Winter in eastern Swedish Lapland has many aspects. Around Christmastime and at the beginning of the year, the weather generally is sparkling clear and cold, with a few hours of daylight.

That doesn’t mean that the remainder of the day lies in darkness.

No, polar light radiates up from the horizon at night, and with a little luck, you can see the blue-green, sometimes violet aurora borealis dance across the canopy of heaven, play tag with the stars and tease the moon. White snowfields reflect the light, and you will discover that winter here is colourful.

You also will discover that our active, close-to-nature lifestyle promotes the best of health when the snow is deep as well. It is a matter of dressing right, layer upon layer. That is the recipe for feeling good in Winterland. When spring approaches, in March and April, the days become longer. Then winter-white cheeks turn longingly towards the warming sun. Have you hopped across the Arctic Circle, in the winter, when snow crunches under your shoes as it does when it’s cold? You have to give that a try when you visit the beautiful new Arctic Circle monument in Övertorneå. The highlight of the winter is the spectacular New Year Celebration ”We do it twice” at the Arctic Circle in the Juoksengi Arctic Circle village. It features hundreds of flaming cressets, an ice bar with drinks served in ice glasses along with a doubling up of spectacular fireworks. Yes, two fireworks displays because here the clock strikes twelve twice, with an hour interval. Book a wilderness experience with a guide: utterly in silence with a dog team or full speed ahead with a snowmobile. Did you know, by the way, that Sweden’s oldest organ is in Övertorneå church? Book time at the tourist office for a guided tour. And if you long for downhill skiing, you’ve come to the right place: here you can choose between Svanstein Ski and Ruskola Backe. HaparandaTornio To see what everyday life is like in HaparandaTornio, you have to try living there just as the local population does – with one foot in each country, Sweden and Finland. Defy time, passing back and forth across the border time zone, shopping in warm and attractive galleries and designer outlets in the commercial area that ties together the two neighbouring towns. Eavesdrop, and maybe you can perceive the difference between Finnish and the minority language known as Meänkieli. winter as cold and dark. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Especially if you are talking about the copious, snow-rich and brilliantly coloured winter that eastern Swedish Lapland offers. When Jack Frost rolls out a soft, fluffy and white blanket of snow, the way has been paved for all sorts of outdoor activities. Yes, because that’s how we live with winter here is eastern Swedish Lapland: outdoors. You have to take part in a snowshoe hike in silence, make your own way over untouched white surfaces – and with a little luck you might be accompanied. By the northern lights, the aurora borealis. Or maybe by a curious squirrel. You might not be the only one to leave an imprint: look for tracks of elk and reindeer. And when it becomes too arduous to break your own trail, you might proceed farther on the trail left by a snowmobile.

Almost as silent, but at significantly higher speed, is travel by dog team. Paws pounding the snow, wind on the cheek, trees whizzing by. Ah, what a mode of travel! You can glide on your own power, too, on cross-country skis. There are many kilometres of groomed trails here, some of which are even illuminated so that you can also ski when darkness falls. Follow the rhythmic beating of your heart and enjoy a sense of well-being in the clean, clear air.

I also have to comment on late winter/early spring, the period in March and April known in Swedish as “vårvintern”. The rays of the sun really start to warm up now, the days grow longer and water drips from roofs. The time to enjoy snow is running out because it soon will be only a memory. So take advantage of the chance to drive a snowmobile out on the spring ice, bore a hole and try ice fishing, jig (the thrill of a bite!), shovel a nice sofa in the snow and just enjoy the sun, preparing food and eating outdoors. Come along outside and have fun in the winter!

eastern Swedish Lapland. Perhaps that has to do with the fact that in days gone by the populations of the two river valleys were isolated, each on its own side of the mountain crest separating them. In those days the rivers were the transportation channels in both summer and winter and the obvious pantry yearround. Settlements and villages grew up around the rivers, subsequently developing into meeting places and communities. Completely different languages have developed along both of the river valleys.

By the river Kalix River, in Överkalix, Överkalixbondskan is one of the country’s most distinctive dialects. It differs markedly from the dialect spoken in the neighbouring municipality of Kalix. And in Tornedalen, Torne River Valley, a minority language known as Meänkieli, or “Torne Valley Finnish”, is spoken. It is closely related to Finnish. That’s fascinating, considering that only a few kilometres separate the two valleys. And in addition to these three languages, Swedish, Finnish and Sami also are spoken in the region.

The border culture has many different aspects, and at Tornedalen Museum you can learn more about all of the dramatic historical events that have left their stamp on life in the area. The churches in eastern Swedish Lapland are unquestionably worth

a tour of their very own. The church in Kalix is, in fact, Sweden’s northernmost medieval church. In the Övertorneå church you can see and listen to Sweden’s oldest organ. And you will clearly see that the region has had, and continues to have, exchanges in an east-west direction when you visit the orthodox churches in Överkalix and Haparanda.

Sauna culture is something of a religion of its own for eastern Swedish Lapland. Those who believed that there is only one way to bathe in a sauna have a lot to explore with us. Try your hand at distinguishing between an electric and wood-fired sauna, between a smoke sauna and a steam sauna.

And don’t miss allowing the whisk of birch twigs to bring your skin back to life in the heat. Now that you are here in winter, it’s obligatory to jump right out in the snow, directly from the sauna – without a stitch of clothing. Guaranteed rejuvenation.

Tornedalens museum The core collection exhibition at the Historical Museum of Torne River Valley in Tornedalen is titled “Encounter at the Boundary – our common river valley”. It tells about the roots of the people who live in the valley: why they came to the area and how they coped with life. In the exhibition you can see what archaeologists have uncovered about life thousands and hundreds of years ago, familiarise yourself with traditional livelihoods and hear how war has affected residents of the river valley. The history and stories are made accessible through artefacts, images, sound and films. The proximity of the boundary and its influence are at the fore of the exhibition in many different ways. The exhibition also addresses typical phenomena in the area that still are evident in daily life: cuisine, rock music, local identity, language and dialects.

Forest Hotel

We can unequivocally declare that what Svante Spolander in Kukkolaforsen does not know about saunas is not worth knowing. He was born and raised in Kukkola, in the heart of Tornedalen. Here the sauna is the absolutely indisputable mainstay of existence, the place where life begins, where life is lived and where it comes to an end. In Kukkolaforsen you can visit the Swedish Sauna Academy, which has as its motto “In sauna veritas” – in the sauna truth prevails. On sauna evenings that can be booked at the reception, you can open your senses and allow the steam from the sauna to rinse away your stress.

Follow the frozen Torneälven river northward and you will come to Pajala and Tärendö, the home district of cross-country ski champion Charlotte Kalla, where the Forest Hotel proudly stands by the ice of Tärendö älv. The hotel’s furnishings are inspired by the forest, and like many other places in the Torne and Kalix river valleys, taking a sauna is an important part of the culture. Did you know that the Lovikka mitten came into being by mistake?

The story of Erika Aittamaa reflects a bygone time when her children were growing in number and social services were poor. Knitting became a way to earn money. An order came in for really thick, durable mittens. Erika spun thick yarn and knitted two pairs of hefty mittens. The person placing the order was not pleased, maintaining that the wool had been destroyed. New attempts were made, and the wool was washed several times and carefully carded. The result turned out to be fantastic, and people soon began asking for the mittens. The year was 1892, and the classic Lovikka mitten had seen the light of day. You can see the world’s largest Lovikka mitten in the village of Lovikka in Pajala.

ply of wild fowl here, including ptarmigan and capercaillie. The flavours marry extremely well with berries that have been allowed to ripen under the copious midnight sun. Or why not let lingonberries, bilberries, Arctic raspberries or cloudberries serve as the sweet finish for a perfect meal?

Of course, you can’t miss out on the fish. In Torne River and Kalix River, the clear, free-flowing national rivers, salmon, grayling and whitefish swim. And bleak caught in the sea yield the exclusive, gold-shimmering Kalix vendace roe. Enjoy it with the classic accompaniments – look for it on restaurant menus in the area. Kalix vendace roe also is sold at the tourist office in Kalix for those who want to buy the delicacy to take home and share with loved ones.

Here in eastern Swedish Lapland, local produce is something of a legacy from the past, when many of the large farms in the fertile river valleys were self-sufficient. At Hulkoffgården and in Kukkolaforsen, both of which are mentioned in the White Guide, you can order local delicacies from forest, river and field, prepared in the traditional manner, seasoned with modern influences.

That fact that we find ourselves in a borderland also is reflected in our food preparation. People talk about a bread boundary between the rivers Kalix älv and Torne älv.

Explore the difference in taste between Tornedalen’s rieska cornbread and Kalix Älvdal’s klådda, which is made of wheat.

The squeak between your teeth when you chew coffee cheese (kaffeost) is something you have to sample. Coffee cheese is made from raw milk and rennet that is cooked, allowed to cool and then baked in an oven.

It is usually enjoyed in coffee (yes, it’s true!), and it squeaks so pleasantly between the teeth when you chew it. If you eat coffee cheese alongside coffee, it often is served with a little cloudberry jam as a condiment.

At Kukkolaforsen Restaurant, with its view of the frozen national river and Finland, you will enjoy Tornedal food traditions and local specialities. Whitefish are obtained here from the waves of the rapids, berries from forest hideaways and vegetables from farmers’ fields. They are ingredients in Kukkolaforsen’s bountiful Christmas smorgasbord or the sauna buffet set forth after the evening’s traditional sauna. After the food experience, you will stay in comfortable cottage flats situated like a beautiful pearl necklace along the frozen rapids. Kukkolaforsen’s crispbread and lingonberry rye bread are served with the meal and can be purchased to take home with you, along with the restaurant’s own cookbook, “Tornedalsk mat på Margits vis” (Tornedal food à la Margit).

Add a heap of chopped red onion. Top with a generous lump of vendace roe and garnish with dill leaves.

A magic night

We are 150 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle with Sara and Johan at Explore the North in Kangos, Pajala. Here, under the Arctic sky and deep in the wilderness, Sara and Johan have made a life for themselves.

–We live in an eldorado of natural phenomena and we want to share that with our guests, says Johan.

We follow Sara’s and Johan’s footsteps through the forest. Every exhalation looks like a small cloud as it meets the cold at 24 degrees below zero, but the cold doesn’t reach us underneath our three layers of clothing. A bit further on the forest ends and the bog starts, we see the lights from Aurora Domes, our accommodation for the night.

–Aurora Domes is our latest creation, says Sara and shows us into the dome. We are lost for words; the idea is as mad as it is brilliant.

In the centre of the dome there is a double bed and outside the transparent walls the wilderness continues as if we weren’t there.

–Many guests comes to us with a dream of experiencing the northern lights, explains Sara. We wanted to give them the whole sky.

There’s so much to discover up there.

–A moose passed here quite recently, interjects Johan and points to the tracks outside the dome. He smiles when he sees our surprise, –don’t worry, the moose prefer to observe you from a distance – and no, they would never tell on our guests.

There are many impressions, but now it’s more haste, less speed to the husky farm.

Johan runs through the instructions ahead of our expedition with the dog teams.

I stand on the sledge brake, releases the snow anchor and memorise the different commands as we wait for the starting signal.

In the sledge is my colleague and in front of us five Alaskan huskies and an adventure.

We’re off, the dogs’ eager barks turn into quiet pulling power and we make our way into the landscape. The moon is enormous and lights up the terrain. After a few kilometres, Johan raises his hand: the stop signal. Johan checks that all is well with the participants.

–You’re doing well but relax and you’ll stay warm, says Johan. I release the brake and Johan gives the thumbs up.

For the rest of the journey, I fill every cell in my body with impressions.

The nuances of the meeting of light and dark, the stillness and the landscape. I smile and feel the cold against my front teeth. Swedish Lapland really is magnificent.

Three hours have passed and Sara welcomes us to dinner. A big fire in the centre of the restaurant spreads warmth and creates a cosy feeling. As we satisfy our hunger, we learn that the chances of seeing the northern lights in the evening are good. We finish off with the steam from the sauna and make the walk through the forest.

Inside the dome it is warm. We update Instagram with pictures and greetings from our great location and quite soon we are in the middle of a spectacular light show. The northern lights dance across the Arctic sky in changing ranges of colours and we are overcome by something far beyond what words can describe.
