First and last with snow in Gällivare? like a glistening diamond,

Gällivare glitters in the winter dark, warm and welcoming. The small Arctic town literally has both feet in the mountain world. The town even has a mountain of its own, not far from the town centre, the beloved Dundret, famous for being blessed with snow early in the season. World Cup skiers from many national cross-country teams gather here in early November to exercise on the home grounds of their competitor Marcus Hellner – whilst downhill professionals pursue hundredths of seconds on the well-prepared slopes. You could say that this marks the beginning of the active winter season here in Gällivare.

A season that actually lasts as long as six months, until late April or even early May. Explore the contrasts between midwinter and the depths of the polar night with its Northern Lights, and the long, crystal clear spring days, bathed in sun. Go and explore the truly marvellous countryside that surrounds Gällivare. Why not visit the unique Laponia World Heritage Site, a cultural landscape cultivated by the Sámi people who have lived and worked here for centuries.

By the way, did you know that Gällivare is a mining community? The mining company LKAB have mined for iron ore since the late 19th century and the community always changes and develops in symbiosis with the mine. We understand that you might raise your eyebrows when you encounter a house on wheels, but for all of us who live here, it is completely natural to move houses when the mine grows in size.

During the winter, Gällivare hosts several large events. Don’t miss the Santa Winter Games in late November, where santas from all over the world compete in a multitude of sports. You could also challenge friends, family or colleagues to the Dundret Runt cross-country ski run around Dundret, a perfect incentive to keep in shape during winter.

The best way to enjoy winter and early spring in Laponia is by cross country ski tours. We recommend touring in day-stages, together with a guide. Then, you will get help with getting water, cutting wood, cooking and everything else that is part of everyday life in the outdoors.

There are old forests, glaciers and marshes as big as oceans. Laponia is an area so unique that it is important for all of humanity to save and protect it for forthcoming generations. Laponia is your, our and the whole world’s heritage.

A World Heritage Site is a place, locality, environment or object that is so unique that it is important for all of humanity to save and protect it. It can be natural or cultural values, sometimes both. Laponia is one such combined World Heritage Site.

The terrain is saturated with forests, glaciers, massifs and a landscape where the traces of the people that have lived there for millennia are almost undetectable. Since the last ice sheet melted, people have lived in the area that is now the Laponia World Heritage Site. Every brook, forest, hill, rock, river and lake has a name. People, animals and plants have adapted to extreme contrasts between wind and lee, bare ground and snow, light and dark, warmth and cold.

Everything here is in constant motion and change.

LAPONIA IS BOTH HOME AND WORKPLACE FOR THE INDIGENOUS PEOPLE

If you meet grazing reindeer, please do not disturb them. If possible, take a detour around the animals. If you encounter a herd, sit down and wait until they have passed. In spring, when the reindeer cows fawn, they are particularly sensitive to disturbances. Do you have a dog with you? Make sure to keep it on a leash, and keep it from barking.

In the borderland between art and handicraft

DID YOU KNOW THAT…

Duodji is Sámi umbrella term for ‘creation’. Sámi crafts have involved creating all clothes and utility objects needed in everyday life. Everything from leather shoes for the children to canvas and poles for the mobile tents.

The reindeer and the birch tree provide most of the materials used for duodji. Hide and fur, bone, horns and sinews are taken from the reindeer. The wood, bark, roots and gnarly growths of the birch are used in a variety of everyday objects.

The duodji of today is alive and evolving, just as it always has been. Naturally, the aspect of utility remains, but young Sámi artists and craftsmen are constantly exploring new styles and uses for duodji. Sámi artisans of today work in the borderland between art and craft.

You can find duodji in many shops and boutiques in Gällivare – make sure you take something home as a souvenir.

• The practice of reindeer herding has developed over thousands of years, from the hunt for wild reindeer, to the herding of today.

• ‘Sarv’, ‘vaja’ and ‘härk’ are Swedish words loaned from the Sámi language. A sarv is an adult male reindeer, a vaja is a female reindeer with calves, and a härk is a castrated, tame, reindeer.

• There is a Sámi saying that the reindeer belong to the wind. Nature sets the rules and the reindeer herders are never completely in control of the size of their herd.

The Sámi are one of the world’s indigenous peoples, with their own parliament, their own flag, and their own language. The Sámi area, Sápmi, stretches today, across four countries. In Swedish Lapland, there are 32 Sámi communities that engage in reindeer herding within a given area.

For thousands of years, the Sámi have been nomads, moving along with the reindeer through the seasonal changes.

Reindeer herders still live as nomads for part of the year.

Traditional Sámi knowledge of how to live alongside nature without depleting its resources, has been passed down from generation to generation.

Reindeer herding is the foundation of Sámi culture, but there are also many Sámi companies working with arts and crafts, design, music, tourism and Sámi food production.

Experience the culture through some of the many Sámi attractions in the region, or visit the Ájtte Mountain and Sámi Museum in Jokkmokk.

– A SMALL PART OF SOMETHING GREATER Naturum Laponia is the newest nature visitor centre in Sweden. It is a gateway to four national parks, two nature reserves and nine Sámi communities. You will find Naturum Laponia on the cape Viednásjárgga near Stora Sjöfallet. By the edge of the forest, where the ground lowers, a grand landscape lies ahead and the Naturum Laponia is fully visible on the shore of Lake Lána.

Come here to learn about what Laponia is, and why this area is a World Heritage Site. Get to know the mountains, the forests and the marshes. Follow the changes of the seasons and learn why the reindeer are at the centre of Sámi culture.

Every place carries memories. During your visit to Naturum Laponia, you will leave yours, and become part of Laponia.

In addition to the Laponia Visitor Centre, there are four Laponia Entrances, inspiring you to visit the World Heritage Site and giving you a glimpse of what Laponia is all about. At the railway station in Gällivare, you will find the Laponia Entrance, Jiellevárre/Gällivare. Here, parts of Laponia, Muddus/Muttos National Park and the Sjávnja and Stubbá nature reserves are on display. The exhibition tells the story of how man has lived here for thousands of years and how the area has developed to this day. These lands are also where the Forest Sámi work. The autumn is the most eventful season. You can experience the hunt, sarv slaughter and berry picking.

There are three other Laponia Entrances: in Bårjås/Porjus, in Jåhkåmåhkke/Jokkmokk and in Huhttán/Kvikkjokk.

and winter, for real. The fact is that we aim to be the first in Sweden to have our ski trails ready. As early as November, the ski season starts on the World Cup tracks at Hellner Stadium. As soon as Jack Frost has turned nature white, the possibilities are endless for those of you who want to find your own trails.

In Gällivare, the snow remains for a long time, until early May. This means that we can guarantee you a long, exciting winter with all kinds of activities. The mountain Dundret sits as the crowning glory, near the city centre. This is a hub for all kinds of ski and snow adventures: snowshoe walking, cross-country and downhill skiing, and a snow park where you can practice your tricks. There are also several competitions during the season, for professionals and leisure skiers alike.

If you are looking for more alpine surroundings, you will love the genuine, cosy mountain lodges at Saltoloukta and Stora Sjöfallet. Both are less than two hours by car from Gällivare and perfect places to start an unforgettable ski excursion into Sarek or Laponia. g ä l l i va r e k n ow s s n ow

Don’t forget to turn your eyes skyward when you visit Gällivare in the winter. With a bit of luck, patience and clear skies, there is a good chance that you will get to see the magical Northern Lights. Let yourself be fascinated by the flaming green veils floating in the dark skies. Go on one of the many different Northern Lights tours that are offered: by snowmobile and sledge, on horseback, or why not by horse and sled? Dark surroundings, free from electric light, provide the best environment in which to fully enjoy the spectacle in the sky.

For those of us who live here in Gällivare, the snowmobile may well be the most important vehicle in the winter. It carries us deep into the forest, to winter fishing at our favourite lake and to wonderful vistas in the mountains. Try it yourself together with guide for a couple of hours, or go on a longer snowmobile safari over a couple of days. Dogsledding is another popular winter activity that you have to try.

Experience the feeling of the dogs barking, eager to push forward, only to fall completely silent when the musher releases the snow anchor and the dogsled pulls you peacefully through snow-clad countryside.

Are you longing for snow-covered slopes and vast white vistas? Do you want to be comfortably close to all kinds of activities whilst still getting to keep the feeling of untouched nature? Let us present Dundret, the mountain that lies in the middle of Gällivare. It doesn’t matter if you arrive by plane, by train or by car, adventure is only a couple of minutes away.

Close to the town centre, Dundret gives it a majestic backdrop.

The view from the top of the mountain is difficult to beat. Dundret is a playground for snow lovers and a truly great ski resort. Don’t just take our word for it, trust all the national ski teams that choose to prepare for the coming season right here. When the ski resort opens in early November, six intense months of all kinds of skiing and winter activities lie ahead.

The hotel, the restaurant and the ski lodges are halfway up the mountain, offering a great view of the town and the slopes that are only a couple of ski-lengths away. There are slopes for all levels, a fun park for the adventurous and great off-piste opportunities.

If you feel that your equipment or technique is getting a bit rusty, don’t worry, we have all the latest equipment available for hire and lessons for both cross-country and downhill adventures. We warmly recommend touring through untouched snow, accompanied by a local guide of course. If you still have some energy left after the day, you can ski on illuminated tracks before turning in.

Layer-on-layer warms the best Dress well and keep warm and cosy in the Arctic winter. Layer-on-layer is the way to do it, and choosing the right materials is important. When you wear several layers, you can easily add or remove clothing to suit changing temperatures and activities throughout the day. Closest to your body, you need a layer that both warms and keeps moisture away. Choose woollen underwear or synthetic functional material.

Layer two, the middle layer, must be able to absorb moisture. Especially if you will be exerting physical effort. The third layer is a warming layer and can be a cosy fleece shirt, whilst the fourth layer, a Gore-Tex jacket or similar, serves to stop both wind and snow. Sometimes, when it’s really cold outside or when you are resting, you will need a second warming layer, for example, a really snug down jacket.

SNOW GUARANTEED In Gällivare, we aim to be the first in Sweden to have ski tracks every season.

The ski season starts on November 1st, for the World Cup tracks at Hellner Stadium.

National cross-country teams from Canada and Czech Republic come to Gällivare for training. The Harrträsk track, loved by leisure skiers, is prepared as soon as there is enough natural snow. To top it all off, several forest roads in the area will also be turned into ski tracks. This means that you can pick and choose from miles and miles of varied cross-country tracks, right from the start of the season.

WINTER FISHING Fishing can easily be combined with other outdoor activities. If you are sport fisher, you will have great opportunities to find lovely little spots. Regardless of whether you are a professional or a newcomer, there are waters for you. If you are a sport fisher and not very familiar with the area, we recommend you to contact the Tourist Information Centre. They will help you with tips and spots that are well worth a visit.

Another option is to hire a guide in order to get the most out your visit.

A winter tradition for 200 years is the Gällivare Winter Market. Peddlers from the region and the rest of Sweden gather to sell quality handicrafts, food and other goodies. Keep your eyes open for local Sámi handicraft by skilled artisans and young designers.

Dundret offers a number of events where you can challenge both yourself and friends and family.

The classic Dundret Runt cross-country run is one of the oldest leisure ski runs. It is held in April, with several different lengths, allowing the entire family to take part, even the youngest. If you prefer downhill or uphill challenges, Dundret Rennen, Dundretbragden, Fjällbranten Trophy or Race of Legends might suit you better.

CHALLENGES FOR YOU AND YOUR FRIENDS In Gällivare, not only the elite get to compete. No, there are plenty of challenges for you, your friends, colleagues and family. A great way to keep in shape.

For hundreds of years, santas have competed with each other in deep winter forests around the world. In silence, without an audience, they have challenged each other to things like reindeer racing and rice pudding-eating. Since 2003, santas from all over the world have gathered in Gällivare for the popular Santa Winter Games.

The founder and initiator is Gällivare’s own Santa, Sivert Svensson, who decided to make this an official competition and big public event. It has been a success right from the start. Come along and find the true Christmas spirit at the spectacular 11th Santa Winter Games, November 20–23 2014.

Open every Sunday, including holidays like Christmas Day, Boxing Day etc. Take the easy way up, ski lift to the top and easy skiing to the ski lodge, or walk all the way around from the valley below. Everyone who visits the ski lodge on every Sunday during the winter season gets a unique Åke-på-toppen woollen hat – a matter of great prestige amongst the locals.

The Gällivare Winter Market is a popular meeting place with a long heritage. The entire town comes alive during this weekend in the middle of March, just as the light slowly returns and the days get a bit longer. For more than 200 years, handicraft, leather, meat and spices have been sold in the town centre.

Travelling salesmen from near and far still come here to buy and sell. Be sure to look for high quality Sámi handicraft, and if you are lucky, you might just find some dried reindeer meat to take home.

Small, world-class arctic town WITH GRAND RELOCATION PLANS

began in Gällivare in the late 19th century, the small town on the border between forest and mountain land has been in a state of constant change. When the mining expands, the surroundings are affected and houses and other buildings must sometimes be moved or demolished.

Here there’s nothing strange about that, it is quite a natural development in a mining community. You could say that we live in symbiosis with the mining industry, as it steadily provides us with jobs and new business. By the way, did you know that there are two mines in Gällivare? The LKAB iron ore mine, the second largest underground mine in the world – and the Boliden copper mine in Aitik, about 15 kilometres outside of Gällivare.

Moving houses and buildings is nothing new to us. We have been doing that in Malmberget, a part of Gällivare, for about 40 years. The changes that are now ahead of us are the greatest so far. Of course, they affect the town and the people here in different ways. It is an exciting time, but also an emotional one.

In the next 20 years, three quarters of Malmberget is to be shut down. Public buildings like the old peoples’ home, the gymnasium, the indoor swimming pool and many schools, must be replaced. Almost 2,000 homes are affected, along with historic buildings, offices, trade and industrial facilities. 250,000 new square metres will be built in Gällivare, two town centres are becoming one. It is a gigantic project that will transform the place from the ground up.

In ‘New Gällivare’, outdoor living is a natural part of everyday life.

LKAB – Malmberget is home to the second largest under-

ground mine in the world, mining at 1,300 metres underground and producing about 40,000 tons of iron ore every day. In 2013, the total weight of finished products from LKAB was almost 9 million tons, making LKAB the fifth largest tax payer in Sweden that year. At the deepest level in the mine, 1,250 metres underground, there is even a restaurant for employees.

AITIK – The Boliden Aitik

mine is situated about 15 kilometres outside Gällivare, mainly producing copper, but also silver and gold.

Mining takes place above ground and if you go to the vantage point at the edge of the mine, you can see 450 metres down into the open cast. Aitik is the largest open mine in Scandinavia and one of the largest copper mines in Europe. The machines that drive on the roads of the mine are amongst the largest in the world, some weighing 570 tons.

The vision: New Gällivare In 2009, Swedish Industry Design arranged the event ‘City Move in Gällivare’. Thirty-eight researchers and city planners from about twenty different countries gathered to take on the challenge of moving a town. One of the conclusions reached was the importance of participation and dialogue with the citizens. Following an extensive citizen consultation, a vision was agreed upon: Gällivare was to be developed to become a small, world-class Arctic town. Citizens wanted housing near the mountains at Repisvaara and housing near the city at the Vassara River, as well as a densification of the town centre.

An attractive, sustainable small town close to nature. The transformation has already begun and it is estimated to be completed by 2032. You’re invited to enjoy our town and to join our exciting move towards the future.

Gällivare is a large area with a living countryside and many small, lively villages. Go explore the local culture, in the midst of majestic nature and with many exciting experiences and activities available.

HAKKAS

Hakkas is situated about 50 kilometres south of central Gällivare along route E10 and it is the largest village in the municipality, with about 500 residents. The Hakkas area is famous for its successful skiers, amongst other things, outdoor sports and activities are very important here. Cooperation and togetherness are very important to the people living here. The name Hakkas comes from the Finnish word ‘hakanen’, meaning ‘pen’ or ‘field’.

The settler Per Olsson was the first to settle in the area, at Melderstein Manor, in 1781.

The Hakkas district includes the villages: Hakkas, Björkberget, Kattån, Mukkavaara, Mäntyvaara, Palohuornas, Purnu, Ratukkavaara, Sadjem, Sammakko-Lillberget, Sangervaara, Satter, Skröven, Storberget, Torasjärvi, Torrivaara and Yrttivaara.

NATTAVAARA

Nattavara is situated about 70 kilometres southwest of Gällivare and has about 300 residents. Nattavaara was founded by a Finnish settler in the 1670’s. The Nattavaara area includes the villages Nattavaara by, Nattavaara station, Sarvisvaara and Kilvo.

It is probably most famous for the annual art exhibition, held every summer at the old school in Sarvisvaara, now the studio of artist Erling Johansson.

Another popular attraction is Malmens väg (The Ore Road), a 210 kilometre long historic winter trail that passes through the area. Malmens väg was built as a transportation route from Malmberget to the coast, between 1774 and 1882.

Ten kilometres northeast of Nattavaara, by lake Saarijärvi, there is an area of old-growth pine forest, with pines as old as 500 years.

ULLATTI

The village is situated between the mountain Särkisvaara and the river Ängesån, about 60 kilometres east of Gällivare.

The Ullatti area includes the villages Ullatti, Äjjävaara and Rantavaara. Many visitors come here to fish in Ängesån.

The village community centre in Ullatti is a gathering place for residents and visitors. It also serves as a hostel, a museum and a café. Other attractions in the area are the trapping pits in Mänttyvaara, the old mills at the intersection of rivers Myllyjoki and Ängesån, as well as an old settlement with remains from Ullatti’s first settlers. Storstenslandet is a site with large ice age stone blocks about one kilometre south of Ullatti.

Välimaa is a well-preserved part of the village with several log houses of important cultural and historic value. The old farmland is also preserved here.

SKAULO AND PUOLTIKASVAARA

The twin villages by the E10 – right between Gällivare and Kiruna – are a perfect starting point for fantastic experiences in the natural world, outdoor living and fishing. The villages are lively and arrange several communal activities. Don’t miss the Kaamos celebration in January, a ‘Celebration of Darkness’ with a torchlight procession, baked cake sales, songs, shows and ice lanterns.

The Lina and Kaitum old-growth mountain forests can be found in the area. They are links in the chain of nature reserves that line the mountain world and are dominated by vast coniferous forests and downy birches. The forests are largely old-growth.

The village of Tjautjas is situated thirty kilometres north of Gällivare, above the cultivation border, at the end of the road.

The beautiful countryside has made it a popular attraction.

The Tjautjas area includes the village Tjautjas and the Lina Forest Nature Reserve. There are just over 200 people living in the area and most live in the village centre. The village lies in a low mountain area close to water, and the proximity to Gällivare, the mountains and the water has led many people to move here, and given the population a relatively young average age. The Lina old-growth mountain forest can be found in the area. It is a link in the chain of nature reserves that line the mountain world and are dominated by vast coniferous forests and downy birches. The forest is largely old-growth. The entire area is all year-round reindeer herding country.

Purnuvaara is a sunny little village at the foot of the Jerttaberget Mountain – the perfect starting point for sport fishers, horse enthusiasts, nature photographers, hikers and athletes alike. Down by the river, you will find Gällivare Camping, offering comfortable cabins and hostel accommodation close to nature. Sweden’s northernmost windmill, built in the 1860’s, stands right beside the campsite entrance, near to the local heritage buildings. During the Santa Winter Games the winter market is held here, it is also a beautiful area in which to take walks. Another nice option is Gällivare Bed & Breakfast, with charming interiors and good personal service. You can also get a room with a great view of Dundret.

All roads lead to Gällivare No matter if you come by car, by train or by plane, it’s easy to get to Gällivare. The airport is close and transfer to downtown Gällivare is only 10–15 minutes. If you are driving to Gällivare by yourself, you can choose between roads E10 and E45. Remember to keep your eyes on the road and watch out for animals.
