ood afternoon and welcome back to the Swansea.com Stadium for this afternoon’s final game of the season against Queens Park Rangers. This season hasn’t been short of challenges, but there have been some brilliant moments along the way. This time last year we were welcoming supporters back into the stadium for the first time in 15 months following the Covid-19 pandemic, and this season saw a return to capacity crowds up and down the country which has been a brilliant sight for everyone involved in the game. That leads me on to the supporters and a huge thank you to the Jack Army who have been brilliant once again this season. The numbers you have travelled in up and down the country is nothing short of magnificent and the backing you have given the players, Russell and his staff over the course of the campaign has been massively appreciated.

This week saw the club host its annual player awards dinner to look back and celebrate the achievements of our players this season, and we were joined by supporters and staff and players from both the first team, the academy and Swansea City Ladies. It was the first time in three years that we have been able to host the event due to the pandemic, and it was a brilliant evening with some deserved winners including Cath Dyer who won the club’s Lifetime Achievement award, and the Alan Curtis Award going to two legends of the club; Lee Trundle and Leon Britton. The club have also joined with the Swansea Centre for Deaf People to celebrate Deaf Awareness Week. The charity, located on Neath Road, is at the very heart of the community and acts as a base for Deaf and hard of hearing people in Swansea, providing various activities as well as holding BSL lessons for those looking to learn the language. It also acts as a home for Talking Hands, a youth group which the club partnered with in March 2021.

And today’s game will see the club’s matchday social media output include football-relevant examples of BSL. Next week sees us host the premiere of ‘Tosh’ - the story of the club's rise under John Toshack Supporters have the chance to relive the unbelievable story of a man who guided the club on a miraculous journey from the Fourth Division to the top-flight in less than four years. The event will include a post-film Q&A with the filmmakers as well as Alan Curtis, Nigel Stevenson, Wyndham Evans, David Giles, and Leighton James. Tickets can be purchased HERE. Finally, I’d like to extend a warm welcome to the directors, management, players, staff and from QPR who have made the trip to Wales for today’s game. Enjoy the game, Julian

ood afternoon and welc ome back to the Swansea.com Stadium for our final Championship game of the season against Queens Park Rangers. To d a y ’ s g a m e i s o u r 5 0 t h competitive game in all competitions in what has been a challenging season in lots of ways. We arrived at the club just five days before our first game of the season against Blackburn, without a pre-season under our belts, and a lot of changes to the playing squad, style, culture and the demands of a Championship campaign. We knew there would be painful moments this season, but we also knew there would be some great moments too, and I hope we have given you some great days and memories along the way. But you, the supporters, have been absolutely incredible from start to finish and I want to thank each and every one of you. Almost every away trip for us is a long one but the miles you have covered and the numbers you have travelled in has been nothing short of remarkable.

Your support and understanding of what we are trying to build here has been greatly appreciated and we will continue to work tirelessly in our pursuit to give you a team you can be proud of. I’d also like to mention the staff behind the scenes who play such a pivotal role for us as staff and the players throughout the season and beyond. The staff at Fairwood, Landore and at the Swansea.com Stadium are the heartbeat of this brilliant football club and the support each of them has given us has been amazing. I want to take this opportunity to thank them all for their hard work and commitment to what we are building. U n f o r t u n a t e l y, o u r r e c e n t unbeaten run came to end with a hugely disappointing defeat against Nottingham Forest last Saturday. We have analysed the game and we have to be ready and make sure these things do not happen next season. We have been on a great run in the last two months, but I believe we will be better next season.

Our form sinc e J anuary has shown big progress since the start of the season, with some bumps in the road still, but we feel we are heading in the right direction. To d a y w e w e l c o m e M a r k Warbur ton and ever yone at QPR. They are a side who have enjoyed some good moments this season and were in the hunt for the play-off places for large parts of the campaign. Mark will be leaving the club at the end of the season and I would like to wish him all the best for whatever the future h o l d s fo r h i m . H e’ s d o n e a brilliant job there and has always conducted himself with such class and integrity. To d a y w e w a n t t o e n d o u r season on a high, in front of the Jack Army, and show you our appreciation for all your fantastic support. Enjoy the game, Russ

ood afternoon and welcome to everyone joining us from around the world for our final game of the Championship season against Queens Park Rangers. With the season coming to a close, we can reflect on the season which has been one of transition. There have been a number of highs and lows along the way but ultimately we feel there has been progression throughout the season which stands us in good stead ahead of next season. We were disappointed to see our unbeaten run come to an end at Forest last Saturday, but we will learn from it and make sure we don’t make the same mistakes next season.

Today sees Korey Smith and B e n H a m e r l e a v e t h e c l u b, a n d w e’ r e s a d t o s e e t h e m both go. They ’ ve both played huge parts in what we have been building on and off the pitch and they’re great people so we wish them both all the very best for the future. We want to end the season on a positive note so will be looking to end with a win to show our appreciation to the Jack Army for their magnificent support this season. Whether it is home or away, the support has been superb this season and we’d love to be able to end on a high to show our appreciation.

Today we welcome QPR to the Swansea.com Stadium, they’re a good side who were around the play-offs for large parts of the season. We’ll approach the game like any other game and will go into the match with the right mentality. Thanks for your support this season, we can assure you none of it goes unnoticed and we will continue to work relentlessly to be a team you can be proud of. We’re already looking forward to getting back in for pre-season and starting work on the next campaign to build on what we have already started this season. Enjoy the game today! Matt

DAVE DALTON S

o, the season comes to a close with today’s visit of QPR. With neither side having anything to play for, that can sometimes serve up an entertaining end of season encounter with whoever winning today finishing above their opponents in the final league table. And based on our past few games I can’t see this one ending 0-0… Earlier this week the club held its first annual awards dinner for three years at the Swansea.com Stadium. Around 500 guests and members of the club attended and enjoyed a wonderful evening hosted by the irrepressible Kev Johns who was in great form throughout. There were some great moments relived of our season and some truly deserving award winners, a full list of whom can be seen on the club’s website. Among them is the Swansea City Supporters’ Trust Lifetime Achievement Award which has been presented at the club’s awards night since 2007. It has recognised many of the people that have done so much for our club and our supporters and this year is no exception as it was awarded to former Trust Board member and current secretary of the Swansea City Disabled Supporters’ Association (DSA), Cath Dyer.

We are all delighted for Cath and this award comes after she won the prestigious EFL Supporter of the Year Award at the Grosvenor Hotel in London as recognition of one individual who has gone above and beyond in support of their club. And earlier this year Cath won the Football Supporters’ Association Jacqui Forster Memorial Award for her incredible efforts in helping and supporting her fellow fans. Despite the lack of activity on the pitch in the weeks ahead, the Trust will be continuing its work in a number of areas as we head towards our summer elections. We are fortunate to have a very diverse and enthusiastic Trust Board that as well as having regular meetings with the club management team are also involved in a variety of supporter related projects and joint initiatives. The work of the Trust is broad in both scope and volume and is being carried out by a small group of dedicated volunteers each also juggling family commitments, work and other responsibilities and I’d like to take this opportunity to publicly thank them all. In the coming weeks we will be launching a consultation with members and fans on the future strategy of the Supporters’ Trust.

We believe the opportunities for a closer working relationship with the club is more important than ever especially on the back of the recent announcement by the government on the Fan Led Review as reported here by the FSA. This strategy work will ask members and fans to consider the priority working areas of the Trust with the club, and as an individual organisation. We are committed to creating a forward-looking plan of activity to further the interests of our members and fans within the club and the community. Furthermore, we hope that this strategy will provide a reference point for the current board in the remainder of their term, along with any new members who join the Trust board as part of this summer’s annual election process which we will update our members on in June. We recognise that there are many different views on what a Supporters’ Trust should be and what they should be focussed on and there is no better place to share your own position on this by standing for election and joining the board for next season. If you’d like to find out more, email us at info@swanstrust.co.uk Have a good break #YJBs

After relegation from the Premier League in 2015, QPR endured a mixed period back in the second tier, but following the appointment of Mark Warburton as manager the R’s have been upwardly mobile over recent seasons They finished 9th in the Championship last term following an impressive second half of the campaign and the West London side were firmly in the promotion hunt this term until a recent poor run saw them fall out of contention. A run of just three wins since the end of January has put paid to QPR’s promotion hopes after an excellent first few months of the campaign had them right in the thick of the promotion hunt. Not helped by injuries to key players, they have lost nine of their last 12 games to fall out of the play-off picture and it has already been announced that boss Mark Warburton will leave his post at the end of the season.

ae hi’n anodd credu fod ‘na naw mis wedi mand heibio ers gêm gyntaf Abertawe o’r tymor oddi cartref yn Blackburn Rovers. Mae ‘na dymor arall wedi hedfan, ac er nad yw’r Elyrch yn brwydro am ddyrchafiad mae ‘na ddigon o resymau i fod yn obeithiol wrth edrych tuag at y dyfodol. Roedd Russell Martin wedi ei gwneud hi’n glir o’r dechrau ei bod hi’n gofyn gormod iddyn nhw orffen yn y chwe safle uchaf y tymor yma. Chafodd Martin ddim ei benodi i’r swydd tan ddechrau fis Awst diwethaf, ychydig ddyddiau yn unig cyn y gêm ar Barc Ewood yn erbyn Blackburn. Mae pob rheolwr yn dweud bod y cyfnod ar y maes ymarfer cyn i’r tymor ddechrau yn un holl bwysig, felly roedd Martin dan anfantais anferth gan na chafodd y cyfle i wneud hyn. O leiaf fe fydd y pethau yma'n wahanol y tymor nesaf. Mae Martin hefyd yn gwybod lle mae angen iddo gryfhau ei garfan dros yr haf. Gan fod disgwyl i Ryan Bennett adael y clwb a Finley Burns yn dychwelyd i Manchester City, mi fydd angen iddo arwyddo o leiaf ddau

amddiffynnwr newydd. Mae hynny wedi cael ei amlygu ar ôl iddyn nhw ildio 13 gôl yn eu pedair gêm ddiwethaf. Mae Korey Smith yn chwaraewr arall fydd yn gadael, sy’n golygu y bydden nhw’n chwilio am chwaraewr canol cae newydd. A dw i’n siwr y bydd Martin yn gobeithio arwyddo ymosodwr arall hefyd er mwyn ysgafnhau’r baich ar Michael Obafemi a Joel Piroe. Ar ôl sgorio cymaint o goliau y tymor yma mae Piroe wedi cael ei gysylltu gyda chlybiau yn Uwch Gynghrair Lloegr, felly mae’n bosibl mai her fwyaf Martin dros yr wythnosau nesaf fydd dal ei afael ar ei brif ymosodwr. Gan na fydd Abertawe yn chwarae eu gêm nesaf yn y Bencampwriaeth tan fis Awst dw i’n siwr y bydd sylw’r cefnogwyr yn troi at y tîm cenedlaethol dros yr wythnosau nesaf, a’r gêm yn erbyn yr Alban neu Wcráin yn rownd derfynol gemau ail-gyfle Cwpan y Byd. Mi fydd gan rai o gyn-chwaraewyr yr Elyrch ran allweddol i’w chwarae yn y gêm honno – Ben Davies, Connor Roberts, Joe Rodon a Joe Allen. Mae yna haf cyffrous o’n blaenau ni!

STILETTOS AND STUDS BY JULIE KISSICK

ere we are, the final game of the season is upon us. It’s been a strange old campaign, some real highs, and some forgettable lows. I’m not going to mention the latter, because we accept those as part and parcel of being a football fan. And, in most cases, they’re best erased from the memory as soon as possible because, ultimately, they don’t matter. Controversial? Not really, just common sense, surely? In the week when history reminds us of the ‘great escape’ of 19 years ago and promotion to the First Division under Tosh 41 years ago, it’s important to put this season into perspective. Those were two of the matches that changed the fortunes of the club. They were significant for different reasons; James Thomas’ hat-trick in the 4-2 win over Hull on May 3, 2003 preserved our status in the English Football League. More than two decades before that, Tosh did the seemingly impossible by steering us to the First Division three years after we’d been in Division Four. That day in Preston sent us on a journey we had never expected when the former Liverpool striker took the helm. For those of us who remember them, they were incredible times. We’ll hear a lot more about them in the next few weeks as ‘Tosh’ the movie is released. Inevitably, they’ll be compared to our promotion to the Premier League and we’ll recall with joy the play-off final against Reading at Wembley. Those games and those seasons, for different reasons, will always be supremely significant in the history of our club.

Thankfully, they don’t all bring the same emotional rollercoasters. Some seasons we’ve loved and others we’ve hated, some we’ve enjoyed and others we’ve endured, but always we’ve come back for more – because that’s football and that’s what being a fan is all about. This season hasn’t brought us promotion or relegation, but it did deliver us some memorable matches, not least the history-making double over Cardiff City. Seven goals over the two games equals a ‘demolition’, as club historian and Former Players’ Association committee member Gwyn Rees told me – and he’s spot on. T h i s s e a s o n , we’ ve w i t n e s s e d t h e reconstruction of the ‘Swansea Way’ of playing under Russell Martin, seen Joel Piroe hammer home 24 goals and watched Michael Obafemi evolve slowly but surely into a fans’ favourite. We’ve seen players return to the fold when they looked lost and we’ve found new heroes among us, both on and off the field. Our club got national recognition thanks to the great work of Carl Bradley and the Boot Room and Disabled Supporters' Association secretary Cath Dyer, who won the EFL supporter of the season award. Season 2021/22 might not go down in the history books as fortune-changing for Swansea City, but there are plenty of positives and surely optimism and excitement ahead of 2022/23, which will be upon us at the end of July remember, due to the Qatar World Cup. Enjoy the summer and see you soon, Jacks.

IN THE SECOND PART OF OUR IN-DEPTH INTERVIEW, RUSSELL MARTIN REFLECTS ON THE PROGRESS MADE OVER HIS FIRST SEASON IN CHARGE, AND GIVES AN INSIGHT INTO LIFE AWAY FROM THE DUGOUT AND THE TRAINING PITCH. CONTINUES ON NEXT PAGE....

W hat ’s the be st thing about Swans e a? The people, the beaches. Like I said, my family absolutely love living here. To the point where Gilly ’s kids and my kids have said ‘if we get sacked can we stay living here for a while?!’. Which is nice, they’ve got an awareness of the job and the precariousness of it. But the people have been incredible, the humility, how friendly they are, how honest they are. And I love the beaches too. Back to football, what was the best atmosphere in a game that you played? Scotland vs. Ireland at Celtic Park, we won 1-0. Shaun Maloney sc ored. It was just an incredible atmosphere. Playing against Ireland at Celtic, Deano the goalie coach was actually in the stands that day. An incredible, incredible atmosphere. And what was the best atmosphere in a game you’ ve m anag e d ? I’d say the C ardiff game earlier on in the season. The b u i l d - u p wa s b i g , a n d t h e n L akey (Huw L ake) made me feel so nervous before the game. He came to my office, bless him, and he was a n e r v o u s t r a n s m i t t e r. I f e l t alright until then. He came in and after that I felt terrible. He was probably trying to c alm you d own.

He was looking around, drinking his drink. I felt really nervous after that. But the boys were amazing, and the atmosphere was incredible. Everyone went out afterwards, and I went to Mumbles, to Underhill Park to play a bit of footy with the kids and stuff. Just a lovely, lovely day. If you could have played in any derby? What would it be? I was really fortunate to play in the Old Firm derby. I have a really bad record in it over two games, but the atmosphere and the occasion is incredible. I feel really grateful to have been a part of that at one point , even though it didn’ t go very well. The one I would love to see is B oc a J unior s and River Plate in Argentina. That’s on the bucket list, we talked about the bucket list e a r l i e r. I ’d l ove t o g o w h e n m y k i d s a r e o l d e r a n d t a ke t h e m t o i t . H o p e f u l l y a vo i d the violence and the chaos, but I’d love to experience it. M e s s i o r R o n ald o ? I don’t think it’s going to surprise you. Who do you think I’m going to say? M e s s i. Yeah, Messi. Both incredible players, and we’ve been really l u c ky t o g r o w u p w a t c h i n g them. But yeah, Messi, he’s a beautiful footballer.

He was. He always comes in before the game and I love spending some time with him, but that day he didn’t say anything.

Who was the best player yo u p laye d wi th ? Wes Hoolahan, or Wessi as the Norwich fans used to call him. Unbelievably talented player. Small in stature but the courage to take the ball anywhere. Some of the stuff he did was scary at times when it was in your own box, but an incredible talent. He got better and better with age really. It took a while to get going in his career, and then when it did, he was unplayable at times for us sometimes. Most Norwich players we played with would say Wes. Most Norwich fans I think would say he was one of the best they’d seen. On his day, he was incredible. Do you think you’re the best dressed manager in t h e EFL? I don’t know… No, no I don’t. A few people have asked me that before, and it’s like ‘you select your outfits’ and I don’t. I just wake up on a Saturday morning, see what’s been washed and dried, and pick what I feel comfortable in. There’s loads of better dressed managers than me. I t hi nk you ’d be u p th e re. I appreciate that. No one dresses quite as well as you, Soph. Your trainer collection is unbelievable. He’s not in the EFL, but I love Pochettino, he’s the main man. P ep? Yeah, he’s cool, isn’t he? Who would you say is your s p o r t in g i c on ? I had loads of different ones growing up. But I would say now, I really love watching tennis, so when I look at the guys who have been at the top for so long, Nadal, Djokovic, Federer,

PAGE 34

it’s been an incredible battle between them over the years. I love Federer, he’s so graceful. He’s unbelievably well-mannered, even when he loses, he’s a really good loser. He wasn’t at the start of his career, he’s changed a lot. I think he’s just beautiful to watch. The way he does things, his technique and style. He doesn’t just win, but it’s the way he does it. So yeah, probably Federer. Of all the managers you’ ve p l a y e d u n d e r, w h o w o u l d you say inspired you the most? I think who I played the best football under and who got the best out of me would be Paul Lambert. He had me at Wycombe and then he took me to Norwich. I played with him for I think it was five seasons in the end, so he was quite a big part of my career. It took a lot to earn his trust, in my first game for him he said I’d never play for him again, I was that bad in midfield. He tells everyone that story. But as it went on, I earned his trust and played a lot for him. He took me to Norwich, got to the Premier League, so he gave me that opportunity as well. I owe him a lot really, hopefully I repaid him over that period of time, but yeah, he was brilliant for me. What is your favourite footb all kit ever ? That’s a good question. I had a Tottenham kit, no one else liked it at all. It was purple, it was their third kit. It had like a flash through it of blue. I think Pony was the make. I absolutely loved it. I wore it for about 4 years until it got too small. Probably because I didn’t have any other kits. But yeah, I enjoyed that one.

SWANSEA CITY TEAM UP WITH SWANSEA CENTRE FOR DEAF PEOPLE

wansea City have joined with the Swansea Centre for Deaf People to celebrate Deaf Awareness Week this week.

the language. It also acts as a home for Talking Hands, a youth group which the club partnered with in March 2021.

Secretary for the board of management for Swansea Centre for Deaf People, Talina Jones, travelled to the training ground at Fairwood to teach players some football terms and phrases in British Sign Language (BSL) with some of those phases being used as part of the club’s social media output at today’s match.

According to figures from the British Deaf Association, more than 150,000 people use BSL in the UK with around 87,000 of these using it as their main language, and the club is working to ensure the stadium is accessible for Deaf people.

The charity, located on Neath Road, is at the very heart of the community and acts as a base for Deaf and hard of hearing people in Swansea, providing various activities as well as holding BSL lessons for those looking to learn

The club’s disability access officer Catherine Thomas said: “We first partnered with the Centre for Deaf People in 2020, but the pandemic put a hold on a lot of the things we had planned. We’re delighted to be in a position where we can pick this partnership up once again and celebrate Deaf

awareness week with our Deaf supporters and people across the city. “ We’re looking forward to doing even more next season.” Centre manager for Swansea C entre for D eaf P eople and project manager for Talking Hands, Helen Robins-Talbot, added: “It’s great to see the Swans making the Swansea. com Stadium and football more accessible to Deaf supporters. “ We h o p e t h i s p a r t n e r s h i p will c ontinue with the D e af Centre and Talking Hands in the future.”

en-man Swansea City Under-23s ended their Professional Development League campaign with a draw at Wigan Athletic, despite a brace from Cameron Evans. The Swans found themselves two goals up, Cameron Evans heading the Swans into the lead early, before the defender converted a second-half penalty to make it 2-0. But the dismissal of Azeem Abdulai brought the Latics back into the game, with Charlie Hughes converting from two set-pieces to level matters for the hosts. The draw sees the Swans end the season on a five-game unbeaten streak, but they will be frustrated not to have taken all three points after getting themselves into a strong position in the contest. The Swans started superbly as they had done in their previous outing against Colchester, with Evans once again getting on the scoresheet. A great set piece routine found Joe Thomas in space, allowing him to head across to Evans for his second goal in as many games. Thomas had the chance to make it 2-0 soon after, Lincoln Mcfayden finding the full-back at the back post with a low cross, but he couldn’t turn an effort on target. Tarrelle Whittaker entered the referee's book for a poor challenge on Divin Baningime, causing an extended stoppage that saw the Latics forward able to continue after prolonged treatment. But Whittaker was soon close to doubling the Swans lead, his curling effort from a tight angle being cleared off the line by Kieran Lloyd.

SWANS U23s 2 WIGAN U23s 2 Soon after, Ben Lloyd had a chance to get on the scoresheet, Mcfayden finding the midfielder in the box, only for him to drag his effort just wide. Wigan came out looking stronger in the second half, reducing the relentless stream of possession Swansea had enjoyed in the first half, with Harry McHugh coming close with a free-kick from distance. But the Swans would double their lead as they grew into the half, Kyrell Wilson had his shirt pulled and torn by his marker in the box, leading the referee to point to the spot. Evans stepped up and confidently buried the penalty into the top right corner for his second of the afternoon. However, just moments after the Swans had doubled their lead, they were reduced to 10 men. Captain Abdulai being shown a straight red card for a strong challenge in the middle of the park. The hosts immediately capitalised on their man advant age, McHugh finding Hughes at the back post, who tapped in to pull one back for Wigan.

Hughes soon had the chance to equalise, McHugh finding him in the box once again but this time he fired over the bar. But the defender would eventually have his second, converting Luca Latona’s corner at the back post to level for the Latics. Wigan continued to search for a winner, Joe Adams forcing an excellent diving save from Nico Defreitas-Hansen with just five minutes remaining. Despite the pressure, the Swans held strong to earn a point to bring their season to an end.

TEAM LINEUP Swans: Nico Defreitas-Hansen, Joe Thomas, Jacob Jones, Kai Ludvigsen, Lincoln Mcfayden, Cameron Evans, Azeem Abdulai (captain), Joel Cotterill, Ben Lloyd, Tarrelle Whittaker (Sam Leverett 46), Kyrell Wilson (Dylan Morgan 77). Subs not used: Ben Hughes, Filip Lissah, Corey Hurford.

SWANS U18s 1 WATFORD U18s 2

en-man Swansea City Under18s suffered defeat to Watford despite a second-half fightback in their final home fixture of the Professional Development League season.

Morgan had the chance to put Swansea ahead after he was sent through by Geoff Bony. Morgan did well to hold off two Watford defenders but couldn’t generate the power to trouble the goalkeeper.

The Hornets scored either side of half-time, with Adian Manning burying a free kick just before the break and Remerio Moulton scoring just three minutes after the restart.

The visitors first real chance came late in the first half, with Charlie Davies forcing a good save from Ben Hughes with his long-range effort. Moulton got to the rebound and flashed a cross through the Swansea six-yard box but couldn’t find a yellow shirt.

Iwan Morgan responded for the Swans, capitalising on a mistake from the Watford goalkeeper for a simple tap in. But the challenge for the Swans was made even harder after Josh Carey was given a second yellow card, and despite pushing for a leveller, they wouldn’t be able to find it. The defeat brought an end to an end a run of three consecutive wins for the under-18s, and this was their only loss in the month April Filip Lissah was handed the armband for the Swans for the first time since joining the club in the summer, taking the armband from Josh Edwards. The Swans started the game positively, with Corey Hurford rattling the crossbar with a deflected effort just four minutes in.

Zane Myers immediately led the charge on the counter-attack, bursting forward down the left before finding Bony on the edge of the area, but the forward dragged his effort just wide of the post. But it would be the visitors who broke the deadlock on the brink of half-time, Manning firing a free-kick into the bottom right corner. The Swans almost found an immediate response, Morgan breaking down the right and flashing a shot across the face of the Watford goal. However, Watford would punish the Swans again at the start of the second half, Moulton finding space down the left and poking a shot underneath Hughes to double their lead.

But Morgan would pull one back just eight minutes later, capitalising on a mistake from the Watford goalkeeper to give him a simple tap in to half the deficit. The Swans were almost level just two minutes later, Richard Faakye finding Morgan with a ball over the top, but Bony would fire his final shot just over the bar. Moulton came close to restoring the Hornets two-goal lead, striking the post with a shot from a tight angle. The challenge for the Swans was made more difficult as they were reduced to 10 men, Carey receiving a second yellow card for a late challenge with 27 minutes to go. Despite the man disadvantage, the Swans challenged for an equaliser, with substitute Aimar Govea causing trouble for the Watford defence. With just two minutes to go, captain Lissah struck the post, Charlie Veevers excellent delivery finding the wing back at the back post, but he couldn’t turn his shot in. However, the Swans fightback would not be enough for them to snatch a point.

TEAM LINEUP Swans: Ben Hughes, Filip Lissah (captain), David Roberts (Seb Dabrowski 73), Richard Faakye (Sam Parker 85), Jada Mawongo, Josh Carey, Corey Hurford, Charlie Veevers, Geoff Bony (Aimar Govea 73), Iwan Morgan, Zane Myers. Subs not used: Ewan Griffiths, Jack Cooper.

F

or the first time since the 20182019 season, the Swans go into the final game of the league season with little more to play for than pride.

JACK THE LAD

The past two seasons saw us involved in the mix for the play-offs as we completed the regular campaign. But that doesn't mean there aren't reasons to be excited as we take to the field against QPR today. Our unbeaten run may have come to an abrupt and disappointing halt at the City Ground last Saturday, but there is so much to look forward to as our season comes to a close. Some of the football we have seen from the Swans this season has been reminiscent of the best witnessed over the past 10 to 15 years. Russell Martin is bringing back "The Swansea Way". The team clearly isn't where Martin would like it to be yet, but there have been hugely encouraging flashes of what may be to come next year. What the manager has achieved this season was built on the back of extremely limited preparation time with the team when he was appointed last summer. With a full close season to hopefully strengthen the squad and a full pre-season to prepare the players physically, and to reinforce his philosophies, who knows what could be achieved next season? First of all, the Jack Army will be hoping the club will be able to hold on to its most prized assets this summer. I hate to single out individuals in a team sport, but Joel Piroe has clearly been an outstanding contributor. The club pulled off a genuine coup in bringing the marksman here. Having had a taste of what he can do this season, Swans fans will want lots more!

PAGE 52

S imilarly, Michael Obafemi has shown in recent months what he is capable of. Having the likes of Piroe and Obafemi spearheading the team next season is surely a mouth-watering prospect for all connected to the club. The news that Kyle Naughton recently extended his contract is a huge step in the right direction as far as next season is concerned. Hopefully the Swans can continue to hold on to their key players and add to the mix with some more shrewd signings. It's certainly going to be a summer like no other we have ever experienced before. When the curtain eventually comes down on the domestic season, those of us who also support the Welsh national team have a hugely exciting summer to look forward to. It's a huge shame that Ben Cabango won’t be involved in Wales' historic World Cup Play-off final next month, or the Nations League matches against the Netherlands, Belgium and Poland. But reports are encouraging the big defender will be backing firing on all cylinders for the start of next season. Excellent news give his form in recent months. Next season will start slightly earlier than usual due to the staging of the World Cup in Qatar during November and December. N e x t t e r m w i l l k i c k o ff o n t h e weekend of Saturday, 30 July and will then be suspended after the round of matches on Saturday, 12 November. The action will start again on December 10. So there's plenty to look forward to and get excited about during the weeks and months to come.

But let's not forget about today's match. It's always great to round off a season with a win, whatever else may or may not be at stake. And for me personally, any match between the Swans and QPR is a special occasion. I know having a second team is frowned on by many. But while the Swans will always be my number one club, I have a huge affection for QPR. You may be wondering what connection a Swans fan may have with the Hoops, but I spent the first two years of my life living a few hundred yards from Loftus Road. As you can imagine, I wasn’t a regular at the ground in my toddling days, and I have only ever been to the stadium when the Swans have been the visitors. Whereas some fans start supporting a club because they like their kit, because of a particular player, or purely because they happen to be the most successful around, I’ve always felt I should support my local club. And although my family moved back to our native South Wales when I was a nipper and I grew up supporting the Swans, I have always felt a strong bond with what is literally my hometown club.

QPR provided me with one of my best non-Swans related football days, and one of my worst – within a few weeks of one another in the spring of 2003. In early April, QPR travelled to Ninian Park for a vital League Two clash as both teams were chasing play-off places. I wasn’t able to get a ticket among the visiting support, so I had to make do with a seat in the Main Grandstand, alongside the Bluebird faithful. Not a comfortable position to be in as a Swansea City fan, supporting QPR against Cardiff at Ninian Park. It got even more uncomfortable in the 64th minute. With the home fans getting particularly agitated around me, Paul Furlong put QPR ahead to darken their mood further. On the inside I was leaping out of my seat and punching the air. On the outside, I was sitting calmly, desperately trying to hide the wide grin, which was spreading across my face. T he worst moment c ame in the 78th minute when Cardiff equalised. All around me leapt into the air. Fortunately for me, everyone was so busy celebrating and taunting the travelling QPR fans caged in the corner of the other end of the ground no-one noticed my lack of celebration.

If I had found it difficult to keep my emotions hidden so far, the ultimate test came in the last minute when Richard Langley put QPR back in front. An ecstatic Langley ran right over to the corner of the grandstand where I was, waving his shirt in the air above his head. Then he picked up the corner flag and shook it at the Cardiff fans around me. As you can imagine, having just conceded a last-gasp winner, they weren’t best pleased. My joining his celebrations was not recommended ‑ discretion being the better part of valour and all that. I managed to keep calm until I got back to the safety of my car before punching the air and screaming an almighty YES! If that was a high, then the play-off final the following month back in Cardiff was thoroughly miserable. Not only was it a dismal match, but seeing Cardiff win promotion to League One in their own city at the expense of QPR was unbearable for a Rangers-supporting Swans fan. So, who will I be cheering for this afternoon? There's only one answer to that question and it will always be the same. C'mon you Swans!

FORMER PLAYERS’ ASSOCIATION PAGE 54

O

n Tuesday the Player Awards took place here at the Swansea. com Stadium. It was glitzy, glamorous, and great fun with great company, and it raised significant funds for the Former Players’ Association. The FPA was officially launched last August and exists to unite those who have worn the club shirt and who wish to continue or renew their links with Swansea City Football Club. The FPA is free to join and is open to men and women who have played for the club. It is run by a working committee, including three former players - chair Lee Trundle, deputy chair Leon Britton and lifelong president Alan Curtis - as well as Esme Allchurch, widow of Swansea City great, Ivor Allchurch. Several of our former players, Curt, Trunds and Britts, along with Vic Gomersall and Wyndham Evans, took part in the Player Awards, co-hosting, captaining teams for the quizzes and popping up in the clips shown on the night, having been on co-commentary duty alongside Anthony O’Connell for SwansTV. We heard Wyndham’s dulcet tones and unmistakable enthusiasm as the nominations for ‘goal of the season’ were played. He couldn’t be more partisan if he tried! All five of them are so much more than former players, they are true fans of this club and their contribution has extended way beyond their playing days. Curt was interviewed by the awards host, Kev Johns. He talked about end of season events during his playing days, joking that it was “a real quick event held in the local pub” and involved just one award, namely player of the year – an award the great man himself won on several occasions.

He also offered an update on how the first 10 months of the FPA had gone. “It’s been great. The whole idea of the Former Players’ Association is that we get the old players back into the club and to make them feel part of the club and to enjoy a matchday experience. “A lot of them maybe finish playing football and then all of a sudden you feel a bit of an outcast. This [the FPA] is just a way of getting people in. We’ve got a real hard-working committee and they’ve done a marvellous job. “It was always something we talked about doing as ex-players but we didn’t really have the expertise to actually put something into operation but the committee now, with all the different skills that they’ve got, have managed to do it. “So, to any ex-players or if people know of any ex-players, we would love to see them. It’s starting to grow and its starting to build. “Obviously the pandemic destroyed a lot of the things we had planned but things are starting to grow now. “Times have changed from the era that I played in and Wyndham and Vic. The players now are comfortably well off whereas years ago we used to organise reunions and some of the boys were working shifts or working nights and they weren’t able to make it or they didn’t want to make it. “But now, it’s a great thing for the club and it will be something that is just going to grow and grow.” Curt explained that the money raised during the event would help to kick-start the work of the FPA in providing financial support to former players who find themselves in need. “It’s for players who may be struggling during difficult times, especially at the moment and if we can offer them some kind of financial assistance then that would be a great thing.”

In his time at the club, Curt has had many more roles than player and honorary president, a point made during the interview. His response: “I’ve been busy, Kev! I’ve always said you can only give back to people things that you get back in the first place. I’ve been fortunate and privileged to have been at the club for a long time and it’s never been a chore it’s just been lovely to be involved with the club.” Over the last 10 months we have featured many of the former players who have joined the FPA in the FPA pages of the club website. They include Jeremy Charles, who also went on to play for today’s visitors Queens Park Rangers; Martyn James, brother of another ex-Swan Anthony and cousin of Swansea City legend, Robbie and Roger Freestone, who played a record 563 games, bettered only by Wilfred Milne who played 586 for Swansea Town between 1920 and 1937. We have also featured some of the significant women who played supporting roles to the players, including Joyce Medwin, wife of Terry and Dolly ‘the tealady’ Phillips who was a favourite at the Vetch Field among players and fans alike. You can find all of the FPA interviews and features HERE. Ex Swans who want to be involved with Swansea City Former Players’ Association are asked to fill in the registration form HERE. The club is also keen to hear from relatives and friends of former players who are not online but who might still want to join the FPA. Anyone in this category is asked to call the FPA secretary, Catherine Thomas, on 01792 616420 or email catherinethomas@swanseacity.com
