JULIAN WINTER G

ood afternoon and welcome back to the Swansea.com Stadium for today’s Championship fixture against Derby County. A week ago we made history by doing the double in the South Wales derby – the first time any side has achieved this in 110 years – and what a special day it was. To win in the manner that we did was testament to Russell, his staff and the players and it was pleasing to see everyone celebrating on the pitch at the end – including the backroom team – for which everyone has played their part. I hope the suppor ter s have enjoyed the merchandise range that we have released to mark history, and we will have some activity around today’s game that will be a nod to last weekend’s success. The club was delighted to recently announce the return of the player awards dinner, for the first time since the pandemic on May 3 at the Swansea.com Stadium.

The event is always regarded as a highlight of the season, with this year’s dinner raising funds for the Former Player’s Association.

season, and I know there are football fans up and down the country who are wanting to see them succeed.

It was also pleasing to see that Swansea City and The Boot Room have been shortlisted for two awards at the prestigious Football Business Awards.

But their plight should serve as a warning to all clubs in the football pyramid about what can happen if financial mismanagement takes hold. The recent Fan Led Review is an area of governance that is crucial to this and I would encourage supporters to complete the surveys that the Supporters’ Trust have been posting recently.

The Boot Room was the idea of Swans fan Carl Bradley, who wanted to help provide football boots for children whose families were unable to afford to kit out their young footballers. The initiative to help children and young adults in Swansea and the surrounding community has now been extended to include The Kit Room until 2024, which will allow families to have access to kit and boots for their children should they have financial restrictions and need support. I’d like to extend a warm welcome to the management, players, staff and from Derby who have made the trip to Wales for today’s game. Derby’s story has been one that has dominated news outlets and column inches throughout this

The surveys cover everything from ownership and running of clubs, diversity, equality and inclusion, and the creation of an independent regulator to oversee football clubs in the future. Back to matters on the field and I hope that the atmosphere today is one of excitement and pride as we look to round off what has been a special seven days for the club. Enjoy the game, Julian

A MESSAGE FROM

RUSSELL MARTIN G

ood afternoon and welcome back to the Swansea.com Stadium for our Championship game against Derby County. There’s only one place to start my programme notes this week and that is with the events of seven days ago. Last Saturday we made history by becoming the first team to do the double in the south Wales derby, but, more importantly, we did it together. The coaching staff, players, backroom team and the supporters all played their part and I’m so incredibly proud of everyone connected to the football club. I have not felt as emotional after any game as I did last Saturday. It was a big build-up to the game, and rightly so, because it means so much to everyone. We all watched the supporters leaving the stadium on the buses and the energy and passion was incredible. From that point on, we knew we had to deliver.

To play the way we did showed tremendous courage and bravery, we showed the team we can be, and I hope it is a small reward to the supporters for the patience you have shown us. To see the staff and everyone enjoying it at the end of the game was amazing. It meant so much that we could do that for them. I s p o ke r e c e n t l y a b o u t t h e challenge of gaining consistency for the remainder of the season, and it was pleasing to secure another victory on the road at Millwall on Tuesday night. I think that performance was every bit as brilliant as Saturday, although maybe in a different way because of the emotional and physical energy we expended in the derby. To back it up with a display like that, against a team who had been in such good form at home, and are playing very well, was not easy and I’m so grateful for what the players are giving us right now.

We took a lot of criticism after losing at Sheffield United and a lot of it was justified, but how we have bounced back is testament to the character of the players, to how hard they work and, mainly, how brave they are and how willing they are to run for each other and show for each other. We can put in as much work as we can on the training pitch, but it’s being able to carry it out when you go to places with fans screaming at them that underlines the courage they have shown. Today we welcome Derby to SA1 and Wayne Rooney has done a great job this season under difficult circumstances, and we know we will have to be at our best once again. They are fighting for their lives to stay in the division and we will want to impose our game as we always do and hopefully give you another afternoon to be proud of. Enjoy the game, Russ

MATT GRIMES G

ood afternoon and welcome to everyone joining us from around the world for this afternoon’s Championship fixture at the Swansea.com Stadium. L ast Saturday ’s South Wales derby win felt incredible, there aren’ t many words that can describe it. For the fans, for the people of Swansea, you can see how much it means to them and to do the double in the way we did was exceptional. I alluded to it before the game, it’s hard to do the double over any team in a season so to do it over your fiercest rivals is even tougher. With the fixture being what it is, it’s an incredible achievement; I’m so proud of the lads, the staff, everyone. It was such a proud day.

The fans were incredible, they were absolutely outstanding as they have been all season. It was purely for them. Obviously we’ve put our names down in history, but the fans have got the bragging rights forever now. It was a great step in the right direction and we’ll all remember this season forever. It was brilliant to back that win up with another three points away to Millwall on Tuesday night. Millwall is always a tough place to go so to go away from home and get three points and a clean sheet was great. We knew it was going to be difficult especially after the highs of S at urday and with there being such a quick turnaround but I thought we approached the game brilliantly and controlled it.

Joel did superbly to get his 18th of the season, he’s an important part of the team and he’s showing how clinical he is. T he fans were superb onc e again and it’s a long way to go on a Tuesday night so we were delighted to be able to get the three points for them. We h a ve o u r t h i r d g a m e i n the space of eight days this afternoon and we’re looking forward to hosting Derby County. Derby will be fighting for their lives so we are fully aware of the challenge ahead and know we will have to be on the top of our game. T hank s for your suppor t as always! Enjoy the game, Matt

ADAM LEWIS T

oday’s programme notes write themselves. Where do we even start? Oh yes, with the absolute drubbing of our Welsh neighbours. Last Saturday’s performance will live long in the memory, not just for the score line, but also because it broke an almost unbelievable 110-year streak of neither team completing an in-season ‘Doube’. This streak shows that whilst there may have been leagues between us in quality at times, form books mean nothing on derby day. The only disappointment was that the game wasn’t on television for the Jack Army to watch live. I share in the bemusement and disappointment of many fans that this wasn’t a primetime fixture on Sky’s schedule, but credit to the club for securing the release of the full game for fans to watch retrospectively. Mark it under ‘Favourites’. That was followed up by a hugely impressive win against an inform Millwall team; six from six and suddenly things look much better. Full credit to Russell Martin and the team for two excellent performances - it seems that some rest and the opportunity to further

install the system on the training ground has paid dividends. Today’s visitors, Derby County, are a team that everyone is keeping an eye on this season as they fight to overcome what is an almost insurmountable obstacle. Huge praise must be given to Wayne Rooney and the relatively small squad he has managed to put together – what they have done is nothing short of miraculous so far and the football fan in me wants to see them survive relegation. Derby’s story should serve as a warning to all clubs in the football pyramid, especially in the Championship – they gambled heavily a few years ago in pursuit of the Premier League, and with a lack of accountability in the Boardroom, rife financial mismanagement went unchecked. Ultimately, the fans suffer most when this goes wrong and I’m sure most would agree that a single guaranteed season in the Premier League is not worth the risk of losing your club. This is an area that the Fan Led Review identified as being a critical weakness in the modern game – whilst millionaire owners lose money, fans lose the club they

have supported from childhood, people lose jobs, and ultimately the local community is worse off. If you haven’t already engaged with us on our FLR surveys, I encourage you to do so. The more voices we hear, the stronger the message becomes. Our surveys cover everything from ownership and running of clubs, diversity, equality and inclusion, and the creation of an independent regulator to oversee football clubs in the future. Speaking of surveys, we will soon be inviting our members to contribute to the future Trust Strategy. With the legal case in our rear-view mirror and a stronger and more productive working relationship with the club afoot, there has never been a better opportunity to refresh our goals and objectives, and outline what we would like to achieve with the club and as an individual organisation. We look forward to engaging with you on this in the coming months. Setting aside my earlier sentiments about Derby, we’ll all be hoping for a good performance and a win today to help our own ascension up the table. Enjoy the game.

he four pupils from P o n t a r d d u l a i s Comprehensive School were successful in the Foundation's local heats which asked students to come up with ideas to make football clubs greener. The students created a plan for the ‘Kick-off cup’, a reusable matchday cup which would reduce the amount of plastic waste on matchdays while also reducing all other single use plastic. A s winners, they were given the opportunity to represent the club and Foundation at the event in Watford and joined representatives from nine other

football clubs as part of the Project Development Day which provided all young people in attendance with the opportunity to further bring their ideas to life. The day included a stadium tour as well as workshops on sustainability and storytelling which were designed to help the students learn how to present their ideas. Curtis Grant, education manager at the Foundation, said: “ The pupils have been exceptional throughout the whole process, they have identified a real-life issue with a great solution to tackling sustainability in their local community.

They have been a credit to their school throughout and have represented us superbly, they should be proud of their work so far. Hopefully this is just the start!” L aura Wilc ox , a teacher at Pontarddulais Comprehensive School, added: “The carefully planned workshops allowed the pupils to share ideas, research what other clubs are doing to become more sustainable and delve deeper into tackling the use of single use plastic at the Swansea.com Stadium. It was a pleasure to see so many young people from all clubs being the driving force for change.”

HOW’S THEIR FORM?

W The Rams have been in the Championship since a record-low Premier League points tally of 11 saw them fall into the second tier at the end of the 200708 campaign. They have made four play-off appearances since, with their most recent seeing them miss out on promotion to the top-flight in May 2019 as they lost the Wembey final to Aston Villa. The East Midlands side have two First Division titles to their name, with successes in 1971-72 and 197475 coming with Brian Clough and Dave Mackay at the helm respectively.

Just two wins from eight games have come at t h e w r o n g t i m e fo r t h e R a m s , w i t h t h at sequence robbing them of momentum after getting within tantalising sight of an unlikely escape from relegation. They lie nine points from safety with six games remaining, and are still very much in with a chance of survival after victory over Preston last time out. It’s worth remembering that were it not for the 21 points of deductions they have received, the east Midlands club would be firmly ensconced in mid-table.

r na fydd Abertawe yn ennill dyrchafiad eleni, mi fydd y tymor yma yn cael ei gofio fel un cofiadwy gan y cefnogwyr. Yr Elyrch ydi’r clwb cyntaf i gyflawni’r dwbl yn ngêm ddarbi De Cymru, ac fe lwyddon nhw i wneud hynny mewn steil yn Stadiwm Dinas Caerdydd ddydd Sadwrn diwethaf. 'Da ni wedi gweld Abertawe yn chwarae’n dda mewn pytiau ar sawl achlysur y tymor yma, ond heb os nac oni bai dyma'u perfformiad mwyaf cyflawn o’r tymor. Mi oedden nhw’n gadarn yn amddiffynnol, fe lwyddodd Matt Grimes i reoli tempo’r gêm yng nghanol y cae, ac maen nhw’n edrych yn llawer mwy bygythiol yn y llinell flaen ers i Michael Obafemi, Joel Piroe a Jamie Paterson ddechrau chwarae’n rheolaidd efo’i gilydd. Un chwaraewr sy’n sicr wedi datblygu ers i Russell Martin gael ei benodi ydi Ben Cabango. Fe lwyddodd i gadw Jordan Hugill yn yr ymosod i Gaerdydd yn dawel, cyn gwneud yr un peth yn erbyn Uche Ikpeazu ddaeth ymlaen fel eilydd i gymryd lle Hugill. Mae Cabango yn edrych yn llawer mwy cyfforddus gyda’r bêl wrth ei draed y tymor yma, ac mi welson ni o yn camu mewn i hanner Caerdydd efo’r bêl fwy nag unwaith yn ystod y gêm. Ac wrth gwrs fe gymerodd ei gôl yn wych!

Dwi’n siwr fod 'na lot o ddathlu wedi bod yn dilyn y fuddugoliaeth honno, ond dri diwrnod yn ddiweddarach fe lwyddon nhw i ennill yn Millwall hefyd. Maen nhw wedi cymryd 10 pwynt o’u pedair gêm ddiwethaf, ac yr araf deg bach maen nhw wedi bod yn dringo’r g y n g h r a i r y n d d i w e d d a r. M a e h i ’ n drueni nad ydyn nhw ddim wedi llwyddo i gael cwpl mwy o fuddugoliaethau yn gynharach yn y tymor. Fel arall mi fysen nhw yn y ras am le yn y gemau ail-gyfle. Mae’r rhediad da o ganlyniadau diweddar yn cynnig gobaith ar gyfer y tymor nesaf, a'r nod i Russell Martin a’i dîm fydd gorffen y tymor presennol yn gryf fel bod ganddyn nhw rywbeth i adeiladu arno dros yr haf. Mi fydd y gêm yn erbyn Derby County yn her dda iddyn nhw heddiw. Er bod Derby mewn dyfroedd dyfnion oherwydd y problemau ariannol mae’r clwb wedi ei gael, maen nhw’n brwydro ddewr o dan arweinyddaith Wayne Ronney i geisio aros yn y gynghrair. Gan gofio cystal y mae Abertawe wedi bod yn chwarae a’r hyn sy’n y fantol I Derby, fe ddylse hi fod yn dipyn o gêm.

F

our-nil. Away. In a derby. Against our biggest rivals. 7 – 0 on aggregate across the season. What a result. What a performance. What passion. It was everything we’d dared to hope for and probably so much more than we expected. It was stunning and it left more than a few people stunned. Is it even possible to put into words what a result and a display like that means to a Swans fan? I tried to explain it to a friend of mine, who isn’t a football fan, (odd, I know). They couldn’t understand it. If you don’t love the game, it’s just a win or a loss; if you do, you know it is so much more, especially because it was a local derby. And if you don’t understand what the club means to the fans, that’s when people miss the point. It isn’t about bragging rights; a win like that encapsulates the work and effort of so many – from the players to the coaches, the media team to those who drive the team bus. Everyone has a part to play, not just the 11 men on the pitch. Russell Martin acknowledged the bus driver as an important part of the team on social media. It was a lovely touch and so fitting, another great example of inclusion and just what we have come to expect from the gaffer. The importance of everyone being part of ‘the team’ was never more obvious than it was against Cardiff. We often hear people who are not fans of the club talking about it being ‘special’ and that was written large all over the

performance, the build-up and the postmatch on Saturday. The tweet of the weekend though, has to go to none other than former Swan and current Swansea City ambassador and chair of the Former Players’ Association, Lee Trundle, who tweeted this on Sunday morning: “Morning Swans fans, hope you had a nice weekend. Did you get up to anything yesterday?” Brilliant Trunds, made me laugh out loud. Happy days, eh?! I caught up with former player Jeremy Charles ahead of the game to find out what the derby meant to him. "The Swansea v Cardiff derby has been renowned right through the years so it's naturally going to be a big game for the players as well as the supporters. "I think you prep for it the same as most games really, but obviously it has the added pressure of the supporters wanting to win so much. "I don't think I felt more pressure because it was a derby. I think you always got nerves ahead of any game but it's one of the big games you look forward to as a player and its one that the fans love and there's a lot of competition between the two clubs. "You want to go out and win every game and if you can do that it is a feather in the cap really." Yo u c a n r e a d t h e f u l l i n t e r v i e w with Charlo on the Former P layer s’ Association pages of this programme and on the club website.

SOMETIMES WHEN INDIVIDUALS REACH A LANDMARK OR A MILESTONE, IT CAN BE EASY TO FALL INTO HYPERBOLE OR EXAGGERATION. BUT WHEN IT COMES TO THE WORDS OF THOSE WHO KNOW THE INDIVIDUAL IN QUESTION, AND THOSE WHO HAVE SPENT DAY AFTER DAY WORKING ALONGSIDE THAT PERSON, THERE CAN BE NO DOUBTING THEIR VALUE AND SINCERITY.. CONTINUES ON NEXT PAGE....

T h a t ’ s w h y, w h e n i t c o m e s to Kyle Naughton, it’s best to consider the words of a succession of head coaches and team-mates to properly evaluate his impact over seven years, 250-plus appearances and more at Swansea City. Ta k e t h i s f r o m S w a n s b o s s Russell Martin: “Kyle is an exceptionally gifted footballer. He’s such a great person to have and he brings a calmness,” he said earlier this season. “He is one of our cultural architects, and it’s important to have experienced players who really believe in what they ’re doing and what we’re doing because it helps the people around him. “ When you have him playing, you have a better Ben Cabango, a better Ryan Manning, a better Flynn Downes, a better Matt Grimes … I could go through the team. "I think the player s will tell you how important he’s been for them, and for me as a manager and us as a staff he’s been brilliant , because everything we’ ve asked him to do he’s been willing to take on. “Hopefully he’s in a system where he can really flourish a n d r e a l l y e n j o y w h a t h e’ s doing. He’s towards the later stage of his c areer but he’s got a lot left to give.”

There’s also this from former head coach Steve Cooper: “He is a player that everybody loves - both the footballer that he is and the lad that he is,” he said during the closing months of last term. “He's a wonderful professional, a great guy and a really good player. He can play right-back, right centre-back, can build from the back with the ball, he is a real clever defender and sniffs out danger. “He never looks flustered and we're really lucky to have him. For an experienced player, he's shown me and the staff a lot of respect in what we're asking him to do, and I couldn't be happier for him. He deserves a lot of credit. “ H e' s a r e a l r o l e m o d e l fo r the younger boys, particularly in difficult moments. I can't speak highly enough of him because he's just a really good guy and a really good player, it's as simple as that really.” Then you take into account the verdict of team-mates like Wales international B e n C a b a n g o. “On and off the pitch, he’s the same. He’s so good to play next to because he’s so reliable. People don’t understand how good a footballer he is,” the defender recently told the club’s matchday programme. “He’s c alm and c ollected, he always does the right things and off the pitch. He’s such a good guy and h e’ s f u n n y as wel l .

PAGE 33

“I feel like this season, people are starting to see how good he is because that middle centre back position is a tough role and he does it so well. “Honestly, he’s one of the most technically gifted footballers I’ve played with. I think it’s just his calmness really, there could be five players around him but he’ll still find the time to get out of it, it’s crazy. He’s a wicked player.” No-one who has observed Naughton’s time with the Swans would disagree with any of those sentiments, and there are plenty more where they came from. Take a look back and the likes of Graham Potter, Garry Monk and Paul Clement were all effusive in their praise. Naughton has been there through good times and bad. Like any player, he has endured ups and downs, but he has emerged from it all as one of the most important players in this young squad and he brought his Swans appearance tally to 250 in our last home game against Birmingham.

Along the way he has played at full-back, wing-back, centreback and even in central midfield. That latter of those positions was fulfilled under P otter a few seasons back , and it was telling that, in an unfamiliar role, Naughton was one of the stand-out performers on those occasions. Not that any words of acclaim or otherwise would make a difference to Naughton’s outlook. He is not someone to seek the limelight, he is not someone who would want to make a fuss. But he is a committed professional who goes about his work quietly but highly effectively. A quick look at his statistics for this season underline the point, but more on those later. The former England Under-21 international first arrived in SA1 in January of 2015, during a season that would prove the high-water mark in terms of Premier League points accumulated and position finished as Monk’s side ended that campaign eighth. But the years to follow would bring more adversity and struggle. Naughton would help the Swans escape trouble in 2016 and 2017, notably scoring his first goal for the club in a victory at Sunderland which completed ‘ The Great Escape’ under Paul Clement. Sadly, there was no reprieve in 2018, with Naughton among those to suffer the pain of relegation. It was no surprise that confidence took a major hit for a number of players during this period, but the change of coach and a

PAGE 34

commitment to an enterprising, possession-based style of play was right up Naughton’s street. He embraced the opportunity of a fresh start and fresh ideas, and he was on the scoresheet in a memorable come-frombehind win at Millwall for the 10-man Swans. His stint in midfield followed s o o n a f t e r, a n d i t i s n o coincidence that he has been a trusted regular under Potter’s immediate successors Cooper and Martin. This season has seen Naughton continued to develop and evolve. His ability on the ball saw him handed the key position as the middle centre-back in a threeman backline. With the responsibility of building attacks, and attracting the opposition press, Naughton has thrived and the statistics are telling. Among Championship centrebacks, he is the clear leader when it comes to the total number of passes played and pass accuracy, and that is also the case for for ward p asse s played and forward pass accuracy.

CONTINUES ON NEXT PAGE....

Prior the draw against Birmingham, Naughton had featured in 24 of Swansea’s 35 Championship games this term. Martin’s side enjoy a win percentage of 39 when he plays; a figure which drops to just 23 per cent when the 33-year-old is unavailable. Swansea keep a clean sheet 43 per cent of the time when Naughton plays, but only 27 per cent of the time without him.

He averages eight passes per game (Naughton currently averages 80 successful passes a game) more than the next best tally, which is owned by Fulham’s Tim Ream.

They average 1.48 points per game with Naughton, but only 0.91 without, while the number of goals conceded climbs from 1.2 per game to 1.9 per game when the defender is missing.

His pass accuracy is a mightily impressive 91.4 per cent, but arguably the most revealing indicator of Naughton’s influence comes when you break down how Swansea fare with him compared to when he is absent.

But the facts and figures only tell you so much, what is not in doubt is the tangible difference Naughton has made to Swansea City. And, if Martin gets his way, there’s plenty more still to come.

ollowing the conclusion of our series o f ‘ H i s t o r y M a ke r s ’ fe at u r e s r e c a l l i n g Swansea City ’s historic 1980-81 season, club historian Gwyn Rees profiles one of the stand-out stars of that era; the classy winger L eighton James.

To any football fan, the sight of a player in full flow gliding down the wing, beating his man with seemingly consummate ease, is one to behold. And, in this respect, Leighton James was that tricky left winger for Swans fans of a certain age, able to beat his man at close quarters, and score some spectacular goals for both club and country. L eighton was a schoolboy prodigy, born in L o u g h o r, a n d r e p r e s e n t e d h i s c o u n t r y a t schoolboy and youth levels through to the full international teams in the coming years. On leaving school Leighton began his profe ssional c areer at B urnley, a club that was well renowned for the development of its young players. After signing for the Clarets in 1970, it wasn't long before the gifted winger made his firstteam debut against Nottingham Forest in November of that season. His incredible rise in the game was such that just a year later he won the first of his full international c aps against C zechoslovakia. A ltogether he would make 54 appearanc es for his country, scoring 10 goals, over a 15year period. A ft e r f i v e s e a s o n s , 1 8 0 a p p e a r a n c e s a n d 45 goals for Burnley his match-winning performances were attracting the attention of England's top clubs. It was top-flight champions Derby County who brought the flying winger to the Baseball Ground in a then club record deal worth £310,000. His time at Derby was successful, but just two seasons later the player moved once again to London and Queens Park Rangers, where he was swapped in a player exchange deal that involved Don Mason going the other way.

PAGE 40

But James never settled in London and, after just 28 appearances and four goals, Leighton moved back to Lancashire and Burnley in a £165,000 deal. Unfortunately for both player and club, Burnley were battling to stay in the Second Division by this stage. When the club finally fell into the Third Division at the end of the 1979- 80 season, Swans manager and Wales team-mate John Toshack paid Burnley £130,000 to bring the talented player to the Vetch Field to help with his dream of taking the club to the top-flight. Leighton joined a club that had a group of players who he knew from his time with the Welsh international side, and he made his club debut in the final game of the 1979-80 season away at Charlton Athletic, having the distinction of scoring the opening goal in a 2-1 victory. His first full season with the Swans was an

historic one, with James ending the season as top goal scorer with 15 goals, which included hat tricks against former club Derby County and Bolton Wanderers.

However, the second season at English football's top table proved disastrous, and a bad injury to James coupled with the increasing turmoil around the club - saw the winger move on a free transfer to Sunderland.

On the historic day when promotion was secured with a last-day win at Preston North End, it was a truly spectacular opener from James that left home goalkeeper Roy Tunks snatching at fresh air and set the Swans on their way to history.

He spent just one season on Wearside, before moving to Bury. A solitary season at Gigg Lane was followed by a campaign with Newport County.

After finishing his first season at the Swans as top scorer, Leighton continued his fine form in the club’s inaugural season in the First Division. His left-wing partnership with Yugoslavian Dzemal Hadziabdic (Jimmy) was flourishing, and this was a major contribution to the Swans surprising the pundits and finishing sixth in the division in a season where they also won the Welsh Cup.

But James’ final move would see him rejoin his first love of Burnley for a third time in 1986. He would hang up his boots in 1989 after 19 years in the game. There had been 650 games and 124 goals in the Football League along the way. James would go on to move into management with clubs as diverse as Morecombe, Ilkeston Town, Accrington Stanley and Llanelli, but it was as a football pundit on radio and television – where his willingness to speak his mind and not hide behind bland platitudes was guaranteed to enliven any debate - that the former player enjoyed a second career. But for Swans fans of a certain age, their memories will always be of the swashbuckling, mercurial winger with magic in his boots.

SWANS LADIES 1 ABERYSTWYTH TOWN WOMEN 1

S

wansea City Ladies were left frustrated as they were held to a draw by a resolute Aberystwyth Town Women side, and missed the chance to seal the Genero Adran Premier title. Despite creating all the chances, it was the visitors who took the lead just before the hour mark when Gwenllian Jones’ effort from the edge of the box looped into the net. Karmyn Carter drew the scores level when she headed in from Stacey John-Davies corner to set up a frantic final 15 minutes, but Swansea were unable to find the all-important winner that would have sealed another league title. The match got off to a cagey start and there was plenty of early pressure from the visitors in the opening quarter of an hour. As the match reached the 15th minute, skipper Alicia Powe drove confidently out from defence and played a wonderfully weighted through ball into the path of Chloe Chivers. The number 10’s cross to the back post was poked inches wide by Carter. This sparked a really strong period of pressure for the hosts who crafted a flurry of chances in quick succession. Katy Hosford

had a shot blocked, Chivers nearly found the back of the net direct from a corner and Carter’s first time volley from a JohnDavies cross was saved. A rare foray into the Swans’ half by Aberystwyth around the 25 minute mark saw them register their first shot on target of the afternoon. Rebecca Mathias sent the ball into the box from a free kick and it was turned goalward by Jones but it was a straightforward stop for Claire Skinner. Chivers blasted over from a John-Davies cross at the other end, while Carter was denied by another excellent defensive block, before John-Davies we nt o n a s e n s at i o n a l s o l o run which started in her own half and ended with her being denied by yet another piece of resolute defending. The second half began as the first half had ended. Within five minutes of the restart, Chivers had forced an early save from distance and hit the woodwork direct from a corner. John-Davies’ pace on the counter took her around a sliding challenge to set up a two-on-one but the forward went for glory -

when the better option looked to be a squared ball to Carter who was unmarked at the edge of the six-yard box – and blasted wide. A s chances came and went, the home side were becoming incre asingly frustrated and t h i n g s g ot wo r s e w h e n t h e visitors took the lead on the 63rd minute. Caroline Cooper scrambled to win the loose ball and picked out Jones, who was unmarked at the edge of the Swans box. Her effort looped high over Skinner and dropped just under the cross bar to give the visitors the lead against the run of play. But with 15 minutes still remaining, Swans finally found a way past keeper Ffion Ashman with Carter’s glancing header from John-Davies’ corner finding the far corner to draw the score level. It set up a frantic finale but there were no further goals and the Swans now await the r e s u l t f r o m t h i s we e ke n d ’ s match between Cardiff Met and Cardiff City Women where three points for the former will set up a title decider when Swans travel to Met for the final game of the season.

wansea City Under-23s relinquished a two-goal lead as they played out an entertaining draw against Sheffield Wednesday at the Swansea.com Stadium. Defenders Joe Thomas and Tivonge Rushesha netted in the first half for the hosts, with both players scoring their first goals of the season. Wednesday pulled one back through Liam Waldock before the Swans were forced to play the final 10 minutes of the game with 10 men, Ben Erickson was stretchered off the field after Swansea had made all three of their allocated substitutions. And the Owls capitalised with Bailey Cadamarteri equalising just two minutes later. The under-23s handed first appearances of the season to under18s regulars Kai Ludvigsen and Kyrell Wilson, with Ben Hughes returning to the bench following an injury. Swansea caused trouble from the early stages, Joel Cotterill’s dangerous corner forcing a good save from Pierce Charles in the Sheffield Wednesday goal. Thomas then put the Swans ahead after just 11 minutes, another Cotterill set-piece delivery finding the wing-back at the far post, giving him a simple finish for his first Swansea goal. Thomas continued to cause the Wednesday defence problems, his delivery finding the trialist forward, but his effort was deflected behind. Cotterill had the chance to make it 2-0, with excellent passing play between himself and Sam Leverett sending the midfielder through, but he dragged his effort just wide of the post.

SWANS U23s 2 SHEFFIELD WED. U23S 2 But Rushesha would find the second with a stunning strike, breaking out of defence before firing into the top corner from 25 yards. It could have been 3-0 before the break, Yan Dhanda sliding Lincoln Mcfayden in before the wing back pulled back to the trialist forward, but he couldn’t turn his effort on target. Cotterill came close to finding the back of the net once again in the second half, his low effort from the edge of the box striking the outside of the post. However, the Owls would find a way back into the game with their first real chance of the game, Jack Stafford only being able to clear a cross as far as Waldock, who fired into the bottom left corner. Substitute Erickson was forced off the field just eight minutes after being introduced, being stretchered off after challenging for a header at a corner. This left the Swans with just 10 men for the last seven minutes plus 11 minutes of injury time, having made all three changes.

And Wednesday immediately capitalised, Cadamarteri converting a low cross at the back post to equalise for the visitors. S h e f f i e l d We d n e s d a y w e r e themselves reduced to 10 men in the 98th minute, Paulo Aguas being shown a second yellow card after a poor challenge on Dhanda. Despite the Swans dominating for the majority of the game, they would be forced to settle for a point, but maintained their unbeaten run at the Swansea.com Stadium this term.

TEAM LINEUP Swans: Nico Hansen, Tivonge Rushesha (captain), Joe Thomas, Azeem Abdulai, Kai Ludvigsen (Ben Erickson 75), Jack Stafford, Joel Cotterill, Sam Leverett, Trialist (Kyrell Wilson 75), Yan Dhanda, Lincoln Mcfayden (Jacob Jones 66). Subs not used: Ben Hughes, Ben Lloyd.

Corey Hurford looked to level for Swansea, making an excellent run into the box before firing just wide of the post.

The Swans continued to push de spit e the s c oreline, with Veevers curling corner striking against the crossbar.

The young Swans fell to backto-back loses for the first time in 2022, with two goals in each half sealing the win for the U’s.

It would soon be two for Colchester, however, some good passing play down the right sending Yates through, with the right-back slotting home from close range.

Hurford came close for the third time in the game, Aaron Hillier’s cross found the forward, but another excellent save kept him out once again.

wansea City Under-18s suffered a heavy defeat to Colchester United Under-18s in the Professional Development League.

Kai Redgrave netted a brace, while Matt Yates and Kacy Parish were also on the scoresheet for the visitors. Charlie Veevers came close to putting the Swans ahead within the opening minutes, his curling effort from the edge of the box striking the outside of the post. Keeper Tyler Evans was then called into action in the early stages, making fantastic saves from Redgrave and Parish within the opening 15 minutes. But Redgrave would eventually put Colchester ahead, capitalising on a misplaced pass by Jada Mawonogo to curl a low effort into the bottom right corner.

Hurford came close once again just before the break, firing a low effort from the edge of the box that looked destined for the bottom corner, but Jaime Tedaldi made a great save to keep the visitors twogoal lead intact. The U’s would make it three just after the break, Evans doing well to save Jaiden Drakes-Thomas initial shot, but Parish was on hand to tap in the rebound to make it three. Swansea needed a response, and a ball flashed across the face of goal by Dan Watts just missed the outstretched foot of Iwan Morgan.

TEAM LINEUP Swans: Tyler Evans, Filip Lissah (Zane Myers 73), Ryan Bassett, Kai Ludvigsen, Jada Mawongo (Dan Watts 45), Josh Edwards (captain), Josh Carey, Charlie Veevers, Iwan Morgan (Rohan Davies 60), Corey Hurford, Aaron Hillier. Subs not used: Ewan Griffiths, David Roberts.

But it would be the U’s who would round off the scoring, Redgrave breaking to add his second of the afternoon.

I

know it would be polite of me to talk about today’s visitors Derby County, but I’m sure the vast majority of you won’t mind if I start by talking about THE DERBY instead!

JACK THE LAD

Of course, last Saturday saw the Swans beat our old rivals from up the road at the Cardiff City Stadium. Granted, a derby win brings the same number of points as any other league victory, but for us fans, they carry so much more value than just points on the league table. We are no different to any other fans who cherish vic tories over our nearest neighbours. But, of course, this particular derby day win was extra special. It carried a significance that no other derby win - anywhere in the country - will bring this season. In one of football’s weirder anomalies neither club had achieved the double in the 110-year history of the south Wales derby. Perhaps that statistic was an indication of how fiercely fought this match has always been. The fact that neither club could bear to concede two league defeats in one season illustrates just how much this particular rivalry means. There have been times when one club h a s b e e n d o m i n a n t ove r t h e o t h e r during the course of a season, but the achievement still eluded either side... until now! So it’s even more satisfying to have recorded the double on a day when just one league place separated the two teams. To do it in such emphatic style at the home of our great rivals! Well, it doesn’t get much better does it?

PAGE 52

And to have achieved the double by such a massive margin – an aggregate of 7-0 across the two matches! S at u rd ay ’ s a c h i eve m e nt i s j u st t h e latest in a series of remarkable events Swans fans – e specially tho s e who also follow the Welsh national side – have experienced over the past dozen years or so. I’ve supported the Swans and Wales for almost half a century, but the past 12 years have been truly been unforgettable and unprecedented. Just about everything I had failed to experience during the previous 35-plus years of following club and country has been achieved in the past dozen. I was lucky enough to see the Swans play in the old First Division and the early rounds of the Cup Winners Cup prior to 2010. But the achievements since then have simply been off the scale. Having doubted whether I would ever see the Swans back in the top flight again – especially after the introduction of the Premier League which seemed weighted in favour of the bigger, richer clubs - I was more than happy to be proved wrong. But we weren’t just promoted to the top flight, we thrived for a number of seasons, defying all the predictions that we would be one season wonders. One famous league victory after another was chalked up against the so-called giants of the Premier League as we more than held our own during the early seasons. Of course it wasn’t just in the league where we defied external expect ations. A L eague Cup win and qualification through to the latter stages of the Europa League were also achieved.

Who will ever forget that magical night at the Mestalla when we humbled Valencia 3-0? And on the international front, events have been equally history-making. Having watched Joe Jordan punch us out of the 1978 World Cup and the Vetch Field e l e c t r i c s l i t e ra l l y h e l p t u r n out the light s on our hopes in 1982, I thought I’d never watch Wales at the finals of a major tournament. Each disappointment, like Paul Bodin’s penalty miss in 1993, seemed to take the prospect further from our grasp. But qualification for two European Championships in the past six years – the first of which saw Wales unforgettably reach the semi-finals – proved international dreams can also come true. The events of last week have proved there’s still plenty of good times to enjoy and look forward to. I’m still finding it difficult to comprehend that I have just

witnessed Wales involved in a World Cup finals draw and the Swans do the double over Cardiff City within the space of a few days! I know Wales aren’t in Qatar yet. We have an agonising history of finding weird and wonderful ways of falling at the last hurdle, but just to be involved i n t h e d ra w wa s a m a s s i ve moment for Welsh football fans. Granted, from a Swans perspective, there has also been relegation from the Premier League to endure in recent years and life hasn’ t always been what we would have wished over the past few seasons since we’ve been back in the championships. But that doesn’t mean the magical moments we’ ve experienced over the past dozen years have come to an end – the past week or so has proved that. A 4-0 win at the Cardiff City Stadium for the Swans doesn’t make a season – especially when you look at our mid-table position – but a victory like that isn’t going to do any harm is it?

Some of the football played on Saturday was a further glimpse into what could be possible when this te am click s on a more consistent basis and if it is further strengthened over the close season. Hopefully the players can continue their outstanding derby form into another victory over Derby this afternoon as club looks to finish off this season in style and build for the next campaign. And in between now and then, those of us who also support the national team have a World Cup play-off final to look forward to. W h o k n ows , m ay b e we c a n extend this golden footballing era for both the Swans and Wales for another dozen years at l e a s t w i t h m o r e h i s t o r i c occasions like last week’s derby day delight and World Cup draw excitement to enjoy. What a time to be a football fan! C’mon you Swans!

hen you are born into a family of footballing royalty, it isn’t difficult to predict where your future career might take you. Son of the great Mel and nephew of the legendary John, Jeremy Charles was destined to grace a football field. And he did - the Vetch Field. It could hardly be described as regal or palatial, but it was home, the place the younger Charles began his career as a 16 year old back in 1976. A n d i t wa s e n t i r e l y f i tt i n g t h at h i s succession was marked with an appearance as a teenage super-sub who scored two goals in the 4-1 League Cup win over Newport County. He went on to be a regular in the side and even though football and life after it took him away from south west Wales, the club remains a significant part of his life. “It was my first club. I joined it as a 16 year old and had seven or eight great years with Swansea so it has always been important to me to keep in touch with the club,” he said. “It was my hometown club and to go out every week and play in front of those supporters meant a hell of a lot really. “I follow the club to this day, it’s the first team I look at. They’ve obviously done well over the years and got back into the top division a few years ago and they ’ ve found a way to keep playing good football even outside of the Premier League.” And being a part of the glory years of the rags to riches John Toshack era, when getting promoted was a regular occurrenc e, meant there were more than a few memorable matches to recall for Charles, who made 303 appearances and scored 72 goals for the club.

“ The big standout game would be have to be Preston [North End] b e c a u s e of t h e s i g n i f i c a n c e of t h e game. Going from the Second Division to the First Division for the first time i n t h e c l u b’ s h i s t o r y a n d s c o r i n g a goal – that is something that always stays with you,” he added. “ That would be the highlight for most of the lads who were a part of the team at that time I would have thought.” The 3 – 1 win over Preston saw Charles get the third goal. It was a headline writer ’s dream: ‘King Charles is history maker ’, while t h e f i r s t p a r a g r a p h r e a d : ‘J e r e m y Charles scored the most critical goal of his career three minutes from the end of a tense match at Preston to lift Swansea City into the First Division for the first time in their history ’. Charles has the honour of scoring the last goal in the S ec ond Division at Preston North End and the first goal in the old First Division, now the Premier L eague, on the opening day of the 1981-82 season. To s h a c k ’ s S w a n s t h r a s h e d a powerful Leeds United 5 – 1 at t h e Ve t c h F i e l d t o m a r k a fa i r y t a l e start to life in the top flight, with Charles netting before summer signing B ob L at chford c ontribut ed a hat-t ri c k an d A l an C u r t i s s e al e d t h e sensational start with a stunning shot ag ai n st h i s o l d c l u b. “I was a young lad starting my career at Swansea and going through all the divisions with the club and the players who were there at the time. Those years were a huge part of our live s re ally and it ’s always good to get back to Swansea and to catch up with the lads who are still there,” he remembered.

The ‘lads’ include Curtis and Nigel ‘Speedy’ Stevenson and the trio have remained firm friends since their playing days. Charles recognises the significance of those friendships after football. “I’m in regular touch with Speedy and Curt and last time I was down in Swansea Wyndham Evans and Jimmy Hadziabdic came out with us as well,” he confirmed. “I’ve always been in touch with Curt and Speedy more than anybody else really and if I’m coming down I give them a ring and we meet up so it hasn’t been difficult, we’ve just done it. “And for me they were the players I started my career with and it has been important to maintain those friendships throughout my life really. “I always wanted to play football and I was lucky that I got to do it, albeit for less time than I would have liked. To be part of that era and go through from the Fourth Division to the First and to make history for the club was something special for the players involved. “That’s something that we’ve got for life and we had a great bunch of lads, we had a great time and we enjoyed ourselves on the way through as a team.” Ex Swans who want to be involved with Swansea City Former Players’ Association are asked to fill in the registration form HERE. The club is also keen to hear from relatives and friends of former players who are not online but who might still want to join the FPA. Anyone in this category is asked to call the FPA secretary, Catherine Thomas, on 01792 616420 or email catherinethomas@swanseacity.com
