TRONA Trona is an unincorporated community in San Bernardino County, California. In 2000 it had a population of 2,742. Trona is at the western edge of Searles Lake, a dry lake bed in Searles Valley, southwest of Death Valley. The town takes its name from the mineral trona, abundant in the lakebed. RANDSBURG mining R a n d s b u rg , Johannesburg and Red Mountain are three little towns along Highway 395 b e t w e e n Ridgecrest and Boron. They are the towns of the Rand Area, a gold and silver mining district named after the Witwatersand of South Africa. The Rand Area is the gold belt of Kern County. Randsburg and Red Mountain sprang from old
camps. Randsburg was Rand Camp in 1896. Red Mountain was originally called Osdick and became Red Mountain in 1929. Food and rooms are available in Randsburg. Places like the R a n d s b u r g General Store, the Randsburg Opera House and White House Saloon offer visitors relaxation, a cool drink and good food served
in a historical atmosphere. A trip to Randsburg wouldn’t be complete without stops at Red Mountain and Atolia, both located on U.S. Route 395, just south of Randsburg. Atolia
and Red Mountain also have a rich mining history, dating back to the late 1800’s. And some of the old mining structures are still standing.
