TITANIC The Exhibition — A WORLD CLASS EXHIBITION

Welcome on an emotional journey through stories, photographs and personal keepsakes where you as a visitor will get to experience the most legendary ship in history on its first and last ever voyage. t h e at l a n t i c s t e a m s h i p Titanic was enormous, 269 metres long, 25 metres wide and 53 metres tall. The ship had room for 2,500 passengers, 885 crewmen and a load capacity of a staggering 6,000 tonnes. Additionally, she had 16 watertight bulkheads which, according to the advertising, were supposed to make her practically unsinkable.

Her maiden voyage across the Atlantic, from Southampton to New York, was expected to take six days. The first three passed without any problems but when lookout, Frederick Fleet discovered an iceberg straight ahead on the evening of April 14, everything changed. Six of the sixteen watertight bulkheads were damaged. The collision became a reality. 20 lifeboats with room for 1,178 of the 2,674 passengers were filled with women and children.

The men had to wait.

AT 3, 80 0 METERS’ DEPTH At 2:20 AM, Titanic sank beneath the surface.

In spite of the fact that she was supposed to be unsinkable, she sank with Captain Smith and 1,495 other passengers, in the space of two hours and forty minutes. There were also 123 Swedes on board. Swedish was actually the third most spoken language on the ship, as immigration from Sweden to America was still extensive in the early 20th century.

Today, the RMS Titanic rests at a depth of 3,800 metres. Because of her size, she is impossible to recover, but numerous expeditions have been carried out throughout the years. In addition to a wealth of knowledge, approximately 6,000 items have been recovered from the depths.

A MUSEAL ARENA FOR EXPERIENCES Titanic The Exhibition is much more than just an exhibition. It is a world class tourist attraction that will take you 106 years back in time. The exhibition contains a personal audio guide telling innumerable stories about the fates and

heroic actions of those on board. Several of the stories are connected to Sweden, as Titanic’s voyage happened at a time when many Swedes immigrated to America. This is reflected in, amongst other things, the fact that Swedish was the second most spoken language aboard the unsinkable ship. This exhibition contains approximately 200 items and several recreated, full-scale interiors. A multilingual audio guide is available.

ONE OF THE WORLD’S LARGEST The impression that Titanic left on the world is enormous. Many films and documentaries have been made. A library’s worth of literature. The most famous work is James Cameron’s “Titanic”, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. It is one of the most successful productions in the history of cinema, having grossed more than 2.1 billion dollars, reputedly the second largest profit of any film ever made.

On April 27, Titanic The exhibition, opens in Skellefteå. It’s one of the largest touring exhibitions in the world, dedicated to the world’s most famous Atlantic steamer.

• Swedish was the second most spoken language aboard the Titanic.

• The lifeboats had room for 1,178 of Titanic’s 2,207 passengers.

• In third class, “Swedish bread”, Swedish crispbread/knäckebröd was on the menu.

• Titanic was described as a floating palace.

Onboard the ship there was a gymnasium and a library, as well as a swimming pool and Turkish baths.

• The iceberg that Titanic collided with towered 25 metres above the surface and extended more than 100 metres into the depths.

LETTERS FROM AMERICA AT THE SKELLEFTEÅ MUSEUM

During the emigration years, 1870-1930, many people emigrated from Sweden. Here, in Västerbotten, emigration was not as extensive as elsewhere, still, many people were inspired to undertake the long journey across the Atlantic.

Who were they and what did they find? In this exhibition, we will encounter a few of those who made the journey and wrote home to their relatives in the Skellefteå area. www.skellefteamuseum.se

EXPLORATORIET Skellefteå is home to Sweden’s newest Science Center. It’s located at Nordanå and lets visitors play, experiment and experience to gain new insights into how our amazing world works, by promoting a greater understanding of science and technology. Even though just about anyone can have fun at Exploratoriet, activities are primarily aimed at children between the ages of five and fifteen. There is also a café here.

EXPERIENCE THE OLDEN DAYS AT RISMYRLIDEN

The Rismyrliden pioneer farmstead was established in 1825 and today it is one of the most widely appreciated places to visit in Skellefteå. A visit to Rismyrliden is a bit like opening a door to the past. In summer, members of the Friends of Rismyrliden Support Association live at the farmstead. On the farm, you can participate in one of the many activities organised here, enjoy a lovely Swedish fika at the café or just enjoy the tranquil surroundings. www.rismyrliden.se

EXHIBITION AND WILD GAME BOARD AT THE SVANSELE WILDERNESS CENTRE

In addition to biking and driving ATVs you can also visit one of Sweden’s largest wilderness museums. It spans 1,800 square metres and has eleven rooms. Practically all animals that are found in the subarctic fauna are represented here — more than 600 species in total. Here, you can also try the wild game board, an incredibly popular dish. www.svansele.se

In 1908, the then recently built hydroelectric plant at Finnforsfallet began operating. It was the first of the major power plants built by the city of Skellefteå along the Skellefte River — and in a way a majestic manifestation of the engineering feats of the day. Today, more than a century later, the hydroelectric plant remains intact with generators, instruments and turbines. Also, one of the old water tunnels has been opened, allowing those who visit to walk straight into the heart of the power plant. Guided tours daily at 12.15 PM and 2.15 PM. Adjacent to the museum you will find Café Finnfors and the children’s favourite Teknikboa (the Tech Shed) — a place where the whole family can explore electricity and energy. www.skekraft.se 9

A camping holiday at its best!

The Nielsen family have done it before. This is their seventh consecutive year with a caravan in Skellefteå. They like taking the day as it comes and staying close to water. This is their recipe for a successful camping holiday. m u m , t o n j e , lo o k s

out the open window of the caravan. Somewhere out there, the children are having a water fight with buckets, tubs and large water blasters. It really is too warm to have lunch inside the caravan, says dad, Trond, as he sets the table. The thermometer reads almost 30 degrees in the shade.

CLOSE TO WATER Mum, Tonje certainly has a point. There are 17 campsites in Skellefteå. Everything from the five-star Byske Havsbad and Skellefteå Camping, near the city, to gems such as Burträsk and Bureå Camping.

The improvised clothes line tied between the caravan awning and a tree branch, holds seven beach towels, a huge beach blanket and a lot of swimwear.

— The close proximity to water is important. We are here for the beach life first and foremost and we like the mix of popular sea baths and secluded lake shores.

RETURNING VISITORS The Nielsen family are returning visitors. They are camping in Skellefteå for the seventh year in a row. Mum, dad and children, Silja, Vilde and Roar.

— Do you remember the first time? Roar wasn’t even born.

The Nielsen family have tried most campsites across northern Sweden.

— We like going everywhere but Skellefteå’s charm lies in the mix. The city, the activities,

the places to visit and the events. There are so many different campsites. This allows us to travel around quite a bit and see all kinds of different surroundings.

shake his head for quite a while to get the water out. The children can hardly stop laughing, but they do promise that from now on, there will be no more water games inside the caravan.

— This afternoon, we’re going go-karting, Silja says with a smile as she sits down at the table.

Silja is the eldest of the children and this will be her first time karting on her own.

— You have to be at least 150 cm tall she says and stretches her back.

— She is 153, says little brother Roar, grinning as he eats his lunch. Roar is going karting too. He has dibs on his mother, as he is too short to drive by himself.

— She’s a much better driver than Dad, he says.

VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE The Nielsen family takes the day as it comes. In a way that’s the whole point of being on holiday.

— No two days are alike. We often go swimming, even though we like going into the city too. We treat ourselves at a restaurant or café and stroll through stores or go out to some

pleasant summer café, just to enjoy a fika or some ice cream. What we actually do doesn’t really matter, but we always do something, and it almost always turns out well.

TIME FOR GO - KARTING — This summer we’re going to the Skellefteå Adventure Park to climb the trees, says Roar. We missed that last year.

But first, it’s time for go-karting.

— Let’s goooo, Silja shouts, holding up her plate like a steering wheel. Roar has his mouth full and tries not to laugh. He can’t hold it and ends up spraying lemonade across the table.

— What did we say about water games inside, his father asks with a smile and gets up to grab a cloth.

Summer swimming One thing is for sure, if you are in Skellefteå this summer you won’t run out of swimming spots when you need to cool off. How about 1,500 lakes, five rivers, a 300 kilometre coastline and several temperate outdoor baths? The longest sandy beach can be found at Bjuröklubb. It is called Storsand and there you can run almost for forever.

Byske havsbad

A classic amongst beach bums and sun worshippers. A long, lovely, sandy beach, a fun playground and just next door to one of Swedish Lapland’s five-star campsites. This means that you will find everything you need here in terms of food, beverages and activities — and also, temperate outdoor pools.

Bovikens havsbad

Seven kilometres north of Skellefteå is the family friendly, shallow bay, Boviken. There are several barbecue sites and playgrounds near the beach, changing rooms, toilets and a really sandy beach volleyball court.

Storsand

Bjuröklubb is not just one of the most popular places to visit in Skellefteå, it is also home to the longest sandy sea beach in Swedish Lapland. The sand is light and fine-grained, always finding its way between your toes. On a calm day, you could easily think you were actually at a latitude far further south.

Sjöbottsand

In the middle of the little village, Sjöbotten, is the alluring Sjöbottsand, a sandy beach, very popular not least with families with children. There are also sparkling clean toilets and plenty of space.

Falkträsket

Falkträsket near the city offers a clean sandy seabed and the beach is covered by a soft, green lawn. Lying so close to the city, Falkträsket is a very popular place for late night dips after long, hot summer days.

Danielsten

Shallow, child-friendly sea bay with a lovely sandy seabed, less than a kilometre east of the community of Bureå. The sand is pleasantly fine-grained and there is a volleyball court and a changing room.

Gullsand

Sandy beach by the sea near Söderbodan, east of Ostvik. The bathing place is not too shallow and it is quite well protected from cold northern winds. An obvious summer favourite.

Långnäset

Långnäset is one of the longest lake beaches in Swedish Lapland and is a very child friendly bathing place. Shallow and very well suited to all kinds of beach activities. Långnäset lies one kilometre outside the village of Bodbysund, towards Skellefteå.

Vitbergsbadet

Vitbergsbadet is found in central Skellefteå, offering a wide range of bathing and swimming options, such as a large pool with a wave machine, a Jacuzzi, a hot water pool, a children’s pool and a waterslide. If you would like a drier experience, there is an open-air playground with a bouncy castle, a slide and an obstacle course. Everything is surrounded by green, nicely mowed lawns.

BJURÖKLUBB Text: Ted Logardt

Bjuröklubb is one of Skellefteå’s most popular destinations. The attractions of this peninsula are obvious to anyone who has ever visited, but the act of capturing Bjuröklubb in speech or writing is by no means, easy, however, we will give it a try. o f c o u r s e , b j u rö k lu b b remains where it is regardless of how the world turns. The peninsula is spectacular all year round. Nevertheless, it’s as if this place practically explodes with experiences between May and September.

When some of Sweden’s most popular Instagram celebrities were asked, after hanging out in Skellefteå for a week, what place they would most like to return to, their reply was as certain as it was in unison: — Bjuröklubb.

Why? Well, the variety, the contrasts, the rough and barren, against the soft and warm. The sea and the mainland and all the surrounding water.

THE LIGHTHOUSE AND THE SHIPWRECKS The lighthouse at Bjuröklubb was built in 1859.

On the edge of a cliff. 52 metres above sea level.

A yellow wooden octagon. She, the lighthouse, is still called “the old lady”. Why, no one really 16

knows, but throughout the years, she has seen quite a lot. Like in 1916 when two German ships were hijacked, in the midst of the burning World War. 22 crew members were still on board when the ships arrived in a Finnish harbour, under Russian command. 36 escaped on lifeboats, to Skelleftehamn. The event went down in history as the Bjuröklubb hijacking. Four days later, April 16 that year, the steamship Syria was torpedoed.

The ship was wrecked. 4,350 tons of iron ore on its way from Luleå out into the world, followed it to the bottom. Some divers say that the best diving in Sweden can be found right here.

THE NATURE RESERVE History and culture aside, many would argue that Bjuröklubb is first and foremost about nature. In 1976, the island was designated a nature reserve, thanks to its polished rocks covered with stones carried by the waves, weathered, gnarly pines DE ST I NAT I ONS OF SW E DI S H L A PL A ND S KEL L EFTEÅ

and spruces growing amongst the rocks. Not to mention the beaches with grey alder shrubbery, valerian, meadowsweet and the hair grass, Deschampsia bottnica.

It is sometimes said that the sun always shines over Bjuröklubb. That is an exaggeration of course, but the fact is that the island’s location contributes to it often having clear skies. It is therefore no wonder that Storsand, the longest sandy beach in Västerbotten, is an incredibly popular bathing beach during the summer months.

HERE AND THERE Bjuröklubb rose out of the sea 4,000 years ago.

Bjuröklubb is mentioned five times a day in weather reports on Swedish national radio. There are seven beds inside the coast pilot’s lookout, where you can even stay overnight. The lighthouse keeper’s cabin hosts a café serving at least seven different types of cookies and a handful of light meals. Gunnar Nordland has photographed spectacular northern lights with Bjuröklubb as a backdrop. The Swedish artist Laleh has written a

song about Bjuröklubb with 7,806,704 plays on Spotify. Thousands upon thousands of migratory birds truly love Bjuröklubb. Yes, this island is considered one of the best places in Sweden to see journeying birds. Humans have been around at least since the 6th century. Hunters and fishermen.

Ancient remains show their history. Foundation remains, a maiden’s grave and a labyrinth and a fisherman’s chapel, built in the mid-19th century.

Those are just some of the things worth mentioning about Bjuröklubb.

HAMNSKÄR — AN IDYLLIC SUMMER SPOT

The island of Hamnskär is found on the outer rim of the Skellefteå archipelago. There is no running water here.

No electricity. There are a total of seven beds available for booking, found in the old coast pilot’s house and at the annex. Standing on the cliffs and looking east, you will see nothing but the dark blue water of the Gulf of Bothnia, meeting the sky far away on the horizon. You can book a place on the Kinnbäcks skärgårdsturism tour boat out to Hamnskär. www.byskehavsbad.se

BY THE WATER Some days just has to be spend by the water. Here you’ll find some of the nicest hang outs nearby cooling water.

THE SUMMER THEATRE’S 30th ANNIVERSARY

Västerbottensteatern (the Västerbotten County Theatre) have hosted their outdoor summer theatre for 30 years. This makes it the longest-running summer theatre in Swedish Lapland and for their anniversary, Västerbotternsteatern have selected one of the most beloved fairy tales in Swedish literature. w i t h a p e r s e v e r a n c e equal to that of the undying summer light, Västerbotternsteatern have been running an outdoor summer theatre for 30 years.

Rain or shine. They have told stories such as “Peer Gynt”, “Hemsöborna” and “The Hunchback of Notre Dame”. For the 30th anniversary of their outdoor theatre, they have selected one of the great classics of Swedish literature, Astrid Lindgren’s “The Brothers Lionheart”.

— I have always dreamt of taking “The Brothers Lionheart” to the stage, explains director Ronny Danielsson. It mirrors humanity, it shows us how loyalty and friendship are the pillars of a peaceful world.

A WELL KNOWN STORY In 1973, “The Brothers Lionheart” was published as a book. In 1977 it was made into a film by director Olle Hellbom. Most children who grew up in the 70’s and later know the story of the seriously ill Karl, later known as Skorpan, who jumps out of the window of a burning house with his brother Jonatan and is subsequently reunited with him, on the other side of the stars, in the land on Nangijala.

— Through Thorne Rose Valley, Cherry Valley, Nangijala and Nangilima, we encounter hope, bravery and love in the struggle against a tyrant enslaving his people, explains Ronny. And the brothers succeed, they overthrow the tyrant and his evil dragon and free all oppressed souls.

NATURAL CONDITIONS The play will be staged amongst hanging birches and meandering streams at scenic Medlefors.

greater than ever. As is the number of amateur participants. Costumes and scenography have been inspired by “Game of Thrones” and late medieval mystery plays. Swedish Lapland’s most dedicated outdoor theatre certainly isn’t holding back for their 2018 summer play.

— We wish to create an experience that will immerse the audience in a land of fairy tales and campfires, says Francesca Quateym, Artistic Director of Västerbottensteatern, and performing in the natural setting of our surrounding landscape as a backdrop does feel exciting.

NOT YOUR ORDINARY FAIRY TALE “The Brothers Lionheart” is a classic tale. One of good and evil. But it also stands out amongst children’s stories. It doesn’t avoid difficult subjects.

When first published, some critics considered the book outright inappropriate, not least because of how it dealt with the subject of death.

The initial criticism quickly faded however

and “The Brothers Lionheart” became one of Astrid Lindgren’s best-loved stories, with only “Pippi Longstocking” being translated into more languages. This says a lot, as Astrid Lindgren is the Swedish author translated into the greatest number of languages. 101, to be precise.

To say that Västerbottensteatern’s production of “The Brothers Lionheart” is an absolute must-see in the summer of 2018, can hardly be regarded as anything other than stating the obvious.

“The Brothers Lionheart” is a drama for all ages, featuring music, songs and poetry. It is produced

TRÄSTOCKFESTIVALEN The festival, Trästockfestivalen (a Swedish play on Woodstock), is one of the year’s absolute highlights. It’s Sweden’s largest open (i.e. no entry fee) festival, with a great mix of acts both large and small, both local and global — and many would say that this is where you find the freshest music experiences.

— i f yo u a s k m e , you can see the true spirit of Trästockfestivalen at around 2:00 in the morning, Agnes says with a smile, looking dreamily up at the ceiling. After the last gig, there are about 100 volunteers, maybe more, finally catching their breath. We’re all dead tired, but we soldier on, starting to ear things down, the stages and festival area. It’s sun rise again and you’re embraced by a powerful sense of satisfaction. You are right there, right then. Nowhere else.

Agnes Lundmark works for the Mullberget Culture Association and is responsible for Sweden’s largest free festival — Trästockfestivalen. She has been a volunteer too, many times.

RAPID GROWTH No, Trästockfestivalen is nothing like many other, large festivals in Sweden. It goes its own way, it always has. With a mix of the large and small. The Swedish and the international. No entry fee, no alcohol.

— Trästockfestivalen is created by and for the grassroots. The music is central, but we give room to all kinds of cultural expressions.

In the early 90’s, the Skellefteå music scene was flourishing. That’s also when the first Trästockfestivalen was organised, in the open green areas of Nordanå.

— Back then, things were very informal. For instance, there was no designated festival area, but the desire to create a space for the local music scene was enormous.

As time went by, Trästockfestivalen grew, organically, by itself.

— Yeah, maybe even too much, explains Agnes and tells the story of how in 1997, the festival had to take a break. Things needed to be formalised.

TOO COMMERCIAL A year later, they were back with a clear vision and organisation.

— The festival knows its roots, what it is, where it comes from, says Agnes. Even when things needed to change.

The stories surrounding the festival are many — some truer than others. One of many is when band, Totalt Jävla Mörker felt that the festival had become too commercial. Rumour has it that they organised their own, alternative festival. In a bush near the entrance. As a comment on the overly organised order of the day.

— It sounds like something popularly known as Buskfestivalen (the Bush Festival), Fredrik Lindqvist, the band’s vocalist, says with a laugh.

I don’t know if our criticism was very serious but yeah, we were a group who occasionally played in a bush near the entrance.

Many musicians have played here before shooting to global stardom. First Aid Kit, The Hives and Cult of Luna are just a few of all the amazing musicians who have played Trästock early in their careers.

— Everything we do in the association throughout the year is a build-up for two days of festival, Agnes continues. And all those who contribute are given a chance to get up on the stage. It’s a simple principle. You build the stage you play.

NOT AFRAID TO INVEST However, Fredrik does remember that a couple of years earlier, the band had planned a guerrilla gig on a tractor trailer near the festival exit.

— We thought they’d never book us and sort of wanted revenge...

But there was no tractor trailer gig. Instead, the band played their first show of many to come at the festival.

Yes, Trästockfestivalen has always been open to new, not yet established acts.

— We want to be a springboard, says Agnes, and they have been.

A different world There is a difference between here and there. At least if “here” is defined as Skellefteå’s forests, our alluring countryside and archipelago — and “there” refers to the big city buzz of Berlin or possibly London. If you don’t take our word for it, trust Anne and Doreen.

In ecstasy, probably. They frenetically search for bare skin and if they find a gap in your clothing, they strike. Like ninjas on a mission. Ruthless.

Saleta grins and throws Anne a stick of mosquito repellent.

— Put some on. It keeps them away.

Anne gracefully catches the stick, opens it and applies it on hands, neck, cheeks and forehead.

Canoeing across the lake raised their body temperatures and made them convenient targets for the mosquitoes.

— Save some for me too, says Doreen, waving her arms in the air to shoo away the insects.

A GETAWAY There is an explanation for fact that Saleta, Anne and Doreen are in the porch of an old log driver’s cabin on a peninsula, somewhere in the vicinity of the village of Kalvträsk.

Saleta has invited the other two to Skellefteå.

Or, in her own words, “provided them sanctuary from the bustling life of the city.” For four days.

— It’s a different world, Saleta told them. It will do you good, I promise.

Anne lives in Berlin and Doreen in London.

And well, yes, most things there are different in comparison to here.

MEETINGS They have an ambitious plan. A journey from forest to coast. Canoeing, hiking, staying on islands and in the beautiful countryside. Footbridges and bilberry sprigs. Midnight light and sea breezes. But perhaps most importantly, Saleta has promised them that they will get to hang out with people who have no other place they would rather be, doing their own thing because they can.

100 metres ahead on the trail, Conny sits crouched, on a footbridge across the wetland.

Cupping his hand, he drinks water straight from the cold spring.

— Come and have a taste, he calls.

Conny is one of all these people. He is a nature photographer. The small village of Kalvträsk is his base and he spends a large part of his life in the forests surrounding the Vitbergen nature reserve, in summer as well as in winter. For anyone familiar with the Lord of the Rings trilogy, it’s hard not to think of Treebeard, the ent, when you see him.

A WORLD AWAKENING The clock is about to strike midnight. The sun has just set but it is light as day, with a small difference, in that the light of the summer night is soft and magical.

— Almost there, says Conny. We should be at the summit just in time for the sunrise.

The first rays of sunlight cross the horizon. They are weak, but enough to illuminate the forest and lakes and to disperse the morning mist.

The view from the forest fire lookout, towering 17 metres above the mountain peak, is awe inspiring. They sit in silence, all four of them, watching, listening. The mosquitoes haven’t found their way up here.

— It is so tranquil, says Doreen.

A cuckoo calls somewhere in the distance.

A Siberian jay, close by looking like it wonders whether it will get a snack. The sun rises in the sky.

— This is how the world awakens, says Anne.

JUST THE BEGINNING By the campfire, down by the water, they have supper. Or breakfast, depending on how you look at it. Smoked perch from the neighbouring lake, served on ljusugnsbröd, crisp flatbread, with almond potatoes and Kalvträsk cheese. A much-needed energy boost after the hike up and down the hill.

Saleta has lit the stove inside the log driver’s cabin as well, more for the cosy atmosphere than for the warmth. The morning brings a light wind.

Soft waves nudge the canoes. Terns hunt across the water. There really is nothing to say that it’s time for bed.

— The beds are made, says Saleta. It’s time to sleep.

Doreen sits on the edge of the pier, brushing her teeth.

— You were right, she says. This really is something else.

— You know, says Saleta, swatting a mosquito on her forehead, this is just the beginning.

During their visit, Anne and Doreen also hang out with Björn and Linnea and make a stop at Pär and Johanna’s place in Svedjan to try their cheese and fall in love with country life. They have lunch at the Kåge harbour café, afternoon fika at Lorens in Lillkågeträsk, a good night’s sleep at Stiftsgården and some island hopping in the Skellefteå archipelago together with Mats — and much, much more.

i n t h e m i ddl e of the harvest month of August, 15 farms around Bureå, Lövånger and Burträsk will be opening their doors to the public. The idea is to let visitors discover the amazing range of locally produced food available in the region.

— We would like to introduce local, small-scale food production to a wider audience, explains Ulrica, chairman of the MatTuren association.

It is MatTuren’s fifth year. The event is highly appreciated and grows every year.

— New producers have joined and even more people wish to visit our farms.

Last summer, some farms were visited by up to 300 people.

— Then it’s full speed ahead, she says with a laugh. This year, food will also be served at a few selected farms.

Like a fish in the water Skellefteå has a 300 kilometre long coastline, longest uninterrupted coastline in Sweden. There are also more than 1,500 lakes here and five rivers leading to the sea, three of which have wild salmon populations — such a concentration of wild salmon cannot be found anywhere else in Sweden. The Byske River is also one of the most well-renowned salmon rivers in Sweden. Of course, sport fishers feel like fish in water here.
