24-hour sunshine spreads its warm light over mountains, flora, fauna and waterways. This is the Land of the Midnight Sun, tempting you with late nights and excursions around the clock. where saxifrage and anemone varieties grow in abundance by your tent where you stop for the night. Later on, as summer gives way to autumn, the countryside glows red, yellow and orange, just beneath the snow-clad peaks. Enticing and truly memorable contrasts.

The midnight sun shines over Kiruna from late May to mid-July, and we enjoy the light and live our lives outdoors as much as we can. We roast reindeer meat over open fires, steer boats through swirling rapids and hike along the unique King’s Trail, the main part of which is found here, in our destination. of a mining industry and a spaceport. From up high to down low – from Kebnekaise, the highest mountain in Sweden, to a mine a thousand metres below ground.

Kiruna is undergoing an exciting transformation.

The entire town is about to relocate, as the mine and ore deposits extend beneath the town centre.

Paths, trails and roads HEADING OUT INTO THE WILD

h i k i n g i s m u lt i d i m e n s i o na l . It offers something for your mind, and your body. Hiking along the King’s Trail in northernmost Swedish Lapland, you’ll experience some of the most beautiful things Sweden has to offer. Clear lakes where you can see deep, deep down, rivers and streams with water so clean you can just fill your cup and drink. Flora that allegedly made Carl Linnaeus himself rejoice during his ’Expedition to Lapland’ in 1732.

Tall mountains with snow-encrusted peaks provide a constant reminder of just how far north you are. In the deep valleys reindeer graze while eagles soar high above.

There’s hiking here for everyone – from the less experienced who enjoy stretching their legs for a few hours along clearly marked routes, to advanced weekly hikes where you bring your own tent through trackless terrain. The backdrop 4

to your adventure is powerful and varied: the fertile Abisko National Park and the Kebnekaise mountain massif. If you fancy a challenge, don’t miss the opportunity to climb the highest mountain in Sweden, with or without guide.

All this under the light of the never-tiring midnight sun. You can experience it in many ways, but the worldfamous Aurora Sky Station, with views over both Lapporten – the Laponian Gate – and the 70-km Lake Torneträsk, is perhaps the best of them all. Round off your experience with a typical local meal on the Nuolja mountain.

Head out on a hike that gets your legs working and gives your head a rest while your soul floats freely. Maybe stop for the night at one of the STF mountain huts, set at convenient intervals along the hiking trails. At some of the huts provisions are available and you can enjoy a nice, invigorating sauna.

THE NAVVY ROAD

Day trips to enjoy on your own

There are some fabulous trips that you can enjoy on your own, and you can choose any distance. The Midnight Sun Trail on Luossavaara mountain next to Kiruna is beautiful, offering views of both the mining town and the mountain range. Hiking from Björkliden to Låktatjåkko Mountain Lodge is another gem – or why not head out to Lake Rissajávri, one of the clearest lakes in Sweden, right in the middle of the beautiful and mystical Kärkevagge Valley.

Cycle, hike or run along the old construction routes used by the navvies. They run from high mountains via deep valleys all the way down to the Norwegian fjord. Navvies began building the railway known as Malmbanan, the Iron Ore Line, more than a century ago. This paved the way for the hospitality industry and nowadays ore is still transported by rail from Kiruna to the ore port in Narvik in Norway. The Svarta Björn (Black Bear) hike is a popular tradition where people pay tribute to the legendary navvy cook with a hike along the Navvy Road. This route offers comfortable accommodation and places where you can enjoy tasty food.

The Midnight Sun Trail

Start at Camp Ripan and finish at the parking space by the Loussa ski slope after having climbed the city mountain Luossavaara, or the other way round. The hike is 4.3 km and takes 1.5-2.5 h.

Kärkevagge and Rissajávri (The Troll Lake)

Beautiful hike through a fairytale landscape featuring barren mountain terrain and flowering meadows. The hike starts at Låktatjåkko staging post and is 12 km long (about 5 h).

The Navvy Road to Rombaksbotn

Hiking from mountains to fjords along the old navvy construction road.

If you start in Björnfjell it’s 13 km one way, and from Katterat 7 km.

Three-Country Cairn

The hike from Kilpisjärvi through the Malla National Park to the Three-Country Cairn is 11 km one way.

Combined with a boat trip it can be shortened to 3 km.

Láddjujávri

Easy hike, nearly 6 km (about 1.5 h) one way, that takes you from Nikkaluokta to the glacier lake Láddjujávri with a view of the Kebnekaise massif. Savour a reindeer burger at Enok’s Restaurant or take a boat trip on the lake.

EXCITING, WET AND OUT OF THE ORDINARY

Mikael Forsén runs the company Kiruna Nature, offering dog sledding in summer. Get to know the happy, friendly dogs and find out more about them.

These dogs love to work and start howling and barking eagerly before suddenly falling silent when they’re told to start running. We’ll travel on a cart behind a team of 16 keen dogs, and the 8-km trip finishes with fireside refreshments on the banks of the Kalix River.

“People really enjoy our trips because they offer genuine experiences up close and personal with animals and nature in an authentic and respectful way, and I think that’s important,” says Mikael Forsén.

The company also offers fishing trips in flowing water that are suitable for both beginners and experienced fishermen.

Dog sledding without snow

VAST FISHING WATERS There are almost infinite possibilities in the Kiruna region if you enjoy fishing: rushing streams, tempting lakes with arctic charr, huge grayling waters, perfect pike waters and unregulated salmon rivers. The ancient taiga forest stretches from coast to mountains, a pine forest providing all kinds of fishing waters to explore.

One of the advantages of the area is that there are plenty of forgotten places just waiting for you to visit. Book a flight to Råstojaure where you can enjoy some exclusive arctic charr fishing, or maybe you’d be happy

just travelling a few kilometres outside central Kiruna, settling down with your fishing rod on the banks of a river. ”The mountain region has always attracted sport fishermen. Adventures such as visiting the caves of Björkliden or glacier hiking on Kebnekaise are sure to impress. Or perhaps a visit to Nutti Sámi Siida, to learn more about Sámi culture, feed reindeer and enjoy northern-style coffee by the banks of the Torne River. Stand Up Paddle.

Exciting times centring on the Torne River A range of ICEHOTEL summer activities, offering fun and scenic adventures, are based at Jukkasjärvi Homestead on the banks of the beautiful Torne River. The low and high rope courses at Challenge Park provide challenges at various levels. If you prefer quieter activities you could always try a trip on a riverboat with a guide who’ll tell you all about the village’s 400 years of history and show you the Torne River Valley and Sámi collections at the Old Homestead Museum. SUP, Stand Up Paddle, is easy to learn. The talented guides will help you master the technique to stand up and paddle your surfboard.

Gliding along the crystal-clear waters of the Torne River at a leisurely pace is a fantastic experience. Or you can choose to go faster and try whitewater rafting instead.

Creating your own ice sculpture when you visit ICEHOTEL is a must, so come on – give your creativity free rein! You can also visit the ice warehouse, where next winter’s hotel is sat waiting in the form of thousands of blocks of ice. Or try biking through the forest and countryside around Jukkasjärvi – a great adventure in almost untouched nature along forest paths and tracks.

Transformation of Kiruna A NEW TOWN EMERGING

is attracting attention both in Sweden and elsewhere – never before has such a large community undergone this kind of transformation. The town has to be moved because mining is deforming the land. As a result, parts of Kiruna have to be rebuilt elsewhere.

Kiruna as a community came into being in the early 20th century when mining began in earnest. The community was made up of three different areas when Kiruna was established.

The buildings were centred on the low mountain Haukivaara, with a relatively favourable local climate and a strategic location between the two mining mountains Luossavaara and Kiirunavaara.

Communications in those days required people to live near to where they worked.

Kiruna was granted a town charter in 1948, and the town began to expand in the 1940s as well. The town plan was the first of its kind to be established in the Nordic countries, based on continental concepts. Instead of a traditional grid plan, the Kiruna town plan is designed organically and adapted according to the terrain. A new Kiruna will now be taking shape, and all sights are set on the future. This community will meet people’s t h e t r a n s f o r m at i o n o f k i ru na

everyday needs, just as it’s always done. Everything is focused on ensuring that the town and mining industry can develop and coexist in harmony.

That was how it was in the beginning, and it’s still the case now that the mining company LKAB, employing around 4,000 staff in 15 or so countries, continues to develop its activities The transformation of the town has now entered an operational phase where plans and decisions will be put into practice. Two major architectural competitions have taken place: one for the new town centre and one for a new town hall. The development plan for the future town centre is complete, and the inauguration ceremony for the new Kiruna town hall has taken place. The aim is for the new town centre, with a shopping street, to be completed within five years. The new Kiruna will be built for a variety of people.

Those who already live here have to feel at home, and returning as well as new residents must feel welcome.

A central hub in the new Kiruna The aim is to attempt to manifest the pride people take in the town by moving and preserving a number of unique buildings and constructing new ones along the same lines. The town hall – which is appreciated and frequently visited by the locals – can’t be moved, and that’s why a new town hall is being built in Kiruna.

Architects from all over the world were invited to take part in an architectural competition to design a new town centre for Kiruna, and a winning proposal has been selected. 56 teams of architects from all over the world entered the competition to design a new town hall. The purpose of the competition was to come up with a high-quality proposal to use as a basis for a new town hall to be built in the new centre of Kiruna.

The new town hall is expected to be completed by the end of 2018.

EXPERIENCE HOW A TOWN IS TRANSFORMED

The future in space The Esrange Space Centre is situated just over 40 km north-east of Kiruna.

SSC (Swedish Space Corporation) uses it to launch sounding rockets and stratospheric balloons for research purposes. There’s also a major station for satellite communication here. The base isn’t open to the public, but there’s a small visitor’s centre presenting the activities at Esrange and Swedish spacerelated work.

There are two exhibitions on the town transformation: LKAB’s exhibition is on display at the Folkets Hus, next to the tourist office in Kiruna, and there’s another one in the Kiruna Town Hall. Here you can view and follow the transformation – how the mine is spreading underground and how the buildings above have to be emptied. You can also take a guided tour to find out more about how Kiruna will undergo this exciting transformation. Both Camp Ripan and Hjalmar Lundbohmsgården organise tours.

There are some very popular guided tours for those who’d like to learn more about mining in the biggest underground iron ore mine in the world. Experience the contrast between midnight sun and absolute darkness several hundred metres below the surface. We take a bus from the tourist office and drive straight down into the mountain and the visitors’ mine at LKAB’s Visitor Centre, 540 metres below ground.

A guide will explain all about modern mining and how it can cause the relocation of an entire town.

Many nuances

A YOUNG TOWN WITH A DYNAMIC CULTURAL HERITAGE

k i ru na i s a t ow n rich in culture, and this is how it’s been since the town was founded just over a century ago.

There is a vivid Sámi culture and unique art treasures, and the hard work of the railway navvies is still present as an important part of industry and communication. The culture of the Torne River Valley is also a clear feature of cultural life in Kiruna.

Kiruna is part of Sápmi and has been home to Sámi people for many generations. The Swedish name Kiruna is derived from the Sámi word giron, which means ptarmigan. Sámi place names explain Sámi history and can be viewed as pieces in the puzzle of a region. They’re often linked to the nature of the terrain and the value of the location in terms of sustenance.

Navvies began building Malmbanan, the Iron Ore Line, more than a century ago. Around 500 kilometres of rails were laid without the use of 10

machinery. Their hard work was a prerequisite for the development of mining, and the navvies worked under strict time pressure and simple conditions. The railway also paved the way for the hospitality industry in Sweden’s northernmost mountains, and nowadays ore is still transported by rail from Kiruna to the ore port in Narvik.

The memory of the navvies and people who worked for the railway more than a century ago lives on. Svarta Björn (Black Bear) in particular, who cooked for the navvies, is remembered and celebrated every year with a walk along the Navvy Road.

Architecture, art and design have been, and continue to be, an important theme in Kiruna – buildings designed by Ralph Erskine, Sámi knives as utility items, but also works of art, and ice art at the world-famous ICEHOTEL. Kiruna is a cultural palette and a work of art painted in beautiful colours.

Several cultures meet in the Kiruna region.

The largest Sámi language here is Northern Sámi, and many Sámi people are working hard to ensure that their culture is a visible, selfevident part of the community.

Reindeer herding is a strong bearer of culture, but it’s by no means the main occupation for Sámi people. It’s more common for entire families to help out with major events such as calf branding. Handicraft, Sámi Duodji, is also an important part of Sámi culture and reflects life in close harmony with nature. As a visitor to the region, you can experience and learn more about Sámi culture through Sámi companies and guides who work in the hospitality industry.

The Sámi people are one of the world’s indigenous peoples, and for millennia they’ve lived close to nature. Although the Sámi lifestyle has developed over the years, their traditions and culture are still very much alive.

There are eight Sámi communities in Kiruna.

A Sámi community is an economic association, and their members are Sámi people who herd reindeer within the community area.

The activities of the Sámi communities are regulated by the Reindeer Husbandry Act.

Welcome to Sápmi – the land of the Sámi

Summer, gæssi, is the time when reindeer herders brand their calves. The calves born in early spring, in May, must be branded so people know who they belong to. This is a wonderful and exciting job. Gæssi is the warmest season, which is why calf branding often takes place under the midnight sun, during the coolest part of the day. The reindeer are often herded by dogs or helicopter down to a reindeer enclosure in the forest, where they’re gathered, separated and branded. After branding, the calves and adult reindeer are let loose again. They often run back to the mountains, where there are fewer mosquitoes, and they can enjoy life on the verdant summer pastures.

SHOPPING FOR LOCAL CRAFTS Ateljénord in central Kiruna presents a range of local crafts, with everything from utility items to unique works of art. Ateljénord is made up of craft professionals from the Kiruna region.

They work with arts and crafts using a variety of materials such as wood, gold, silver, textiles, reindeer skin, wrought-iron, watercolours and glass.

Another shop in the centre of town that sells authentic crafts is the historic Carl Wennbergs Sameslöjd, opened in 1907 by Franz Gustaf Wennberg as a supermarket in the mining town Kiruna.

The Sámi people often paid for their goods with their own crafts, such as knives and cups. The shop began to sell more and more Sámi crafts over time, until it eventually became a specialist shop selling Sámi arts and crafts.

By the tourist office, you’ll find the shop of legendary photographer Sven Hörnell,

where you can buy several of his famous photos as well as other local arts and crafts. Take the opportunity to enjoy a stunning slideshow that you can ask for in the shop.

In Jukkasjärvi you’ll find Nutti Sámi Siida in the old Sámi marketplace that became the village of Jukkasjärvi.

Reindeer graze here, and there are exhibitions and information about the Sámi culture and way of life. There’s a craft area and shop in the wooden hut where traditional handicrafts are on display, including reindeer antlers and skins. A range of both traditional and modern Sámi crafts and souvenirs are on sale here.

Nikkaluokta Sarri’s shop is located at the foot of Kebnekaise, where the road ends. This shop sells genuine Sámi crafts dating back to the ancient history of Sápmi.

Experiences

DURING THE COLOURFUL SEASON

it’s hard not to notice

when summer starts to give way to autumn. The air becomes cooler and forests and mountain slopes are painted in dramatic colours.

The scents change, and unripe berries turn into fruit bursting with flavour thanks to their intensive ripening under the midnight sun. Many people consider this the best time to be out and about in the forest and countryside.

Besides the riches offered in the form of lingonberries, blueberries and cloudberries – the gold of the marsh – a kind of calm also settles over the countryside. Maybe it’s because everything is preparing to hibernate. Chilly nights alternate with days when you can still feel the sun on your skin.

And you’ll definitely admire the splendour of nature a bit more when you know this might be your last chance to hike from cabin to cabin on a trail or go biking outdoors.

There’s a major chance that you’ll experience the strongest, most beautiful northern lights in autumn. When darkness begins to grow, before the white snow settles on the ground and the cold gradually begins to creep back into this area 200 km above the Arctic Circle, the northern lights and the stars take over the heavens.

Being out hiking in the high mountains where there’s absolutely no artificial light at all, or taking a chairlift up to the Aurora Sky Station on the Nuolja mountain in Abisko an autumn evening under the northern lights is an experience you’ll never forget.

Or maybe you’re in the forest, by a river with a fire going. No matter where you watch the show, to see the northern lights is a moving experience – as it’s been since time immemorial.

“I want my images to portray the things I love the most: the unique light and the northern lights, adding an extra dimension to the nature up here.” Peter offers photography courses on behalf of Canon, focusing on nature, light and Sámi culture in Abisko and Kiruna.

Chad Blakely is a photographer specialising in the northern lights and owner of the companies Lights over Lapland and Visit Abisko. No other place in the mountains is associated with painting in quite the same way as Abisko. Magnificent views combined with fantastic light have made this area famous for its artistic qualities. In the early 20th century, Abisko was a hub for much of the Swedish art elite. When STF invites people to a one-week watercolour course, Lars Holm from Gerlesborgsskolan, one of Sweden’s most popular watercolour teachers, is in charge. This course will teach you more about the distinctive nature of painting watercolours, no matter what level you’re at.

Here in the heart of Sápmi is where you’ll have the opportunity to get up close and personal with reindeer, the proud companions of the Sámi people, entering their enclosure to feed them. At the same time, you’ll learn more about the Sámi, the indigenous population of FennoScandia, and their past and present way of life. You’ll also be invited to try the tasty Sámi national dish suovas, lightly-smoked and salted reindeer meat fried over an open fire in a traditional tent and served on Sámi bread, gáhkku. We also visit Jukkasjärvi church and the spot where the world-famous ICEHOTEL is recreated every winter.

STF Abisko Mountain Station, June 24. Dancer Fanny Kivimäki from Kiruna comes home to the amazing Arctic to dance around the maypole. Daniel Wikslund, Sweden’s northernmost national fiddler and known from the TVdocumentary ’The Sauna Ballet’ accompany her on the violin. Fjällräven Classic Nikkaluokta–Abisko, August 5–7. 110 km of adventure, combining mountain hiking with a festival. This route will follow one of the most popular hiking trails in the Swedish mountains. Come and meet Sápmi

August 19–20. A two-day mountain marathon with orienteering in sub-arctic surroundings for teams of two with an overnight camp on the mountain. Three options: Medium, Large and Extreme. The tracks for Extreme vary between 70 and 90 km and the climb between 4,000– 6,000 metres. The number of teams admitted is limited to around 100, out of concern for the environment and the reindeer husbandry. The experienced organiser IFK Kiruna promises a high-quality, friendly atmosphere.

The beautifully designed restaurant was inaugurated last winter and the exciting architecture is worth a visit in itself.

Camp Ripan’s White Guide classified RESTAURANT RIPAN combines Swedish, Sámi and Torne-Valley Finnish culture. The chef invites you along on a culinary journey of flavours, colours and shapes from Swedish Lapland. Most of the ingredients are local, and each dish comes with a story of its own – you can find out where the reindeer grazed and where the fish was caught. Two popular restaurants run by STF in beautiful locations in the heart of Kiruna’s mountain world are Restaurant Kungsleden and Elsa’s Kitchen. Restaurant Kungsleden is found at the mountain station in Abisko. The mountain station is in the middle of a national park, and sustainability is fundamental here. This means they serve ecological food. They use local ingredients that taste great and also demonstrate a sense of responsibility for the beautiful nature. At Elsa’s Kitchen at Kebnekaise Mountain Station, named after Elsa Göransson who worked there for nearly 30 years, Elsa’s great interest in the mountains and their people lives on. She created a pleasant oasis in the Lapland mountain world and today, more than 50 years later, people are still inspired by the mealtime geniality and conviviality, just like it was back then.

Restaurant Ebbes Kök in Katterjokk serves food and drink with fantastic views over the mountains: Vassitjåkka mountain in the foreground and Vassijaure lake extending towards the north. How about fresh pasta with creamy suovas (lightly-smoked reindeer steak), chanterelles and lingonberries?

There are all kinds of options to choose from when it comes to spending the night in Kiruna. Combined with the various adventures that await you, your accommodation can also be an excellent experience.

If you want to stay somewhere central in Kiruna, Hotel Scandic Ferrum is a good choice. Everything you can expect from a city hotel awaits you here. Their beautiful lounge, ’Solsidan’, is a great place to meet up with friends, and Solsidan moves out onto the terrace with the spring sunshine, offering views of the entire Kiruna mountain range.

At Camp Ripan, just outside central Kiruna, exteriors and interiors have been 18

created with care and respect. The cabins are comfortable and of hotel standard – private little oases close to everything you might need. Björkliden offers many different kinds of accommodation: accommodation for families, for groups of friends, or discerning log-cabin enthusiasts. The views of the Laponian Gate are captivating and there are lots of things to do – the golf course is absolutely stunning.

You can enjoy comfortable and practical accommodation at Katterjokk Apartments close to the Norwegian border. The apartments are spotless, and all have their own kitchen and bathroom.

Katterjokk Tourist Station, run by the Swedish organisation Friluftsfrämjandet is just a stone’s throw away and consists of two buildings: a main building with accommodation and a building with reception, shower and sauna.

Along the King’s Trail between Abisko and Nikkaluokta there are five pleasant self-catering mountain huts in beautiful locations and within comfortable hiking distance of one another. STF’s hosts help you settle in and give you good advice and mountain tips. The hut sites in Abiskojaure, Alesjaure and Sälka have shops where you can stock up on supplies during your hike. You can hike with a light rucksack thanks to these huts and mountain shops. In summer, you can just pack a set of sheets (no sleeping bag), quilts/blankets are available in the huts. In Abiskojaure, Alesjaure and Sälka you can also enjoy a refreshing wood-fired sauna – a very welcome way of relaxing after a whole day out in the mountains. The shared guest kitchens are natural meeting spots in the mornings and evenings, and make for fun times. You have every chance of making new friends during your hike!

Arctic Gourmet Cabin.

LANNAVAARA LODGE is a peaceful, homely, quality place to stay. The lodge is made up of five apartments of various sizes, inspired by the seasons and Sámi culture. Enjoy the beautiful views and experience the peaceful silence.
