We have clear seasons here. Some people reckon we have four seasons, but the Sámi people have taught us there are actually eight. Winter is divided into three seasons; early winter, true winter and spring-winter. The climate and seasons are very important to the Sámi people for their reindeer herding, and as our guest we can offer you all kinds of things to do depending on the timing of your visit.

Being 200 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle, we enjoy winter sports from October to Midsummer. Cross-country skiing, alpine ski tours, downhill skiing, snowboarding and hiking on DE ST I NAT I ONS OF SW E DI S H L A PL A ND KI RU NA

skis. We drill holes in thick ice on rivers and lakes so that we can fish for char. Silently, close to nature and all her animals, we head out with teams of eager dogs pulling sleds. Or we take our snowmobiles miles out into the wide mountain world, or to forests of snow covered fir trees.

Kiruna is undergoing an exciting transformation. The entire town is about to relocate because the mine and ore deposits are extending beneath what’s currently the town centre. However, our warm welcome and wild countryside surrounding the town will still be here to greet you, just as they have always done. Welcome to Kiruna, we have the raw materials, the culture, the experiences.

There is no time to rest at this time of year, artists from all over the world gather in Jukkasjärvi to create this winter’s ICEHOTEL. For about six weeks there is fervent activity in the small village by the Torne River. Building a hotel out of ice is hard work, cold and often demanding. However it is also a process filled with love, characterised by playful, magical moments, such as when creative lighting enhances the impression of an already immaculate, translucent ice creation.

The awareness that ice is a transient material inspires boldness in trying new ideas and letting creativity flow. Everything is preserved inside the walls for a few months and the ice melts and the water returns back into the river as part of a natural cycle.

Jukkasjärvi has a long history as a meeting place for people from both near and far. The name comes from a Sami word meaning “meeting place by the water” and at the ICEHOTEL, encounters are at the heart of everything. Visitors meeting locals, man meeting nature, ice meeting creativity — a meeting that transforms the ice into art, at least for a short time.

In 2016, the gates to something new were opened on the shore of the Torne River in Jukkasjärvi. A permanent, all year round, snow and ice experience — ICEHOTEL 365!

There had long been a demand for year round visits to the ICEHOTEL and after 27 years as an international attraction following the changing seasons, the dream of a permanent snow and ice hotel came true. ICEHOTEL 365 is powered by a solar facility harnessing the nearly constant daylight in Lapland during the summer. At the height of the midnight sun season, visitors can enjoy and be awestruck by the magic of winter at ICEHOTEL 365.

– When we got the idea to run the ICEHOTEL with the help of solar energy, we decided to make it happen right away, to create an ice experience that is available all year round, explains ICEHOTEL founder Yngve Bergqvist.

The hotel, open all year, is a complete experience, featuring 9 luxurious suites with bathrooms, 11 art suites; all sculpted by selected artists, an ice gallery with an ice sculpting studio and an ICEBAR, serving champagne and other beverages in glasses made of ice.

The elegant exterior combines the iconic, arched architecture of the ICEHOTEL with traditional construction methods, harmonising well with the surrounding environment. During the summer, the roof is covered with grass and as winter settles in Jukkasjärvi, the 2,100 square metre facility becomes part of the classic ICEHOTEL.

• The construction of ICEHOTEL requires approximately 30,000 cubic metres of ‘snice’ and 1,000 tons of ice.

For most guests, the stay at ICEHOTEL is an experience they’ll never forget.

Many find it easy to sleep well at temperatures below freezing point, because the surroundings are so quiet and cool. Most guests spend a night in the cold area of the hotel and then one or more nights in the warm area.

Staying at ICEHOTEL is an experience quite unlike any other. This is why a survival course is held every evening for new guests, providing them with an introduction on how they should dress and use their sleeping bags. All guests staying in the cold area of the hotel are

checked in to a special warm building where their luggage and other equipment are stored.

The temperature inside ICEHOTEL never drops below minus 7 degrees Celsius, no matter how cold it is outdoors.

Before you hit the hay, you should dress in warm base layers, pull your hat down over your ears and slide down into a bed made of blocks of ice, a thick mattress and reindeer skins.

In the morning, you’ll be woken with a hot lingonberry drink before you head off for a lovely sauna, a delicious breakfast buffet and a variety of activities.

THE FREESKIERS’ FAVOURITE Riksgränsen is not only Sweden’s northernmost ski resort, but also the most legendary. The skiing is incredibly efficient here, making the most of every metre of space there is to use. Much of the skiing takes place off-piste, but by no means all of it.

There are lots of great pistes which are undulating and winding. There are also numerous off-piste areas easily accessible alongside the pistes. Quite simply, great skiing.

Every spring, freeskiing stars from all over the world make the pilgrimage here to round off their season with a celebration: NM, or the Scandinavian Big Mountain Championships.

They come here to compete for the title on Mount Nordalsfjäll, but also because of the informal atmosphere here where no distinction is made between pros and happy amateurs. Do not forget the varied skiing, which means that most people who come here return time after time.

The feeling of standing on a mountain peak, with fairytale skiing ahead of you, is unbeatable. To enjoy perfect skiing and give yourself a topic of conversation for the après-ski, take a helicopter or use climbing skins to help you and use the services of a mountain guide who knows where the best snow is located.

Untouched terrain AND WELL GROOMED RUNS

t h e r e a r e a m u lt i t u d e of options open to you when skiing in and around Kiruna, regardless of your preferences — major adrenaline rushes or a calmer approach, at your own pace. There are times when speed and excitement are what you need, whilst at other times the silence and magnificent surroundings of the bare mountain are the order of the day. The less crowded lifts, without queues, give you downhill skiing with all flow and no wait.

From the town centre, the Kiruna mountins frame the horizon like a beautiful string of pearls.

The icing on the cake has to be Kebnekaise, Sweden’s tallest mountain situated right here in Kiruna. Climbing Sweden’s highest peak is a powerful experience, and you can enjoy guided tours in winter too!

Heading out on skis is easy. In some cases, you just have to put them on when you step outside your door because skiing terrain and tracks 6

are often located in such close proximity. From central Kiruna it’s a mere hour’s drive to get to the mountains and ski above the tree line. Perfect conditions await, with natural snow no matter what style you prefer — downhill or cross-country. If you wish you can ascend several hundred feet above sea level to the top of a mountain where you can survey the beautiful mountain landscape and feel as though you are on top of the world.

In Kiruna you can ski on natural snow almost all year round, from late autumn to Midsummer.

You can also ski beneath the northern lights and the blue Arctic light in midwinter, or in the blazing sunshine of spring and midnight sun just before the snow gives way to the next season.

We don’t have hills in Kiruna, we have mountains. A landscape of tall mountains that takes over where the dense forest landscape leaves off. There are lots of lakes too, which you can ski across in winter as they’re covered with thick ice and snow.

Clear views of the King’s Trail

The King’s Trail (Kungsleden), between Abisko and Hemavan, is one of the best ski trails in the world. An adventure more than 400 kilometres long which was started by the Swedish Tourist Association (STF) in the early 20th century. This trail offers a variety of fantastic mountain environments which stimulate the modern desire to discover.

The King’s Trail offers snow-clad peaks, warm spring sunshine, glaciers and the magical northern lights. A guided ski tour on historical ground is quite an experience.

Abisko is one of the places where you can start and end your ski tour. Trail crosses make the route safe for skiers, and the STF mountain huts are never far away. Lots of people discover the mountains through summit tours and ski touring on The King’s Trail, and the white peaks of Kebnekaise add extra appeal.

Björkliden is really a family-friendly place to ski. Families have more time to spend together, the ski system is clear and the slope is never far away no matter where you stay. In Björkliden, parents can safely hand their children over to the Lemming Club so that they can spend a few hours skiing down the slopes or on the cross-country trail — or simply enjoying a leisurely lunch together.

Björkliden is surrounded by some fantastic mountains, and this is where you’ll see the famous Lapporten from almost any location The little mountain village of Björkliden is both a charming ski resort that operates at a more tranquil pace and a place where you can still enjoy an adventure or two.

You can try dogsledding, snowmobiles, ice climbing — or why not head for a mountain peak in a helicopter for a bit of offpiste skiing? Don’t miss a trip to Låktatjåkko, where you’ll find the highest located restaurant in Sweden.

PRO CROSS-COUNTRY TRACKS Both the global elite and leisure skiers come to practise in Kiruna every year. Here they will find early snow together with well-prepared trails. These are for both skating and classic cross-country skiing, for elite skiers and hobbyists alike, right next to the Kiruna city centre. The ski trails are illuminated in the evenings and regularly maintained to provide the best possible skiing conditions. We offer an amazing 65 kilometres of cross-country trails, of which 30 kilometres are illuminated. Our season stretches from late October to late April.

THE MOVING, MESMERISING

Light Phenomenon a s t h e n o rt h e r n l i g h t s begin dancing across the sky, we pause and look up. It is difficult to avoid being seduced by the celestial display, even for those who grew up here and have seen this natural phenomenon since childhood. Sometimes, it is a tranquil experience, with slow, winding motions and sometimes the entire sky erupts in shapes and colours, moving at blinding speeds.

Being out in the forest or on a mountain under flaming curtains of northern lights is an experience you will never forget.

Throughout the ages, man has been in awe of the northern lights and tried to make sense of them through myth and legend. For the Sami, it was important to meet the northern lights with reverence. Whistling or singing, joiking, disrespectfully whilst the lights were showing was believed to be dangerous.

Today we know that the northern lights

appear as a result of charged particles emanating from the sun and falling against the outermost layer of the atmosphere. As the particles hit the Earth’s magnetic field they are drawn to the North and South Poles, and so-called polar light ovals are formed around the magnetic poles.

Kiruna’s location inside the northern polar light oval provides fantastic conditions for seeing the northern lights from September until late March.The proximity to unpopulated wilderness means that it’s easy to get to a place free from urban light pollution and experience the light display against a dark night sky. Many witnesses say that the northern lights cannot only be seen but also heard. Listen for yourself, the next time the northern lights dance in the sky!

— Photographing the northern lights is a fantastic way of experiencing nature. Set up your camera correctly, press the button and capture the northern lights. Sometimes your photos will be sharp, other times less so, but you’ll still have some stunning photos and memories of an experience you’ll never forget, says Anette.

— I want my pictures to portray the things I love the most — the Lapland light and, above all, the northern lights, which bring additional beauty to winter.

Peter offers photography courses on behalf of Canon, focusing on the northern lights and Sámi culture in Abisko and Kiruna. He works toghether with two other professional photographers. Peter took the photos for the book Aurora Borealis in Lapland and has had photos published in more than 100 magazines and books.

— My advice for success when photographing the northern lights is simple. Put the camera on the ground so that it’s completely still, or use a tripod, and set a long exposure.

Chad Blakley, a photographer specialising in the northern lights and owner of the company Lights Over Lapland and Visit Abisko, is based in Abisko and offers guided tours and photography courses.

— If you’re interested in fine-tuning your skills as a photographer and learning the fine details of astrophotography and photography in low light, we have just the course for you. We take on small groups, and we have access to a private conference room where I follow up on the participants’ photos every day, in between trips to take photos in the countryside, and give people advice and ideas to help them get the best out of their photos of the northern lights.

The art of photographing the northern lights

The Aurora Sky Station in Abisko is centred on what’s known as the “auroral oval” and is said to be the best place in the world from which to see the northern lights.

The oval zone above the poles, where the magnetic field lines are perpendicular to the surface of the Earth through the entire atmosphere, forms an auroral oval directly above the little mountain village of Abisko, to the north-west of Kiruna. The clear, clean air and almost cloudless sky present perfect conditions, and you can view the northern lights more or less every night.

The Aurora Sky Station is located at the summit of the mountain Nuolja. A cableway will take you to the top and once you arrive you will find a large outdoor terrace and an observation tower where you can study and photograph the northern lights and the starry skies. Inside the facility you will find an exhibition and a café. If you are looking for an all-inclusive experience, we recommend booking a four course dinner, inspired by Nordic cuisine and Swedish Lapland.

and playing in the snow, but we grown-ups can discover our inner child too when the snow crunches underfoot or when we trudge through deep, fluffy snow. In Kiruna, winter lasts for nearly half the year. With metre-deep, chalk white snow which lights up the dark season, both physically and mentally.

Vast amounts of snow are part of the Kiruna lifestyle. There are lots of things to do, and people have always been creative when it comes to living their lives — and finding adventure as well. Once the snow has settled, kick sleds are

the natural choice of many for getting around.

Alternatively, they strap on almost feather-light snowshoes to go walking in the forest, where the snow can be so deep that you’d sink up to your waist without them.

If you want to update your wardrobe and equipment to suit the Kiruna and mountain climate, there’s a good selection of shops selling suitable clothing and equipment for various outdoor activities. Most of our organisers of experiences and adventures can also provide warm clothing to help you enjoy your activities.

Going on a guided snowshoe hike is another different, yet accessible way to experience the white winter landscape. Eager howls can be heard as the dogs are having their harnesses put on and seconds later, when the sled pulls away, silence greets us in the forests and on the mountains. Paws against the snow, pulling us swiftly ahead as we sit comfortably under pelts and blankets in the sled. An experience truly capturing the interplay between animals and nature. We have a range of dogsled tours with different themes and lengths to choose from. How about a northern lights tour? Why not try mushing your own sled? An early morning

forests in the Abisko National Park to snowmobile tours with ice fishing, northern lights watching or an overnight stay in an igloo.

Staying overnight in an igloo is a surprisingly comfortable experience. The snow insulates against the cold outside, shielding you from wind and noise. Build your own igloo for the night, snow is a fantastic construction material and your guide will give you the tools and the knowledge needed. We can guarantee a truly cool experience.

Out into the wide blue yonder Your cheeks will be rosy after a speedy ride on a sturdy Icelandic horse in the snowy old-growth forest near the mountains. It is winter in Kiruna. You will experience calm and tranquility and you will have excellent chances of seeing the northern lights, reindeer, elk and other animals. Our friends at Ofelaš Icelandic Horses will teach you about Sámi culture during their riding tours.

Lots of guests decide to see the Kiruna forests and mountains from a snowmobile. Head out on daily guided tours with stops for brewing coffee over an open fire, join the exciting hunt for the northern lights in the polar night or enjoy spending the night at one of Kiruna’s many camps.

Down to the depths and up the walls Lying down on a reindeer pelt by a mountain lake in the warmth of the sunlight, reflected by the snow, to ice fish, is an activity with a silver lining in Kiruna. Maybe you will catch your dinner, arctic char, in the river or from the lake. Several tourism companies in Kiruna organise ice fishing tours.

Or why not try a slightly more unusual winter adventure. What about investigating a cave system created by the power of water? This popular activity is offered in Björkliden.

Ice climbing or learning to build a bivouac in the snow are other fun winter activities.

VISION FOR THE FUTURE KIRUNA Architects from all over the world were invited to take part in an architectural competition to design a new town centre for Kiruna, and a winning proposal has been selected.

The new Kiruna is to be characterised by a lively, yet safe city environment.

This means good lighting and a more compact city centre, something that Kiruna’s residents have been wanting for a long time. The new shopping street will begin at the eastern end of the city square. There will be shops and stores on the street level, on both sides of the street — the upper floors will house offices and apartments.

Two of Kiruna’s listed buildings — Hjalmar Lundbohmsgården and Kiruna Church — will be preserved during the transformation of the town.

Hjalmar Lundbohmsgården was built in 1895, this was where Hjalmar Lundbohm, the first LKAB managing director and founder of Kiruna lived. Parts of the building look just as it did when Lundbohm lived there; and works of art presented by many of the friends who visited there, including Prince Eugen, Anders Zorn, Albert Engström, August Strindberg and Johan Tuuri, together with a very unique atmosphere are still there to be enjoyed.

Kiruna Church was named Sweden’s most popular building in a public vote in 2001. This church, which is one of the biggest timber buildings in Sweden, will be dismantled piece by piece and rebuilt in the new Kiruna.

The church was built between 1909 and 1912 under the leadership of engineer, Bengt Lundgren, LKAB’s head of construction in Kiruna.

Architect Gustav Wickman and managing director Hjalmar Lundbohm also both played an active part in its construction.

Transformation of Kiruna — THE EMERGENCE OF A NEW TOWN

t h e t r a n s f o r m at i o n o f k i ru na has attracted lots of attention both in Sweden and abroad. Never before has such a big community been transformed like this because the land is needed for industrial purposes. Everything is focused on ensuring that the town and the mining industry can coexist in harmony.

Mining company LKAB has been mining around Kiruna since the early 20th century, which is when the town first came into being. LKAB is a limited company which is wholly owned by the Swedish government, and the group as a whole employs around 4,000 staff in 15 or so countries. The community was made up of three different areas around the turn of the 20th century, when Kiruna was established. The buildings were centred on the low mountain of Haukivaara, which had a relatively good local climate and was situated in a strategic location between the two mining mountains of Luossavaara and Kiirunavaara.

Communications in those days required people to live near to where they worked.

Kiruna was granted a town charter in 1948, and the town had already begun to expand in the 1940s as well. The town plan was the first of its kind to be established in the Nordic countries according to continental concepts. Instead of having a traditional grid plan, the Kiruna town plan is designed organically and also adapted according to the terrain.

The new Kiruna will be built for a variety of people. The people who already live here have to feel at home, people who’ve moved away should be encouraged to return, and new residents must feel welcome. The city transformation project has now entered its operative stage, where a Culture Centre, a bathhouse, emergency service facilities, schools as well as the blocks around the City Hall are under construction. The new City Hall, Kristallen, was the first building to be constructed in the new town centre.

FIND OUT MORE ABOUT THE TRANSFORMATION There are two exhibitions on the transformation of the town: LKAB’s exhibition is on display at the Folkets Hus, next to the tourist center in Kiruna, and there’s another in the town hall for the municipality of Kiruna. You can view and follow the transformation of the town there and see how the mine is spreading underground and the buildings above have to be vacated. You can also go on a guided tour to find out more about how Kiruna will undergo this exciting transformation – both Camp Ripan and Kiruna Storytelling Center are organising these.

We have some very popular guided tours for anyone who’d like to learn more about mining in the largest underground iron ore mine in the world. There is a direct bus from the tourist center, straight down into the mountain and to the exhibition mine at the LKAB’s Visitor Centre, 540 metres below ground. The guide explains all about modern mining and how it can persuade an entire town to relocate.

community area. The activities of the Sámi communities are regulated by the Reindeer Husbandry Act. Handicrafts, in Sámi Duodji, are also an important part of Sámi culture and reflect life in close harmony with nature. Throughout Kiruna you will find many unique examples of Sami arts and crafts such as the Jukkasjärvi Church organ, decorated with reindeer antler and Sámi motifs.

As a visitor to the region, you can experience and learn more about the Sámi culture with the Sámi companies and guides who work in tourism.

SÁMI COMMUNITIES IN KIRUNA

k i ru na i s a pa rt o f s á p m i and has been home to Sámi for many generations. The Sámi people are one of the world’s indigenous peoples, and for millennia they’ve lived close to nature. Although the Sámi lifestyle has developed over the years, their traditions and culture are still very much alive.

The dominant Sámi language here is Northern Sámi. The Swedish name Kiruna is derived from the Sámi word “Giron”, which means “grouse”. Sámi place names explain Sámi history and can be viewed as pieces in the puzzle of an area. They’re often linked with the appearance of the terrain and the value of the location in terms of reindeer husbandry and Sámi subsistence.

In Kiruna there is a genuinely living Sámi culture.

Reindeer herding is a strong bearer of culture, but it’s by no means the main income of all Sámi people.

It’s more common for whole families to help out with major events such as calf branding.

There are eight Sámi communities in Kiruna. A Sámi community is an economic association, and its members are Sámi people who herd reindeer within the

NIKKALUOKTA SARRI — In Nikkaluokta the Sámi family Sarri has been running tourist activities for several generations. They have a facility at the end of the road, not far from Kebnekaise.

Although times have changed, genuine Sámi traditions are still alive in the family, and knowledge of and a feel for the local environment are important to them.

NUTTI SÁMI SIIDA runs Márkanbáiki at the old market and assembly place that is origin for the village of Jukkasjärvi.

Here you will find reindeer, exhibitions, Sámi cultural information, crafts and arts, and Café Sápmi in a giant lávvutent where traditional Sámi lunch is served by the open fire.

Highly appreciated reindeer sledding tours as well as a unique cottage accommodation at Reindeer Lodge with reindeer on the doorstep.

ALLAS ACTIVITY — Stig Allas is a reindeer herder and guide and he offers popular northern lights excursions by snowmobile, including overnight stays.

SAPMILIFE — You are invited to Ida-Maria Svonni and her family to experience Sámi culture with all your senses. On a reindeer pelt inside the lávvu, Sámi tent, you can enjoy the crackling fire and listen to stories about Sápmi. Coffee and the traditional Sámi bread, gáhkku are made on the open fire.

PLENTY SHADES OF CULTURE Kiruna is a town rich in culture, which is how things have been since the town was founded just over a century ago. The Sámi and Tornedalian culture are apparent in cultural life in Kiruna and the hard work of the railway navvies still remains a foundation for both industry and communications. More than a century ago Navvies began building Malmbanan, the Iron Ore Line.

Around 500 kilometres of rails were laid with their bare hands.

The work was hard and risky, and they lived in rickety shacks.

The railway opened the door to tourism in Sweden’s northernmost mountains, and nowadays ore is still transported by rail from Kiruna to the ice-free ore port in Narvik.

Architecture, art and design have been and continue to be an important theme in Kiruna – buildings designed by Ralph Erskine, Sámi knives as utility items, but also works of art and ice art at the world-famous ICEHOTEL. Kiruna can be seen in popular culture as well. A number of films have been shot on location, such as the emotional French-Swedish thriller series Midnattssol (Jour Polair) that has been broadcast all over the world, as well as the Rebecka Martinsson series, based on Åsa Larsson’s popular books. Åsa Larsson is one of Kiruna’s most celebrated authors, she grew up in Kiruna and is known internationally for her award winning crime novels all set in Kiruna.

Keep your eyes open! You’ll sometimes find art where you’re least expecting it… You might, for example, find a green reindeer halfway up a wall on buildings in the town centre.

SHOP FOR LOCAL CRAFTS At Ateljénord in central Kiruna you will find a selection of crafts with a local character, everything from objects of everyday use to unique art handicraft. The professional craftsmen at Ateljénord work with arts and crafts in various materials such as wood, gold, silver, textiles, reindeer hide, metals, aquarelle painting and glass.

Another shop in the city centre featuring genuine crafts is the well-renowned Carl Wennbergs Sameslöjd that was established in 1907 by Franz Gustaf Wennberg, initially as a grocery store.

The Sámi often used their own crafts, such as knives and wooden cups, to pay for their groceries.

Over time, the store changed its profile and began specialising in selling Sámi crafts.

Near the tourist center, you will find the legendary photographer Sven Hörnell’s store where many of his famous photographs are sold, together with local arts and crafts. Do take the opportunity to watch their beautiful slideshow, a viewing can be booked at the store.

In the wooden Sámi hut at Nutti Sámi Siida in Jukkasjärvi you will find a craft and boutique section where traditional crafts are on display, made out of reindeer antlers and hides, amongst other things. There is a selection of both traditional and modern Sámi crafts and souvenirs.

At the foot of the mountain Kebnekaise, by the end of the road, is Nikkaluokta Sarri’s store.

There you will also find genuine Sámi crafts.

The latest addition to the range of craft boutiques in Kiruna is Love from Lapland. Here you will find fashion, interior decoration, jewellery and gifts from designers firmly rooted in the Arctic environment, expressing love for and knowledge of Lapland in each and every product.

SNÖFESTIVALEN (THE SNOW FESTIVAL) Come and celebrate snow, ice and all the activities and adventures that belong to the winter. The Kiruna Snow Festival is a winter event which takes place in January every year. The town is decorated with ice and snow sculptures for the festival.

We have game birds, berries ripened under the midnight sun of summer, fish that have swum in clean waters, mountain herbs and, not least, game – we recommend reindeer in particular. After all, enjoying a really delicious and well prepared meal with good company is a true delight. The taste of Swedish Lapland will add a little extra spice to your visit and provide unforgettable memories.

We enjoy the variation of the best ingredients, but that’s not all. The way in which we prepare and enjoy our food is an experience and an adventure. Suovas, lightly smoked reindeer, tastes absolutely incredi-

ble when cooked over an open fire out in the forest.

Juniper berries from the forest and pressed almond potatoes from Torne River Valley are ideal accompaniments. Or how about a char which you’ve caught yourself and grilled over glowing embers at a camp up in the mountain, under a clear, starry sky and the sparkling northern lights? An incredibly tasty dish.

We like combining nature and food in the Kiruna region, and we do it often. The town centre offers some real gems to delight both the mind and the tastebuds. Landströms serves everything according to season and availability, such as delicious breast of grouse or other local favourites. At Camp Ripan, the chef serves tasty dishes combined with drinks which perfectly match the ingredients.

Head for the mountain world and discover a range of culinary experiences. RESTAURANT NIKKALUOKTA, some 20 kilometres from the foot of Kebnekaise, serves Sámi Slow Food in a fantastic environment. In the heart of the mountains but still easy to reach by road.

The beautiful RESTAURANT ARCTIC EDEN serves food inspired by the region and Sámi culture. They use local ingredients and prepare them beautifully by bringing out the clean, natural flavours. And of course, if you have good food then you also need something good to drink, and their wine cellar is full of wines carefully selected to match the food they serve.

CAFÉ SÁPMI in Jukkasjärvi invites you to their large, cosy Sami hut where you can sit down by the fire and enjoy a traditional Sámi lunch with suovas and pot-boiled coffee served from a sooted pot.

Swedish fika, pastries, are also served. There’s a very special atmosphere here which will make your visit a truly incredible experience.

Two popular restaurants run by STF, and in beautiful locations in the heart of the mountain world of Kiruna, are Restaurant Kungsleden and Elsa’s Kitchen. Restaurant Kungsleden can be found at the Abisko mountain station. The mountain station is in the middle of a national park, and sustainability work is fundamental here. This means that they serve organic food. They use local ingredients that taste great and demonstrate a sense of responsibility for the beautiful countryside. At Elsa’s Kitchen at Kebnekaise Mountain Station, which was named after Elsa Göransson who worked there for nearly 30 years, Elsa’s great interest in mountains and people lives on. She created a pleasant oasis in the Lapland mountain world and today, more than 50 years later, people are still inspired by the cosiness and conviviality surrounding mealtimes, just as they were back then.

Restaurant Lapporten, at Hotell Fjället in Björkliden, doesn’t need art on the walls.

The huge panoramic south east-facing windows are like an advertisement for the resort. You’ll find mountain delicacies served here, along with excellent local ingredients such as reindeer, char and cloudberries.

Restaurant Lapplandia in Riksgränsen is located inside the hotel and presents a Northern Swedish à la carte menu created with passion using delicacies from the mountains, local ingredients of outstanding quality.

Specific drinks, particularly wines, are suggested for all dishes. The restaurant’s own bakery supplies everything from crispbread to pastries.

The inspiration for the hotel’s genuine, down-to-earth interior and design was taken from the Sámi culture.

In the mountain world, STF mountain huts are rarely far away when you follow King’s Trail, for example. Here, the host of the huts awaits you with a mug of hot lingonberry juice on arrival, offering you protection from the elements for one or more nights as you ski.
