SO WHO TAKES Care of Local Wildlife? Back in the 1940's and 1950's, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, with the help of many dedicated volunteers, constructed wildlife waterers, known as "guzzlers". These were installed to improve habitat by providing water for many types of desert wildlife including quail, chukar, rabbits, fox, bobcat, songbirds, and even an occasional tortoise. These guzzlers consisted of an approximately 40' by 40' paved pad, at a slight tilt, so when it rained in the desert, the water would collect at the downside of the pad, and flow into a 600 to 800 gallon underground fiberglass tank. The larger the surface area of the pad, the more water stored in the tank. Within a 60 mile radius of Ridgecrest, 126 of these wildlife waterers were installed.

Now back when these guzzlers were constructed, the annual rainfall on the pad was sufficient to keep the guzzler full. However as time went by, our desert has become drier and is placing many of these guzzlers in jeopardy of going dry, thus putting the wildlife at serious risk of dying of thirst. Also, as the guzzlers aged, the pads and tanks needed repairs to continue to store what little rain falls on our desert. As rainfall diminished, it became necessary to haul water to these guzzlers in portable 200 gallon tanks using personal pickup trucks so that wildlife would not suffer and die. Water is critical to life in the desert. Guzzlers are a safety net to natural springs that can also go dry or be lost to erosion without regular maintenance. Many people think that these guzzlers only benefit game bird populations, but this is far from true. By providing water to all wildlife, the carrying capacity, (the number of animals supported by the habitat) will increase for all types of animals. Even those animals that do not drink at guzzlers, (such as eagles and falcons) benefit indirectly by increasing those prey animals that they feed upon. Water is life in the desert and by providing it in abundance, all animals benefit. In these days of drought, providing water to wildlife may be the difference between them living or dying.

Quail Forever (formerly Quail Unlimited) has made it their mission to keep these guzzlers repaired, and has hauled tens of thousands of gallons of water every year for decades, to support our local wildlife, often using their own funds to do these good deeds. This group needs our community support to keep our guzzlers operating and full of water, and to keep our wildlife populations thriving. On Saturday, April 6th, Quail Forever is having a fund raising
