the small Arctic town 100 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle, in the heart of Swedish Lapland. The winter season has already started in November and World Cup skiers from several national cross-country teams flock here to churn up rival Marcus Hellners home track. We have amazing ski trails here in Gällivare. If you’d rather ski downhill, you can choose between 15 different slopes on Dundret, our mountain in the middle of town. To get to the top, which is 823 metres above sea level, you can choose the Dundret Express; an ultra-modern six seat lift that takes you right up to the top in less than four minutes.

Winter in Gällivare is long and glorious. During this dark period, there are many opportunities to see the spectacular Northern Lights dancing in the sky. To get away from the town’s street lights, you can take a ride out with Icelandic horses, sit comfortably in a sled behind enthusiastic workhorses or let strong sled dogs take you far out into the wilderness. From mid-winter darkness to sunny spring days. The beauty of early spring may send shivers down your spine and activities such as cross country and downhill skiing, snowmobile tours and ice fishing are popular. Enjoy the sun’s warming rays that bring out the first freckles while you grill sausages over an open fire out on the frozen water.

This small Arctic town is also home to two mines: the underground mine run by LKAB and the open pit mine Aitik. Mining is an important industry for our community and it has now reached the point where a whole community needs to be moved. Malmberget is being dismantled piece by piece and a new Gällivare is emerging.

is a place, location, environment or object that is so valuable and unique, it is a priority for all humanity to protect and preserve it. It can be of natural or cultural value, sometimes both. Laponia was designated a World Heritage Site called ”the Laponian Area” in 1996 by UNESCO for its considerable natural and cultural values.

Laponia is home to the Sámi, who have lived and worked in the area for thousands of years. The landscape has become a part of them and every brook, forest, hill, cliff, river and lake has a name. Reindeer have been in the region since the ice age and today reindeer herding is economically important and the foundation of the Sámi culture. There are nine different Sámi villages in Laponia where the Sámi live and work. They follow the reindeer herds on their seasonal migrational cycles. Although the area has been inhabited for a long time, traces of human beings are few. They live in and together with nature.

The nature in Laponia is magnificent. Here you will find high mountains, deep valleys, barren hillsides and lush forests. There is also the country’s largest cohesive marshland with virgin forest of spruce and pine, as well as wonderful mountains that take your breath away. Laponia is an area so unique that it is important for all humanity to protect and preserve it for future generations. Laponia is yours, ours and the world’s heritage.

Naturum Laponia — a place of stories

LAPONIA IS BOTH HOME AND WORKPLACE FOR THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE

First a glimpse of the sparse ancient forests, but come to the edge of the forest and the landscape suddenly opens up. The forests, rivers, lakes and mountains all meet. In the middle lies the nature center Naturum Laponia, a stone’s throw from the beach at lake Lánjas. This is the gateway to four national parks, two nature reserves and nine Sámi villages.

A naturum is a place for storytelling. There may be stories about the mountains on the other side of the lake or how the reindeer come here every spring. We tell you a little about what led to this large area being designated a World Heritage Site. Get to know the mountains, forests and marshes. Follow the four seasons and gain insight into why the reindeer are the centre of the Sámi culture.

Naturum Laponia is a newly built visitor center with an exhibition, café and a house designed by both architects and local craftsmen.

The Sámi are one of the world’s indigenous people, with their own parliament, flag and language. The Sámi area, Sápmi, stretches today, across four countries. In Swedish Lapland there are 32 Sámi communities that engage in reindeer herding within a given area.

For thousands of years, the Sámi have been nomads, moving along with the reindeer through the seasonal changes. Reindeer herders still live as nomads for part of the year. Traditional Sámi knowledge of how to live alongside nature without depleting its resources, has been passed down generation to generation.

Reindeer herding is the foundation of Sámi culture, but there are also many Sámi companies working with arts and crafts, design, music, tourism and Sámi food production.

LAPONIAENTRÉ JIELLEVÁRRE/GÄLLIVARE The Laponiaentré in Gällivare shows part of Laponia; Muddus/Muttos national park and nature reserves Sjávnja and Stubbá. The exhibition tells how people have lived for thousands of years and how the area has developed. These lands are also the workplace of the forest Sámi, when autumn is the busiest time. In the exhibition, you can follow the hunting, traditional slaughter and berry picking.

You will find the Laponiaentré in Gällivare, on the upper floor of the train station. There are three more Laponiaentrés, in Bårjås/Porjus, in Jåhkåmåhkke/Jokkmokk and in Huhttán/ Kvikkjokk.

In the heart of the Laponia World Heritage Site, in Stora Sjöfallets National Park with Sarek National Park nearby and Padjelanta and Muddus national park a stone’s throw away, you will find Stora Sjöfallet Mountain Center. Here there are hotel, apartments, hostel, camping and conference facilities with experiences for all groups and tastes. The popular restaurant offers well thought out meals with dishes based on natural ingredients from Laponia and the local region.

The environment here is magnificent and this is a great place to enjoy the opportunities winter provides. Off the beaten track, near the border of the the World Heritage Site, lies Saltoluokta. The STF’s mountain lodge has been here since 1912 and attracts people who wish to enjoy the mountains and be inspired by nature. The mountain lodge has seasonal opening times, offers several different types of accommodation, and the restaurant serves good food cooked with natural ingredients from the local area. If you meet grazing reindeer, please do not disturb them. If possible, take a detour around the animals. If you encounter a herd, sit down and wait until they have passed. In the spring, when the reindeer cows fawn, they are particularly sensitive to disturbances.

DID YOU KNOW THAT…

• The practice of reindeer herding has developed over thousands of years, from the hunt for wild reindeer, to the herding of today.

• ‘Sarv’, ‘vaja’ and ‘härk’ are Swedish words loaned from the Sámi language. A ‘sarv’ is an adult male reindeer, a ‘vaja’ is a female reindeer with calves and a ‘härk’ is a castrated and tame reindeer.

• There is a Sámi saying that the reindeer belong to the wind. Nature sets the rules and the reindeer herders are never completley in control of the size of their herd.

FAST PACED

winter adventures s n ow a n d w i n t e r i s e xc i t i n g i n g ä l l i va r e . The winters are long and the possibilities for winter adventures are virtually endless. The snow usually falls early and in November the slopes of Dundret open for fantastic downhill skiing. One could say that the winters in Gällivare are spread over three seasons. Even if the snow comes early, it is not unusual to find the region still covered up to the end of April.

Just after autumn comes the dark period that makes us yearn for warm blankets, lighting candles and the cosiness of Christmas. Saunas, lovely spa treatments, museum visits, Christmas dinner and wonderful winter activities such as dog sledding or cosy rides through the woods on a horse drawn carriage.

After the winter solstice, the light begins to slowly return and the cold period makes its entrance. At the beginning of the year it is not unusual to have temperatures as low as -35°C. During the cold winter nights, there are many chances to see the spectacular Northern Lights. Sometimes a small flicker among the stars, at other times the sky is filled with dancing green flames. As the days get brighter, clear days create a fantastic winter light.

Some of the winter’s most beautiful images are taken during this crisp cold period. The white plains stretch as far as the eye can see.

When the early spring arrives, the active winter in Gällivare begins. Ski tours, downhill skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing and kicksledding. The days become longer and the sun is warming. Which winter adventure are you ready for?

Silent and magical By horse and sleigh, ride through the beautiful winter landscape at the foot of Dundret. If you are lucky you might get a glimpse of Dunder Santa Claus — everyone knows that the real Santa lives behind Dundret in Gällivare. On the upper floor of the train station in Gällivare, you will find Laponia Visitor Centre Gällivare/Jiellevárre. Here is an exhibition about autumn, which is the most eventful season in Sápmi. Learn about the Sámi culture and be entranced at how the Sámi lived and worked in the area for thousands of years and how things have developed from then up to the present day.

The Visitor Centre exhibition is about a fifth of the size of the larger exhibition that can be found at naturum Laponia in Stora Sjöfallet. If you are unable to visit the Laponia World Heritage Site and the naturum to experience the magnificent mountain environment, we recommend that you visit the Laponia Visitor Centre in Gällivare. There are also Laponia Vistor Centres in Porjus, Jokkmokk and Kvikkjokk. www.laponia.nu

A journey through the history

Three cultures have met in Gällivare: Sámi, navvies and settlers. The three cultures have created an interesting history. The Sámi have lived and worked in the mountain areas for thousands of years. The navvies arrived as soon as mining took of when the ore railway line from Luleå to Narvik was completed in the late 1800’s. Also settlers came to the area following the ore rush. Today, Gällivare’s history is part of the local museum.

The museum can be found at the Central School, in the centre of Gällivare. You can buy souvenirs and local handcrafts here. In the same building you will also find a cosy café. www.gallivare.se/museum

The story about the mine The LKAB mining museum in Malmberget explains the history of mining from the past to the present day. Have a look at the equipment and tools from back in the days. Watch photos and read stories about the work in the mine.

Many of the different stones and mountain rocks unearthed in the mine over the years, are preserved here in glass display cases and it is difficult to not be amazed and fascinated by natures creation.

BIG RELOCATION PLANS

on the mountain Illuvaara, the hill that later became known as Malmberget. The ore mining that would enable a community to be born and grow. The large-scale ore mining began when the Ore railway line was completed and much larger quantities of ore could be moved than when reindeer caravans and sledges were used. The first ore train was loaded in 1888 and this was the beginning of the great ore rush that laid the foundation for how the entire ore field area looks today.

There is nothing new about the fact that expanding mining industries affect the environment. 40 years ago homes and other buildings had already been moved. But now in the present day, mining has become so widespread that we can see the end of Malmberget as a community.

Today LKAB’s iron ore mining is just north of the community, but the ore bodies lean in a southwesterly direction and affects the town. Parts of Malmberget have already been moved or demolished. There is a social transformation under way and it has affected the Municipalities residents for a long time. Many homes and public activities that today are in Malmberget will be relocated, for example elderly care homes, sports arenas and the high school. Since the 2000’s, the pace of alteration has increased significantly and Malmberget is now being decommissioned in phases and is scheduled to be completely phased out by 2032.

At the same time the neighbouring communities expand.

A new Gällivare in the making A comprehensive public dialogue and close contact with the local business community resulted in a vision for the new Gällivare: Gällivare should develop into a world-class arctic small-town.

The goal is a vibrant centre with more homes and activities. Secondary schools, an ice rink and entertainment venues as well as new elderly care homes that will disappear in the decommissioning of Malmberget will be built.

The new Gällivare has a closeness to nature and the mountains, and more life in the center.

Now construction cranes are on their way to build, amongst other things, a new residential area in Repisvaara, as well as more apartments in the center. Also the small community Koskullskulle, about ten kilometres from Gällivare centre, will grow larger due to the movement of complete buildings and the construction of new properties. www.gellivare.se/Nya-gallivare

HAKKAS TJAUTJAS The small village Tjautjas is located 30 kilometers north of Gällivare. To get there, you travel through Koskullskulle, along a rather crooked road with beautiful surrounding scenery. Then you get to the village, which actually is a dead end.

Tjautjas is special in many ways. It is located among the low mountains which on calm windless days, are reflected in the many lakes that can be found here. During winter, the lakes change to snowmobile tracks and from here you can follow the tracks to Kiruna. On the journey there you will come across the villages in Soutujärvi district.

Late spring in Tjautjas is a place for snowmobile enthusiasts. Do not miss the snowmobile competition ”ByaCupen”, a drag racing competition which takes place on the Tjautjasjaur lake (Jaur means lake). www.tjautjasik.se 12

Hakkas can be found approximately 50 kilometers from the town of Gällivare, south along road E10. Through collaboration and a strong community, a delightful district has been designed with activities all year round.

You can stay in the old school, which today is a community homestead. If you are lucky, you may wake up to the smell of fresh stone oven baked bread.

In March, the ‘Trekantsloppet’ annual ski race takes place — a cross-country race that goes between the villages of Hakkas, Sammakko and Ullatti. www.hakkasbygden.se

The easily accessible Soutujärvi district, in the middle of Malmfälten along road E10, consists of the villages Puoltikasvaara, Skaulo and Moskojärvi. Together, they organise enjoyable activities all year round.

Do not miss the Christmas market at Kyrkbacken at the end of November each year, or the festival ”Kaamosfirandet” in January, celebrating the darkness with music and shows. Soutujärvi district is also home to a number of companies offering high quality activities for example dog-sledding tours both short and long.

The area has both Lina and Kaitum mountain forests. These are links in the chain of nature reservations located along the mountain edge and dominated by vast pine forests and birches. www.soutujarvi.se

NATTAVAARA About 50 kilometers southwest of Gällivare is the scenic village of Nattavaara, which is actually two villages, Nattavaara and Nattavaara Village, with the Råne river acting as a natural divider.

A well-known attraction in the area is the 210 kilometre long Malmens road. A historic winter trail which acted as a transport road for ore. During this period it was used by reindeer caravans and sleds before the ore railway was completed at the end of the 1800’s. Today it is a popular ski, snowmobile and hiking trail.

Not far from Nattavaara is Pellokielas, one of the most powerful virgin forest reserves in Norrbotten with 500 year old pine trees.

Every time you make the coffee, you will be able to remember that moment you took a break, during that tour, far out in the wilderness.

Not just water

Comfort in the wilderness

Getting to Gällivare It is easy to travel to Gällivare. If you are travelling by plane, you can arrive at Gällivare airport which is located just ten minutes by car from the town centre. Alternatively you can arrive at Kiruna airport or Luleå airport and travel on to Gällivare by car, train or bus. If you travel by train or bus, you will arrive at the travel terminal in central Gällivare, just a few minutes walk from the square. If you drive by car to Gällivare you can drive using the E10 or E45.

Gällivare municipality is a large area and the distances between destinations can be relatively long. To the right you will see approximately how long it takes to travel by car in the region.

...the great ski party in April

On the 11th of April 1965, the first Dundret Runt took place. The background to the race was that Gällivare had been visited by the legendary ski teacher Göran Frohm who suggested holding races around Dundret. Said and done.

Today, skiers flock from afar to participate in the immensely popular Dundret Runt.

...when the balloons visit in February

Hover above the white winter landscape and experience a really high-flying winter activity.

During one week in February each year the Arctic Balloon Adventure is organised and Balloon teams gather from several countries here in Gällivare. Spectators are invited to take magical photos of the hot air balloons against the clear blue winter sky, and participants will enjoy an experience they will never forget.

When the ski season is over there is still some snow left here and there in wooded areas and perhaps on the slopes where the sun cannot reach. But what do we do with the very last snow? In Gällivare we have decided not to let any snow be wasted and have therefore arranged a really cool and unique contest.

...the Winter Market in March The Winter Market in Gällivare has been a beloved meeting place for a long time. For more than 200 years the Winter Market has symbolised that we are moving towards lighter days after a long and dark winter. It brings together traders from all over Sweden to sell spices, leather, meat, handicrafts and more. Look out for the warm clothes made of wool, Sámi handicraft and the extremely good and salty dried reindeer meat.

The Homestead area (Hembygdsområdet) in Gällivare gives a genuine feeling of history and culture. Here some of the oldest buildings in the municipality have been gathered to preserve them for future generations.
