Top 10 study tips for grade 12 1. Have all your materials ready before you begin studying – pencils, pens, highlighters, paper, etc. 2. Be positive. Make sure your brain holds onto the information you are learning by reminding yourself how important it is to remember the work and get the marks. 3. Take a walk outside. A change of scenery will stimulate your learning. You’ll be surprised at how much more you take in after being outside in the fresh air. 4. Break up your learning sections into manageable parts. Trying to learn too much at one time will only result in a tired, unfocused and anxious brain. 5. Keep your study sessions short but effective and reward yourself with short, constructive
breaks. 6. Teach your concepts to anyone who will listen. It might feel strange at first, but it is definitely worth reading your revision notes aloud. 7. Your brain learns well with colours and pictures. Try to use them whenever you can. 8. Be confident with the learning areas you know well and focus your brain energy on the sections that you find more difficult to take in. 9. Repetition is the key to retaining information you have to learn. Keep going – don’t give up! 10. Sleeping at least 8 hours every night, eating properly and drinking plenty of water are all important things you need to do for your brain. Studying for exams is like strenuous exercise, so you must be physically prepared.
Study skills to boost your studying and learning Mobile notes Mobile notes are excellent tools for learning all the key concepts in the study guide. Mobile notes are easy to make and you can take them with you wherever you go: Fold a blank piece of paper in half. Fold it in half again. Fold it again. Open the paper. It will now be divided into 8 parts. Cut or tear neatly along the folded lines. On one side of each of these 8 bits of paper, write the basic concept. On the other side, write the meaning or the explanation of the basic concept. Use different colours and add pictures to help you remember. Take these mobile notes with you wherever you go and look at them whenever you can. As you learn, place the cards in 3 different piles: I know this information well. I’m getting there. I need more practice. The more you learn them, the better you will remember them.
Mnemonics A mnemonic code is a useful technique for learning information that is difficult to remember. This is an example of a word mnemonic using the word BALANCE where each letter of the word stands for something else: B – Best – doing your best is more important than being the best. A – Attitude – always have a positive attitude. L – Load – spread the load so you don’t leave everything to the last minute. Use a study timetable to plan. A – Attention – pay attention to detail. Only answer what is required. N – Never give up! Try, try and try again! C – Calm – stay calm even when the questions seem difficult. E – Early – sleep early the night before your exam. If you prepare well you will not needto cram the night before. Mnemonics are code information and make it easier to remember. The more creative you are and the more you link your ‘codes’ to familiar things, the more helpful your mnemonics will be.

Robotika-span behaal 'reuse sukses' in kompetisie
Die span bestaan uit Shariek du Plessies, Perswill Jantjies, Jaylee-Smit en Chante Marthinus met Kelvin-Jean Fortuin as leerkrag. Hulle het ook onlangs aan die FirstTech-kompetisie deelgeneem. Die Robotika-leerders van Wesbank Sekondêr op Malmesbury, het onlangs na Durban gereis en daar verder hul slag met hierdie vak gewys. Volgens onderwyser Kelvin-Jean Fortuin het dit alles begin aan die begin van die jaar met 'n SETA-kompetisie waaraan die skool deelgeneem het. Die groep het 'n voorlegging voorberei en ingedien en is toe gekies uit 'n groep van 700 skole landwyd om in Mpumalanga te gaan deelneem. Hier het hulle 'n vierde plek behaal. "Ons het baie geleer en baie terug gebring huis toe. Ons het geleer hoe om ons werksmetodes aan te pas en die leerders het geleer hoe om suksesvol te kommunikeer met mekaar. "So, al was ons die eerstes van die verloorders, het ons ontsaglik baie in die proses geleer." Fortuin het as leerkrag ook baie baat gevind by die kompetisie en geleer hoe om die leerders beter voor te berei. Hulle projek was baie suksesvol en juis hierom het hulle die geleentheid gehad om voor die nasionale parlement te verskyn om oor hul projek te praat. Hulle is genooi om as deel van die top 10-deelnemende skole aan die GOVTECH-konferensie deel te neem en ook daar, in Durban, hul projek met die gehoor en ander kundiges in die vakgebied te deel.
"Dit was 'n reuse sukses. Die mense het baie belang gestel in die toestel wat ons kinders ontwerp het. Dit is bygewoon deur baie sakepersone en hulle het baie belanggestel in ons projek. "Ons leerders het iets uit niks gemaa. Ander skole het projekte aan mekaar gesit met goed wat hulle reeds gehad het. Ons het letterlik van niks af iets gebou. "Die leerders was op die televisie en ook op 'n radiostasie." Volgens Fortuin is Robotika besig om vlam te vat onder die leerders van Wesbank Sekondêr en neem hulle eersdaags in Januarie aan 'n tech-kompetisie deel. Hierdie kompetisie word op 'n internasionale vlak aangebied. "Ek glo ons kan baie goed doen hier! Ek wil ons kinders oorsee neem!" Fatima Jakoet het ook 'n groot rol in die sukses en dryf van die groep gespeel. "Sy help ons baie om die nodige items te voorsien wat ons leerders nodig het om te kan presteer en om hul beste te kan lewer. Ek is so trots op alles wat ons skool nou bereik, vertel Fortuin. Fortuin se passie vir die vak en leerders spoor hom aan om die vak uit te bou en om selfs plaaslike kompetisies aan te bied. "Ons gaan die ding groot vat, ons gaan hom nie klein los nie."

Ek is veral bekommerd oor die misdaad in die area, dit is kommerwekkend dat dit al op so vlak plaasvind dat alle hulp genader moet word. Een van hierdie gevalle het plaasgevind op ‘n bos paadjie wat daagliks deur baie inwoners gebruik word om tot by die N7 te kom. Soos elke ander dag het die dametjie haar normale roetine gevolg maar op die spesifieke dag was sy gekonfronteer deur ‘n bos bewoner met sy honde, sy was aangeval en ongelooflik getraumatiseerd. Na dit onder my aandag gebring is het ek onmiddellik die munisipale wetstoepassers en SAPS gekontak en ook aangedring dat ‘n verklaring by die dame se huis geneem word. Ek glo aan aktiewe betrokkenheid en is belangrik dat selfs SAPS hul kant moet bring as dit by die dien van gemeenskappe kom. Ek wil van die geleentheid gebruik maak en my hartlike dank aan hul toon dat hul nie geskroom het om die dame by die huis te besoek nie. Dit gee my berusting om te weet dat daar nou ten minste 'n dossier is wat voor n regter sal moet dien wanneer die misdadiger gevang word. As gemeenskapsleier is ek baie attent op wat in die wyke aangaan, vernaam as dit kom by misdaad, en probeer ek al ‘n geruime tyd om aktief by die buurtwag ingesluit te word. Die meeste buurtwagte is op hul agtervoet as dit by politiek kom wat maar ‘n hindernis is. Ek is ongelooflik dankbaar dat ek gekontak was onlangs, om nie net deel te wees van die buurtwag nie maar ook Wesbank en Abottsdale
se buurtwagte saam te trek. Dit is ‘n verblydende gevoel om te sien hoe ons gemeenskappe saam staan om misdaad te bekamp. Daar is ook natuurlik ‘n geval waar mense onlangs vanaf n plaas geskuif is na ‘n woonstelblok. Dit is ‘n baie hartseer situasie, juis omdat baie van die mensies op einste plaas gebore was. Die skuif het nie net ‘n enorme impak op hul emosioneel gehad nie, maar ook op hul leefwyse en natuurlik die verandering van omstandighede. Hierdie mense was onbillik en onregmatig geskuif. Hul het soveel probleme gehad, onder meer n water rekening, wat ek met groot hulp van die munisipaliteit kon uitsorteer. Ons is tans in ‘n hofsaak betrokke rakende die hantering van die mense. Ek is ‘n baie nederige mens, ek dien my gemeenskap met als wat in my steek, ek skroom nie om enigiets wat onregverdig is aan te vat nie en stap die pad saam hul tot die einde. WCDM celebrates Day for Risk Reduction
Officers from Swartland Municipality’s K9-unit demonstrated the effective use of dogs in combatting crime in communities.
As part of International Day for Risk Reduction, West Coast Disaster Management Centre in partnership with various stakeholders exhibited services and demonstrations to aid safer communities and to create a risk conscious environment. Learners from Laurie Hugo Primary in Moorreesbug visited the centre in Moorreesburg to participate and witness various awareness and educational interventions. The Safety Coordinator for WCDM, Jacobus van Litsenburgh, explained why it is important to partner and educate communities for them to play a meaningful role in community safety. “We cannot create safer communities on our own. We need your help” said van Litsenburgh. Warrant Officer Smit, from SAPS encouraged the learners to embrace and support the police. “Don’t hesitate to contact the police when you spot something suspicious in your surroundings. We are here to help and keep you safe” said Warrant Officer Smith. A demonstration of a motor vehicle crash scene by the Emergency Medical Services and Swartland Fire and Rescue Services was one of the highlights of the day. These brave men and
women from the rescue services risk their lives to assist people in distress and by demonstrating their skill and commitment to perform their duties will hopefully inspire some of the learners to consider a similar career. The day was concluded with a tour of the high-tech Disaster Centre of the West Coast District Municipality. This facility is a prime example of how a central point for law enforcement, emergency services, disaster management and fire and rescue services can reduce dispatch time to communities in need. Under the theme of “fighting inequality towards a resilient future” the municipality’s Disaster Management Centre recently launched its Emergency Response and Prevention Centre with the objective to improve collaboration for better service delivery for all communities in the West Coast region. Head of Centre, Franquin Petersen, said that effective collaboration and partnerships can create more resilient and sustainable communities. “Today we involved government departments, private sector and schools to raise awareness but also to take action for safer spaces for all of us” said Franquin.
ECOS launched by Western Cape Veterinary Services The Western Cape Department of Agriculture's Veterinary Services recently launched its innovative Export Certificate Office System (ECOS). The launch coincided with the Western Cape's inaugural Veterinary Week, which focused on state veterinary services' role in the agriculture sector. One such role is export facilitation. Dr Vincent Henwood, Western Cape Department Head of the Veterinary Export Certification Office, explained that ECOS is an online electronic system which seeks to ensure compliance in South Africa's food and animal products industry. Dr Henwood said, "The platform provides permit templates aligned with importing countries' import permits, streamlining the export process, and ensuring compliance with international standards. ECOS enables tracking of products, including animal-derived ones, back to their source farms, thus ensuring transparency throughout the supply chain." Speaking at the launch, the Western Cape Minister of Agriculture, Dr Ivan Meyer, welcomed ECOS as an innovative platform which focused on improving the Western Cape Government's services to our customers. Minister Meyer said, "ECOS provides the customer with a 24-hour export facilitation service which reduces the export certificate application process from days to minutes. The Western Cape currently exports 55% of South Africa's primary agricultural products. "ECOS will also assist in increasing these exports to at least 60%. Exports contribute to foreign exchange earnings and a 5% increase in exports will lead to approximately 22 000 new jobs in the sector. Due to the location and history of South Africa, we have an extremely diverse
set of products, factories, and processes. We also have a complex food and export legislative system with different authorities (6 religious, state, and authorised signatories). This creates the possibility for synergies between authorities as they are often working on similar products and in the same locations," continued Minister Meyer. "In light of our endemic diseases, our rich diversity of wildlife, and our animal health system we need to have a systems approach to disease (human and animal) risk mitigation and international trade in animal products. The wait often negatively impacts product shelf life and quality. ECOS has changed this. While uploading my company's profile onto the ECOS platform was initially time-consuming, it now takes approximately five minutes to get an export certificate approved." Minister Meyer remarked: "We appreciate the feedback from our clients in the Western Cape, which has been invaluable in refining ECOS. Their feedback and support are crucial as we work together to revolutionize compliance, traceability, and export control in South Africa's food and animal products industry."
