stage of the development, referred to as Stage 5A, will encompass the area of land from Jarrah Road, along Adie and finishing in the vicinity of Gordon Way. As mentioned above this site will include the location of the current Op Shop and also a portion of Graham Crescent.

There is still a significant amount of planning and development work to be undertaken, and right now we are at the stage where we are calling for expressions of interest to flesh out an architectural partner to come on board with this project. Once we have the project team in place, considerable work will be required to firm up on concepts, design, arrange for approvals, and most importantly, before any construction can occur, ensure that residents impacted by this first stage

Church Services at Kingia Some Bentley Park residents may not be aware that when the Kingia Care Facility was opened in 2009, the Swan Room was furnished and set up as a Chapel. Monthly Church Services are held by the Anglican (4th Tues 1.30), Catholic (1st Fri 10.30) and Uniting Church (3rd Wed, 10.30), and residents of the village are welcome to attend.

At other times the Swan Room is available to all as a venue for private reflection.

Christian Fellowship of Bentley Park We would love to see you at our Sunday Service of praise and song. We are from all denominations and would love to welcome you into the Christian Fellowship. We meet at the JP Stratton Centre every Sunday 9.30am.

During April we launched our new and innovative SwanCare Rewards and Recognition program – SwanCare Feathers.

This scheme operates across the entire organisation and is a new concept designed to provide an environment for our employees where they will be acknowledged and rewarded for providing service standards that surpass the ordinary.

One of the real significant challenges facing employers within the aged care sector is retaining our valued employees. It is a tough sector to work in, and we want to ensure that we retain our wonderful employees for as long as we can. As the CEO of SwanCare Group I am privileged to work with such a tremendous, focused and caring group of talented and conscientious people.

Introducing a structured scheme such as our SwanCare Feathers Rewards and Recognition program is one way that we can all recognise the wonderful achievements of the staff. The really exciting aspect of this new innovation is that it involves the entire SwanCare Community, which naturally includes our residents.

I am in receipt of comments, almost daily, about how well our staff members have assisted or helped out a resident. The SwanCare Feathers program now provides you with a formal avenue to capture your praise of the good deeds of our employees.

The form below will be available from SwanCare Group Administration Reception and I would encourage our residents to take the opportunity to nominate an employee when they consider that they have received service or support that is above and beyond the norm.

• During the month I received advice that SwanCare Group was successful in its application for an AIM Organisational training scholarship. This scholarship will enable a selected member of the SwanCare Group management team to undergo a specialised leadership training course with the Australian Institute of Management. At the time of writing a decision has not yet been made as to who will be the lucky recipient of this highly sought after scholarship award, but I know that there are quite a few worthy recipients who will be vying for this accolade.

• During April, I along with several of my management team attended a briefing by the Department of Health and Ageing on the proposed changes to the Aged Care Act. The Government, as part of its reform package agenda for the aged care sector has released a raft of changes that will change the way we go about operating and funding our aged care operations.

The majority of the changes relate to residential care and community care, and will not impact our operations until July, 2014. However, in the interim period we are ensuring that SwanCare Group will be positioned so as we can maximise the benefits from the new funding regimes. I will provide more details as to the changes and their impacts over the ensuing months.

• On a sad note I would like to acknowledge the sad passing of John Wellstead. John was a wonderful contributor to the village and to our community and will be greatly missed. John was instrumental in the running of the village computer club. He was also heavily involved in the village archives and most recently he was the brainchild behind the Bentley Park Cookbook, the proceeds of which directly benefited our care facilities. At this most difficult time our sincerest condolences and wishes are extended to Carolyn and her family. RIP John.

And finally for this month ….

ANZAC Day will have come and gone, but the memory resonates forever and with me I am always buoyed by the stirring and emotional Ode of Remembrance, and I would like to conclude this month’s article with these immortal words taken from Laurence Binyon’s poem “For the Fallen” ….

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them.

Theatre Go-ers Club

Bentley Park News Bentley Park Show There will be a few surprises for you this year, beginning with the Schedule. Our committee and residents are coming up with some new ideas for entries as we go through the Schedule at our monthly meetings. I’m sure most of you will be able to find at least ONE category which will get you enthused to put in an entry!

I know the Show won’t be here until 26th & 27th October but we all know that the older we get, the quicker time goes by – I’m sure I’m not the only one who is convinced of that fact - so please start thinking about it NOW. We are hoping for quite a few entries from our staff and Board members this year as well.

With our brand new Community Gardens getting started we are expecting some wonderful entries in the vegetable and flower sections.

Here is a sneak preview for all of the cooks: We have included such items as muffins, meringues and even decorated gingerbread men!

Happy Mothers’ Day to all of us Mums but don’t make yourself too sick of chocolate before we have a chance to sell you some of our Show chocolates in June.

Community Garden Scheme The raised garden beds are now ready to be installed adjacent to the wishing well at McGrath Park.

The six units have been allotted to, Ellen Clare, Maxine Richter, Marion Hayman, Doris Harper, Jim Leavy and Tom Brazier. One person is willing to share their unit. The beds will now be two thirds filled with soil and then topped with a good gardening mix. The area will be reticulated with tap and hose access.

If there is anyone else interested in joining this group please contact Tom Brazier on 6250 0496. Should the number reach five, then the scheme can be extended to another part of the village.

Our community extends a warm welcome to Mr Colin Sanders and Mrs Glenice Sanders.

On Friday 21st June we travel to the All Saints Players, Gosnells to see their annual fundraiser and enjoy a two course roast dinner before the show entitled “SHOW ME THE WAY TO GO HOME” An uproarious night of entertainment and great food celebrating the spirit of Music Hall. Solos and chorus numbers, top dancers, hilarious sketches and the comic melodrama ‘Mrs Stonely’s Solution’. We leave the village at 6.15pm and on arrival have a two course roast meal with tea/coffee followed by the show (BYO).

Tickets are $36 (cash with order) and include bus pick up & return, the roast dinner, a reserved seat, tea/coffee with the meal and at the interval. They will go on sale 8.15am on Monday 20 May inside the Stratton Centre near the village shop. Any ticket returns will be advertised on the notice boards at the village shop and Admin ground floor.

Recycling Bins Since the introduction of recycling bins at Bentley Park there have been many complaints that they are filled to over-flowing before the regular collection day.

On a random inspection of several bins throughout the village over this period it has been found that the common problem lies in the way these bins have been filled. One of the most common practises that have been observed is that cardboard boxes have been placed in the bins without being folded down to reduce the space that they occupy. Also recycled items that have been placed in plastic shopping bags have been put into the recycling bins. Plastic shopping bags are not recyclable therefore if you put items inside a plastic shopping bag and then place the bag into the recycling bin the items would go straight to landfill and not be recycled.

When placing your recycled items into these bins please be mindful of the amount of space that they take up and check the recycling chart that should be in the bin rooms for what items are permitted to be recycled. With everyone’s co-operation in this matter we can reduce the amount of space the recycling material takes up in the bins. This will reduce the extra cost of having to introduce more recycling bins. This may not always be the case, so if you feel after careful consideration that an extra recycling bin is required please let me know through reception at Administration.

Bentley Park - Rowethorpe Neighbourhood delegates now only meet once a month, as from January this year.

Twelve delegates attended the March meeting, but we had no major issues to discuss.

We are still getting break and entry reports, we cannot stress enough, the importance of keeping your doors and windows secured at all times. If you see anyone who looks suspicious or hear any unusual noises please do not hesitate RING SECURITY ON 62500020, remember the next burglary could be at your home.

The next meeting for delegates is Wednesday June 12th.

Special Delivery The staff at SwanCare Group, Bentley Park know all about caring so when a friend of a staff member posted on his Facebook page that he was volunteering in an orphanage in Thailand and that the children desperately needed new underwear, the SwanCare staff assisted. Within a week, 160 pairs of mixed sizes, boys and girls, briefs/knickers were collected and sent to the children of the Father Ray Foundation Orphanage, Pattaya, Thailand.

The following message of thanks has been received by SwanCare Group: “Father Ray Foundation and the children of the Children’s Village would so dearly love to thank the staff at SwanCare Group for such a wonderful and much needed gift of over 160 pairs of underwear for the orphans of Pattaya, Thailand. We have been so desperate for undies and are so gratefully appreciative. Due to seriously bad weather at the moment we can’t take a photo but some pictures will be posted in the not too distant future of the kids receiving such a necessity we know they will be excited to receive.

“It’s because of businesses such as SwanCare Group that we can make a difference to these kids. Father Ray has a policy that no child will ever be turned away”.

Volunteering in Sweden

Last year we travelled to Sweden, housesitting, for 5 months and we became very attached to the community of Borgholm, on the island of Oland. We did a lot of volunteering which was a new concept for the Swedes.

Sweden is a very prosperous country with the government funding all of the community and church projects.

With the downturn of the world economy the government has cut a lot of the funding and the community has asked us to help them initiate volunteering into the community.

As a result, Judy arrived there on Sunday and on Monday was interviewed by the local newspaper, attached. The next 5 weeks are now full of workshops and meetings with all sectors of the community, and she will be passing on all the experience and knowledge that she has gained volunteering here in our

What do you like most about living here?

I have my own unit. It is big enough for me – very satisfied with the layout. I love to cook so my kitchen is a nice size. I feel like I have my own cottage, visitors love the homeliness and I love my courtyard and garden.

What do you enjoy most about retirement?

I had a friend at Rowethorpe who told me to put my name down with Swan Cottages. I had to retire due to macular degeneration but would have liked to keep working. Family supported my decision to move and I knew Richard and Geoff Cleaver.

What did you do before retirement?

Personal Manager for lawyers, in charge of a boarding school for 200 girls, worked for Hemmingway Robertson Group, Executive Secretary with Bell Brothers and also worked for Robert Homesacourt.

What hobbies do you enjoy?

Cooking, gardening. I have written two cooking books and my autobiography.

What is your favourite food?

Tender lamb chops, steak, quiche Lorraine (the French way) and pork with crackling.

What is your philosophy in life?

I believe that you do to others as you would have them do to you – being kindhearted.

What music do you enjoy?

Semi-classical. I also like some modern music.

Which three celebrities would you like to have dinner with?

Victor Sylvester, Robin Williams and Michael Parkinson.

Name something you are proud of.

All that I have achieved in life. I’m proud of the way I have brought up my children. I am the first woman to have a qualification by examination for Institute of Sales and Marketing Executives.

If you couldn’t sprint the distance then you really were in strife.

They were nailed, they were wired, but were mostly falling down.

There was one in every yard of each house, in every town.

There was no such thing as Sorbent, no tissues there at all, Just squares of well-read newspaper, a hangin’ on the wall.

Or, if you had friendly neighbours, as neighbours sometimes are, You could sit right there and chat to them if you left the door ajar.-

They were given many names, some were even funny, But to most of us, we knew them as the outhouse, or the dunny.

I’ve seen some of them all gussied up, with painted doors and all, But it really made no difference, they were just a port of call.

In springtime, if you got the urge and down the track you sped.

Often times the magpies would flydown and peck your head.

Wintertime was always wet, the rain it never stopped, So when you had an urgent call you ran beween the drops.

Now my old man would make a bet, he’d lay an even pound, That you wouldn’t make the dunny with them turkeys hangin’ round.

They had so many uses these buildings out the back, You could even hide from Mother, so you wouldn’t get the strap.

The dunny man called once a week to these buildings out the back, And he would leave an extra can, if you left him out a zack.

So,- for those of you who’ve no idea what I mean by a zack, Then you’re too young to have ever had a dunny out the back.

That’s why we had good cricketers, never mind the bumps.

We used the pathway for the wicket and the dunny door for stumps.

And my old man would sit for hours, the smell would rot your socks.

Bentley Park Social Club I am very pleased to report that the Dance School programme in late March was a very enjoyable event attended by about 100 villagers, who also made a substantial gold coin donation to the group, which, along with a similar donation from the Social Club, assisted their travelling expenses while in America.

The Dance School members enjoyed their time here and volunteered to visit the Village again soon. By all reports, the children have had a great time overseas and the accompanying adults have not grown any extra grey hairs while there.

The recent Quiz Night was a great success, thanks to the quality of the questions and answers provided by the late John Wellstead, and also to the Quiz Masters: Kath Hudson and Mary Manning, plus of course, all the necessary back-up behind the scenes. All attendees seemed to have a really good time – even while giving the wrong answers – and the appreciative feedback has been excellent.

Next: an Autumn Afternoon Tea, to be held on Sunday, 5th May, followed by the Western Australia Day Dinner on Saturday, 1st June. (Difficult to believe that we will then be almost halfway through the year!)

On another aspect, the Social Club has provided funding to Waminda, Kingia and Tandara for recreational/entertainment purposes, including the purchase of a new sound system, microphone and stand amongst other items, while also enabling a wider variety of acts to be engaged.

The Op Shop continues to flourish, and though the weather is somewhat unpredictable, the new season’s clothing is a great drawcard.

There is a slight problem at the moment in Paper Recycling, due to the recycling company having some resourcing issues, so with the shed full to bursting due to the hard work of the volunteers, papers are being stored elsewhere as they arrive, for the time being. It is expected to be sorted out this week, so please keep sending your papers along for packing.

The Snooker Players Association The Snooker Players Association is situated on the second (Social) floor of the Administration Building. Playing sessions are held Monday to Friday from 1–3pm.

New members are welcome and we would especially welcome ‘recently-moved-in’ residents.

Kingia/Tandara Auxiliary I hope you all enjoyed our March meeting when we had the visit from the “Zoo to You”.

As always they were very informative, giving us a real insight into the endangered species and how they are making such wonderful progress with the breeding program’s within the zoo. In some areas they have more success with this work than anywhere else in the world. How fortunate we are here in WA to have such a wonderful zoo right on our door step!

We were told that we could organise groups to see the animals by way of their free train.

This would be nice for those people who are not so good at the trekking around. If anyone would be interested in visiting the Zoo using this driving around way of viewing the animals, please let any of the committee know and we can organise small groups to go for a couple of hours.

We had a nice outing to the “Patsy Durack Rose Gardens” in Kalamunda on 18th April when we were very lucky to have a lovely day to view all the wonderful roses. The perfumes were just lovely and there was a very informative talk by Patsy herself on rose growing in general and tips on how to control pests and the feeding program needed to have lovely healthy roses.

After morning tea we then travelled to Kalamunda shopping centre for free time to shop and lunch if desired.

The return trip was quite eventful as well with a stop to visit the “very life like animal” at bird park/nursery on Orrong road.

Finally to top off a lovely day our bus managed to stop at McDonalds for ice cream!!!

Thanks to our Social Secretary and our bus drivers without whom we wouldn’t go out at all!

The April meeting brought us a visit from Cameo Loretta once again, when they presented their new Autumn/ Winter range.

Thank you to our volunteer models who always do such a wonderful job.

We also thank the speakers from our care facilities who brought us up to date with various issues regarding Kingia/Tandara & Waminda. We now have information on some of the much needed equipment which will be discussed at our future meetings and what we, The Auxiliary, may be able to help out with.

The May meeting will be held on Tuesday the 28th May at 1.30pm when we will have Mr David Hawkes, ex ABC presenting “Surviving on Air for 40 years!”

Come along and enjoy the company, afternoon tea as well as our fun speaker.
