The Supreme Court verdict goes SwanCare Group’s way.

It was welcome relief for all concerned to be finally advised that the Supreme Court has moved in favour of SwanCare Group’s application to have the memorial removed off the Carlisle land. This decision now paves the way for the sale of the Carlisle units to progress. This process has been a drawn out one for all concerned, and I would like to extend my sincere thanks for all those who have assisted during this time and have shown patience and continued support to SwanCare Group. Do you have an interesting “life-story” to share …

As part of our continued promotion of SwanCare Group and letting the broader community learn a bit more about the special people that make up our community, you will each be receiving a questionnaire in the next few weeks seeking out any special interest life-stories that you might like to share about yourself. Your contribution is purely voluntary, and we will work closely with you before any information is published.

Our specialist public relations consultants will oversee the production of the stories and you can be assured that the end result will be a very professional publication. The sort of things we are looking for are very broad, we just simply want to cast a net and see what interesting stories we have within our very own community. For example, stories about years gone by, upcoming special birthdays, anniversaries, celebrations, reunions, travel plans etc. Is there a personal story or special achievement that you might like to share? Have you endured any special challenges, overcome certain adversities, devoted time to special events, charities or note-worthy organisations?

The list is really endless, and as mentioned participation is purely voluntary. I also must stress that not all stories will be published, and if your story is chosen for publication you will be informed well in advance.

It’s that time again …. Resident Survey Time Yes, it’s time for our biennial survey of our retirement village residents. Can you believe that it has been nearly two years since the last survey? The survey is a very vital piece of information that we use to assist with our longer term strategic planning and is also an extremely important feedback tool that we use to assess our own performance and see what areas we can improve on. The survey looks at 6 key areas of our operations being administration services, complaints handling,

resident support services, recreation and lifestyle activities, maintenance support services, and building and development activities. In addition, the survey also seeks out your thoughts on what new or improved facilities, services or events you might want to see introduced into the Community.

Please note that participation is purely voluntary, but we have traditionally received a very good response to the resident survey and we do hope that this tradition will continue.

Media Communications Our arrangement with Shine Communications continues to work extremely well and is providing very good media exposure and positive messaging and stories about SwanCare Group.

During March we received excellent coverage in the West Australian Real Estate section with a full page spread promoting our “Live for Free” initiative. Those who saw the article witnessed a fabulous photo of our CFO Garry Black alongside our very own, and very photogenic Fitzy Taylor. This was a fabulous article about a terrific initiative and highlights the wonderful culture of SwanCare Group as an organisation that truly cares about actually giving back to its residents.

Church Services at Kingia

Christian Fellowship of Bentley Park We would love to see you at our Sunday Service of praise and song. We are from all denominations and would love to welcome you into the Christian Fellowship. We meet at the JP Stratton Centre every Sunday 9.30am.

The fourth Sunday of each month is our Prayer & Praise service, led by members of our group. All enquiries and transport phone Mrs Betty Bennett – 9472 6857.

The Kingia Care Facility has the Swan Room furnished and set up as a Chapel. Monthly Church Services are held by the Anglican (4th Tues 1.30pm), Catholic (1st Fri 10.30am) and Uniting Church (3rd Wed, 10.30am), and residents of the village are welcome to attend.

The Christian Fellowship (Get Together) Meet on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month in the Stratton Centre at 10:30am. We meet for coffee, tea & tidbits. We find plenty of things we enjoy sharing & discussing.

CEO’s Report (continued) The Uthando Project is a Perth-based grassroots collective of sewing and knitting enthusiasts who began creating handmade dolls for children affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal region.

The project has been in operation since 2004. This article is again a wonderful story and highlights SwanCare Group as an organisation that promotes and supports its residents, in this case Judy, to enrich their own lives through fruitful volunteering activities.

Some general snippets and information…

Website Launch The new SwanCare Group website underwent a soft scale launch during March, and the feedback to date has been very positive and encouraging, particularly in regards to the video component. A big thank you to all residents that took part in the video shoots. Without your help this wouldn’t be the success that it is.

Harmony Day

During March we welcomed Sharon Lane to the administrative support team and wish her all the very best in her new role with us.

Sharon has settled in very well, and many residents may have already seen Sharon helping out at the front desk. Please make her feel welcome.

Harmony Day celebrates Australia’s diversity by acknowledging the different cultures within our country.

SwanCare Group celebrated this occasion with BBQ lunches at Waminda, Tandara and Kingia Care Facilites. Residents, family and staff wore orange and traditional dress as the Southern Cross Bushband entertained with Australian music.

On a sad note, we will be saying farewell to Mark Flores, our Manager of Kingia and Tandara Care Facilities. Mark will be finishing up early April, and is planning on taking a well-earned break from Aged Care before he sets his sights on the next stage of his life, and working career. Mark has been a wonderful manager at Kingia and Tandara, and has introduced a strong caring culture with a real positive focus on resident care, enrichment and well-being. We wish Mark all the very best in his future endeavours and sincerely thank him for the contribution that he has made to SwanCare Group.

As they say, one door closes and another opens, and this is the case for Jovy Tesani, who has been promoted to be Mark’s successor as the new Manager of Kingia and Tandara. Jovy, has been with us for some time now, and will be able to slot right into the Manager’s role and will continue with driving the continued success that we are experiencing within our care facility operations. We congratulate Jovy and wish her the greatest of success on this wellearned appointment.

Stage 5A We are still progressing through the Development Application process, with all documentation lodged with the Town of Victoria Park by the end of March. Feedback from the Town leading up to the lodgement has been positive and we don’t expect any delays outside of the normal processing timeframe for this application.

Australind Rise Work is still progressing on the design and layout of the pool and the associated support infrastructure for the second stage of the Community Centre. The inquiry activity from prospective new residents is still very good and is being driven by word of mouth from existing residents coupled with the knowledge that the community centre extensions are progressing.

16.06.1934 – 09.02.2014 Farewell to the longest residing resident at Tandara.

On behalf of the Board, Management, staff and residents of SwanCare Group we express our deepest sympathy and condolences to the family of Mrs Elizabeth (Betty) Brown on her recent passing. Betty had resided at Tandara Care Facility for 28 years, having moved in on the 12th March 1986. Betty will fondly be remembered as a lady who loved to play cards, with a deck never far from reach.

Joining Our Community

Village News Lift Works On Monday 14th April the Number 2 lift in the Administration Building will be going through the process of being upgraded. These works will take approximately four weeks and the lift will not be able to be used during this period.

This lift services all five levels of the building and will affect residents who live in the top floor apartments. Arrangements for these residents have already been made. It will also affect those who use the basement car park.

Lift Number 1 lift will still be in use. This lift services the ground, first and second floors only. We apologise for any inconvenience and ask for your patience during this period.

Bentley Park Show We are thrilled to have John Morris join our Show Committee. Already his input has been very helpful and it will be wonderful to have a ‘Man’s point of view’ to balance our discussions. Our March committee meeting was extremely busy and we managed to finalise the main components of the Schedule.

I can tell you that we have included 3 new items in the ‘Pot Plant’ section: 1. A pot of Herbs; 2. A pot of Succulents and /or Cacti; 3. Mini Garden. Some of you will remember the Mini Garden Kath Hudson entered last year and we were so impressed we decided to have a separate category for it this year.

Mobile Alert are offering Seniors Card holders the opportunity to purchase a Mobile-Alert pendant. The WA Government are currently offering a $200 rebate on personal safety devices and you have the opportunity to obtain the pendant at no charge. FOCUS GROUP VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

There is a small group of volunteers who are willing to assist residents with occasional weeding and watering of their gardens.

If you are going away and your neighbours are unable to water your garden, we may be able to assist. You will need to give us at least a week’s notice so that you can show us which plants to be watered and which hose to use.

For anyone who is not sure what that is, it is a bowl, dish, or similar, with soil in it and small plants growing in it. The idea is to make it look like a ‘garden’ with a variety of different small plants and perhaps little pathways, ornaments and anything you can come up with to make it look like a miniature garden. Of course it has to be light enough for you to handle and transport. We are looking forward to seeing what brilliant ideas you have for this one. The Photography section is another one we have 3 new categories for. 1. Portrait; 2. Close up shot – any subject; 3. Action shot. With the keen photographers attending Jim’s classes we are expecting some exciting entries.

Do you have a spare 45 minutes and would like to help us develop low cost nutritionally balanced meals containing seafood that you can prepare at home?

Curtin University’s Centre of Excellence for Science Seafood and Health (CESSH) is looking for volunteers to take part in a focus group discussion about the types of seafood or fish meals that you like to eat.

We are also interested in your experiences with buying, cooking and eating seafood and fish.

Your assistance will help us to develop a series of nutritionally balanced meals suitable for seniors to prepare at home in around 15 minutes, at around $5 per serve.

All focus groups will run in the Leisure Centre on the following dates and times:

Bentley Park Social Club Last weekend, the Village celebration for St Patrick’s Day was a fun day with good music, good food and a relaxed atmosphere (including a few groans for the answers to some Irish jokes I found on the Internet!).

The Committee and volunteers had again set up a beautifully decorated venue, which may be seen in attached photos of the guests.

Please note there has been an alteration in the date of our next event - the Quiz Night (teams of 6, may include adult relatives or friends) – which will now be held on Saturday 12th April, due to the Auditorium being used as a Polling Place for the ‘Surprise Election’. Then the month of May is the beginning of the annual Afternoon Teas, along with other events.

The proposed timetable of events for the year has been posted on the various notice boards around the Village for your information, but sometimes there is a need to alterations due to unforeseen circumstances, such as above.

The Op Shop had a very successful ‘$1.00 per item’ sale’ over the last few weeks and volunteers are now organising the winter clothes as the cooler weather arrives.

The Newspaper Recycling team sent another truck load away last week, but the rules have changed slightly again to accommodate the requirements of the firm. While the ‘glossy inserts’ still need to be placed in your own recycling bin, we are pleased to receive the other inserts (with or without the staples) to boost the size of the paper loads. These non-glossy inserts will now be placed in separate bundles apart from the actual newsprint for recycling.

SwanCare Administration - Meet the Finance Team Garry - Chief Financial Officer I am the Chief Financial Officer responsible for all things associated with money. I have been at SwanCare Group for 3 years and 3 months. What I enjoy most is it is wonderful to be working with such caring people and amongst residents who clearly enjoy their lives at SwanCare.

Before SwanCare I was the CFO at Statewide Building Society, Perpetual Trustees (WA) Ltd and Home Building Society Ltd. Outside of work I enjoy time with my family, property investment and development, walking the dog down the beach, coffee in Fremantle and occasionally eating at some fine eateries. Some of my hobbies are reading, swimming and supporting the Fremantle Dockers.

Jeanette - Management Accountant I am the Management Accountant. I have been at SwanCare Group for 1 year and 4 months.

What I enjoy most is that the staff are always so happy, friendly and professional. I also enjoy the challenges of my role.

Before SwanCare I worked as a stay at home mum in Zambia, Africa where my husband worked for two years. Previously I was the Office Supervisor at Byblos Construction, Paraburdoo and worked in Accounts Payable at the Parkroyal Hotel, Surfers Paradise QLD. Outside of work I am married and have two young sons aged 7 and 10 so I’m always busy looking after them. I am also studying for my CPA Australia qualification.

Some of my hobbies include camping and 4-wheel driving, travelling, movies, reading, photography and studying.

Gail - Accounts Payable Officer I am the Accounts Payable Officer.

I have worked at SwanCare for five years. What I enjoy most are the people I work with and the family atmosphere.

Before SwanCare I worked as an Office Admin Assistant and Carer at Dale Cottages.

Outside of work I enjoy time with family and friends, fishing and camping. My hobbies include reading, photography, painting ceramics and dirt drag racing.

Kim - Finance Officer I am the Finance Officer responsible for fees and invoice billing but have done most jobs in Administration over the years. I have worked at SwanCare Group for 33 years. What I enjoy most is helping our residents, working with a great bunch of people and learning new jobs and systems as time goes on in an organisation that does not put profit first.

Before SwanCare I worked for a wine and spirit wholesaler.

Outside of work I like to go fishing and visit family and friends, walking and playing with our dog Jesse. My hobbies include reading, gardening and watching the cricket, rugby league and science documentaries.

Joy - Administration Co-ordinator I am the Administration Coordinator. My main responsibilities are funding and admissions into care. I have been at SwanCare Group for 33 years. The first 30 years of my time at SwanCare were served at the high care centres where I enjoyed my role as Senior Receptionist mainly at Tandara and then Kingia.

I found working and caring for our very frail aged most rewarding. The last three years have been in Administration where I work as part of the Finance team. This role challenges me as there are some aspects which are not my normal realm and do keep me on my toes.

Outside of work I enjoy time with my husband Michael who recently retired. We have recently completed renovation of our home of 20 years. We also have three beautiful cats which we really enjoy. I love to travel and I’m soon embarking on a second trip to Europe for a lovely river cruise.

I enjoy cooking, gardening (growing our own food), shopping, photography, daily walks, interior and exterior design and mosaic work with different materials, especially stained glass.

Stratton Luncheon/Concert The next Luncheon/Concert will be on Friday 4th April 2014. The entertainer is a fine vocalist Bernard Carney a most accomplished performer.

The Luncheons will be held on the first Friday of each month through until December. Tickets cost $10 – bookings can be made by ringing Shirley on 9355 4767.

These events run from 11.30am to 2.30pm and the ticket price includes the Fish & Chip meal served at the table, wine and soft drinks, tea and coffee and afternoon tea and cakes. The 1 hour concerts are performed by quality entertainers and run from 1pm to 2pm.

Figures reveal a record 43.4% of total new home approvals were for medium density dwellings, up from 39.8% last year.

“There used to be a real anti-apartment sentiment but that’s definitely on the decline,” said SwanCare Group Retirement Living Consultant, Harry Pearson.

“People used to have a fear of shared walls but the insulation properties of today’s apartments are so good, it’s no longer an issue,” he said.

“In fact, the insulation not only reduces the sound, it makes it very easy to keep your apartment cool or warm, which means your power bills will be less.”

While many West Australians still dream about owning a traditional house on a quarter-acre block, Housing Industry Association figures show it’s becoming just that – a dream. The average block size in Perth is now a record low 423sqm compared with 446sqm a year ago and 508sqm in 2008.

“Some of the new houses being built are not much bigger than apartments. But the apartments have more advantages,” Mr Pearson said.

“There’s minimal maintenance and no lawns and gardens to look after. And they’re much more secure.”

“Apart from the benefits, they’re more affordable because the cost of the land is shared,” he said.

Club News Swan Village Bowling Club The half yearly General Meeting was held on the 6th March and the main items were changes to the Constitution. These were to do with the types of Membership. There will be three. A Playing Member, A Social Member and an Associate Member. A Playing Member will have full voting rights. A Social Member cannot play, but will have full access to all Club functions and full voting rights. An Associate Member will be a friend of either a Playing Member or Social Member and must be nominated by them. They cannot play, have voting rights, but will have access to all Club functions. A Playing Member may only nominate one Associate Member. This was carried unanimously.

The rationale of this is that there is now a need for different categories of membership in the club. This is due to the changing and playing responsibilities of our members.

The Murray Ranyard Fours was held on the 15th March and what a grand night it was. A beautiful night, clear sky and everybody in whites. The trophy was won by the team of Joy Ride, Ted Morrow, Tini Kampen and Dee Sanders. A great conclusion to the night was a wonderful supper by our ladies.

The next trophy day is on the 9th April. This will be the Molly Hobbs Triples starting at 1:30pm, be there by 1pm.

Remember bowling times to be 1pm on the 1st April.

LINE DANCING Line Dancing is progressing well and lovely to see so many coming. We’ve learnt more new dances including an Irish one for St Patrick’s Day. We’re having fun which is the main thing.
