Die Wes-Kaapse Regering Gesondheid het weens die Covid-19 pandemie 'n beleid ingestel wat besoekers by staatshospitale beperk.

Die rede vir die beperking is om persoonlike distansiëring te verseker in ons fasiliteite en die verspreiding van die virus sodoende te beperk.

Paarl Hospitaal het tot dusver, in belang van kraampasiënte, die standpunt gehandhaaf dat die voordele van 'n geboorte metgesel vir kraampasiënte beter is vir die pasiënt en is een geboorte metgesel toegelaat wanneer die moeder in aktiewe kraam was.

Met die pandemie wat tans besig is om sy piek te bereik, moet hierdie vergunning ongelukkig hersien word en sal Paarl Hospitaal voorts slegs

geboorte metgeselle toelaat vir: • kraampasiënte onder die ouderdom van 18 (vir ingeval daar komplikasies is waar die voog moet toestemming gee), • waar die pasiënt nie met ons kan kommunikeer nie en ons 'n metgesel as tolk benodig, • of in uitsonderlike gevalle waar die metgesel as aktiewe versorger moet optree (waar die pasiënt se geestesgesondheid of fisiese gestremdheid 'n aktiewe versorger noodsaak).

Ons versoek asseblief die publiek se samewerking in hierdie verband. Wees egter verseker dat hierdie besluit in die belang van ons pasiënte en personeel se veiligheid geneem is en dat die beleid hersien sal word sodra dit prakties moontlik is om geboorte metgeselle toe te laat.

The organisers of the two oldest wine competitions in South Africa have announced that both their wine shows are going ahead, but are being postponed to later dates.

This decision was taken following thorough deliberation about the presentation of their competitions in consultation with Vinpro, Wines of South Africa (WoSA) and other industry role players. The effect of the Covid-19 pandemic and the ensuing restrictions on all economic and other activities in South Africa have led to normal activities being changed and adapted in order to be able to proceed within this ‘new normal’ situation.

The organisers, namely the SA National Wine Show Association (SANWSA), are fully aware of the responsibility of the safety measures

required under Level 3 for these competitions to be able to proceed. Thorough protocols have been developed to be able to handle the wines entered in such a way that all health and safety requirements for the judges, officials and personnel involved in the tasting sessions are met.

Veritas is South Africa’s oldest competition for market-ready wines and has been held since 1991, during which time achieving the status as the country’s most authoritative of its kind.

Participants use the results and the accompanying bottle stickers as an excellent marketing opportunity. The Vertex Award for the overall top wine in the Veritas competition, was introduced in 2017.

The new closing date for Veritas entries is 9 September, while the judging will take place from 12 – 16 October.

Die mees geskikte tyd vir hierdie snoeitake is middel Julie tot middel Augustus. Indien u in 'n streek woon waar daar swaar RYP voorkom, kan selfs nog bietjie later gesnoei word.

Wat is die rede dat sekere plante gereeld gesnoei moet word. Snoei stimuleer nuwe groei en sekere blom- en vrugdraende plante produseer net beter met nuwe jong groei. Met die snoeiproses verbeter en beheer jy ook die vorm en voorkoms van jou plante.

Wanneer jy jou snoeitake aanpak, sorg dat jy goeie en skerp gereedskap het, 'n skerp en stewige snoeisker, 'n skerp snoeisaag en 'n ordentlike paar tuinhandskoene.

NB-NB-NB: Steriliseer alle snoeigereedskap na elke vrugteboom of roos wat gesnoei is, om te verhoed dat daar swamsiektes en/of virusse versprei. Hiervoor kan jy brandspiritus gebruik, spuit dit op die lemme of vee af met 'n deurdrenkte lappie.

• Nuwe jong hout produseer beter, probeer om dit te behou sover moontlik, moet dit nie verwar met wilde of waterlote nie,

laasgenoemde twee moet geheel en al verwyder word.

• Indien u te veel lote en takke op jou plante agterlaat, gaan daar heel moontlik baie vrugte en blomme wees, maar van 'n baie swakker gehalte en grootte.

• Sodra klaar gesnoei, spuit dadelik met KUMULUS (volgens aanwysings) om enige sluimerende swamsiektes en ander peste te beheer. (Kalkswael is nie meer beskikbaar nie).

• Wanneer klaar gesnoei is, verwyder alle snoeisels, los takke & lote, blare en ander onkruid om te help met die voorkoming en verspreiding van siektes.

• Alle besmette en siek plantreste moet of verbrand word of in sakke geplaas word om saam met huishoudelike vullis verwyder te word.

HOE SNOEI EK ?

• Verwyder eerstens alle dooie, skewe en siek plantdele.

• Oorblywende lote word uitgedun en tot ongeveer een derde van oorspronklike lengte teruggesnoei.

• Swak en minder produktiewe lote word ook verwyder.

• NB: Maak seker dat alle snitte ongeveer 5mm bokant 'n ogie is wat na buite wys, die snit moet skuins na binne wees sodat water kan afloop om infeksie te voorkom.

• Gebruik ook 'n snoeiwondseël vir die groter snoeiwonde, om plante teen infeksie te beskerm.

• Hoogstam-rose word net soos gewone bosrose gesnoei.

New and revised dates for What a woman should know school admissions when buying a firearm Just over a month ago, the WCED announced revised dates for the 2020 school admissions process in the Western Cape.

"We are now in the first phase of offers, and parents can expect to hear the outcome of their applications up to 22 June. It is crucial that parents accept their offers of places by 3 July 2020 at the latest, and the sooner they do so, the sooner schools can determine how many spaces they have left.

Parents can accept by going onto the system under Track applications and confirming their final choice, or they can hand in a confirmation letter/reply slip to the school where their application was successful.

If a child has been accepted at more than one school, the parent must confirm acceptance at ONE of the schools on the list where the application was successful. This is very important – if multiple places are being held for a single learner, this makes it much harder for other learners to find places. If parents do not make their choice by 3 July, the WCED will start allocating learners to their highest choice, and will remove them from the lists of other schools they applied to.

Unfortunately, the reality is that we don’t have enough space for all the learners that

apply. There is a high demand for places. 382 169 individual applications to schools were completed and submitted by parents during the month-long window for applications this year, an increase on last year’s figures. Even taking into account that parents submitted multiple applications, the demand for space is clear.

This means that learners might not be able to be placed at their first choice of school.

We ask parents to be understanding in this regard. They are of course welcome to contact their school of choice and appeal to the SGB, as well as ask that their child be placed on the waiting list in case any spaces become available.

Parents who receive notifications that their applications have been unsuccessful from all schools they applied to must remain calm. It is important to understand that the process is not yet complete. Once parents who have received offers of a place have accepted these, the WCED and schools will have a better idea of where there are still spaces available. Schools will apply their admission policies in terms of their waiting lists and they could accept learners who have been on waiting lists," according to Minister Debbie Schaffer.

The answer is always NO. This is called your basic self defence strategy.

You cannot always plan for all these dangerous questions and situations because life as we all know is unpredictable most of the time. This is why you must plan for the expected and be prepared for the unexpected.

Deciding which self-defence weapon to buy is probably one of the most important firearm decisions you will make. For those in the police or security industry, carrying a handgun everyday has become a way of life. For most South African citizens this is not true. Some are virulently opposed to firearm ownership and firearms in general and believe that all firearms must be banned. This is all good and well but once again only law-abiding citizens will adhere to such a ban. Criminals will do what they are doing now and just own unlicensed firearm, not obeying the law is there nature.

If you find yourself in a position where you have to draw your firearm to defend yourself, you probably did something wrong already by being there in the first place. The best way to survive an attack, robbery, murder, etcetera is non-attendance. This is where the planning ahead comes into effect. Easy to say but not always that easy to implement. The problem is when trouble comes looking for you at your home after midnight. When the worst comes to the worst and your life is in danger, having a firearm to protect yourself could really even out the playing field.

I personally feel that a small, easily concealable, 9mm or larger calibre is the way to go.

Big calibre firearms look great in movies but after carrying around a .50 Desert Eagle for a day or two it will most likely end up in your gun safe and that will be of no help at all when you need it most.

I like the snub-nosed .38 Special as a general self-defence option for the not so hardcore firearm owner. The fact that you do not need to be a highly trained firearm specialist to be able to use

it counts heavily in its favour.

The first thing that happens to you when you find yourself in a highly stressed situation is that you lose your small motor skills. Fight or flight takes control of your mind and panic sets in. Trying to remember if your firearm is loaded, carrying one up or do you still have to rack a round into the chamber or if the firearm safety is on or not, could be really problematic when seconds count.

A revolver only needs a trigger finger to work and half a brain – the half that says don’t shoot the friendlies. The drawback of course is that after five shots you would need a plan B. But those five shots could just save your life and get you to plan B. The compact 9mm pistols of today can easily hold 7 to 15 rounds and if you have another magazine, you could reload in seconds. I am asked on a regular basis which pistol make I would recommend for self-defence. Glock makes great firearms and they have a range that caters for nearly all handgun needs. Google the Glock torture test and you will see why I own one. It has been dropped, dragged, shot, frozen and badly treated beyond any normal use, and it still works. The CZ and Sig Sauer firearms have a very good reputation and their range of pistols has something for everyone. The important factor is that the firearm must work for you, not for your friend, brother or father and that It is reliable. Before buying a firearm test a few different types and see what works for you. Don’t try to save money on the firearm that you bought to save your life. That is penny wise and poundfoolish.

If you are a firearm owner already, go and get that firearm out of the safe and take it to the shooting range. Practice with your self-defence firearm on a regular basis. Drawing and shooting the firearm should become second nature.

Always know your legal rights as to when you may use your firearm.

Ultra Paddle replaces Berg Canoe Marathon

Credit: https://www.facebook.com/notes/berg-river-canoe-marathon/ultra-paddle-replaces-2020-berg/1957073057758396/ With the 2020 Berg River Canoe Marathon cancelled along with other sporting events due to the COVID-19 lockdown regulations, the race organisers have arranged a ground-breaking virtual race called the ”Ultra Paddle” that will allow canoeists around the world to be part of a show of solidarity, and share in the enthusiasm for the 59 year old classic event while raising money to support Canoeing South Africa’s food relief programme.

The four day, 240km race from Paarl to the Cape West Coast town of Velddrif, which was to have started on 8 July, always attracts a core of paddlers keen to test themselves against the river, weather and sheer distance of the race that has made it one of the toughest of it’s kind in the world.

The virtual race aims to make the multi-day epic accessible to a far wider audience than normal, by asking paddlers to cover the 240km before the end of July, allowing athletes to take on the challenge in more manageable

distances.

“One of the realities of this lockdown is that the average paddler is far less fit than he or she would be at this time of the year, and it would be irresponsible to ask them to cover distances like the 75km in a day as they do on the third stage of the Berg,” said race organiser Brandon Macleod.

“As an event, and as a sport overall, we will be fully compliant with all the lockdown regulations, and while we know that the paddling community is desperate to get back on the water, we have to be realistic,” he added.

“The Berg has always been about Ultra Paddling – taking on long stages for four successive days – and we want to keep that heritage alive during this abnormal year, particularly as we build to the 60th anniversary edition of the race next year.

“This will give paddlers a reason to grind out multiple kilometres for base training, and pounces on the eagerness of paddlers and

sporting enthusiasts to finally be a part of something again,” he explained.

Macleod said that participants will pay a R150 participation fee, for which they will get their Ultra Paddle race number, and on competition day a certificate from the Berg Marathon with a personal coupon entitling the paddlers to special benefits at the 60th anniversary edition of the Berg in 2021.

To put the event within reach of less fit paddlers and novices the Ultra Paddle will allow participants to cover a total distance of 50 kilometres before 31 July to receive their bronze certificate.

Participants who cover a total of 240km before the end of the month will receive silver certificates, and the serious paddlers who cover the full distance in four sessions will get awarded the gold certificates.

“The Comrades Marathon “Race the Comrades Legends” event showed that there is a great passion to get involved in these iconic

South African events by opening them up to a broader audience,” said Macleod.

Money from the participation fee will go towards Canoeing South Africa’s ongoing relief programme that is delivering food parcels to canoe club members badly affected by the rolling lockdown.

“Clubs around the country have received fantastic support from the federation through the provision of food parcels for members that have been badly affected by the lockdown.

By July their need will be great, and the injection of funds from the paddlers will be very welcome.

“For frustrated paddlers the Ultra Paddle is a chance to get back on the water and work towards a goal, while at the same time contributing to Canoeing South Africa’s goal of helping our members who really need it,” Entries for the Ultra Paddle will open on the Berg Marathon website next week.
