PRESIDENT’S PERSPECTIVE Dear Alumni and Friends,

As I reflect on the past year, my heart is filled with deep gratitude to the Lord for His faithfulness and for each of you who remain so meaningfully connected to this university. I give thanks for the momentum we are experiencing across our campuses and for the shared conviction that Christ-centered education has the power to transform lives, shape character, and impact communities for His glory. Because of your prayers, encouragement, and generosity, we are walking through a season of purposeful growth, renewed vision, and God-given favor.

One of the most significant blessings this year has been the strengthening of SBU’s executive leadership team. I am grateful to share that Dr. Ken England has joined us as our Vice President of Finance and Operations. His wisdom, integrity, and commitment to faithful stewardship will help guide our institution with discernment and responsibility as we seek to honor the Lord in all we do.

We continue to pursue innovation with a spirit of calling and mission. This year, we launched our first undergraduate degree in artificial intelligence, equipping students to engage emerging fields with both excellence and a Christ-centered perspective. We also expanded our radiography program on our Springfield campus, meeting critical healthcare needs while living out our calling to serve others. Looking ahead, we are excited to introduce a minor in undergraduate research in Fall 2026, creating new opportunities for students to explore truth, cultivate curiosity, and deepen their understanding of God’s world.

Athletics and student life have also flourished as places where community, character, and leadership are formed. We relaunched our men’s golf program and welcomed new coaches in soccer and basketball— leaders who are committed not only to competitive excellence but to discipling and developing our studentathletes. In addition, we expanded our club sports offerings with eSports and pickleball, providing new avenues for connection, belonging, and joy in campus life.

This year’s SBUnited Giving Day was a powerful testimony of what God can do when His people come together with a shared purpose. Your generosity has provided scholarships and strengthened initiatives that directly impact our students’ lives and futures. Every gift, given in faith, has advanced our mission and extended our reach, and I am profoundly grateful for your partnership in this work.

CAMPUS NE SBU Announces First Artificial Intelligence (AI) Degree To better prepare students aspiring to work within the data science field, Southwest Baptist University is excited to announce that its Bachelor of Science in Data Science degree has become the Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science Degree.

“This program focuses on real-world skills that are highly relevant today, empowering students to solve industry challenges with AI and data-driven solutions. Through internships and real-life case studies, students in this program will acquire skills that are on high demand in the industry.” said Dr. Amos Gichamba, Division Head and Associate Professor of Computing.

SBU’s faculty continually monitor what is taking place in the field, and as new terminology is being used by the industry or new subjects emerge, programs are updated to meet the changing demands of the marketplace.

In addition to SBU’s faculty, two advisory boards made up of alumni and industry professionals are critical to the work of SBU’s computing department in maintaining programs that meet the needs of students and employers.

A 2025 report from the Brookings Institution showed that AI-related job postings have increased at an average annual rate of 29 percent in recent years, including a 100 percent increase from 2024-2025 alone. SBU’s updated AI/Data Science degree will prepare students to step into these positions post-graduation.

Southwest Baptist University is growing its collection of competitive club sports, offering new opportunities in eSports and pickleball for students to vie for accolades and championships against students from other colleges and universities.

Dr. Amos Gichamba has been an integral part of SBU for 7 years. Since 2021, he has served as the Head of the Computing and Mathematics Division. He has been instrumental in developing and teaching courses within our new Graduate Technologies programs.

eSports – The roster of the current team will be expanded to more than 20 students, with scholarships available and more game entries added.

Shae Miller has been part of the SBU family since 2016. She exemplifies what it means to “go above and beyond” for students, colleagues, and her community.

Pickleball – This new competitive team will field an initial roster of likely 8-10 students, also receiving scholarships.

Robbie Bryant, is the inaugural Servant Leader Award Recipient. This award has been created to recognize individuals whose quiet, steadfast commitment strengthens our community in ways that are often unseen.

SBU Expands Radiography Program to Meet Growing Demand

Minh Dinh (class of ‘24) has been selected to serve as the Associate Director of Club Sports at Southwest Baptist University. Minh will oversee the recruiting, administration, and coaching of the two current Club Sports teams: eSports and pickleball.

Southwest Baptist University is proud to announce a significant expansion and curriculum enhancements for its Associate of Science in Radiography (ASR) program.

Designed to address the increasing need for skilled medical imaging professionals, the program is increasing its total student capacity and streamlining the path to graduation, all while maintaining its core mission of preparing servant leaders in healthcare.

“I’m very happy Minh has stepped into this role.

We prayed for the Lord to provide someone with an entrepreneurial spirit, a high level of energy, and a deep love for SBU. We get all those things in Minh Dinh. I am excited to see how the Lord uses him to set a trajectory of success in our Club Sports programs,” said Dr. Woodyard, Vice President of Student Life.

Alumni Board President Kyle Seaney’s Journey of Faith, Community, and Impact

BY KATHRYN DUNHAM ’22 M.B.A. ’24 | Director of Alumni & Donor Relations Kyle Seaney ’09 didn’t always picture himself at Southwest Baptist University. His journey began in a season of uncertainty and personal challenge— one that, looking back, would shape his life in meaningful ways.

After high school, Kyle stayed close to home to attend community college while one of his closest friends began her first semester at SBU. A few months later, during fall break, everything began to change.

“Shortly after the first semester began, some personal struggles shook me pretty hard,” Kyle shares. “Around that same time, over fall break, my friend returned home with her welcome week group and invited me to spend time with them.” That visit left a lasting impression. “That sense of community was exactly what I needed,” he says. “I hadn’t even visited SBU, but I made my decision to attend the following Spring.”

Once on campus, Kyle quickly found himself surrounded by meaningful relationships and opportunities to grow. From late-night gatherings in the residence halls to shared ministry experiences, his time at SBU played a pivotal role in shaping both his character and his calling.

“There are way too many [memories] to say here!” he says. “Late night ‘24’ watch parties in Landen 2nd East, helping lead a Disciple Now with my best friends, and intramural sports are a few that come to mind.”

Some of his most impactful experiences came through the university’s Missions Office (now the Center for Global Connections), where he served both internationally and in major U.S. cities.

“My first trip was to Vanuatu in January of 2007,” Kyle recalls. “I also took 3 separate trips to New York City, leading one of them, where we assisted in ethnographic research for missionaries and church planters entering the city.” He continued, “Spending two weeks at a time walking through the boroughs and engaging with people of different cultural backgrounds made NYC one of my favorite places.”

Alumni Board Service Kyle’s connection to SBU deepened when he was invited to serve on the Alumni Board—an opportunity he embraced, even without knowing exactly what to expect. “To be honest, I had no idea what it was, but said yes,” he says.

The facilities have gone through some major renovations to accommodate more students and faculty in response to the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program moving from Bolivar to Springfield and the radiology program receiving approval to expand the number of enrolled students.

Dr. Brittany Hendrickson, Dean of SBU’s Mercy College of Health Professions, says collaboration and effective planning have made all the difference in preparing the Springfield campus for this season of growth.

“The updates and changes ahead are energizing, and I’m excited for what’s to come,” Dr. Hendrickson said.

“Collaborating with a forward‑thinking team made all the difference—we were deeply involved in space planning and are now using our building more effectively than ever, while intentionally planning for present and future growth. Working alongside such a committed group to bring this vision to life was incredibly meaningful, and in God’s timing, each step unfolded exactly as it was meant to.”

Campus Renovations Moving the DPT program from Bolivar to Springfield and the increased enrollment across health care programs required some significant facility updates to meet the growing needs of students. From the front desk to the Academic Resource Center (ARC) to almost every instructional space, there were changes made to 72 rooms on campus.

DPT Move The university first began offering a degree in physical therapy as a bachelor’s in 1993, then a master’s degree in 1998, before the current doctorate degree was introduced in 2005. In August of 2025, the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) degree program officially made the move from Bolivar to Springfield, MO. A significant number of prospective DPT students already come from the Springfield area as 16 | SBU Life | Spring 2026

The DPT program is now fully part of the College of Mercy Health Care Professions. The move created more opportunities for collaboration between all health care programs and the SBU faculty who teach them. For instance, recent curriculum updates have allowed DPT students to learn more about palpation, a technique where healthcare professionals use their hands to diagnose changes to the body that can point to underlying health issues.

Many students earn more than 50% already, and this commitment ensures that even more students get to that threshold. From the classroom to athletics, Dr. Kevin Schriver (’83) has established himself as a storyteller and respected mentor at Southwest Baptist University for almost 40 years. As he prepares for retirement and gets ready for the next stage of his life, Dr. Schriver reflects on his time at SBU. Dr. Schriver’s time at SBU began when he transferred in as a sophomore in 1980. After he graduated from SBU with a degree in psychology and religious studies, he married Denise Boutwell, (daughter of the late SBU Theatre professor Ron Boutwell), although the couple met after they both graduated. As he continued his education and started to gain practical experience while working for the Department of Mental Health at the Springfield Regional Center, Dr. Joe Shelton reached out to see if Dr. Schriver would be interested in an open position in SBU’s psychology department. “I always thought to myself, I’ll give it two or three years... obviously two to three years has become 37 years,” said Dr. Schriver. sayings from the collection: In addition to teaching, some of the other roles Dr. Schriver has held on campus include Dean of the College of Education and Social Sciences and Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) for NCAA Division II. Schriver’s Next Stage When Dr. Schriver married Denise, he also married into the theatre. In addition to teaching Theatre at SBU, Professor Ron Boutwell (Schriver’s father-in-law) started the Stained Glass Theatre in 1984 and wrote over fifty shows during his lifetime. One of the plays, God’s Mighty Oak, is based on the story of SBU’s founders.

The story is especially meaningful to the family since many of the struggles that SBU had in the early days, were

parallel to the struggles the Stained Glass Theatre faced. Throughout the struggles, there were many God moments, and the theater recently celebrated its 40th anniversary.

I always thought to myself, I’ll give it two or three years... obviously two to three years has become 37 years.

Though Boutwell passed in 2022, Dr. Schriver and Denise continue the family legacy by serving on the Stained Glass Theatre board and perform in the productions. “As a psychology type person, it helps me to understand people which helps me play people,” said Schriver as he explained his various roles at the Stained Glass Theatre, many of which include villains.

As Dr. Schriver looks forward to his retirement, he plans to continue to be involved with the Stained Glass Theatre, travel with his kids (all three are SBU alumni), spend time with grandkids, and see what God has in store for him during the next stage of his life.

THE CAMPUS T STARTED IT AL Southwest Baptist University entered a new chapter on March 19, 2025, as the university completed the sale of its historic Stufflebam Campus to Polk County Cares, marking a transition that honors the past while opening doors for future ministry and growth.

The Stufflebam property represents SBU’s original Bolivar location after the university relocated from Lebanon in 1879. In many ways, it was the soil in which the institution’s modern identity first took root, shaping generations of students academically, spiritually, and relationally.

Located on Pike Avenue just a few blocks north of SBU’s current primary footprint, the Stufflebam Campus has long held a special place in the institution’s history. Though the 8-acre property has been home to many past historic SBU buildings, it still includes what were Casebolt Apartments (the old science building), Memorial Hall, and the old President’s Home, which has housed the physical plant, security, and health center through the years.

Though modest in size compared to today’s campus, its historical significance is immeasurable.

Dr. Beverly Richardson, class of 1960, shared a fond memory of the dining experience. The first dedicated dining hall space was Ingman Hall. They sat at tables set up for 6 students. You ate at the same table with the same people for one month and then you rotated as a way to get to know other students.

They ate family style. They had two fabulous cooks they called “Mom and Pop.” They served in bowls like you were at home. If you ran out of something, you held up the bowl and they would fill it up. She said the food was fantastic and really made it feel like home.

Elizabeth Pace, class of 1959, remembers the original Pike Auditorium, which burned down in 1962. It had wood floors and students attended chapel with assigned seating. A favorite memory each semester was a student program in which they poked fun at the professors. That was a great memory for her. She also remembers the pool because she was a swimmer and enjoyed the use of the pool. But to use the pool there was a strict rule that a lifeguard had to be present. Continuing the Mission Polk County Cares, a faith-based Bolivar nonprofit focused on building relationships and strengthening individuals and families, plans to utilize the campus as an expansion of its outreach. In partnership with local churches, businesses, organizations, and community members, PCC will provide resources and support systems aimed at helping people achieve personal, family, and spiritual goals.

In this way, the grounds that once discipled college students will continue serving as a place of transformation, just for a broader segment of the community.

Embracing What’s Next For nearly a century and a half, the Stufflebam Campus shaped thousands of lives by hosting first college experiences, deep spiritual decisions, lifelong friendships, and academic milestones.

Though the buildings will no longer house SBU students, their legacy endures through alumni serving in churches, in their communities, and in professions around the world.

And now, through new ownership and renewed purpose, the same grounds will continue to echo with stories of hope, Christ-like service, and spiritual transformation. The Stufflebam Campus may be changing hands, but its ministry is far from over.

NT Q & A WITH SENIOR BEN STELKEN

Ben Stelken, a senior at Southwest Baptist University from St. Louis, Missouri, is preparing to graduate with his bachelor’s degree in exercise science with an emphasis in rehabilitative sciences. His journey at SBU started with football, but along the way he found his faith and a way to make an impact in the lives of the people around him. We sat down with Ben to reflect on his time at SBU.

Why did you choose SBU? So, what made me pick SBU was the fact that my brother actually played football here before I even came here.

At first, I really just wanted to follow my brother because that guy is my best friend. When I figured out that the school’s actually pretty cool, I thought, you know what? I’ll stay here. There was a while where I was thinking about transferring out when he left, but then I figured out that I have more family here than just him.

What did you major in?

My major is exercise science with an emphasis in rehabilitative sciences (pre-DPT). I picked it because I really like working out and I like helping people, so that puts the two together.

When I (originally) picked my major,

I wasn’t Christian. Now that I am a believer, I realized that there’s a lot of stuff I can do with this (degree) too. I can tend to the Lord’s flock and maybe help lead some people to him through healing them.

What was your faith journey like at SBU? I took a New Testament history class with Dr. Kimbrough and I started reading the Bible because I kind of had to (for class). And I was like, you know what? This Jesus guy is pretty cool and then I slowly started to kind of be more like him. After what was probably way too long, I accepted Christ in my heart; that was my sophomore year.

What is your favorite campus life event?

My favorite campus life event would be Homecoming week in general, but mud tug is my favorite. I mean, what’s not fun about playing around in the mud? It’s just fun to see the sense of competition that’s there, but also the fact that we’re all just coming together and having fun. No one takes it too seriously, except maybe the Meyer guys, you know? But, it’s all in good fun. It’s really cool to see how we can all get together and somehow worship God through playing tug of war.

What are your post-graduation plans?

My postgrad plans are to go to Physical Therapy (PT) school at the SBU Springfield campus, and Lord willing, get my Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT). After that happens, get a job, get a wife, settle down somewhere, and have some kids.

What is your best memory from your time at SBU? Honestly, just hanging out in the union with my friends. Like, there have been times where we stayed until it closes at midnight and we’re just sitting there talking or playing games. I’m really grateful that I’ve had that experience, because in the past, I’ve just stayed in my room. So, this past year has been really fun hanging out with my friends, getting to know them, and getting to kind of disciple them too.

How has SBU impacted your life?

I found Christ here, so that’s probably the best decision I’ve made. But also, SBU’s given me so many wonderful people in my life... I’m just so incredibly grateful that through this school, I’ve been able to just grow as a man, grow as a follower of Christ, and have so many great friends, but also just help people for Christ.

SBUnited Giving Day 2026 RECAP SBUnited Giving Day 2026 was a historic and inspiring day for Southwest Baptist University—marked by generosity, unity, and God’s abundant provision. With early donor momentum, the original goal of $200,000 was surpassed by 12 Noon, so the goal was raised to $300,000. By the end of the day, 239 donors from 31 states gave $318,900—exceeding the original goal by 59%. This represents an 87% increase in dollars raised over 2025 and a 22% increase in donor participation, achieving 96% of our donor goal.

SBUnited 2026 is officially the largest Giving Day in the history of SBU... by almost $150,000!

We are grateful for every individual who participated—Trustees, faculty, staff, alumni, students, parents, and friends. Each gift reflects a shared belief in the mission of SBU and a commitment to investing in our students.

Together, we are part of something bigger. As Dr. Melson says, “we see God’s kindness to SBU.” The Lord has been kind, working through Bearcat Nation to provide beyond what we could ask or imagine.

DONOR SPOTLIGHT:

DANA BROWN SBU Alumna | Innovator | Philanthropic Leader Dana Brown’s journey is a powerful testimony to how education, faith, and perseverance can shape a life of extraordinary impact. A Southwest Baptist University alumna who graduated in 1987, Dana credits SBU not only with preparing her academically, but with grounding her values—values that continue to guide her professional success and philanthropic vision.

Dana arrived at SBU with ambition and determination. As the first student to pursue a dual major in computer science and accounting, she worked closely with faculty to chart a path few had attempted before. Professors like Dr. Ed Clark and Dr. Tim DeClue played pivotal mentoring roles, while small class sizes and hands-on learning gave Dana a strong technical foundation. That preparation proved invaluable after graduation, when Dana entered Arthur Andersen and quickly distinguished herself 30among | SBU Lifepeers | Springfrom 2026 top universities around the world.

Her career would span decades of leadership and innovation. Dana helped launch new software divisions at Texas Instruments, co-founded a global software company that later went public and was acquired by Oracle, served as CEO of another company acquired by Cisco, and most recently led an AI-driven medical technology company focused on breast cancer detection, which was sold in 2025.

Today, she is preparing to launch a new AI venture that supports aging adults and their families— continuing her lifelong commitment to solving realworld problems with compassion and ingenuity.

That mindset carries through today. Dana is deeply passionate about alleviating poverty and expanding access to education, causes that are personal as well as philosophical. As a recipient of the Chancellor’s Scholarship, Dana knows firsthand how financial support can open doors.

I want my legacy to be about removing barriers—helping students access education so they can build a future and create pathways out of poverty.

Through alumni association board service, legacy planning, and intentional generosity, Dana Brown exemplifies what it means to give back. Her story reminds us that when education removes barriers and faith instills purpose, the ripple effect can reach far beyond one life— impacting generations to come.

“I’ve been incredibly fortunate in my life, and I know how easily it could have turned out differently. If I hadn’t received the Chancellor’s Scholarship, I don’t know that I could have afforded college. My hope is to remove barriers for students the same way they were removed for me—so they can access Yet Dana’s story is not only about professional education, build a future, and create pathways not success. Growing up on a farm in rural Illinois, Dana learned to give through her local Baptist church. SBU is named in their trust, not optional—it was simply how life was lived.
