OUR BELOVED CHEEKWOOD Beneficiary of Swan Ball Auction 2021 Cheekwood is considered one of the finest American Country Place Era estates in the nation. Formerly the family home of Mabel and Leslie Cheek, the extraordinary 1930s estate, with its 30,000 square foot Mansion and 55 acres of cultivated gardens and expansive vistas, today serves the public as a botanical garden, arboretum,
and museum with historic rooms and art galleries, and offers a robust calendar of events and programs to engage our community. The expansive property includes 12 distinct gardens, including the Blevins Japanese Garden, Bracken Foundation Children’s Garden, Bradford Robertson Color Garden, as well as the 1.5-mile
Ann & Monroe Carell Jr. Family Sculpture Trail featuring modern and contemporary outdoor sculpture in a woodland setting. Seasonal festivals include Cheekwood in Bloom, Cheekwood Harvest, and Holiday Lights. Art exhibitions change frequently; in 2020, the blockbuster exhibition Chihuly at Cheekwood was presented in the gardens and the galleries as Cheekwood celebrated its 60th anniversary as a public institution. In 2021, the institution is proud to feature In a New Light: American Impressionism 1870 – 1940. Cheekwood offers education and outreach programs to engage K-12 students and community groups, ensuring
that those without the means have the opportunity to experience the grandeur of this spectacular destination. Special events such as Songwriters Under the Stars engage visitors from Nashville and beyond. With an array of wellness programs including yoga, meditation, and mindfulness walks, Cheekwood is beloved as a site for renewal and rejuvenation amid incomparable beauty. EMILY MORGAN BROWN, ARTIST A flower from your garden could be a permanent treasure on your wall. EMILY MORGAN BROWN will create the perfect custom 66” x 42” painting for your home. Featured in Garden & Gun magazine and in exhibitions across the south, Emily Morgan Brown’s work brings a mystical artistry to any home. Her process includes photographing a flower for composition, drying the flower, grinding it into pigment and transforming it into egg tempera to paint on gray Belgian linen. The subject will live forever in the piece through the Old Masters’ painstaking process along with their technique of painting in grisailles to mimic relief sculpture. The paint becomes the flower, allowing the flower to live again in its portrait. Brown’s journey to her signature large scale botanical tapestries meandered from portraiture (she sold her first while in high school ) to graphic design to photographing flowers, when she realized that her most inspiring muses were blooming right outside her studio.
