The class will be composed of 12 weekly three hour sessions, meeting 5:30 pm 8:30 pm, held at the IWV IVW Water District office. Our goals will be to enhance and expand green plantings, conserve water in landscapes and gardens, and to reduce pesticide applications. We will cover practical topics pertaining to landscapes, orchards, and vegetable gardens, and offer plenty of time for Q&A and discussion. The class will be offered by John Karlik, a horticulture advisor with UC Cooperative Extension, who has lived in Kern County for almost 30 years. His experience includes work in the desert area of Kern County including California City, Mojave, Rosamond, Edwards AFB, Ridgecrest, Inyokern, and China Lake NAWS. In the beginning, Indian Wells Valley was without TV because the surrounding terrain prevented the reception. I moved to Ridgecrest in the fall of 1956 when there was one television channel. A group of volunteer engineers and technicians were building receiving/transmitting setups (One per channel) on Laurel Mountain and B Mountain to pickup the Los Angeles stations and rebroadcast them in the UHF frequency bands (Channels 14-83) to B
Mountain where they were rebroadcast to Ridgecrest and the Indian Wells Valley on the VHF frequency bands (Channels 2-13). As time passed, all seven LA (Channels 2-13) could be received with a VHF antenna aimed at B Mountain or, with a UHF antenna aimed at Laurel Mountain (Channels 14-83). I think channel 28 was transmitted from Laurel Mountain on channel 14. All the signals transmitted from Laurel and B Mountains were analog signals. The TV Booster was IT for television
in the valley until by the 1980’s two cable TV companies surfaced and later became one. Since then, two satellite TV companies have come to IWV. B Mountain is
still transmitting analog signals but during the past 5+ years, all transmission from Laurel Mountain has been changed from analog to digital by the TV Booster volun-

The digital transmissions from Laurel Mountain can be picked up almost anywhere in the valley with a quad bow tie UHF antenna and in many areas with an inside UHF antenna. These signals operate directly on all digital TV’s and generally, if the signal is received at Laurel Mountain as HD then it is retransmitted as HD, like the world series. Older TV’s can use the set top boxes available at department stores. The TV Booster volunteers use set top boxes on B Mountain to convert the new digital signals from Laurel Mountain to the analog format for transmission from B Mountain. The original eight analog channels from LA (2,4,5,7,9,11,13&28) have been expanded to at least 32 digital channels including the Ridgecrest City Council channel, all transmitted from Laurel Mountain. The IWV TV Booster meets the 1st Monday of the month at Vaughn Realty, 509 W. Ward at 5pm, and functions by public donations and volunteer efforts of board members and a broadcast engineer.
