Stand van die Wes-Kaapse damme Die damvlak van die Wes-Kaapse watervoorsieningsnetwerk het die afgelope week vanaf 61.3% tot 59.9% geval. Verlede jaar dieselfde tyd was die netwerk 52.5% vol. Die Bergrivierdam se vlak staan nou op 70.5% in vergelyking met verlede week se 72.2% en
verlede jaar se 73.6%. Die Laer-Steenbrasdam is nou 62% vol. Verlede jaar dieselfde tyd was hierdie dam 64.3% vol en verlede jaar 50.4%. Die Theewaterskloofdam staan nou op 55.5%, waar dit verlede week 56.8% vol was.

It's tough, but it is for the best
This may be the better of the two evils. It was always a toss between two very difficult decisions: either a ‘partial lockdown’ or a ‘complete lockdown’. It turned out to be a threeweek lockdown. It cannot be expected of government to make perfect decisions. What is expected is for government to act decisively; and that is what government did. After extensive deliberations, based on what they know, they took the best decision under the circumstances. We must make the best of it. A three-week lockdown can be regarded as a balancing act between containment of the virus, protection of South Africans and measures aimed at fortifying the economy against the inevitable disruption to manufacturing, productivity, growth and employment - as per the President’s Monday message. Some may argue that this measure amounts to an overreaction. However, taking cognisance of the situation in Italy, the current global epicenter of the pandemic, this seems not to be the case. The Italians blame inaction regarding restriction of movement and a lack of appreciation of the seriousness of the pandemic, as the reasons for the life and death predicament they find themselves in. Business will have to work with what they have been presented with. Firstly, many SMMEs cannot shoulder this financial burden alone; it is to be shared between government, business and workers. The President has given an undertaking that certain measures will be implemented to soften the blow for employers and employees alike. The details of these interventions have not been disclosed but are expected within days. However, due to the government’s fiscal constraints, there is not much government can do to alleviate the plight of those affected. Of concern is: what if, three weeks from now, we haven’t achieved the desired result? What happens if the infection curve shows a downward trend during the lockdown period, but increases again thereafter? What then? It is, however, not for us to answer this question now. What we have is three weeks in which we ALL have to make the best of this dire situation. Soveel te meer met Maandagaand se aankondiging, want jy weet dit gaan jou raak. Toe die woorde "21 day lockdown" geuiter is, het dit gevoel asof ons 'n in 'n tydperk leef wat ons nie ken nie. Dit voel vreemd. Ander-wêrelds, soos iets uit 'n film. Dit voel steeds onrealisties. Hoe is so iets dan moontlik in vandag se tyd en lewe en met die tegnologie waaroor ons as die mensdom beskik? Besighede sluit. Myne ook. Hoe nou? Wat gaan ons maak? Dadelik is die personeel se salarisse betaal, sodat hulle die nodige voorsorgmaatreëls kan tref. Dan begin jy bietjie verder te dink. Hoe gaan my besigheid hierdie oorleef? Hoe kan enige besigheid dit oorleef om vir 21 dae gesluit te wees en dit met die Desember-vakansie, wanneer gemeenskapskoerante gewoonlik sluit, wat nog voorlê. Paniek tree in, maar jy besef jy moet aangaan. Daar is nog 'n koerant wat op straat moet wees, voor die land sy "deure sluit". Hoe spandeer jy jou tyd? Wat maak jy vir 21 dae by die huis? Dis seker nou die tyd wat jy jou gesin bietjie beter gaan leer ken en hulle goeie en slegte kante meer gaan sien. Maar, ons bly glo en vertrou. En ons hoop. Ons hoop dat dinge beter sal uitdraai en dat alles weer fyn pikkewyn sal wees op 16 April. Tot dan.

Autumn is one of the most beautiful seasons to look forward to with its golden, brown and red blanket of dried leaves falling from trees. Crisp mornings enjoying a cup of coffee while taking in the scent of fresh air when strolling through your garden and noticing that the colour green is slowly turning into the colour of hibernation. “It is important to keep in mind that your gardening should not stop over the autumn and winter months, in fact autumn is the time to prepare the garden for winter, as well as getting it ready for the following spring” says Craig Hutchison, CEO of Engel & Völkers Southern Africa. “A garden, being a relatively inexpensive item to 'fix', does make a big difference when putting your property on the market as first impressions always lasts, and a beautiful garden immediately makes new homeowners feel like they can live here” Craig added. Your beautiful garden plants will most probably get destroyed by the frost in winter (depending on your location) if precautions aren't taken to protect them. The only way to prevent this from happening is by going out to the nearest nursery and purchasing some hessian and some stakes. By wrapping your tender trees stems you can protect them as this serves to act like a scarf protecting your throat from catching a cold. Cover all the tropical plants, especially large leaf plants such as the giant strelitsia and the tree fern for example. This, together with some mulch around the roots, will keep these precious plants nice and snug through all the frosty autumn and winter nights. Mulch is the shredding of leaves, sticks, grass and bark, any material placed over soil in the garden to help retain moisture and stop soil from eroding. Mulch also enriches the existing soil and should be layered 5cm to 10cm thick. There's no need to have to prepare your eyes for a sore sight over these colder months, as you can still enjoy a colourful pallet. One should plant your winter seedlings already in the autumn for example: snap dragons, pansies, violas, alyssum,
primulas, delphiniums, dianthus, foxgloves and petunias. If you have a vegetable garden, autumn is the time to plant winter vegetables such as onions, cabbage, broccoli, peas and broadbeans for those homemade soups. March is a good month to plant woody and twiggy plants like hardy trees, shrubs and roses, as there is still enough warm days ahead for them to settle before the cold sets in. Remember to water in the mornings to allow more time for water to filter through to the roots and get nice and warm with the day sunlight. This is also a good time to start moving some of the shrubs and trees that need a new location. While working on your winter garden don't forget to think about spring. Many plants can already be planted in the autumn and winter months to sprout when spring arrives. Some bulbs can go into the ground by March, though many will need to wait until the end of autumn. Plant your spring flowering bulbs at the end of April, and since tulips may want to show face quicker, wait until May to plant them. A very important note to insure the wellbeing of your precious garden is to do all pruning in the beginning of autumn and if any of these plants or trees are diseased in any way, cut the diseased sections off and dump or burn these cuttings, as they can cause problems and possibly infect the rest of your garden. Autumn is also a very good time to start a compost pile or to add to the existing one. There will be more than enough dead leaves, flowers, plants, grass cuttings and kitchen waste to use. This will help your garden significantly next season. Remember not to throw weeds or diseased plants into the compost bin. “If your garden is well taken care of during autumn, it will look lovely during winter and most definitely be a low maintenance garden to enjoy in spring. Met 'n staatsinperking wat Maandag deur President Cyril Ramaphosa aangekondig is, is Suid-Afrikaners besig om hulself voor te berei vir 21 dae tuis. Dinsdagoggend het die positiewe gevalle se syfer op 554 gestaan in vergelyking met Maandag se 402. Maandagaand, na die president se afkondiging, het talle na die plaaslike kruidenierswinkels gehaas om so gou as moontlik hul koskaste vol te maak. Alle besighede, behalwe dié wat toestemming vanaf die regering ontvang het, sal hul deure sluit tot 16 April, wanneer die skole ook heropen. Die Swartland Joernaal se gedrukte uitgawe sal ook gestaak word tot dan, maar intussen sal ons aanlyn voortgaan om inligting met die publiek te deel. Kenners het intussen gemaan dat SuidAfrikaners moet waak teen paniek en die verspreiding van fopnuus, aangesien daar 'n boete of tronkstraf, of albei, jou opgelê kan word.

Die leerders van die Laerskool Swartland op Malmesbury het net voor die skool gesluit het, hul jaarlikse kermis op die skool se velde geniet. Vanjaar se kermis was weer propvol aktiwiteite vir oud en jonk.
