Hugo Theodor Nilsson Sandkulla kept a personal journal his entire life. So when he left Finland in September of 1910, he wrote a detailed description of that experience. Using the last name Nelson, he eventually settled in New York. The Nelson family have generously shared Hugo's story with us. Read his story along with supplemental research provided by the Kusiner team.
Kusiner focuses on Swedish Finn Culture and emigration all over the world. We tell family stories, explore the origins of traditions, and how those traditions are interpreted in modern society. Kusiner strikes a balance between the historical and the contemporary to craft a full and rich narrative. Our world is small and connected in strange and interesting ways. The story is in the connections.
