Tips to help you cope The Corona virus pandemic not just effected people physically over the last year, but also put a mental strain on teenagers and adults. Here are some tips provided by Unicef to help you cope. 1. Recognize that your anxiety is completely normal If school closures and worrying headlines are making you anxious, you are not the only one. Actually, that is how you should be feeling. “Psychologists have long recognized that anxiety is a normal and healthy function that alerts us to threats and helps us take measures to protect ourselves”, says Dr. Lisa Damour, expert adolescent psychologist, best-selling author and monthly New York Times columnist.

“I have been making a list of all the books I’ve wanted to read and all of the things I’ve wanted to do for some time now”, says Dr. Damour.

2. Find a distraction “Psychologists know that when people are in chronically difficult conditions it’s helpful to divide the problem into two categories: things they can do something about, and then things they can do nothing about”, says Dr. Damour.

4. Connect with your feelings Missing events with friends, hobbies and sports is very disappointing. “These are major losses. They are very upsetting for all, including teenagers”, Dr. Damour says. What is the best way to deal with disappointment? Allow yourself to feel it. “When it comes to having a painful feeling, the only way out is through. Go be sad, and if you allow yourself to do it, you will feel better soon.” Everyone processes their feelings in a different way. “Some children are going to make art, some are going to want to talk to their friends and use their shared sadness as a way to feel connected in a time when they can’t be together in person, and some children are going to want to find ways to get food to food banks”, says Dr. Damour. It’s important to do what you feel is right and useful.

3. Focus on yourself Have you wanted for a while now to learn to do something new, to start reading a new book, or to devote time to playing an instrument? Now is the time to do all that.

5. Be kind to yourself and others Some teenagers are facing online bullying and violence due to coronavirus. “Activating bystanders is the best way to address any kind of bullying”, says Dr. Damour.

Spike in fuel prices now a Malmesbury Lions se Houer van Hoop wil verskil maak reality for motorists

95 Octane All fuel types will be more expensive in August when the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) adjusted fuel prices for August. This is according to the Automobile Association (AA) which was commenting on unaudited month-end fuel price data released by the Central Energy Fund (CEF). The fuel price is adjusted on the first Wednesday of every month. “The average Rand/US dollar exchange rate consistently trended upward during July and the weaker local currency will make it more expensive for South Africa to import fuel,” says the AA. The Association adds that over the same period, international oil prices averaged higher, despite a mid-month pullback. “As a result, the price increase will be quite hefty. We’re expecting around 83 cents a litre higher for petrol, 48 cents a litre for diesel, and also 48 cents for illuminating paraffin,” the AA

says. The Association says that these new increases will mean the price of petrol will have climbed nearly 23% in just seven months since January, while the price of diesel will have climbed around 20% and the price of illuminating paraffin will have increased by around 30% over the same period. “ULP95 cost R14.86 a litre in January compared to the expected new price of around R18.22 in August. In January a litre of diesel cost R13.00 compared to the expected August price of R15.56 a litre, while a litre of illuminating paraffin is expected to cost around R9.61 when the price is adjusted for August compared to its price of R7.39 in January. These increases will add to the heavy financial burden for South Africans already battered by weak economic conditions,” the AA concludes.

The annual Berg River Canoe Marathon kicks off tomorrow. An eight-strong team from the Martin Dreyer Citibank Change a Life Academy will make the journey to the Western Cape for the Berg River Canoe Marathon from 5-8 August. The team heading down for the race includes a number of paddlers that have taken on the four-day epic before, however the team also includes a few paddlers who will experience the unique challenge for the first time. For academy founder Dreyer, who has completed twelve Berg River Marathon's, it is unlike anything the paddlers will experience in KwaZulu-Natal. "The Berg is a completely different discipline because the challenge is different to anything the team would be used to," Dreyer said. "The distance won't be a factor because they have done numerous long training sessions but the weather and the tree blocks on the river will be unlike anything they have ever experienced. "If a cold front comes through and it gets cold, it will be a challenge because we don't get cold weather like that in KZN.

"As for the tree blocks on the river, they become very dangerous obstacles which the Change a Life paddlers will need to approach with caution and if necessary, take the conservative option and portage or where to punch through the tree blocks comes with tripping on the river which the local Western Cape paddlers get to do often. "You can get caught in the tree block and fall in and if the weather is cold it can be really difficult to recover from that. "We can in theory, try and prepare the team as much as possible for these challenges but they will have to deal with these obstacles on the fly during the race." Dreyer says that the 2021 Berg is an important motivation for the team during the winter months where river paddling races stop in KZN. "The Berg gives the guys a great goal to work towards during the cold winter, creating motivation to train through the middle of the year. "Not only is the race going to be an incredible experience but the entire trip will be invaluable

life experience. "Heading into a different province where some of the guys haven't even been and experiencing different cultures plays an important part in their growth as individuals," Dreyer added. The second edition of the Berg Ultra-Paddle this year offered Dreyer an opportunity to host a trial to see which of his squad would go to the Berg. "The Ultra-Paddle was a challenge for the guys but it wasn't a race so they managed okay because they could take a break when they wanted to but it definitely set the tone. "We tried to mix up the venues and we used Inanda Dam and Midmar Dam as well as the base at Nagle Dam throughout the event," Dreyer commented. The eight-strong contingent from the Martin Dreyer Citibank Change a Life Academy will renew its relationship with Western Cape wine brand Capensis, which has once again lent its support to the KZN team travelling to the Western Cape to take part in the Berg.
