to keep Pride free and celebrate and support each other.

Council detail plans for new Moredon sports hub Swindon Borough Council say plans are still going ahead to create an exciting new sports hub in Moredon. Designs for this multipurpose, multi-generational sports facility include a competition level cycling closed road circuit, a BMX pump track, a full-sized all-weather football pitch, a new pavilion with changing rooms and a café at Moredon Recreation Ground. The new facility, just off Akers Way, will also still feature the popular grass football pitches, croquet greens and cricket wickets. Councillors hope construction will start this summer.

Pat can still remember watching Sutton United for the first time in 1948, when she was around 12 years of age. This year, 74 years later, she has had the chance to watch Sutton play against Swindon Town on her doorstep. Pat's passion for football started from a young age. She said she used to attend football matches as a child and her obsession for the sport grew from there. She said: “I would go with one of my female friends and watch the games when I was younger. Although I had three brothers, I was the maddest on football. "My mother thought that as I

Schools pulled out all the stops to celebrate World Book Day By Barrie Hudson barrie@positive-media.co.uk Schools in and around Swindon did their bit to celebrate World Book Day. The mission of the special day is to change lives through a love of reading. At Lawn Manor Academy, staff got into the World Book Day spirit by dressing as favourite characters from books for young people. Royal Wootton Bassett Academy marked World Book Day by decorating classroom doors with tributes to favourite books. Students' creations celebrated tales ranging from Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney to Eric Carle's The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Perennial favourite author Roald Dahl, whose classic works include Charlie and the Chocolate factory and Fantastic Mr Fox, also featured prominently in the young

people's work. There was swashbuckling World Book Day Fun at Noremarsh Junior School in Royal Wootton Bassett, where pupils dressed as pirates, complete with eyepatches, bandanas and cutlasses. Each year group had a
pirate-themed book that they studied and enjoyed, completing various activities from wordsearches and crosswords to writing stories and poetry. There was also a challenge to find pirate treasure hidden in the forest area, with
children hunting for 12 bottles containing clues to find where the treasure was hidden. World Book Day is celebrated in more than 100 countries across the globe, and offers every child taking part a book of their own through a voucher scheme.

Discounts at Old Town businesses are quite literally on the cards By Barrie Hudson barrie@positive-media.co.uk A new scheme offering money off at a range of independent Old Town businesses has officially been launched. The Friends of Old Town card scheme is the brainchild of the Old Town Business Association. In exchange for a donation of at least £10 to cover a year's membership, people will receive a card entitling them to discounts at - so far - almost 70 independent businesses. The launch event at The Core was attended by dozens of members of the Old Town business community and local VIPs. Association vice-chair Kris Talikowski, owner of The Core, said: "We've pre-sold 300 cards and we have 68 businesses doing offers. "Every aspect of Old Town is represented - there are restaurants, cafes, bars,
takeaways, professional services, and hair and beauty salons." Every penny of the money donated will be spent on association events such as the annual Christmas Lights switchon and the Sausage and Ale
Trail. Participating businesses include pubs such as The Tuppenny and Longs, restaurants including Los Gatos and Old Town Thai and other businesses ranging from Deacons Jewellers to Precious
Moments Photography. Christ Church Community Centre is also taking part. Mr Talikowski added: "I think that after covid everyone is looking for the opportunity to start to live again, so as the jewel of Swindon's leisure and retail economy Old Town is hopefully the first place people think of when they come out. "The community has always been really vibrant." Guests at the launch included Swindon Link owner and editor Jamie Hill, who said: “These new cards not only give you a great reason to make some much-needed savings when you’re out and about but also give you an incentive to try some shops and eateries that you might not have visited before.” He added that the scheme came at a time when independent businesses needed plenty of support.

Wroughton-based dairy company offers zero waste door-to-door delivery service 10 Green Bottles, based at Wroughton's Berkeley Farm Dairy, run a zero waste dairy product delivery service for Swindon residents. The Gosling family have been producing and bottling milk at Berkeley Farm Dairy in Wroughton for over 100 years. In 1908, John Gosling started delivering milk in glass bottles to local residents in Wroughton. The milk rounds continued to grow and by the 1970s Gosling's milk was said to be available all over Swindon. Chris from 10 Green Bottles said: "Sadly the rise of cheap milk in plastic bottles from supermarkets led to a huge loss of customers and our milk rounds were discontinued in 2000. "Now, after just over 20 years, we are back with a modern approach to doorstep milk delivery in the form of ‘10 Green Bottles’." The 10 Green Bottles team
say they provide a service that delivers the highest quality dairy products, and other locally produced groceries, direct to customers' doorsteps twice per week using solarcharged electric vans. The company's products are packaged in glass bottles or jars, that are then returned, washed and reused. Other products, such as butter and bread, are packaged in compostable bags. The 10 Green Bottles' team pride themselves upon the fact their products are locally produced and manufactured from the Berekley Farm dairy in Wroughton, using milk from local herds. Chris added: "All of our milk is organic which means that it has been produced without fertlisers, pesticides, herbicides and hormones." As well as producing and selling food and drink products, 10 Green Bottles' online shop
also includes toiletries and household washing items, and household decorations and essentials. The dairy delivery service team are also planning open days in light of a recent BBC Panaroma documentary that was shown on television highlighting general animal welfare and the way dairy cows are raised and milked. These open day visits are due to take place during the summer holidays later this year. The 10 Green Bottles team say they aim to show members of the public how their dairy cows are looked after firsthand.
Chris said: "You'll get to see the cows up close in their fields, the milking parlour, dairy factory, and learn how we produce not just the milk but our signature butters and yoghurts as well. Council bidding to bring national rail system 'home' to Swindon By Barrie Hudson barrie@positive-media.co.uk Swindon Borough Council has submitted what it hopes will be a first class bid in the competition to find the new home of the nation’s railways. The Government is looking for new headquarters outside London for Great British Railways (GBR), which will become the single accountable body responsible for running Britain’s railways. Locations across the country with strong historical links to the railway are encouraged to make the case for why they should be the new home of GBR. The new central headquarters
will be the heart of the rail network and provide strategic direction for the running of GBR. The council believes Swindon’s rich railway heritage, together with its ambition for Great British Railways (GBR) to be at the centre of a world-leading rail cluster that will herald a new golden era for Britain’s railways, are important elements of the bid, which has cross-party support. Council leader David Renard said: “The railways are part of Swindon’s DNA and I believe there is no better place for the new Great British Railways to have its headquarters." Labour Group leader Cllr Jim Grant said: " “Swindon’s unique
railway heritage makes it the ideal candidate for the Great British Railways HQ. “The town can offer a central location to act as a hub for the railways in a way none of the other competing towns can. We have history, culture, location and the facilities to do it."
All bids will be measured against six key criteria, including considering how GBR will align with levelling up objectives, its location, opportunities for GBR and the level of public support in the communities involved.
Swindon Hindu Temple Trust looks forward to future in new home By Barrie Hudson barrie@positive-media.co.uk A new town centre home has been secured by Swindon Hindu Temple Trust. Swindon Borough Council has made its former offices at Regent House, close to the Wyvern Theatre, available for the trust to use as a temple and cultural centre. The council will lease the surplus building to the trust for an initial period of seven years. A planning application for a change of use from offices to a place of worship and community centre will now be submitted and, if secured, it is hoped the trust will be able to move into its new home by June this year. The ultimate objective of the community is to have a combined Hindu Temple and Cultural Centre. The aim is for the structure to be built along traditional architectural lines. Cllr Keith Williams, Swindon Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Finance and Commercialisation, welcomed the Regent House announcement, saying: “This 20
is fantastic news and I’m really pleased for everyone associated with the trust as they can now begin to look to the future. “We have been in discussions with members of the trust for several months to try and find them a new home so it is great to finally get to this position. As a valued and respected part of our community, I wish them every success in their new home.” A spokesperson for Swindon Hindu Temple Trust said: “The vast Hindu community in Swindon has been through a lot recently with the unfortunate loss of the only Hindu Temple and Cultural Centre in the town. During this time, Swindon Hindu Temple Trust has worked relentlessly to re-establish the Temple. “We are delighted that we will soon have these two new premises and feel confident that combined together, they represent the best possible solution and would provide much needed flexibility to serve the religious, cultural, social and charitable needs of the community. "We are grateful to the council for all their help and
their continued support.” A series of break-ins last year at the trust’s former premises in Cheney Manor Industrial Estate left the building in such a poor state that it could no longer be used and was deemed as unfit and unsuitable for community use. In January, councillors supported a motion to continue to support the trust in its search for new premises and to meet with other Hindu and South Asian faith and community groups who had expressed an interest in finding an alternative community and worship facility. Since that time, the council has been in regular discussions with the trust to support it in finding a new home and has
helped the trust in different ways. As well as Regent House, the trust has negotiated the use of another venue in Wroughton from a private landlord, with both properties providing the necessary accommodation and flexibility to support the trust’s temple, cultural and community activities. The council says it was pleased to be able to help the trust through this difficult period and will continue to help with its long-term objective of building a Hindu Temple and Cultural Centre with traditional architecture, which will be a permanent location for the community and worship facility for the Hindu community.

Interview - In conversation with Dr Neville Staple - the Original Rude Boy from The Specials Swindon Link reporter Jessica Durston was overjoyed to be given the opportunity to conduct an interview with original member of The Specials, coordinator of From The Specials and solo artist in his own right Dr Neville Staple. After The Specials split in 1981, Neville has performed with multiple different musical outfits, as well as building an impressive solo portfolio. He currently performs with the band ‘From The Specials’ who released an album last year. Now at the age of 66, Neville continues to write and record music, and will embark on a UK tour this year. The ska legend continues to create iconic two tone toe-tappers, as well as doing charity work and even finding time to write a book! You may also notice his title – Neville received an honorary degree from Arden University in 2019. Dr Neville Staple spoke to me from his home in Coventry for half an hour and I urge everyone to read the full interview at swindonlink.com/ lifestyle/interview-dr-nevillestaple/ as he is a true musical pioneer, and this piece gives a mere flavour of our whole conversation. 2022 marks the 40th anniversary of The Specials’ iconic hit, Ghost Town. This track is close to my heart and is a favourite of my mother’s too. First on the agenda was finding out what would be in store for audiences attending the band's UK tour. All the stuff that’s written or produced is done by myself or my wife and manager Sugary, but when we perform live, the band will put their own little spin on it.” Ready and raring to go, Neville added that he encouraged his band members to add their own flavour to the mix. He said: “It’s not about telling the band to ‘play it this way or that way.' The only way it’s going to work is if we give the band creative freedom. If we tell people what to do and become strict, the creativity goes away.” I was also keen to find out more about Neville’s experiences of lockdown, and what it was like to write, record, and release an album during a pandemic. He said: “We had plans to make an album and that, but when you get forced into lockdown you just don’t know what is going to happen. “The band had to send their parts to Sugary and it was all put together afterwards. We would work out the lyrics and put a very rough drum ‘n’ bass rhythm just to give the band an idea of the sound and the timings. The band would then sort their bits and send them over to Sugary and she would help bring everything together. “It was definitely a strange experience not having the band with me in the studio. I had to depend on my ears and do things the old fashioned way. We got it together in the end.” Neville and From The Specials also released a single entitled

Lockdown, about the pandemic. He added: “We sat down and wrote our feelings about being stuck at home. My songs are created from what is around me at the time – and there is a lot of that on this new From The Specials album. “We filmed the music video for Lockdown inside our home.” Neville and I then moved on to discuss more generally what it was like to be a songwriter in the middle of a pandemic. He said: “It was easier because I had Sugary with me she keeps me focused and less distracted. “After releasing the single, I wasn’t writing too much about lockdown and other big things that were going on. People know what is going on as they’re seeing or hearing about it on the news all the time. “When me and Sugary write, we try bring what’s going on around us into our music but in a different way - not so inyour-face.” As well as writing and putting out music over the past couple of years, Neville and Sugary have also been filling their time doing charitable work and giving back to the community. Neville and Sugary are both ambassadors for the children’s

charity Zoë's Place. The charity provides palliative and respite care for very or terminally ill babies and children up to five years old. The couple are also advocates for the fight against knife crime, after the tragic loss of Neville’s grandson. Neville said: “My grandson got stabbed and killed in 2018, so we do a lot of work to help fight against knife crime. We go to schools and youth offenders prisons and talk to children and prisoners about knife crime. “I tell these young people, I used to be a rough rude boy on the streets and to look where I got to later in life because I didn’t follow the bad path.” Neville also released a single entitled Put Away Your Knives in aid of the fight against knife crime. Lechlade Music Festival Returns with a Boom
The three-day Lechlade Music Festival returns this year, from Friday 27 to Sunday, 29 May. The multi award-winning, family-friendly festival has bounced back for 2022, after the pandemic kept the event out of the calendar for two years. Now festival-goers will get to celebrate the 10th Lechlade Festival with a stellar line-up. Pop songstress Alexandra Burke headlines Saturday night and legendary music giants The Boomtown Rats will headline the Renishaw Main Stage on Sunday night, closing the show on a stupendous line-up of live music. Over 100 artists will perform across five stages. This year sees the addition of a new second arena, a silent disco and a cabaret stage, featuring internationally acclaimed artists along with local talent. Friday sees headline tribute acts Guns or Roses and JK as Robbie Williams take to the stage. The introduction of the MusicLab Open Mic night on Friday will give would-be performers the chance for a slot at the festival. Children time-travel through 1,300 years of history with Swindon Museum and Art Gallery Children at Chiseldon Primary School had the opportunity to travel back to Anglo-Saxon times and see original seventh century artefacts in their classrooms. During a visit from the Swindon Museum and Art Gallery’s ‘PopUp Museum’, children, staff and parents saw historical artefacts discovered in the local area and took part in workshops to learn more about them. With the Museum’s Collections & Engagement Team, children were able to closely study four rare coins unearthed minutes from the school in 2017 and 2018. The silver sceats (small, thick coins) feature images of peacocks, wolves and warriors and date from the Early Medieval period between 720 and 745AD. The children also became history detectives for the day as they examined weapons found in a local Anglo-Saxon grave, including a sword, spearheads, and parts of a shield. These artefacts were uncovered between Chiseldon and Wroughton in 2000 and are now in the care of Swindon Museum and Art Gallery. The objects are believed to have belonged to a local warrior of high status. There was also an opportunity for children to dress in replica Anglo-Saxon costume, see original Anglo-Saxon combs, and wield a replica shield. All 180 of the schoolchildren, from years 1 to 6, took part in the Pop-Up Museum visit. Swindon Museum and Art Gallery cares for a variety of historical collections dating from pre-history to the present, including natural sciences, archaeology, world cultures and social history. Many of the artefacts tell the story of the people of Swindon and the development of the local area.

Nick Hatcliffe, Deputy Head at the school, said: “This was a really important opportunity to share local heritage and for children to be able to compare and contrast their own lives and those of children in Chiseldon over a thousand years ago. It was a fantastic way to bring history to life and to add an extra dimension to pupils’ learning.” Chiseldon Primary is one of 27 partner schools currently working with Swindon Museum and Art Gallery as part of their Schools Outreach Programme. The coins studied by the children were purchased through the Portable Antiquities Scheme, a project managed by the British Museum which records archaeological finds discovered by the public. Anyone who has found interesting archaeological objects locally is invited to have them assessed by the Wiltshire Finds Liaison Officer on Friday, 25 March at Steam between 11am 3pm.

Lesser known is that Ukraine’s literary scene, especially poetry, is very strong. The national poet of Ukraine is Taras Shevchenko. In 1847, he was convicted
and exiled for promoting the independence of Ukraine from Imperialist Russia and for writing poems in the Ukrainian language. So long ago, and here we are today with Russia still gnawing at the same old bones. Shevchenko’s influence on Ukrainian independence and literature is immense. He’s the most quoted Ukrainian poet. This poem, Zapovit, meaning “Testament” is one of his bestknown. Making Swindon a Better Place to Cycle Monthly column with Becky Cox of Swindon Cycle Campaign. What does Swindon Cycle Campaign (SCC) do? Well, we aim to be the voice of cycling in Swindon – a group of volunteers dedicated to making our town a safer and more attractive place to cycle in. This voice needs to be as diverse as possible and we need voices of people who would like to cycle more but are deterred by things like traffic, barriers on existing cycle paths and not knowing where to start. SCC aims to promote cycling and help more people to enjoy the freedom and joy it brings. Our three main focuses are: 1. Improving Infrastructure – this often involves consulting on council proposals and new developments, for example filling missing links across the

Four teams will earn a shot at promotion in the play-offs. And the other two teams will be left preparing for another season in League 2. It must be mentioned that over the first 36 game weeks Swindon have found themselves in the automatic positions just five times. However on the other hand they've found themselves outside the play-offs just eight times. For the rest of the season, Town have been an ever present in the play26
town centre, the New Eastern Villages development and more recently the Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan for Swindon. 2. Promotion and Increasing Participation – this often involves organising events, providing advice and information and helping people to cycle more. Previous things SCC volunteers have helped organise include the Swindon Cycle Fest, setting up a free orienteering challenge across Swindon, supporting disability cycling, Learn to Ride sessions and working with local media outlets. 3. Moredon Cycling Hub – For the past six years, SCC volunteers have been working with the council on a successful bid to British Cycling for the funding of an inclusive cycling
hub at Moredon. So, what are we planning for this year? As a volunteer-led organisation we naturally have limited resources. We’ve planned things for 2022 but are keen to have suggestions and input from more local people. We’d like to start work on an ‘Accessibility Audit’ to map out where barriers exist on the current cycle network. This could include things like steps, poor surfacing or staggered gates which make such paths difficult to use for many people (e.g. those with cycle trailers, adapted cycles and disabled cyclists). This map could be used by the council to identify ‘quick wins’ when funding opportunities arise. We also need help with

But unfortunately football doesn't necessarily work like that. With the climax growing ever closer I sat down to preview the Robins' fixtures in April. It's fair to say that the run in looks relatively kind for Town. A home fixture against Newport County will prove to be the only remaining contest against a fellow promotion contender. It will certainly have huge ramifications for both sides' promotion aspirations. Swindon's three away games in April all take them to sides stuck in mid-table. This factor might be key for Town. The hope is that sides with little to play for will potentially offer very little resistance in the way of Town's promotion
charge. The remaining two home games both witness former Town gaffer's return to the County Ground. Popular exmanager Richie Wellens will be the first to arrive on Easter Monday as he brings his Leyton Orient side to SN1. With Orient looking behind themselves in the standings the fixture should prove to be a highly contested battle at both ends of the table. The final home fixture will certainly follow the same pattern when Mark Cooper and Barrow arrive in Wiltshire The Bluebirds will require maximum points in a bid for their survival. Despite the fixtures looking kind it must be remembered that Town have struggled more against teams in the lower half of the table rather than teams in the top half. However, the

From getting our club back to signing new exciting players. From a rare FA Cup run to appearing in the third round for the first time in ten years. From Harry McKirdy's goal against the champions to Dion Conroy's header against Oldham. This will be a season to remember. But hopefully one more positive can still be added - a first ever win at the new Wembley on 28 May.
