Bästa läsare,

Läsåret har börjat med full fart, med många härliga evenemang – vissa helt nya, andra gamla favoriter, och alla mycket lyckade! Vädret har blivit kallare, men Casa håller alla Hankeiter och andra Casa-älskare varma. Även om många av höstens höjdpunkter redan har passerat, finns det mycket att se fram emot, då fler evenemang fortfarande väntar. Mitt tips till er alla, särskilt de nya studenterna, är att delta i alla evenemang som intresserar er! Det är inte bara för att de är roliga, utan också för att träffa nya människor. Man vet aldrig när man träffar sin nya bästa vän, framtida kollega, chef eller livspartner! Ta vara på dessa stunder och njut av alla evenemang –studietiden är kort, och vi hoppas att den blir så oförglömlig som möjligt!

I detta nummer av Hankeiten kan du se tillbaka på höstens evenemang, läsa om allt som händer inom löpning och de nya running clubs samt få en uppdatering om hur det går för Karen Spens! För att riktigt komma i höststämning kan du dessutom kolla in Halloween-recept för mat och dryck och prova att laga dem själv.

Precis som Hanken har vi i INK blivit mer internationella, vilket är anledningen till att vi har fler artiklar på engelska än tidigare!

Hälsningar från SHS styrelse

Kära hankeiter, hösten har svept in med sina gyllene färger och friska vindar men framför allt med hejdundrande evenemang och nya studentkårsmedlemmar <3. Jag hoppas att ni alla har haft en bra start på låsäret och hunnit delta på några av alla de fantastiska evenemang våra kommittéer, klubbar och utskott har ordnat hittills i höst Förhoppningsvis har ni även stiftat någon ny bekantskap, då vi i år fått välkomna ett rekordantal nya medlemmar till SHS!

Evenemang och projekt så som Hanken Network Day och Välmåendeveckan har även gått av stapeln, ett Vappenteam har tillsatts för planering av Vappen 2025 och Casa har piffats till med nya bord och utrustning På intressebevakningssidan har mycket tid gått åt till arbete med utveckling av det svenskspråkiga kandidatprogrammet, men även till förberedelser inför stundande förbundsmöten för Finlands Studentkårers Förbund, Finlands Ekonomer och Studerandenas

Vi tar alltid gärna emot feedback, oavsett om det är på era studier, studentkåren eller studielivet generellt och gör vårt bästa för att hjälpa er Ert engagemang och era synpunkter är ovärderliga, eftersom det är för er skull vi arbetar!

Sist men inte minst vill jag även passa på och tipsa om att det är under hösten som många organ inom studentkåren öppnar sin rekrytering inför kommande verksamhetsår. Det lönar sig definitivt att hålla ett öga öppet för när de kommittéer, klubbar eller utskott som intresserar dig öppnar sin rekrytering, det finns något för alla!

Hösthälsningar från SSHV styrelse!

De första veckorna av studiehösten har snabbt rusat förbi. För styrelsens del har det mesta av tiden gått åt till att välkomna och integrera de nya studerandena i föreningens gemenskap och Vasas studieliv. Listan över evenemang, informationskvällar och kaffestunder är lång. Under oktober ordnar vi den efterlängtade exkursionen till Barcelona! En spännande och lärorik resa som organiseras av vår projektansvarige, Fia och hennes projektutskott Det är kul att

I oktober har vi äran att anordna Hankdammen, ett traditionellt evenemang där studenter från SSHV, SHS och MK samlas i samma stad för att festa tillsammans! Vi får även i oktober välkomna kandidatstuderandena från Helsingfors hit upp till Vasa på det gemensamma Vingla i Vasa evenemanget som vi ordnar tillsammans med SHS Gekko, det skall bli kul!.

Här under hösten kommer även här att väljas ny styrelsebildare, som sedan kommer få ll f h

I november kommer vi få besök av studentföreningen vid Handelshögskolan vid Umeå universitet där de får komma och se vårt kära Vasa och uppleva Vasas studieliv.

Höstterminens absoluta höjdpunkt är givetvis SSHVs årsfest som ordnas den 29:e November. Årsfestveckan kommer vara full av kul program såsom traditionsenligt tomtedisco, supé och silliz

Hejsan kära Hankeiter, Hösten har kommit bra igång och det har varit väldigt fint att se er alla igen, både nya och äldre Jag har speciellt gillat att lära känna de nya gulisarna och se dem komma in i kårens kultur. Jag har av dem fått flere frågor, men en fråga har återkommit oftare än de andra: ”Studerar du alls?” Svaret är nu en gång för alla ja!

Detta kan jag dock erkänna att kan vara svårt, många av oss Hankeiter älskar ju förutom att umgås även att tjäna (mycket) pengar. Ett deltidsjobb kan lätt ta upp mycket tid och leda till att man avbryter studierna i förmån för jobbet, inte för att det är fel på det om man är lycklig så, men kom ihåg balansen där med

I andra nyheter har jag även varit med och grundat HRC, en springklubb, som jag varmt vill lyfta fram. En sund kropp ger ett sunt sinne, och ett sunt sinne är, som vi alla vet, vårt viktigaste verktyg som Ekonomer.

På kommande under hösten är mycket bra info och evenemang även från ekonomernas sida, något som jag själv vill lyfta är NUEK eller Nuoret Ekonomit forum som jag ordnar tillsammans med Aaltos (KY) Kylli Nik På evenemanget kommer ni få höra en inspirational speaker och avnjuta en god sushibowl!

Avslutningsvis önskar jag er ett gott sista kvartal för året, gynnsam aktiekurs, glada miner samt många många nya upplevelser och vänner!

Howdy dear Hankeits!

Autumn is well underway, and it has been wonderful to see you all again, both new and returning faces. I’ve especially enjoyed getting to know the new freshers and watching them integrate into the student union’s culture. I’ve received many questions from them, but one question has come up more frequently than the others: “Do you study at all?” and the answer, once and for all, is yes!

I also want to take a bit of my writing space to remind you to balance student life with your studies; it’s important to keep your grades at a satisfactory level. If you let the snowball of unfinished courses start rolling, it can be tough to catch up.

However, I can admit that this can be difficult, as many of us Hankeits love not only socializing but also earning (a lot of) money. A part-time job can easily take up a lot of time and lead to prioritizing work over studies Not that there’s anything wrong with that if you’re happy with it, but remember to balance that as well

In other news, I have also helped to found HRC, a running club, which I warmly want to highlight A healthy body gives a healthy mind, and as we all know, a healthy mind is our most important tool as businesspeople.

Coming up this fall is a lot of good information and events from Ekonomit, one of which I particularly want to highlight is NUEK, or Nuoret Ekonomit Forum, which I am organizing together with Aalto’s (KY) Kylli

Fullmäktiges hälsning

Bästa Hankeit, och varmt välkomna alla nya studerande!

Hösten har kommit igång med fart, fullmäktigevalet står vid dörren och sittande fullmäktige har bara slutrakan kvar! Det har hänt mycket sedan sist och fullmäktige har hunnit ha flera möten och har ännu några kvar innan mandatperioden tar slut. Sen förra Hankeiten har fullmäktige haft ett flertal möten och workshops. På möten har dokument som policy, valordning och disciplinreglementet reviderats!

Vi har även fått uppföljning av studentkårens budget och hur läget med verksamhetsplanen 2024 ser ut. Utöver det har medlemsenkätens resultat diskuterats och en delegation till Finlands Studentkårers Förbunds förbundsmöte valts.

Innan mandatperioden tar slut kommer fullmäktige ännu att träffas några gånger och behandla till exempel läget med strategin och val av studeranderepresentanter till Hankens styrelse. Fullmäktigemöten är alltid öppna för alla studentkårs medlemmar och inför varje möte kommer information på shs.fi.

I denna hälsning har vi bestämt att lyfta fram lite mera om fullmäktigevalet, kom ihåg att rösta!

Njut av hösten så ses vi hoppeligen snart!

Varför ska man rösta?

De beslut som fullmäktige fattar på sina möten berör varje studentkårsmedlem, samt hur studentkåren ser ut i nära framtid men också på längre sikt. I fullmäktigevalet röstar ni studentkårsmedlemmar fram de som har den högsta beslutsfattande makten i studentkåren Därmed är fullmäktigevalet ett av de viktigaste valen under året och där ni faktiskt kan påverka. Det kan kännas överväldigande att tänka på det på det sättet, men (1) varje medlems åsikter tas i beaktande och (2) de beslut som fattas av fullmäktige påverkar inte bara dig som nu studerar vid Hanken, men också de som i framtiden kommer att studera vid Hanken. Fullmäktige väljer dessutom personer till förtroendevalda poster, t.ex. kommittéordförande och styrelsen, vilka jobbar mer synligt via evenemang, strategi osv. Allt detta påverkar varje medlems vardag på SHS Dessutom är det otroligt lätt att rösta: en röstningslänk skickas ut till varje studentkårs medlems et!

Vad går fullmäktige valet ut på?

I fullmäktigevalet röstar ni studentkårsmedlemmar fram de som har den högsta beslutsfattande makten i studentkåren. Därmed är fullmäktigevalet ett av de viktigaste valen under året och där ni faktiskt kan påverka

Fullmäktigevalet är det val då ni som studentkårsmedlemmar kan välja den kandidat som ni tycker kommer föra fram de åsikter och tankar som ni står bakom och senare förhoppningsvis förs vidare inom studentkåren. Därmed är de som sitter i fullmäktige väldigt viktiga, då de besitter stor makt över hur kåren kommer se ut i framtiden! Fullmäktigeledamöterna väljer alltså många förtroendevalda (bl.a. styrelsen), bestämmer kåravgiften och kårens långtida strategi.

Dear Hankeit, and a warm welcome to all new students!

The fall has started well, the student council elections are at the door and the current Student council has only the final moments left! A lot has happened since last time and the Student council has had several meetings and still has some left before the term ends.

Since the last Hankeiten, the Student Council has had several meetings and workshops At the meetings, documents such as policy, election regulations and disciplinary regulations have been revised! We have also received a follow-up on the Student Union's budget and the status of the 2024 operational plan. In addition, the results of the member survey have been discussed and the delegation to the General Assembly of SYL in Finland has been elected

The Student Council also elects people to elected positions, such as committee chairs and the Board, who work more visibly through events, strategy, etc. All of this affects every member's everyday life at SHS. In the Student Council elections, you, the members of the Student Union, vote for those who have the highest decision-making power in the Student Union. This makes the Student Council elections one of the most important elections of the year and one where you can actually make an impact.

The council election is the election where you as student union members can choose the candidate who you think will bring forward the opinions and thoughts that you support and later hopefully be passed on within the student union. Thus, those who sit in the student council are very important, as they have great power over how the union will look in the future! The student council members choose many elected representatives (including the board), decide the union fee and the union's long-term strategy

Welcome new students!

This fall, Hanken welcomed many new bachelor and master’s students. We asked the tutors from Gekko, Freshers Committee and Masters’ Committee to recap how they started the new school year together with the new students.

Masters’ Committee

The fall semester has been a busy but exciting time for the Masters' Committee (MC). Through a number of successful events, we have welcomed both new and old Masters students, while collaborating with other committees and clubs The introduction week was filled with activities such as Park Games, a ride on the KOFF tram, dinner with the tutor groups, and mini golf at Helsinki Camping, where new acquaintances were made and good memories were created In addition to this, MC has also organized an excursion to Suomenlinna in glorious weather, the first sitz of the autumn with packed benches and an incredible atmosphere, a legendary Legenda evening with Källargardet that should not have left anyone thirsty, and the Kallio Crawl together with the Exchange Committee where both national and international students got to know each other better by orienteering together through Kallio MC still has a lot of exciting events coming up before the end of the year, and we look forward to meeting you all at our events whether you are a bachelor, master or exchange student at Hanken. Make the most of the study time you have and the events that are organized, your studies does not last forever ;)

Gulnäbbskommittén

Gekko inledde hösten i augusti då vi äntligen fick träffa alla gulisar! Första dagen träffades vi på terde och den efterföljande veckan hittade vi på massor av roliga aktiviteter nästan varje dag, parkhäng, en utflykt till Sveaborg och Beacholympics tillsammans med Idrottskommittén Under introveckan spelades en och annan flunkkis men trots tappra försök av gulisarna var Gekko de ständiga segrarna. ;)

Under hösten har vi också hunnit med Amazing Rejs i ngfors, Barrundan, en parkrunda med våra vänner från Org, men som på grund av dåligt väder blev Casarundan t, ett jätteroligt evenemang där vi upptäckte Casas alla slen och vrår! I mitten av september bjöds vi också på en ndrade sitz när Casa Nostra traditionsenligt ordnade middagen.

Tillsammans med Freshers Committee har vi också hunnit ha Gulisintagning, tagit båten till sydligare breddgrader i Tallinn och med 30 tappra gulisar tillbringat Gulissemin ute i Destination X.

Det var extra kul att se alla taggade gulisar som kommit med i EAG som ordnade ett lyckat Beerolympics Vi tutorer ser verkligen fram emot EAG sitzen i december! Även om hösten har gått fort har vi fortfarande mycket att se fram emot, i form av Gutissitz, Vingla i Vasa och den mycket efterlängtade Halarutdelningen!

Freshers Committee

An exciting start to the autumn for the Freshers Committee as we for the first time kicked off the fresher fall for the new Bachelor in Business students! During the orientation days, the freshers got to know Casa in daylight, had a terrace chill with their own tutor group and a day trip to Suomenlinna with fun proggis and a picnic afterwards We also introduced the new freshers to our beloved “sport” flunkkis!

Together with the Exchange Committee we have organised Amazing rejs which was very successful and appreciated by both freshers, gulisar and exchange students as well as Parkgames where freshers and exchange students got to challenge themselves in various tasks! In September, Casa Nostra organised the traditional Gulismiddagen, which was very successful. The week after that, we organised the infamous Freshers intake together with Gekko We have also jumped on the ferry and travelled a bit more south to Tallinn and spent a wonderful weekend with 30 brave freshers at the Gulissemi at Destination X.

In addition, EAG has kicked off with a strong and eager group of freshers and organised Beerolympics We tutors are eagerly waiting for the traditional EAG-sitz in December! We are excited for the rest of the fall with a few more events, including the Gutissitz together with Gekko and EC, and of course the fall culminating in Halarutdelningen where those who have managed to get 1000 points will get their overalls ;)

The Student Council Election 2024

It’s time to elect a new student council! Now you may think what is the council, what does it do and most importantly when and how do I vote? Well lucky for you we have decided to break all of that down for you in this text!

As the seasons change, so does our student council. The council is re-elected each autumn This year, the Student Council elections will be held from October 17th to October 18th, with electronic pre-voting starting on October 14th and ending on the 16th This year we’re lucky enough to have 27 amazing candidates, all of whom you can find on the next page! Go and find your favorite

What is the Student Council?

The council is the student union's highest decisionmaking body and includes members from both Vaasa and Helsinki. The council can consist of up to 18 members and 18 deputies. Its most important tasks include deciding on the student union's budget, student union fee, business plan, and making the biggest outlines for the student union. The council appoints the board chairman and determines the board's composition, as well as appoints committee chairs and oversees the board's work. The student council can also, among other things, process motions signed by at least 16 student union members who have registered their presence.

The council meets approximately once a month during the spring and autumn semesters, and their meetings are open to all students.

Remember, voting is the best (and easiest) way to impact the future of the student union.

There is also a PR team responsible for creating election visuals and designing the overall patch Lastly, CVN has an events team responsible for planning election-related activities.

What is the central election commission?

The Central Election Commission’s (CVN’s) task is to conduct and monitor the Student Council election together with the election committee in Vaasa. CVN consists of four to eight members, as well as a president

The committee is divided into different teams. The administrative team includes the president and vice president, who also receive support from the secretary-general

The Central Election Commission oversees the election process, monitors votes, and determines the election results. Besides managing election logistics, CVN can organize debates, events, and other marketing efforts to encourage SHS members to run as candidates and vote. This year, we organized a picnic and attended many events throughout the autumn, including the fresher’s intake.

How and when can I vote?

Remember, voting is the best (and easiest) way to impact the future of the student union.

The Student Council elections will be held from October 17th to October 18th, with electronic pre-voting from October 14th to the 16th During the actual election days, you can vote electronically from October 17th at 12:00 AM until October 18th at 4:00 PM You will receive a voting link to your Hanken email, so keep an eye out for it!

This year, we also have a competition among the fresher groups and committees. For each candidate, three points will be awarded, and for each voter, one point will be awarded The fresher group and committee with the most points will win three bottles of sparkling wine. So, get voting!

If you’re unsure which candidate to vote for, you can fill out SHS’s own election compass! This is an easy way to get to know the candidates a bit better. We will also be sharing candidate presentations on @shsmoments, so keep an eye out for that.

Från ett kompisgängs spelkvällar till

SHS sällskapsspelklubb HANKSTATS

Hej,

vi är Hankstats, och vi ordnar evenemang för Hankeiter som är intresserade av olika strategiska sällskapsspel såsom poker, schack och backgammon. Vi har planer på att utöka vårt evenemangsutbud med bland annat resor. Klubben grundades den andra maj i år, men vi har redan haft två lyckade evenemang. Hittills har vi fått mycket positiv feedback. Vi arbetar hårt för att kontinuerligt förbättra våra evenemang.

Idén till Hankstats föddes under en Tallinnkryssning under vår gulishöst, där vi tillbringade tiden med att spela poker. Snart började vi arrangera pokerkvällar på förfester till Casa evenemang. Dessa förfester växte snabbt i popularitet, det blev tydligt att det fanns ett stort intresse för att spela poker. Då beslöt vi oss för att grunda Hankstats för att ge alla Hankeiter en möjlighet att spela och umgås. Förutom poker gillar vi också schack och backgammon, så dessa spel finns också tillgängliga under våra evenemang.

Vi strävar efter att erbjuda en lugn, trevlig och rolig atmosfär där alla Hankeiter kan känna sig välkomna oavsett tidigare erfarenhet Hos oss kan du både koppla av och spela samtidigt som du har möjligheten att umgås med andra Hankeiter och skapa nya kontakter. Vi vill att våra evenemang ska vara en plats där man kan komma bort från studie-stressen och ha det roligt i gott sällskap.

Nyligen har vi haft rekrytering och fått med en hel del nya och ivriga medlemmar. Tack vare att vårt medlemsantal har ökat kommer vi att kunna ordna större och bättre evenemang i framtiden. Vi hoppas att vi ser dej på våra kommande evenemang.

What’s up with running?

Whether you are trying to get some exercise in, or whether you just impulsively signed up for a half marathon, you have probably noticed two new clubs at Hanken. Hear what their members have to say!

UDA

UDA is a running club and clothing brand founded by me Daniel and my childhood friend Urho (hence the name UDA), along with the help of our friends Linn, Filip, Cessi, and Lena-Marie Our passion for sports and fashion led us to start UDA, a community for anyone that wants to challenge themselves. Our community runs are organized every Monday at 19:30 with the start outside Oodi and are free of charge and open for anyone regardless of school or age.

The idea of UDA came to us last Christmas, inspired by the rise of running clubs in Helsinki and other big cities After developing the concept during the spring when I was on exchange, we held our first run in June - and have been growing ever since!

Did you know that there is a causation of CEO:s with better physical endurance also being more successful and better paid? Well fear not, we have created a community where everyone is welcome to join us for running, no matter if you can challenge Alex Stubbs PR for a triathlon or are just starting out on your running journey! No application or notice of attending required, just join in on the next event and get to running!

We wanted to offer students more chances of attending active, non alcoholic events. Moving increases your ability to concentrate, improves your quality of sleep, and meeting like minded people in sports is always positive! We strive to organize a run as often as possible (most weeks). Welcome along, open doors policy!

Halloween food

As the Halloween season creeps closer, it’s time to try out some recipes for your spooky celebrations! Whether you're hosting a party or just getting into the festive spirit at home, these frightfully delicious recipes will bring a good time to your table.

Mushroom-skull pizza

Pizza dough

White Button Mushrooms

Tomato sauce + Toppings of your choice

Roll out pizza dough and add your sauce 1

Cut mushrooms in half and cut faces in each mushroom so that it resembles a skull

Add your mushrooms + other toppings

Cook pizza for about 10-15 minutes in the oven at 250 degrees 4.

FIlled Bell pepper Pumpkins

Bell peppers

Rice

Minced meat (or other source of protein)

Onion

Vegetables of choice (e.g. tomato)

Tomato sauce

Shredded cheese

Seasoning

Melt white chocolate on the stove

With a tablespoon, put evenly sized drops of melted chocolate, and spread to make ghost shape. 2.

Add chocolate chips as eyes

Let cool in the fridge until hardened 4

Mix cooked rice, meat, onion, vegetables, sauce and seasoning together 1.

Cut jack-o’-lantern faces into bell peppers and remove insides from bell peppers. 2.

Stuff bell peppers and add shredded cheese on top 3

Bake for around 1 hour in the oven at 200 degrees. 4.

Bake chocolate cookies (or use storebought). 1. Melt white chocolate. 2. Make stripes with the white chocolate on the chocolate cookies, using for example a toothpick or a teaspoon.

3 Let chocolate cool down 4. until hardened.

Hur är det med Karen?

Karen Spens är ett legendariskt namn när det kommer till Hankens historia. Karen började studera på Hanken på 80-talet, skrev sin doktorsavhandling 2001, blev en professor på Hanken 2007, och slutligen rektor 2015 fram till 2022. Nuförtiden är Karen rektor på Handelshøyskolen BI i Norge.

Jag tillbringade mitt utbyte på BI på hösten 2023 och hade äran att sitta ner över en kopp kaffe och ett glas bubbligt med Karen under höstterminen. Dessa stunder förblir nog i mina favoritstunder från min tid på Hanken Jag intervjuade Karen nyligen för att höra hur hon har det i Norge just nu.

Hur trivs du på BI?

”Jag trivs mycket bra på BI.”

Hur skiljer sig BI från Hanken?

”En av de stora skillnaderna är att vi är en privat stiftelsebaserad handelshögskola där alla studenter betalar Det som också skiljer oss är att BI är en mycket stor handelshögskola som idag har cirka 14 000 heltidsstudenter och 7000 som studerar på vår executive utbildning. Med våra 21.000 studenter betyder det att vi är en av de tre största handelshögskolorna i Europa Vi fick också för två år sedan rätten att utbilda jurister så vi har nu cirka 300 studenter som studerar på vår juristutbildning. Så har vi också 4 campus, det största i Oslo där vi dagligen räknar med att ha cirka 10 000 studenter inne i huset, och i tillägg har vi campus i Bergen, Trondheim och Stavanger.”

Har du lärt dig norska?

”I dagens läge kan jag konstatera att jag förstår norska mycket bra, inklusive dialekter som kan vara ganska svåra att förstå trots att man har svenska som modersmål. Jag talar också i dagens läge lite norska De konstigaste ord på norska som jag lärt mig är ’edderkopp’, vilket alltså på svenska är spindel. Så ja, jag tror att jag lärt mig en del!”

Är maten bättre i BI eller på Hanken?

Vad saknar du från Hanken, som inte finns i BI?

”Eftersom skolan är så stor och vi har många campus är nog en av de största sakerna jag saknar från Hanken-tiden närheten till studenter och personal Den fina vi-känslan och ordspråket ’en gång en hankeit, alltid en hankeit’ är nog något man på Hanken får vara väldigt stolt över ”

”Här måste jag nog hålla på min nuvarande skola, vi har faktiskt fantastiska kantiner både för studenter och anställda med mycket god mat, det bästa är nog den stora salladsbuffeen.”

Tänkte du komma tillbaka till Finland (och Hanken)?

”Ja, det tänker jag nog att jag ska göra. Finland är och förblir det land som står mitt hjärta nära, med familj och vänner och inte minst sommarstugan finns det många goda orsaker att återvända. Hanken besöker jag nog gärna även i framtiden. Ska faktiskt vara med på doktorspromotionen i år som jag verkligen ser mycket fram emot.”

Under hösten har gulisar bara ett uppdrag: att samla 1000 poäng för att få sina egna vita halaren. Så småningom börjar dock halaren fyllas med märken och den vita färgen bli mörkare. Eftersom vår Kylli lever ett aktivt studieliv återspeglas det också i hans halare. Därför bad vi honom att presentera sin halare.

Hur många halarmärken har du?

Jag har en massiv stack med halarmärken som jag ska sy men endast måttligt på halaren. Måste vara kring hundra vid detta laget fastsydda.

Interview with an International student

Have you ever wondered what brings an international student to face the cold and harsh Finnish winters? For this edition of Hankeiten, we interviewed Evgenia Katalevskaia. Hear more of her story below!

Tell us about yourself

Hey! I am Evgenia, I am 24 years old, and I arrived in Finland in the summer 2023 from Prague, where I did my Bachelor’s degree in Business. I am majoring in International Strategy and Sustainability, and currently in my second year, finalising my courses and writing a thesis on DE&I.

What made you come to Finland?

As I already mentioned, I did my Bachelor's in the Czech Republic, however, I am originally from Russia At 17 years old, I left my home country to try out what it’s like to live somewhere else I spent 5 years in Prague, where I first learned Czech and then entered university there During my time in Prague, I also went on an exchange to Spain for half a year. When I was deciding where to pursue my Master's degree, it made sense for me to explore something new, and Northern Europe was on my list. I also my partner during my exchange, and he is from Finland. After visiting the country several times, I decided to move here because I liked the feeling of calmness and connectedness to the nature that I had here.

Why Hanken specifically?

My dream was to study sustainability, as it was something my Bachelor's programme did not cover at all I was choosing between two universities in Helsinki, both of which have well-regarded programmes in sustainability, and circumstances led me to one of them, at Hanken.

Biggest culture shock so far?

I didn’t face many shocks, as my culture is quite similar to the Finnish one. However, there is one thing that is still a bit hard for me to fully accept: how safe one can feel here. For example, when I first went to mökki (a summer cottage), I was surprised that we did not lock the door from the inside.

It’s not that I grew up in a particularly dangerous place, but it seemed unusual, and I was constantly worried that someone might break in Or then seeing little kids going to school on their own also felt strange This feeling does go away eventually, though, and you start feeling safe here :)

How has it been to partake in Finnish student life? Any surprises?

I knew quite a lot about Finnish student life before I arrived, so I was looking forward to experiencing it for myself. I had never seen anything like what people have here. Student culture is a huge part of life in Finland, and it truly makes you feel like these are some of the best years of your life

Have you had a chance to explore more of Finland? If so, do you have any favorite place?

During this year, a lot of friends visited me in Helsinki, so I have quite a big list of things to do here. Here is the shortened version of it: nature places (e.g. Mustikkamaa, Lammassaari, Nuuksio and Uutela), traditional food places (e.g. Food Halls at Kauppatori and Hakaniemi and café Regatta), saunas (e.g. Sompasauna, Kuusijärvi, Löyly) and art places (e.g. Forsblom and Atenium). I’ve also had the chance to visit other areas in Finland, and my favourites have been Lapland during Christmas and Porvoo in autumn.

Any advice for international students coming to Hanken?

Since my previous student life experiences were never as active as they are here, I wanted to get involved in some committees. I first applied to the Master's Committee (some of my best memories at Hanken are thanks to these people!), and I am also now a member of the Women’s Career Network. Being around people is always helpful, especially when you're new to a country and want to meet others. There are plenty of different committees, not just at Hanken, so anyone can find something suitable.

I would also recommend learning Finnish from the very beginning. This, of course, depends on your future goals - if you don’t plan to stay here after your studies, it might not make much sense But if you do, I suggest starting right away It’s an amazing feeling when you begin to understand what people are talking about I also want to leave a small appreciation note for my first Finnish teacher at Hanken, Johanna Haapala Thanks to her, Finnish never felt impossible to learn, and I was already exchanging small phrases in Finnish in cafés and shops just one month after arriving

What is something you cannot find in Finland but really miss?

I guess it’s the same for many international peoplemissing family and those close to me Unfortunately, I don’t get to see my family very often, and sometimes that really hits me

How was it to adapt to Hanken? Do you feel like there was support for international students and it was easy to feel included?

For me, the adaptation process was easy, and I felt welcomed and supported from the very first days here. Of course, it’s important to be proactive and start conversations with people yourself. In my opinion, Hanken provides many opportunities to meet others and have fun during various events, including those specifically for international students I felt and still feel included, and I’ve heard only positive words about it from my international friends as well The language barrier may arise at some point, and this can be a situation where an international student might feel excluded

However, I think that’s understandable since we’re moving to a different country with its own language and culture Our task is to do our best to adapt to it and, as I mentioned, learning the language is very helpful
