Joyce Marie Mullis, born December 25, 1939, in Danube, Minnesota, died peacefully at home in Burden, Kansas, surrounded by her husband and family.

She led a full life in Ridgecrest, California, where she proudly served as the Certified Municipal Clerk for the City of Ridgecrest until her retirement in 1993. She was married to Robert Taft for 25 years, and later married Murray Daniel Mullis on December 29, 1994, in Ridgecrest, California. In her later years, they settled in Burden, Kansas and attended Burden United Methodist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Murray; two sons, Kim and Scott Schafer; stepdaughter Kimberly Taft Boydston; and stepdaughter Jeni McRay and family; and her brothers, Mike Kurtz and Allan Kurtz, who reside in Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her sister Avis Jensen and by her stepchildren Robert S. Taft, Robin Taft, and Debra Taft.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, August 26, 2025, at Wilmot Cemetery under the direction of Miles Funeral Service. Simple, peaceful, and with gratitude for a life well lived.

Best Fruit Cobbler

Ingredients

2 tablespoons sugar

2 tablespoons brown sugar

1 tablespoon cornstarch

1/2 cup water

1 tablespoon lemon juice

2 cups sliced peeled fresh peaches

1 cup blueberries

Topping:

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/4 cup sugar

1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup milk

1/4 cup butter, softened

Directions

Preheat oven to 375°. In a saucepan, combine the first 5 ingredients. Bring to a boil. Cook and stir until thickened, 1-2 minutes; stir in fruit. Pour into a 2-qt. baking dish. For topping, in a small bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Stir in milk and butter. Spread over fruit mixture. Bake until topping is golden brown and filling is bubbly, 45-50 minutes. Serve warm.
