Swan Village Bowling Club
SwanCare Centres Auxiliary
Social Dance
With warmer weather hanging on, it’s hard to decide as to when we’ll be changing over to daytime bowls. A long-range forecast indicates we have a few more days of warm to hot maxima still ahead, even nudging into the high thirties. That being said we expect to make the change early April (possibly as early as 4th April). Keep an eye on the club notice board for the exact date.
We extend a welcome to all new residents and invite them to be members. It’s $10 a year, so if that’s for you speak to the committee members on meeting days and we can organise to make that happen. The role of the auxiliary is to raise funds for our care centres.
The next dance will be held on Easter Saturday 16th April. Doors open 6.00pm, for 6.30 start. We will finish at 9.00pm. Free raffle prizes and light supper, tea and coffee provided.
Our next ‘Gala’ day will be the Hazel Lancaster Trophy on Saturday 23rd April. This is a triples match, so be sure to register early as we can only accommodate 24 players. Any extras will be registered as reserves. Due to covid restrictions our usual sumptuous catering is currently restricted to chips or individual ‘snack packs’ with tea/coffee/fruit juice served ‘covid safe’, so participants may wish to have a substantial meal beforehand. Likewise, numbers will need to be restricted to ensure social distancing requirements are met. I’m sure everyone will accept that these restrictions must apply until Government restrictions are lifted. Our Wednesday ‘Happy Hours’ are covered under the same covid guidelines also. As always, anyone who would like to come and have a go are most welcome. We play Monday, Wednesday and Friday, from 6:00pm at present and 1:00pm once we change over to day bowls season – keep an eye on the club notice board. Bentley Park Bulletin
Pottery Group Margaret Frew’s journey began before she moved to SwanCare as she was looking for something to do instead of sitting in front of the TV. “I find pottery very relaxing,” said Margaret. “I enjoy the achievement of making something at the end of the sitting.” Speaking with Margaret about the group it was clear that there is a lot of passion for all things clay and what you can do with it. “Some members are hobby potters who prefer to glaze already made greenware, and others hand build using moulds,” said Margaret. “Others, like me, enjoy creating wheel thrown objects made from scratch, such as mugs and vases. We have three kilns which suits all factors of pottery.” The group also holds stall a couple of times per year, often with the Handicraft Group to sell off items that other people can enjoy. “When someone buys our pottery, it gives us great joy as they love it enough to buy it and use it or gift it,” said Margaret. The Pottery group is one of SwanCare’s longest running resident groups which has been going for over 25 years. Margaret loves the friendships that she has also made along the way. One such person is Mary (photo right) who organises the glazes and helps with cleaning the studio. “I couldn’t do it without her!” said Margaret. The group are looking to expand membership for creating wheel thrown pots. New members don’t need any previous experience, but the group is always open to experienced potters too. “Some of our members come in with curiosity and find they really enjoy pottery,” said Margaret. “Some people like to read a book or create a painting; we like to pot!” When: Mondays 9am Where: Pottery Group Studio, Richard Cleaver Lodge Contact: Margaret Frew on 0490 728 016
Fish N Chips with Friends Thank you all very much for your co-operation regarding COVID-19 and mask wearing. The Committee would like to advise that Fish n Chips donated $400 towards the Red Cross Flood Appeal. In March Patrick O’Hooligan had us all laughing at his Irish jokes and songs. The entertainer for April is ‘Rockin Ronnie’. As we will be celebrating Easter, ladies wear your pretty hats and gentlemen your Bunny Ears. All residents and especially new residents are most welcome to join us at our monthly luncheons. Raffle tickets are on sale and prizes to be won. Due to social distancing, seating is limited. Bookings must be made.
