Acknowledgement of Country As an international student living and studying in Melbourne, I respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which I learn, design, and imagine, the Wurundjeri people of the Kulin Nation.

Coming from a different cultural background, I see this land not just as a place of education, but as one with deep, continuous stories that began long before my arrival. I acknowledge the strength, wisdom, and ongoing connection of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples to Country, to land, water, and community.

Studying architecture here, I’ve come to understand that design is never neutral. It carries histories, voices, and responsibilities. I am still learning how to listen. In this studio and beyond, I want to approach architecture with humility, to not only respect Aboriginal culture, but also to learn from its ways of caring for Country, understanding space, and honoring community.

I pay my respect to Elders past and present. I hope to grow into a designer who contributes to more thoughtful, inclusive, and grounded places, always remembering whose land I am working on.

Understanding the site

Looking through the site images, I found some potentials to make use of the planting beds, solar panels, and existing turbines as design elements for the canopy.

For example, the panels can collect rain water for vertical garden (developed from existing poles)

How to make the petals work?

During the testing process, I found that the frame that holds the petals modules has the significant impact on the shape of the petals.

Also, the way the frame is built would influence on the overal form of the canopy.

Canopy form --> Framing system Option 1: basic cross Option 2: Decide the petal form then adjust the frame following the petal Option 3: The petals work not only by wind but also by the the weight balance of itself on the joinery. Changing the axis of the petals will change the form structure Option 4: Possibility to make the petals interlock by itself and do not have the frame.

Canopy form finding

Final form

This cube-like structure matches the shape and form of the mycostar modules as square angle in every corner.

It has cables anchoring 4 sides of the structure. The areas of footing are also optimized to support stability.

Initial sketches of layouts The spaces vary from public to private, ensure users have enough public spaces to connect with each other and also enough calming spaces to release stress during break and after work.

The planting beds are filletted, which leads users to their pathway easier and minimizes sharp corners within spaces.

Imformed by the site visit, identified the entrance point to the rooftop and noted that the north and east sides offer the best views

Divided area into two zones: the zone closer to the entrance with better views is designated as public, while the zone towards the back is defined as semi-public

Testing larger scale

The mold is 3D printed with combination of 4 pieces for both half. Spreading one thin layer of mycelium.

Apply a sheer fabric on that layer and spread another layer. This petal grew in a week.

The front side which face to the outside of the facade was well grown, nice textured.

Take out the mold. The underneath is hard to grow properly because not enough mycelium.

Bake in an hour with 80 degree.

MYCELIUM GREEN ROOF AND FACADE GRID COMBINATION Taking over the design of new level, I found that the design should focus on some specific design elements: existing/ new circulation, transition area, yoga space, mezzanine and green roof. Also, the roof needs more attention to adapt with the timber structure of the new facade which has a standard grid system (diamond grid). The angle of the sloping green roof also aligns with the the facade frame.

Testing Grid dimensions

Testing with variable U and V divisions: 14 x 14: the diamond is too big -> Planters are 800mm wide -> the planters are easy to break/ heavy planters with large amount of earth and water will press on the thin timber frame.

17x17: A good scale: - Propotion of the gap: produces good shading for indoor space.

- Buildable frame and planters.

- No trigger of planter under the mezzanine.

21 x 21: the diamond is too small - > Planters are less than 400mm wide -> Can not hold enough earth, earth is easy to be flown down -> The gaps between planters are small and prevent natural light come into the spaces.

-> Result in a line of planters covered by the mezzanine -> lack of sun light and water approach.

Insight 3 - Extracted funtions I found potential spaces in this yoga studio: Insight 1 - Yoga room spatial planning - The yoga space should be minimal and comfortable for specific activities.

- Making use of natural light and repetitive rhythm.

- Selected materials: textured concrete, timber cladding, white plaster finish.

2/ waiting area - is an ideal area for transitioning activities, especially for yoga preparation.

5/ changing room: should be allocated next to the main studio and define gender separation. Toilets can be shared.

Command: animate the petals on the facade to move like a Ned Kahn facade — each one flicking or fluttering independently in response to wind. The movement should be random but fluid, like a ripple or shimmer across the surface.

Panels stay in place, just rotating slightly. Keep the original lighting, material, and background. Camera stays still. the petals slightly move, which means the shadow casting behind should change following those petals. make the petals flutter up and down. Stable camera. focus on the petal’s movement.

Animation testing with Kling The quality of the video is better than LTX in terms of resolution and graphical performance.

The movement of the petals are more gentle and it creates the waving effects similar to Ned Kahn building facade. However, the Kling takes longer time to produce the outcome - as it mentioned “more than 3 hours” and the actual time I tested was approx. 6 hours.
