Not every couple dreams of a ballroom filled with 200 guests. If you’ve ever wished for a wedding that feels more personal than populated, you’re not alone. Smaller guest counts mean less stress, more meaningful connections, and the chance to splurge on details that matter most. And here’s the thing: this tiny wedding trend isn’t going anywhere.
There is growing interest in intimate celebrations, with small weddings and elopement packages becoming increasingly popular. These types of events are drawing more attention, and venues throughout Florida are responding to the demand. From custom microwedding menus to beachfront elopement offerings, these options are gaining momentum for couples who want something intentional.
So what exactly counts as a small wedding?
How does a microwedding differ from an elopement? And which path is right for you? Let’s break it down...
A small wedding typically hosts 50 to 75 guests. It’s still a wedding in the traditional sense: ceremony, cocktail hour, dinner, and dancing. But it feels more personal. With a smaller group, couples often find they can actually have conversations with everyone on the guest list. The budget stretches further, too, which means they can upgrade the menu or invest in a photographer they adore without the cost ballooning out of control.
The flip side? Family politics can make narrowing down the guest list stressful, and the logistics still require coordination across multiple vendors. But for many, the payoff is worth it. Just imagine saying your vows among the tropical blooms at Sunken Gardens in St. Pete, surrounded by 60 of your nearest and dearest. It’s intimate without losing that celebratory energy.

Microweddings fall in the 10 to 50 guest range. Think of them as a sweet spot between a traditional wedding and an elopement. Couples still enjoy the structure of a full wedding day: ceremony, dinner, even toasts. But the vibe feels closer to a family gathering or dinner party.
The beauty of a microwedding is that you can go all in on the details. With fewer mouths to feed, couples often splurge on curated tasting menus, personalized décor, or specialty cocktails. The challenge, of course, is sticking to such a limited guest list. It can be harder than it looks!
Venues that feel too small for a larger party suddenly become perfect for a microwedding. Craft Tampa sets the stage for an elegant dinner cruise, where couples and their closest loved ones toast against a stunning waterfront backdrop.
Elopements have evolved from secretive courthouse ceremonies into stylish, intentional celebrations. They usually include just the couple, an officiant, and maybe a handful of guests—rarely more than 10—and are chosen for their intimacy, simplicity, and freedom from tradition.
They can be wildly romantic. Picture a beachfront elopement at Isla del Sol Yacht & Country Club, where the two of you say “I do” with the panoramic views of Boca Ciega Bay sparkling behind you. Or imagine a lush garden ceremony in the gazebo at Casani Estates, surrounded only by nature and the person you love most. With so few logistics to juggle, elopements are often the most stress-free option—and the most budget-friendly.
Still, it’s worth noting that family and friends may feel left out. Don’t stress: many couples who elope choose to host a celebration later, whether it’s a backyard barbecue or a chic reception, so loved ones can still share in the joy.

When deciding which option fits, couples should ask themselves: Who do we truly want by our side? What do we want to spend, and where do we want to splurge? And finally, what atmosphere do we want to create? A lively reception, an elegant dinner, or a private adventure?
Here’s the thing: there’s no right answer. The best celebration is the one that feels authentic to you. And with Florida venues offering packages tailored to smaller celebrations, you really can have the best of both worlds: flexibility and intentionality, without compromise.
Whether it’s a garden wedding for 70, an art-filled microwedding for 30, or an elopement for two, small doesn’t mean less.
These celebrations are often more intentional, more personal, and more joyful. So give yourself permission to plan the wedding that truly fits. Because at the end of the day, the size of your guest list doesn’t define the magic; your love does.
At Here Comes The Guide, Sophie helps couples discover venues that reflect their love and vision. With experience spanning hotels, wedding planning, and supporting wedding pros, she understands the magic that happens when a space feels “just right.” Sophie’s goal is to make the venue search less stressful and more inspiring, so couples can focus on what matters most.

For many couples, the venue search starts with one big, confusing question: What kind of place are we even looking for? They know they want something romantic, modern, or boho, but they cannot quite put their finger on what that actually means.
Then they start scrolling through barns, ballrooms, gardens, and rooftops, and suddenly the entire process feels like trying to pick an aesthetic without knowing your own vibe.
Here is the thing: couples usually talk about style, but venues think in terms of setting. It is not that they are speaking different languages; it just feels that way.
One side dreams in adjectives, the other talks in nouns. Somewhere between “ethereal romantic” and “industrial chic,” the message gets lost.
Let’s make it simple: no pressure, no fluff, just some honest advice to help you figure out what you actually want and where to find it.

What’s the Difference?
Think of style as the vibe. The feeling or aesthetic that fits your personality. It is how your day should look and feel: soft and romantic, sleek and modern, warm and rustic, or wild and boho.
The setting is the type of space where that style comes to life: a garden, a ballroom, a barn, a rooftop, a beach, or something completely different.
The confusion happens when couples fall in love with a look before realizing that not every setting can pull it off. A moody candlelit vibe is not great in a glass-walled venue flooded with natural light. A black-tie look might not pair well with a rustic barn.
Knowing your style helps you choose a setting that makes sense. Knowing your setting helps you focus your search so you are not falling down an endless Google rabbit hole at two o’clock in the morning with forty-three tabs open.

If the goal is soft lighting, lush florals, and romantic, storybook-style photos, think gardens, estates, or historic mansions. These spaces bring built-in charm and natural light is always your best friend.

Clean lines, neutral tones, and a “less is more” energy call for a contemporary setting such as a gallery, rooftop space, or sleek hotel. These venues provide an effortlessly cool aesthetic where every detail stands out because nothing competes for attention.

It is the cozy, natural look without the splinters. Barns, farms, or wineries are perfect for couples who want something laid-back but still beautiful. Bonus points if you love string lights, farm tables, and sunsets.

If your Pinterest board looks like a black-tie affair, traditional venues such as ballrooms or country clubs give you the grandeur you are after: chandeliers, marble floors, and builtin sophistication. It is timeless for a reason.

For couples who want their wedding to feel like an extension of their free-spirited lifestyle, look toward outdoor spaces such as beaches, gardens, forests, or private estates. Think organic textures and loose florals.

Exposed brick, metal beams, string lights, and a mix of old and new give these spaces their character. Lofts, warehouses, and renovated factories bring an edge to your day without losing the romance. Just make sure there is enough space for Grandma’s dance moves on the concrete floor.
Tour at the right time of day.
Love the sunset glow in photos? Make sure your venue faces the right direction for it.
Some venues are all-inclusive, while others are a blank slate. Both can be great, but your budget needs to know the difference
Guest flow, parking, bathrooms, and rain plans may not sound romantic, but they can make or break the guest experience.
If a venue’s aesthetic does not match your vision, no amount of décor will change that.
The best sign you have found the right space is when you can truly picture yourself there.

Here is the secret most couples miss: you don’t have to choose between your dream style and a practical setting. The magic happens where they overlap.
A garden can be modern. A ballroom can feel boho. A barn can be elegant. The key is how you layer décor, color, and mood over the foundation the venue provides.
Before you panic-search “wedding venues near me,” take a breath. Figure out what you want your day to feel like, then look for the type of space that can make it happen. There is no wrong answer. Only the right match between your vibe and your venue.

When it comes to planning a wedding, design can feel like the most exhilarating— and overwhelming—part of the process. Where do you begin? With a color palette?
A mood board? The never-ending scroll of inspiration photos? Couples often define their day through the lens of style—rustic, elegant, modern—yet those labels only scratch the surface. What do they really mean when you start choosing textures, shapes, and details that tell your story?
Some couples find their muse in pop culture or travel; others build entire celebrations around a song, a movie, or a moment in time. But for this styled shoot, we decided to turn our gaze backward and “call on the past” for inspiration. We selected three vintage wedding photographs and had three wedding planners reimagine them for today’s couple. The result is a tribute to timeless romance: modern interpretations that honor the elegance, spirit, and storytelling of the decades that came before.
“Real framed family photos, earthy tones, and an intimate setting layered the space with memory.”

• 2 oz white rum
• 3/4 oz fresh lime juice
• 1/2 oz simple syrup
INSTRUCTIONS :
1. Add rum, lime juice, and syrup to a shaker filled with ice.
2. Shake well until thoroughly chilled.
3. Strain into a chilled coupe or cocktail glass.

This editorial began with my grandparents’ 1940s wedding photo, a simple long-sleeved gown, bridesmaids in pleated gold mustard and green dresses, and a cascading bouquet. The whole understated elegance felt timeless, and I wanted to honor that history while modernizing it for today. There’s something profoundly beautiful about simplicity when it’s rooted in personal meaning. When I found a newspaper clipping that revealed their reception was a breakfast, the vision became clear: a tablescape inspired by a morning together. Teacups accented the standard glassware, and individual apple pies from Sweets Bakehouse stood in for dessert, a nod to ration-era ingenuity and the comfort of home.
The floral recipe was specifically designed to honor wartime Victory Gardens, with blooms arranged by Design by Schell to look freshly gathered from a backyard garden. Dehydrated fruit slices accented cake tiers and tabletop styling, symbolizing creativity during scarcity. I imagined the table set in a home library with mismatched chairs, heirloom china, depression glass, and silver reserved for “the good occasions.” Lace overlays and ruffled placemats echoed the bridesmaids’ pleated dresses, creating a tactile connection between fashion and styled design.
One of my favorite design aspects revolved around the bride. A sleek, minimalist sleeved gown from Truly Forever Bridal reimagined from my grandmother’s original dress. I added a porkpie hat (a favorite 1940s accessory) paired with a veil. It’s a fresh interpretation of confidence: a bride choosing a hat not as novelty but as understated sophistication. She’s effortlessly confident. Once it’s removed, her hair is perfectly undone in the most natural, elegant way, achieved with intention by Adore Bridal Hair and Makeup.
Real framed family photos, earthy tones, and an intimate setting layered the space with memory. This shoot became more than design; it was a love letter to my grandparents’ legacy with proof that even wartime simplicity can feel luxurious when crafted with intention. Every detail was intentionally chosen to honor the past while offering inspiration and ideas that a modern couple could embrace today, or years from now.”

“It feels nostalgic yet fresh, honoring an iconic decade while reminding us that bold design and a sense of humor never go out of style.”

:
1. Fill a tall glass (Collins or highball) with ice.
2. Pour in the tequila, then the orange juice.
• 2 oz blanco tequila
• 4 oz orange juice
• 1/2 oz grenadine
• Orange slice
• Maraschino cherry
3. Slowly pour the grenadine down the inside of the glass — it will sink and create the signature sunrise gradient.
4. Garnish with the orange slice and cherry.
When asked to interpret the 1970s, I knew I didn’t want to replicate the decade. I wanted to reimagine it. My inspiration came from a photo shared by Jordan, SWEL’s Executive Editor, of his parents’ wedding, a casual elopement filled with floral wallpaper, a Kelly-green dress, and a boldly plaid suit. It wasn’t traditional, and that’s exactly what I loved about it.
I wanted to capture that same sense of authenticity, the kind that feels unpolished in the best way. My design leaned into a 70s aesthetic through a modern lens, feeling cheery, whimsical, and undeniably groovy. The color palette of green, yellow, and brown captured the unmistakable warmth of the decade, with bold, happy tones that lift the mood and invite playfulness. Textural contrast was key throughout the design. Wicker and wood softened the bold colors, while amber glassware and patterned linens added depth and nostalgia.
Each design element was chosen to tell a story. The short Kelly-green dress from Camilyn Beth, paired with a long veil, challenged convention while celebrating individuality and joy. Monochromatic yellow florals emphasized texture over variety, set against a backdrop reminiscent of 70s wallpaper. Wooden menus, daisy-shaped place cards, and fondue for dessert reinforced the retro charm without tipping into kitsch. The result feels nostalgic yet fresh, honoring an iconic decade while reminding us that bold design and a sense of humor never go out of style.”

“My favorite element of the shoot was the bride’s attire from Truly Forever Bridal, which featured removable soft puff sleeves, hints of lace, and beaded detailing, all while staying true to the modern bride’s desire for a gown with clean lines and simple touches.”
• 2 oz bourbon
• 1 oz sweet vermouth
• 1 dash Angostura bitters
• Maraschino cherry for garnish
INSTRUCTIONS :
1. Combine bourbon, vermouth, and bitters in a mixing glass with ice.
2. Stir until well chilled.
3. Strain into a cocktail or rocks glass.
4. Garnish with a bright red maraschino cherry.

My ceremony shoot was inspired by a photo from my inlaws’ 1977 wedding and a photo of them sitting on an all-too-familiar patterned yellow and brown couch surrounded by family. I wanted to reimagine that photo from the lens of a 20-somethingyear-old newly engaged couple who are sentimental and deeply connected to their family, with the desire to use the image as a source of inspiration for their own wedding plans.

The color story was pulled from the photo with a modern twist; the 1970s were known for their earth-toned palettes, so I knew I wanted to bring in a blend of vibrant colors paired with nature-inspired themes, which complemented the architecture of Hotel Haya’s Los Novedades ballroom; golden yellow, hues of orange, warm brown and touches of red and pink were used within the color story.
Continuing the nature-inspired theme, the ceremony featured an organic, grounded floral arch from Design by Schell, which felt as if it were naturally a part of the venue and resembled a warm hug from a family member. To carry the inspiration even further, I incorporated plush seating from A Chair Affair into the ceremony design, which was a direct nod to the original photo of my in-laws seated on that iconic couch. I wanted the design to convey the same feelings of intimacy and closeness as the inspiration image, scrapping traditional rows of cold chairs for cozy seating that felt inviting and lived in.

My favorite element of the shoot was the bride’s attire from Truly Forever Bridal, which featured removable soft puff sleeves, hints of lace, and beaded detailing, all while staying true to the modern bride’s desire for a gown with clean lines and simple touches. These elements were all an echo of the era and a spin-off of my mother-in-law’s original dress. The groom’s tailored blue suit provided a crisp contrast reminiscent of the classic baby blue suits of the 1970s.
My goal for the shoot was to show couples that it is as easy as using a loved one’s photo to personalize and sentimentalize your wedding day, creating a one-of-a-kind and unique day you and your loved ones will remember for a lifetime.”

Your venue sets the tone for everything. For me, it wasn’t just about aesthetics, it was also about the logistics of hosting a destination wedding where most guests would be traveling. Choosing a resort setting allowed us to create a weekend-long experience where everyone could gather, celebrate, and relax.
If your guests are traveling, keep convenience top of mind. Ask about airport access, nearby hotels, restaurants, and activities. Venues that require extensive outside rentals may add cost and complexity. On the flip side, bringing in your own rentals can help you design a look that feels completely unique.
One of the best choices we made was hosting a Welcome Reception for all of our guests. For destination weddings, this type of event is invaluable. Guests arrive from out of town and want something to do, and a welcome event gives them an immediate sense of celebration while allowing you more quality time together before the wedding day itself and feeling rushed during Cocktail Hour. For us, it was the perfect way to share the place we love most.
While a Rehearsal Dinner is still a wonderful tradition for family and the wedding party, pairing one with a Welcome Reception ensures that all guests feel included from the very beginning. It sets the tone, creates connection, and allows everyone to experience more of the destination.
As a wedding planner, I thought I’d seen it all. I knew how to build a seamless timeline, what questions to ask, and how to prepare for every scenario. However, when it came time to plan my own wedding, I quickly realized that being both the planner and the bride brought a whole new perspective. It reminded me that even with perfect plans, the magic comes from being present and trusting your team.
Here are the lessons I learned along the way, and the advice I’d give to any couple planning their wedding.
As a planner, I’ve always stressed the importance of a detailed timeline, but as a bride, I learned just how valuable buffer time is. Things always run longer, whether it’s hair and makeup, extra family photos, or simply a moment to breathe before the ceremony.
We chose to do a first look, which gave us extra time together and allowed most photos to happen before the ceremony. For some couples, waiting to see each other at the altar is essential. My advice? Decide based on what matters most to you emotionally and logistically. A first look can mean more time together, better lighting, and a private moment, without diminishing the magic of walking down the aisle. No matter what, build in buffer time. It’s the key to staying relaxed.
Of everything we planned, making our ceremony deeply personal was most important. We chose heartfelt vows and invited our moms to do readings. It was emotional, meaningful, and had nearly everyone in tears, exactly what we hoped for.
As a planner, I wanted the details to feel magical. But as a bride, those authentic moments with our families and friends ended up being the most unforgettable part of the day.
I’ll say this loud and clear: you need a backup plan you actually love. Weather is unpredictable, and while we had our dream outdoor vision, peace of mind came from reserving a tent and indoor options as well.
Too often, couples treat the backup plan like an afterthought. But if you dislike your Plan B, you’ll spend the week glued to the forecast. Instead, invest in an option that excites you almost as much as Plan A. That way, rain isn’t a disaster, it’s simply a shift.

One of the biggest decisions was entertainment. Do we go with a DJ, a band, or both? We opted for a fusion that blended live music with a DJ, creating a high-energy, unforgettable atmosphere that had everyone dancing for hours.
Entertainment sets the tone. Do you want a packed dance floor, a mix of live and modern, or something cultural? Choose what reflects you, because guests will remember how the night felt more than any detail.

“But as a bride, those authentic moments with our families and friends ended up being the most unforgettable part of the day.”
As a bride, I saw firsthand how much smoother things ran when transportation and room blocks were handled early. We arranged trolleys so guests never had to worry about how to get from hotel to venue, and we secured blocks at nearby hotels so everyone had easy booking options at different price points. This level of planning shows your guests you’re thinking about their comfort as well as their budgets. The more seamless the logistics, the more energy guests bring to celebrating, and the fewer last-minute questions you’ll need to answer.
Another essential tool is your wedding website. Include it in multiple places on your invitations, and don’t worry about repetition. Think of it as your central hub, with every detail in one place: timing, locations, transportation info, accommodations, travel tips, and even recommendations for local sights and bites. A clear, thorough website prevents confusion and keeps everyone informed.
One of the most meaningful parts of our wedding was weaving in personal details, from invitations to signage to colorful florals. Every piece felt intentional and represented us as a couple.
And yet, the most important part was letting go. Even as a planner, I hired a planner for event management. I trusted my team to do what they do best. That trust gave me the freedom to be present as a bride, not just the behindthe-scenes orchestrator.
Planning my own wedding reminded me that while details matter, the true magic comes from the people, the love, and the moments in between. Timelines will shift. Weather may surprise you. Something will change last minute, and that’s okay.

My best advice? Be present. You hired experts for a reason, so let them handle the logistics. Even if something doesn’t go perfectly, you’re usually the only one who notices. Your guests will simply remember how much joy and love they felt. Focus on the meaning of the day, and trust that it will unfold beautifully.

The Florida Wedding Backup Plan
The Florida Wedding Backup Plan
You Can’t Skip
You Can’t Skip
Planning a wedding in Florida often feels like a dream: palm trees swaying, ocean breezes, and endless sunshine. But weather in the Sunshine State is as unpredictable as it is beautiful. A bright, cloudless morning can transform into an afternoon thunderstorm without much warning. And during hurricane season, wedding plans can be impacted even more dramatically. That’s why every couple marrying in Florida needs a solid “Plan B.”
A backup plan isn’t just a precaution; it’s peace of mind. It allows you to fully embrace your wedding day without the stress of watching weather radar. In this article, we’ll explore why a backup plan is non-negotiable and how to create one that ensures your day is just as magical, rain or shine.
Florida is famous for sudden downpours, particularly in the spring and summer. In coastal cities, brief afternoon storms can pop up almost daily. While they may not last long, they can wreak havoc on timing, seating arrangements, hair and makeup, and vendor setups.
From June through November, tropical storms and hurricanes are a reality. Even if a storm doesn’t directly hit your wedding destination, it can bring heavy winds, flooding, or travel delays that affect guests and vendors.
Rain isn’t the only concern. High humidity, intense sun, or an unexpected cold front can make guests uncomfortable. A backup plan allows you to keep everyone safe and relaxed, no matter the forecast.
Many Florida venues, from historic estates to beachfront resorts, offer both indoor and outdoor options. An indoor ballroom or covered terrace can be transformed with décor, lighting, and florals so your guests still experience the same “wow” factor you envisioned outside.
If your heart is set on staying outdoors, you will need to reserve a tent in advance (often 6 or more months in advance depending on your date). There are so many beautiful tent options to complement your wedding aesthetic:
For couples who want an immersive, glamorous, and modern wedding experience where the beauty of the outdoors becomes part of the celebration itself and guests can dance under the stars.
With soaring center poles, the interior feels open and expansive. Guests experience a sense of grandeur when they walk inside, and the high ceilings allow for dramatic décor like chandeliers, draped greenery, or cascading florals.
With translucent fabric that feels lighter and more organic, this tent is one of the most sought-after for Florida weddings. The wooden center and side poles add a natural element, blending beautifully with the surrounding landscape.
Unlike pole or sailcloth tents, frame tents don’t require center poles for support. This means they can be set up on almost any surface—grass, pavement, patios, even rooftops—making them ideal for venues with space or ground limitations.
A good backup plan involves conversations with your vendors. Photographers need to know where they can shoot indoors. Caterers should have a plan for transporting food quickly if weather forces a location shift. Musicians may require covered setups to protect equipment.
Discussing all of this ahead of time ensures no last-minute scrambling. Most importantly, hiring a wedding planner with experience with Florida weather can be a game-changer since they will have experience with these needed contingencies.

Beyond logistics, having a Plan B brings invaluable peace of mind. Weddings are emotional milestones, and the last thing you want is weather worries distracting from the joy of the day. Knowing that your vendors and venue are prepared for any curveball means you can stay focused on what truly matters: celebrating your love surrounded by family and friends.

It also sets the tone for resilience and flexibility, qualities that will serve you well throughout married life. After all, rain on your wedding day has long been considered a sign of good luck, symbolizing cleansing, renewal, and unity.

Florida’s natural beauty makes it a coveted wedding destination, but its unpredictable weather makes planning a little more complex. A solid backup plan and great vendor team ensure that whether you’re basking in golden sunshine or taking cover from a passing storm, your day will remain unforgettable.
Think of Plan B not as a second-best option, but as part of your design. With the right preparation, your wedding will shine just as brightly—rain or shine.
Because at the end of the day, the forecast doesn’t define your love story. You do.
