Welcome to Skelleftea!

An important part of summer in Skellefteå is water. Wild, wonderful waters. Because we have more than 1,500 lakes, 5 rivers, a wealth of mires and small brooks and a 300 kilometre coastline.

So, in summer we fish for perch from old wooden boats and for pike from sturdy motorboats. We go fly fishing in proud, flowing rivers, for salmon, trout or grayling. And we swim. Oh, how we swim. Sometimes in the middle of the day with the sun at its zenith, sometimes just dipping our toes in from a pier and sometimes an evening swim just as the sun has sunk behind the treetops, leaving a soft and dusky light. And we love getting soaked in a fresh summer rain, or hearing its rhythmic tapping against a metal roof. We love sitting in an open-air restaurant in the city centre, with the beautiful, mirror-like surface of the Skellefte River as a backdrop. And we love the view from the outer rim of the archipelago, where the sky meets the sea and the mind is set free.

But we do a lot more than that, of course. We dance as if nobody is watching during groovy music festivals, we tell stories and we fall in love with local, small-scale production.

We get bitten by mosquitoes on cloudberry-covered mires, we get excited when art and culture inspire us to think new thoughts. Bigger thoughts. And every now and then we do something we didn’t really think we had the nerve to do, just to feel that amazing thrill.

But most of all we love the fact that this is our summer — our wild, wonderful waters — and that you are warmly welcomed to share all of this with us.

Island life in the Bothnian archipelago has not always been easily accessible to visitors without their own boat or a house on one of the outer islets. However, the island world under the midnight sun is now, slowly but surely, becoming accessible to everyone. in through the window on the upper floor of the old lighthouse keeper’s residence on the island of Pite-Rönnskär. Outside, the landscape is covered in a beautiful morning mist. I should probably have pulled down the blind to get the best possible sleep, but that has never been the way I have handled summer. I love the fact that I do not sleep well during summer, that I live my life in harmony with the sun.

I tiptoe down the stairs and slip out through the door. Then I put my running shoes on. It’s completely calm. Stillness. In the mist, I feel like I have not just an island to myself, but a whole world.

QUIET MORNING A trail leads across the island, to the west. It is almost two kilometres long. I run it back and forth a few times.

In the mist I see cobwebs, damp and clearly 6

visible. After a while I no longer bother whisking it away with my hands. There is something almost refreshing about running into the cold, wet cobwebs.

It’s as if it makes your steps longer. But I hold back.

Partly because I don’t have very much to give, partly because it feels almost brash to storm across the island on such an almost sacred, quiet morning. Out by the coastal inlet, I can hear the seagulls calling.

ISLAND LIVING We came here yesterday. We took the tour boat from Kinnbäck with skipper Mats Johansson. He and his partner Jeanette Larsson have been running the café on Pite-Rönnskär for a couple of years now.

According to Mats, business is good. He has seen a 20% increase in the number of passengers this year.

It’s not surprising. It’s a pleasant tour, 15 minutes to the outermost islet. And with Mats and Jeanette running such a good café and hostel on Pite-RönnDE ST I NAT I ONS OF SW E DI S H L A PL A ND S KEL L EFTEÅ

Pite-Rönnskär, a kind of slumbering gem in the southern part of the Bothnian archipelago, has been opened up to a wider audience. Four rooms, with a simple, rustic feel have already been prepared on the ground floor. A couple of newer, slightly larger rooms will be finished this autumn.

14–15 people will be able to sleep there if they share the rooms and 7–8 people can easily stay in separate rooms if that is preferred.

— We are thinking about extending our season, explains Mats as we head out with the boat. You know, it’s really beautiful out here in March, in early spring, with the pack ice.

THE VIEW FROM THE LIGHTHOUSE It is easy to make yourself comfortable in the house beneath the second highest lighthouse in Sweden.

One afternoon it turns out that one of the island’s resident summer guests is going up into the lighthouse to show friends and family the view. We go along with them. The view is, of course, magnificent. The red Heidenstam lighthouse provides

a 37-metre-high observation post in the middle of the island. The Heidenstam lighthouse is a construction designed by Gustav von Heidenstam, for placement on the most inaccessible islands.

Incidentally, he was the father of poet Verner von Heidenstam, who wrote the famous passage “It is fairer to listen to the string that broke than to never strain a bow”.

ISLAND TIME After my run and a dip in the sea, just because it feels so good, I eat breakfast outside in the sunshine. Mats and Jeanette are hard at work. Mats will be running boat tours of the archipelago, many people have booked a tour in the fantastic weather. I check the forecast and it looks like the next days out here are going to be great too. I feel a pang of melancholy. It feels too soon to leave. I have taken on the island pace, I’m on “island time”.

The menu is inspired by the sea, with items such as a large shrimp sandwich made with fresh, hand-peeled shrimps, a selection of pickled herring, herring and mashed potatoes, Caesar salad, waffles, baked potato with Skagen topping (a kind of shrimp and dill mayonnaise), Skagen toast and freshly made bread. There is also a kids’ menu, for all children. The café is fully licensed, allowing you to enjoy a cold beer, a glass of wine or a schnapps with your herring. A nature reserve, a sandy beach, a summer café, an interesting history and a breath taking view. Yes, Bjuröklubb does have a lot to offer. It is also very accessible. At the old lighthouse you can stop for a light snack or hire a picnic blanket and go outdoors. HAMNSKÄR — AN IDYLLIC SUMMER SPOT

The island of Hamnskär is found on the outer rim of the Skellefteå archipelago. There is no running water here. No electricity. There are a total of seven beds available for booking, found in the old coast pilot’s house and at the annex. Standing on the cliffs and looking east, you will see nothing but the dark blue water of the Gulf of Bothnia, meeting the sky far away on the horizon. Summer swimming One thing is for sure, if you are in Skellefteå this summer you will have plenty of options when you need to cool off. How about 1,500 lakes, five rivers, a 300 kilometre coastline and several temperate outdoor baths? The longest sandy beach can be found at Bjuröklubb. It is called Storsand and there you can run almost for forever.

Byske havsbad

A classic amongst beach bums and sun worshippers. A long, lovely, sandy beach, a fun playground and just next door to one of Swedish Lapland’s five-star campsites. This means that you will find everything you need here in terms of food, beverages and activities — and also, temperate outdoor pools.

Bovikens havsbad

Seven kilometres north of Skellefteå is the family friendly, shallow bay, Boviken. There are several barbecue sites and playgrounds near the beach, changing rooms, toilets and a really sandy beach volleyball court.

Storsand

Bjuröklubb is not just one of the most popular places to visit in Skellefteå, it is also home to the longest sandy sea beach in Swedish Lapland. The sand is light and fine-grained, always finding its way between your toes. On a calm day, you could easily think you were actually at a latitude far further south.

Sjöbottsand

In the middle of the little village, Sjöbotten, is the alluring Sjöbottsand, a sandy beach, very popular not least with families with children. There are also sparkling clean toilets.

Falkträsket

Falkträsket near the city offers a clean sandy seabed and the beach is covered by a soft, green lawn. Lying so close to the city, Falkträsket is a very popular place for late night dips after long, hot summer days.

Danielsten

Shallow, child-friendly sea bay with a lovely sandy seabed, less than a kilometre east of the community of Bureå. The sand is pleasantly fine-grained and there is a volleyball court and a changing room.

Gullsand

Sandy beach by the sea near Söderbodan, east of Ostvik. The bathing place is not too shallow and it is quite well protected from cold northern winds. An obvious summer favourite.

Långnäset is one of the longest lake beaches in Swedish Lapland and is a very child friendly bathing place. Shallow and very well suited to all kinds of beach activities. Långnäset lies one kilometre outside the village of Bodbysund, towards Skellefteå.

Vitbergsbadet

Vitbergsbadet is found in central Skellefteå, offering a wide range of bathing and swimming options, such as a large pool with a wave machine, a Jacuzzi, a hot water pool, a children’s pool and a waterslide. If you would like a drier experience, there is an open-air playground with a bouncy castle, a slide and an obstacle course. Everything is surrounded by green, nicely mowed lawns.

DID YOU KNOW... that Skellefteå is known as the city of storytellers? This is partly because of the many authors who have been inspired by the region.

Stiftsgarden Stiftsgården in Skellefteå opened its doors to the public almost five years ago. The spa facility is a reminder of vicar Brandell’s third wife, Miss Huss, who procured the city’s first bathtub. Aside from that, the story actually begins with the vicar, Johannes of Skellopt in 1374, a contemporary of Saint Bridget of Sweden and Dante’s Divine Comedy. yo u c o u l d s ay that this is where Skellefteå began.

At Stiftsgården, next door to Sweden’s oldest country church, the country’s oldest wooden bridge and the Bonnstan district. The picturesque church town that has been around since the 17th century.

— Yes, explains Kalina, the whole area is, in a way, Skellefteå’s cradle.

Kalina is the Managing Director of Stiftsgården and a proud carrier of its history. We have coffee in the restaurant, in what used to be a vicarage well into the 20th century. For the last 50 years, various kinds of courses and conferences have been held here.

— This place is so incredibly rich in history. It’s not always easy to know where to begin, Kalina says with a smile.

— THE CRADLE OF THE CITY OF SKELLEFTEÅ

FRÖKEN HUSS (MISS HUSS) In 2011 Stiftsgården opened its doors to the public and three years later the business was expanded with an outdoor spa in the courtyard: “Fröken Huss Spa & Relax”.

— Miss Anna Huss was the third wife of vicar Brandell, explains Kalina. She moved to the vicarage in 1879 and amongst her belongings was a bathtub, the vicarage’s first. A bathtub from the city was a strange thing in those days.

Today, there are more and larger bathtubs at Fröken Huss.

— And they are far more luxurious, Kalina says with a laugh.

HISTORIC HOSPITALITY At Stiftsgården you can relax your shoulders and breathe in the moment. But more than anything else, Stiftsgården is a place firmly rooted in its history.

— From the moment you enter the yard and meet the aroma of blossoming apple trees, to when you greet the chef who will tell you about the evening menu. Everything is connected to the place and its history. The walls are imbued with hospitality. ”The housemaid Margareta Renhorn is left DE ST I NAT I ONS OF SW E DI S H L A PL A ND S KEL L EFTEÅ

behind in the kitchen of Stiftsgården after Russian troops, in one of the last battles on Swedish soil in 1809, chased Swedish soldiers and civilians away.

The parting words of Doctor Ström’s wife are still ringing in Margareta’s ears when she finds herself seated at the table with the Russian General Schuvalov: ‘Whosoever makes claim to our house, be it friend or foe, you will show them the hospitality that is customary in this vicarage.’”

According to legend, the remarkable hospitality was what convinced the Russian general to spare Stiftsgården from death and destruction.

— She is, of course, a guiding light to us in how we treat our guests.

THE CITY OF SKELLEFTEÅ In 1834, Nils Nordlander moved into Stiftsgården. He is, in many respects, the founder of the city of Skellefteå and court chaplain Nordlander was known as a charismatic man who would rarely yield without getting his own way. ”In the early hours of the morning he gets up to organise work at the large estate farm, with all its employees. By the desk in his office, a steady stream of new plans is drafted with far-reaching consequences for the entire region. At Nordlander’s behest, Skellefteå is granted city privileges in 1845, the secondary school is founded in 1860 and the Skellefteå Savings Bank is established, with its first, simple office inside the vicarage — all for the benefit of the common people. Here, ideas on reformation of the care for society’s poor and the development of the educational sectors are also born, whilst sermons on the most important care are prepared.”

— That bank vault still exists, Kalina says with a smile. It’s a fantastically beautiful room.

IMBUED IN THE WALLS Today, the vicarage has been turned into a restaurant and meeting place and the facility has both a hotel and a hostel.

— 87 beds all in all. The kitchen is based around

pure, authentic flavours combined to create authentic meals. We gather as much as possible from our own garden where we have apple trees, berry bushes and spices.

— On the second floor, up the stairs from the restaurant, is Anna’s Room, part of the Upper Drawing Room; an homage to the artist who paved the way for women in the arts. ”Anna Nordlander was born in 1834, daughter of Nils Nordlander. She was one of the first women to study at the Royal Academy of Arts in Stockholm and she continued her studies in Brussels and Paris. In her art, Anna depicted the landscapes of her childhood. Sami motifs were popular at the time but whilst many artists looked to the mountain world, Anna Nordlander chose to focus on the less imposing, more barren lowlands of Swedish Lapland. Aside from landscapes she found inspiration in Nordic history and mythology. The Museum Anna Nordlander at Nordanå is an homage to the artist. In addition to the MAN, her works can also be seen at the Skellefteå City Library and in Anna’s Room at Stiftsgården.”

The ceiling of the Upper Drawing Room is magnificently high and the light of the early morning sun streams in, on people and interiors.

— In the evening, this is a drawing room for our guests. Here you can enjoy a good book, lose yourself in endless conversation or just let yourself be carried away by the beating wings of history. Sometimes, life does not have to be any more complicated than that.

It can be a large cappuccino at a nice café, surrounded by people and friends, or a warm night at one of the inviting open-air establishments in the city. In Skellefteå, we are really proud of our local tastes. The ones that are rooted in a flourishing environment where fantastic ingredients are allowed to grow at their own pace and on their own terms. Sometimes we enjoy deep-fried lichens accompanying a lightly smoked reindeer tartar at one of Skellefteå’s top restaurants. Other times it’s as simple as a fistful of blueberries from hand to mouth, in the middle of the forest.

Something that all our natural tastes have in common is the fact that they get their energy from a clean, flourishing environment and that they reinforce your experience of being right here, right now. It is also more of a rule than an exception that a really good tasting experience often turns into a great night out, preferably wrapped up on a vibrant dance floor. The motto of summer: Go out and stay out... late!

THE CITY FESTIVAL — THE NUMBER ONE SUMMER EVENT!

The City Festival (Stadsfesten) is one of the best music festivals in Swedish Lapland.

Every year, the event attracts about 90,000 visitors to Skellefteå. Here is the story of Skelleftefestivalen, the festival that turned into Stadsfesten and one of the most important summer happenings in Skellefteå. i t a l l b e g a n back in 1994, the city of Skellefteå was celebrating its 150th anniversary and as part of the jubilee the city was going to organise its very own music festival — Skelleftefestivalen. Around that time, musician Gunnar Karlsson was 28 years old.

In between tours he suddenly found himself in the inner circle of the event — where he has remained for the last 24 years.

— At that time, Skellefteå wasn’t much of an ‘event city’. Sure, we had Trästockfestivalen, but in the mid-1990’s it was a pretty niche affair.

Skelleftefestivalen was supposed to be for everyone, both young and old alike.

A POPULAR FESTIVAL The first Skellefte festival was an ambitious project. It was to be held for nine days, with a packed programme.

— We managed to hold a test run in the previous year. It was lucky that we did because there were many small details that didn’t quite work as intended. Amongst other things, we had failed to enclose the festival grounds, which led to about a thousand people getting in without paying, Gunnar says with a laugh.

With lessons learned from the previous year, the festival the year after was nothing short of a crowd favourite.

— It was a popular festival, Gunnar reminisces.

booking the American punk band, The Ramones.

Imagine that, international stars coming to the unknown Skellefteå. The same year we were also lucky enough to have the British band, Suede, who scored their big international break just months after standing on the stage in our city square.

WELL RENOWNED The 1994 Skellefte Festival was a success but financially burdensome for the organisers.

— I think many saw it as a one-off. At the same time, we felt that there was a lot we could do better.

Colleagues in the music business also stressed that it takes three years for a festival to get off the ground.

Said and done. The festival was downsized, fine-tuned and between 1996 and 2002 there was tremendous growth. The festival was shortened from nine to five days, whilst the number of visitors increased from 30,000 to a staggering 100,000.

— We attracted people from all over the country and Skellefteå started garnering attention as a real ‘event city’. We knew we were doing things right as it became steadily easier to book big names — the festival was now well renowned in the music business.

MAGIC MOMENTS During the 24 years that Gunnar has been around, many artists have passed through Skellefteå.

— At least 600 acts, I’d say. We’ve only ever had two cancelled gigs, touch wood. But it has been close, sometimes.

Gunnar tells the story of how British band, Skunk Anansie, only hours before the show, realised that all of their equipment had been left at Heathrow in London.

— I think we went to every local youth club on a hunt for cables, microphones, pedals and everything else that was missing. But it all ended well.

Another lasting memory is Robyn’s performance in 2011.

— We’ve never had so many people in Möjligheternas torg (The Square of Opportunity) at the same time. We estimate that there were about 11,000 people there.

THE SUMMER OF 2017 For the summer of 2017, the ever popular Magnus Uggla, Australian hard rockers Airbourne and the king of the dancefloor, Ingrosso, are amongst the artists visiting the City Festival.

— We are really pleased with this year’s roster.

Our ambition still is to have a festival that is as broad as possible, with music, market stalls and an amusement park. We feel that we have succeeded in doing this — for the 24th year in a row.

TOUGH YEARS Whilst the Skellefte Festival flourished, many other festivals were established throughout Sweden.

— I don’t know if there was a music festival glut in the mid-2000’s but many festivals had a tough time, not just us. Many big festivals closed down or scaled back drastically.

2005 would have spelled the end of the Skellefte Festival but a couple of enthusiasts connected to local

enterprise wanted otherwise.

— To cut a long story short, new organisers took over, I remained, the Skellefte Festival turned into the City Festival and that’s the way it is, says Gunnar with a smile.

Norrland. The vast landmass that covers 60% of the surface of Sweden and is home to 12% of its population. Norrland is often said to consist of wilderness.

Wasted space and government subsidies. But Norrland is also a force of nature.

An enabler. Yes, the image of the north is as broad as it is contradictory. And that is the backdrop for this summer’s large exhibition at the Skellefteå Art Gallery.

n o r r l a n d , we have an India within our own borders, so long as we are sensible enough to make use of it.” That is what was said in the early 17th century and in the rivers, forests and mountains of Norrland, the Lord High Chancellor Axel Oxenstierna saw Sweden’s own colony. Over time, forests were logged, ore and gold were mined and hydroelectric dams were built on the thundering rivers, for welfare and for the future. It was painful for Norrland and beneficial to Sweden.

STEREOTYPES In some places we see public services leaving rural areas because of dwindling populations and job markets. However, we can also see how digitalisation helps international companies remain, to support small towns and the wonderful natural environment around them, as natural places for creativity and growth.

The image of Norrland is complex. Difficult, in a way.

Then again, Norrland is not homogenous, but influenced by people from various backgrounds; with different motivations, goals and purposes.

— Of course, there is an unflattering caricature of the Norrlander. It’s often a man. He says very little, wears flannel, uses snus tobacco and drinks moonshine, explains AnnaKarin Larsson, manager at the Skellefteå Art Gallery.

This explains the origins of the exhibition "Norrland", an exhibition about half of Sweden.

GIVING SPACE The exhibition should not be viewed as a reaction to stereotypes about Norrland as portrayed for example in popular culture.

— I feel that it is more about highlighting what a diverse place Norrland is. Also, we want to give Norrland space. Put it in the spotlight, somehow. Norrland does not take up, or is not given, the same amount of space as other parts of the country. And when it is actually portrayed, it is often from an outside perspective, where Norrland and its people are often exotified.

AN IMPRESSIVE COLLECTION The exhibition gathers artists from Gävleborg in the south to northernmost Norrbotten, sharing their personal experiences of the phenomenon that is Norrland. Throughout the summer, visitors will be able to experience Katarina Pirak Sikku’s thoughts on footsteps — where they come from and where they take you. Anders Sunna’s powerful, often political art and crocheted aquarelle painted fabrics

by Sven Teglund’s grandmother, amongst many other things.

— I am very proud to be able to present such an amazing collection of artists in one exhibition. If I have to pick a personal favourite, it would be the Romanian tinsmith Anton Cirurar and Umeå-based Johannes Samuelsson, touching on subjects such as the heritage and living conditions of tradesmen in a town in northern Europe.

The exhibition, Norrland is on display between June 11 and September 3 at the Skellefteå Art Gallery and participating artists are Anders Sunna, Katarina Pirak Sikku, Anton Cirurar and Johannes Samuelsson, Sara Helene Gedda, Erika Mikael Gudrunsson, Magdalena Nordin, Jonas Kjellgren and Sven Teglund. The exhibition was shown in Luleå in 2016.

SKRÅMTRÄSK MILL Shoemaker and mill in Skråmträsk. The businesses of Erik and Asta Hellgren are bound together by a common thread of sustainability, environmental friendliness and not least, high quality. Qualities that have helped the Skråmträsk mill become one of the most appreciated places to visit in Skellefteå today. and Asta bought the old 1940’s mill in Skråmträsk. The idea was for the people who visited the shoemaking business where they make sustainable, environmentally friendly shoes of the highest quality, to also have a nice place to enjoy a cup of coffee. Following an extensive, yet careful renovation, the Skråmträsk mill opened in the summer of 2009.

— We naively thought that this would be good for the kids. A moderately demanding summer job, Erik says with a smile.

It didn’t quite turn out that way.

— No, we were not at all prepared for what happened. We had 3,000 visitors in our first summer with more than 200 on the most hectic days. And back then we were only open for four hours a day.

QUALITY AS A GUIDING PRINCIPLE Today, the Skråmträsk mill is an established tourist destination and last season more than 13,000 guests made their way to Erik and Asta’s summer café.

— We want the mill, just like our shoemaking,

to feel authentic and have an air of quality. That’s why we have kept as much of the original interior as possible.

The café has also been certified according to the KRAV environmental certification for the last three years.

— We bake everything ourselves, on location and we select our ingredients carefully.

In 2016, the Skråmträsk mill was also listed in the White Guide, a guide to Sweden’s best restaurants and cafés.

— That felt really good, of course, and it inspires us to keep up our work.

THE SKRÅMTRÄSK SHOE It all began, however, with shoemaking. In 1989 the first Skråmträsk shoe left the shoemaker’s, across the road from the mill. Its design was and still is simple, yet timeless. With an essence of Scandinavia.

— We’re not really following any trends, explains Erik. We mostly do things the way we always have.

We are environmentally friendly and attentive to detail, with naturally tanned leather and proper craftsmanship.

Making shoes by hand has its benefits.

— Leather is an organic material and every piece has its own characteristics. During the process of making a shoe by hand, the materials are constantly handled according to their individual properties.

That’s what makes a handmade shoe a better and ultimately more sustainable product.

CULTURAL EVENTS During the nine weeks that the Skråmträsk mill is open, Erik and Asta also organise a number of cultural events inside the spacious building.

— It’s usually quite an extensive programme with storytelling theatre, singalongs, art and photo exhibitions. You know, the mill is an amazing place, not least for storytelling, explains Erik. Audiences and actors alike speak of the unique atmosphere that is created during performances.

— There’s something about the mill that makes everything so intimate and close. It’s real, somehow.

RISMYRLIDEN — LIKE IN THE OLDEN DAYS

The Rismyrliden farmstead was established in 1825 and today it is one of the most appreciated places to visit in the region — a visit to Rismyrliden is like opening a door to the past. In summer, members of the Friends of Rismyrliden Preservation Society live at the farm. EXCITEMENT AT THE FINNFORS HYDROPOWER PLANT MUSEUM

In 1908 the new power station at Finnforsfallet began operating — as the first of the major plants built on the Skellefte River by the city of Skellefteå. To this day, the century-old power station remains intact with generators, instruments and turbines. One of the old tunnels has been opened, meaning that you can walk straight into the heart of the power plant. Guided tours at 12.15 and 14.15 every day.

Next to the museum is the Café Finnfors and Teknikboa (lit. the Technology Shed) — a place for the whole family to explore electricity and energy. www.skekraft.se

PROPER GELATO AT ALHEMS TRÄDGÅRD

Gelato is Italian for ice cream. Italian ice cream is in many ways something entirely different from the conventional ice cream you will find at your supermarket. Gelato is mainly made from milk rather than cream, which makes it lighter.

— The secret to a perfect gelato is a good basic recipe”, says Hans-Jörgen. It’s all about finding a balance between ingredients. Small variations in the recipe can make a huge difference.

EXHIBITION AND WILD GAME BOARD AT THE SVANSELE WILDERNESS CENTRE In addition to biking and driving ATVs you can also visit one of Sweden’s largest wilderness museums. It spans 1,800 square metres and has eleven rooms. Practically all animals that are found in the subarctic fauna are represented here — more than 600 species in total. Some of the best cheeses in Sweden On the slope leading down to the lake, 37 cows are grazing. Some are drinking water on the shore. The grass is green and if you are standing out in the yard, the view of Lake Storkågeträsket is second to none. No, the rural romanticism cannot be ignored. Then again, this is where the life of one of Sweden’s most well renowned cheeses begins.

t h e faca de of the farmhouse dairy is a plastered white. The front door is deep red with a stainless steel plate displaying the company name. Pär and Johanna live in the nearby house. They would have it no other way. They also make some of the best cheeses in Sweden. All the awards that the couple and their cheeses have won, attest to that. Gold medal upon gold medal in the Swedish Championship. Silver and bronze.

Farming entrepreneurs of the year. The People’s Choice Award. Words of praise from several other fashionable outlets. However, more than anything, you realise upon meeting Pär and Johanna that cheese making is about love. Love of the place, of the process and of the product.

— You could say that we have condensed our lives — everything we know and stand for; the beautiful life at a farm in the northern forestland, into a cheese.

— But we don’t make just one cheese, we make three, says Johanna, welcoming us inside the dairy.

The Svejdan Gårdsost (Farm Cheese) is described as a hard cheese with small holes, inspired by Swedish cheesemaking traditions.

The Svedjan Rustik (Rustic) is a blue cheese with a full, pleasant taste and soft texture, whilst the Smedjan Blå (Blue) is a rich blue cheese with a creamy texture.

A JOURNEY OF INSPIRATION The story of Svedjan Ost began in 2009. Back then, Pär and Johanna were involved in a different kind of farming. But the world around them changed, so did the conditions for life on the farm.

— We were not really sure which way to go, says Johanna. We had briefly looked into cheesemaking, but it wasn’t more than that.

— And then, on a farm in southern France, the penny dropped. That’s exactly how we wanted to live. The French way of supporting their cheese tradition felt natural and was also directly transferable to our natural conditions up in the far north.

CHEMICAL PROCESSES With the support of French master cheesemaker, Michel Lepage and Eldrimner, led by Bodil Cornell, Pär and Johanna began their journey towards becoming cheesemakers.

— We immediately decided that we wanted to make a long-term investment and grow slowly.

At our own pace. Making cheese is actually quite complicated and a lot of it is about chemical processes, explains Pär. It took us about two years to fully understand how things are connected. What happens to the taste at various stages and how that affects the final product.

— The milk is of course highly important, Johanna continues. We use morning milk and 500 litres is made into three hard cheeses.

— And it’s all interconnected actually. The

animals. The dairy. The care. The farm. The history. The buildings. The cultural landscape.

All of this affects your experience of the flavour, which is why you couldn’t make Svedjan cheese anywhere but here.

CULTURAL EVENTS IN THE BARN There is also a barn in the yard, Göte’s hay barn.

There, Johanna and Pär have been organising cultural events every summer since the early 2010’s. Sometimes, there has been theatre, other times music.

— Every year we hold an art event called ‘KOnstHAGEN’ with an open house, an arts and crafts exhibition and of course Swedish fika.

ENJOY SVEDJAN CHEESE IN SKELLEFTEÅ Svedjan Cheese is on the menus of several restaurants in Sweden. If you would like to buy some to take home with you, you can find Svedjan Cheese in several ICA supermarkets, at the Burträsk market hall, as well as at Nygatan 57’s Skafferi and Stadskällaren in central Skellefteå. The best place to get it, however, may well be the country store in Storkågeträsk, a stone’s throw from the farmhouse dairy.

Locally produced and small-scale ON MATTUREN (THE FOOD TOUR) i n t h e m i ddl e of the harvest month of August, 15 farms around Bureå, Lövånger and Burträsk will be opening their doors to the public. The idea is to let visitors discover the amazing range of locally produced food available in the region.

— We would like to introduce local, small-scale food production to a wider audience, explains Ulrica, chairman of the MatTuren association.

It is MatTuren’s fourth year. The event is highly appreciated and grows every year.

— New producers have joined and even more people wish to visit our farms.

Last summer, some farms were visited by up to 300 people.

— Then it’s full speed ahead, she says with a laugh. This year, food will also be served at a few selected farms.

MatTuren is held on August 13 between 11 AM and 5 PM. These are the farms you can visit during MatTuren:

BURTRÄSK SALUHALL (MARKET HALL). In the middle of Burträsk is the Burträsk Market Hall, an economic association with 11 members in the Burträsk region who have come together to sell their, often unique, goods in the market hall.

Here you will find bread, cookies, pastries, marmalade, honey, smoked products, pork from free-range pigs, mutton, beef and many charcuteries such as salami, a range of sausages, thinly sliced meats, hamburgers and sausage burgers.

At the farm in Järvtjärn you will find a bunch of happy free-range pigs playing in the mud. They walk freely in the pen that contains grazing areas, some forest and an old timber summer barn.

The farm is small-scale and here the whole family helps take care of the pigs. They are tame and happy to come up to you.

ON EUROPE’S MOST MODERN KARTING TRACK

One of the most thrilling high-speed attractions this summer can be found in Furunäs, less than 10 minutes outside Skellefteå. Furunäs is home to the Skellefteå Karting Arena, the perfect spot to determine who’s the fastest driver in the family.

— I don’t know if I’m up for it, says Mio, pressing his face against the fence.

Inside the fence, things move fast. Karts zoom along the track that is just over 1,000 metres long, at high speeds. Nearly 70 kilometres per hour on the straight sections. Tyres squeal. Engines roar.

Mio is seven years old. 128 cm tall. That means that he actually can’t drive, not even if he would have wanted to. Not alone and not on the big track at least. For that, you have to be at least 150 cm tall. Luckily, there are double-seated karts in which a child and an adult can ride together.

HIGH CLASS The Skellefteå Karting Arena is considered one of Europe’s best karting tracks, according to Benny Östholm who is responsible for rental karts at Skellefteå Motorsällskap, together with Sune Qvarnlöf.

— Because we are visited by professional drivers who also race in many other locations throughout Europe, we know that our arena is of a very high quality, even by international standards.

AWESOME Mio’s cousin Alfred rides together with his mother on the big track. It is fast, sometimes too fast and then they get help from the staff to get back on track again. Lap times are registered by a sensor in the kart and after you have finished your race you can see how you fared.

— Awesome, Alfred says with a smile as they finish. I want to drive more.

One race takes nine minutes. That might not sound so long but nine minutes of total focus and the pedal to the metal is quite intense.

Alfred’s mother has to rest. That’s no problem, says Mio, because he has just discovered that it’s possible to actually drive your own kart, even if you are not very tall.

CHILDREN ’S TRACK The children’s track is oval. Like a NASCAR track, but here there’s almost no age limit, as long you DE ST I NAT I ONS OF SW E DI S H L A PL A ND S KEL L EFTEÅ

can reach the pedals. Alfred goes first, then Mio. On the children’s track you race one at a time, for six minutes. The karts reach a speed of nearly 30 km/h and when you push the pedal to the floor it feels great.

— You went so fast, Alfred says as Mio crosses the finish line.

He managed to impress his big cousin. Mio is bursting with pride.

SWEET SUMMER FUN Karting is a popular summer attraction. Especially after warm days spent on the beach, then it’s great to race the excess energy out of your system.

Despite the fact that the arena often has many visitors, queues are rarely long. There is also a café at the arena where you can buy soft drinks, ice cream, hot dogs and hamburgers whilst you wait.

— Every season we welcome just over 20,000 visitors to the Skellefteå Karting Arena — and they often leave us with childishly big grins, Benny concludes.

EXPLORATORIET Skellefteå is home to Sweden’s newest Science Center. It is located at Nordanå and here science and technology play a central part as visitors are challenged to think outside the box. According to David, manager at the Exploratorium, it is a process of playing your way to valuable insights about how this fantastic world of ours works.

The Exploratorium has based much of its profile around the heart and soul of Skellefteå.

— We have permanent exhibitions on the subjects of forests, waters and minerals. Natural resources that have long been and still are important to Skellefteå. However, 34

the modern city is also an important part of our identity and that too gets plenty of room at the Exploratorium. To us, the process is more interesting than the result. You know, there are plenty of successes that started out as failures. The key is to remain curious.

And how do you make that work? The answer is: you have fun.

— Which is what we have here at the Exploratorium in Skellefteå. Even though anyone could have lots of fun at the Exploratorium, we are mainly geared towards children between the ages of five and fifteen.

TIME TO PACK YOUR BACKPACK AND

GO HIKING Getting just the right amount of physical activity will do you good. This is common knowledge. It is also said that nature is a healer for both body and soul. Maybe more so than ever in late summer. That’s when the colours begin to change, from sharply green to fiery red and orange. The air becomes wonderfully crisp and fresh, filling your lungs and your mind with energy. h i k i ng i s qu i t e s i m pl e . Step one: pick a trail.

Step two: Head out. Step three: Enjoy! If you go on a day hike you hardly need more than nice hiking boots, a small backpack and snacks. Preferably a thermos, with coffee or hot chocolate. And of course a sandwich or two, topped with generous slices of Västerbotten Cheese. Would you like to hike for longer than that? Then you extend your packing with a tent, a groundsheet and everything else you might need to hike over several days through the rolling forest landscape as healsome as it possibly can be.

NASALEDEN , MINERALLEDEN AND GRUVSTIGEN There are close to 20 different hiking trails in Skellefteå. Longest of them all is the Nasaleden trail. It spans 82 kilometres, between 36

Glommersträsk and Forsbacka. It is the last section of the transport road between the coastland and the silver mine in Nasafjäll, which was last in use a couple of hundred years ago.

If you do not want to hike the entire trail there are shorter subsections. Eight, to be precise. On the other hand, if you feel that 82 kilometres is a tad too short, it is no problem to continue on to the Gruvstigen trail at Forsbacka and walk another 18 kilometres to Varuträsk. For the most enthusiastic hikers, the Gruvstigen trail further connects to the Mineralleden trail which will take you from Varuträsk to Vitberget and into the city of Skellefteå.

THE KYRKSTIGEN HIKING TRAIL Another hiking trail where you will feel the beating wings of history is Kyrkstigen. It is a winding hike of nearly 40 kilometres between churches in Skellefteå and Burträsk. The trail has its roots in the fact that the first church was built in Skellefteå in the 14th century. At the time, Burträsk was part of Skellefteå Parish and people living in Burträsk had no other option but to walk to the church services at the country church in Skellefteå. In a way, you can still sense their struggles when you walk the Kyrkstigen trail today.

DID YOU KNOW... that there are more than 30 nature reserves in Skellefteå?

FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE FLOWER KING There are of course shorter options too. Take the Linné trail in Bureå for example. It is named in honour of Carl Linnaeus who came here during his journey through Lapland in 1732. As such, the Linné trail follows in the footsteps of the Flower King and is no longer than 3.5 kilometres, alongside the beautiful Bure River.

HIKE BY THE SEA The Furuögrund trail offers hiking close to the sea and will take hikers about 10 kilometres from the sunbathing paradise of Byske havsbad, along the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia, to Kolviken in Furuögrund. Furuögrund also has the greatest land uplift in all of Sweden, as the land rises from the sea at a rate of approximately 10 mm per year. During the summer season you can round off your hike with a tasty treat at Furuögrund’s popular harbour café.

OLD - GROWTH FORESTS AND MIRROR- LIKE WATERS Kalvträsk is not only home to charming cottage accommodation but also to a web of hiking trails, traversing the beautiful natural environment. The

trail system is cleverly designed so that you can get to various starting points by car, boat or canoe, giving you access to a far more varied selection of natural experiences. Kalvträsk and its surrounding forest landscape is just as suitable for day tours with simple accommodation in the cabin village as it is for longer hikes.

And the natural experiences in Kalvträsk are far from unremarkable. Enormous, mirror-like waters (weather permitting) amongst vast mires and wild forests that have been left to grow at their own pace. On their own terms. For hundreds of years.

At the summit of Vitberget, in the very heart of the nature reserve, there is also an old fire-spotting tower, 17 metres tall. To say that the view is breath-taking would be a severe understatement.

The forest hides a wealth of secrets. If you wish to venture really close to the wilderness, you can hike together with a guide. Adrenaline rush amongst the treetops Everything from an 80 metre zip line, guaranteed to send a thrilling chill down your spine, to children’s adventures only a few metres above ground. The Skellefteå Adventure Park offers exciting challenges for both young and old alike. u p a m o n g s t t h e t r e e t o p s you will find the adventures and challenges of the Skellefteå Adventure Park. There are six different high-altitude courses. Courses where you, safely strapped into a harness, move across a series of obstacles.

Some easy. Others far more difficult. What they all have in common is that they are at a significant distance off the ground.

— One of the courses is slightly lower, explains Tobias who is one of the people behind the Skellefteå Adventure Park and it’s about two metres up. That’s our children’s course. The highest one is also the toughest. There, you are about 12 metres up, which is practically amongst the treetops.

All courses have zip line, a kind of human cableway.

— The longest one will take you just over 80 metres, Tobias says with a smile. It is very high up, so it’s guaranteed to send a thrilling chill down your spine.

SEAMLESS SAFETY After you have slid into your harness, put on your helmet and gone through a short introduction together with an instructor, you are ready to begin the adventure. The advice is to start low and work your way up. Calmly and methodically. If you have the guts, that is.

— You will have to work for it, promises Andreas, founder number two. Adrenaline will be pumping and the lactic acid hits you quickly if you don’t find the right technique.

— The safety system is of course rigorous and seamless.

That means that you connect at the beginning of the course and then you cannot disconnect until you are through the whole course. Everything using the same safety harness.

— Really simple and really safe.

But of course, visitors get a little weak at the knees, at the start.

— You get hit by vertigo. In 99 out of a 100 cases it will pass pretty quickly but if someone feels they’re in over their head we will of course help them back down.

A VISIT TO THE MINE In the same area there is also a wilderness mine.

The mine operated between 1936 and 1940. Today it serves as a visitors’ mine where you can visit underground.

— Protective coats and helmets are of course available to borrow.

— If you do not want to go down into the mine but would still like to get a sense of the mining atmosphere, there is a smaller visitors’ mine above ground.

— You know, climbing makes you hungry. That’s why we have a café where you can get a soft drink, a cup of coffee and a bite to eat”, Tobias concludes.

Like a fish in water Skellefteå has a 300 kilometre coastline, the longest uninterrupted coastline in Sweden. There are also more than 1,500 lakes here and five rivers leading to the sea, three of which have wild salmon populations — such a concentration of wild salmon cannot be found anywhere else in Sweden. The Byske River is also one of the most well – renowned salmon rivers in Sweden.

Of course, sport fishers feel like fish in water here.

Since the city of Skellefteå is surrounded by world-class wilderness and fishing waters, it is only natural to have a world-class outdoor living shop too. At Cykel- och fiskecenter all the staff are outdoor living enthusiasts — in both heart and soul. i t ’ s a b o u t t h i n k i n g long-term and often out of the box, Tommy says, looking up from a box of new arrivals from one of the major outdoor living brands.

Tommy is the proprietor of one of Skellefteå’s most dedicated shops, focusing on outdoor living.

— Well, on cycling and fishing, he corrects me.

The Cycling and Fishing Centre, that’s what the shop’s Swedish name translates to. And all the people who work there can really be described as true outdoor living enthusiasts.

— With expert skills, Tommy adds.

FISHERMEN AND CYCLISTS The expert skills are part of the ambition to think outside the box.

— With us, you won’t meet any sales representatives. Not in the traditional sense. First and foremost, we are passionate cyclists or fishermen. This means 42

that you are just as likely to find us out by some fishing water or on a bicycle along a winding log drivers’ trail, as you are to find us amongst the store shelves.

We believe that we become a better company if we hire people who have practical, real-world experience with our products.

According to Tommy, this makes the company trustworthy and provides unique opportunities.

— Our ambition is to always have answers to our customers’ queries — no matter how technically challenging they may be. That is of course highly demanding but it also means that if we succeed, we have a good chance of building long-term relationships with our customers.

— If you just look at fishing, of course salmon fishing is a big thing. According to me, the Byske River is the best salmon river in the country. The Skellefteå region is also home to some of the nation’s most inventive pike fishers and lots of great waters for grayling and trout fishing. There is also the mountain world and all that it holds, just a few hours away.

TAG ALONG In practice, Tommy’s philosophy means that the shop extends well beyond their facilities at Södra Järnvägsgatan 47.

— Customers are more than welcome to hire a bike

and tag along with us. We usually go out three, four times a week. Spontaneous forest excursions. Nothing fancy but it’s a great opportunity to try it out.

Tommy also reveals that if you buy a fly fishing kit from them you are invited to an introductory fishing trip.

— We are leasing a nearby lake where we will give you a short introduction, to pitching techniques as well as fly fishing methods.

Running a physical store without an online shop in 2017 presents challenges — but also opportunities.

— We can’t compete by offering the lowest prices but if we can exceed people’s expectations when we meet them, we are convinced that we can offer something you won’t find in any online store.

Huskies on bare ground Huskies and dogsledding are normally associated with ice and snow but that does not really hold true with Mari-Line and Arnaud in Svanfors, about 60 kilometres outside Skellefteå. No, here you will meet huskies long before the first snow has fallen... in a clear August sky. You can feel that autumn is approaching. The air is fresh, crisp and almost cold enough to sting if you breathe too deeply. Saleta and Miguel park their car at the end of the road, by the large, roughly hewn signpost revealing that you have come to Lapland Emotions and nowhere else.

— From here on out, there are only trails and forest roads, Mari-Line says with a smile as she greets the visitors.

The dogs make no secret of the fact that they are happy to see Saleta and Miguel.

CONTACT With Lapland Emotions you get to be there from the very beginning and a large part of the experience is about creating a personal relationship with the dogs.

— Come inside, Mari-Line says and opens the 44

door to the kennel. But before Saleta and Miguel are ready to shake paws, there are a couple of rules to remember.

— Never pat an unfamiliar dog on the head, says Mari-Line. You would never do that to another human. Dogs require the same respect. Like this.

She gently strokes the shoulder and the front leg with her hand.

— Like a handshake, she says with a smile. This is Tweek, by the way.

Saleta bends down, following Mari-Line’s instructions. Tweek responds by gently pushing his wet nose against her cheek.

— You will get along well, Arnaud says, smiling.

WITH A SQUEAL During the snow free season Lapland Emotions replace the winter sleds with sturdy kickbikes or traditional mountain bikes. The setup is simple.

Two huskies per musher. Saleta is given a helmet and glasses. With Mari-Line’s help she harnesses Tweek to the bike. She does the same with Nortug.

— Remember, Arnaud says as Saleta sits down on her bike saddle, you will have to apply the brake a little. At least at the beginning. They can be a bit eager.

MORE REFRESHING NATURAL EXPERIENCES

SVANSELE BY BIKE In Svansele there are a number of biking trails, in and around the village. They wind along forest roads and trails, around fields and through forests, over brooks, creeks and mountains. They’re short, long, challenging and easy, there is a trail and lots to experience for everyone. Cycling is a healthy, environmentally friendly and quiet option for travelling to and from our forest facilities. Saleta does what she has been told but still the dogs reach a high speed surprisingly quickly. With a squeal of nervous excitement, she disappears, followed closely by Miguel behind the dogs, Juneau and Québec.

POT-BOILED COFFEE AND HOMEMADE BREAD The mushers really make the most of the forest roads surrounding Svanfors. Arnaud is leading the way. Next come Saleta and Miguel on one track each, on either side of a grassy strip in the middle.

Experiencing the vast forest landscape from the saddle of a bicycle is unbelievably enjoyable.

Additionally, your energy consumption will be next to none. Unless you are a dog, that is.

The mushers stop for a break by a calm stretch of the Skellefte River. Mari-Line is already there and she has prepared pot-boiled coffee and homemade bread. The sun is steadily sinking lower in the sky but is still pleasantly warming. Its rays shimmer softly through the trees whilst the dogs quench their thirst down by the river.

— Would you like to have a look, asks MariLine, showing a couple of pictures she managed to take of Saleta just as they set off.

She shades the camera display with her hand and both Saleta and Miguel burst into laughter.

— I was never that scared, Saleta giggles.

CYCLE AND PADDLE ALONG THE BYSKE RIVER Cycle with a guide across pine heaths and along rough log-drivers’ trails alongside the Byske River. Make a detour to a nature reserve where the old-growth forest has been left to grow at its own pace. Halfway through your trip you will switch to a canoe and paddle down the river, towards civilisation.
