Ilona

Hello dear Freshers! To start off we want to congratulate you on your acceptance to Hanken. Hopefully you’ve had an amazing summer and are as excited to kick off this upcoming fall as we are. Starting university can feel exciting, confusing and even overwhelming at times—but that’s all part of it. You’re about to meet new people, make new friends and experience things you probably wouldn’t have expected. So take time to enjoy it, say yes to new things and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. There’s a lot waiting for you this semester and we hope you’ll make some unforgettable memories along the way.

My name is Ilona Aaltonen, and together with my right-hand, Nella Söderholm, we’re very excited to welcome you to Freshershankeit 2026! We’ve put together this magazine to give you an overview of everything you need to know as you start your journey at Hanken and become part of the SHS community. Inside, you’ll find introductions to the people and groups that make up student life, as well as useful information to help you get familiar with how things work. You’ll get to meet your tutors, learn more about the different clubs, committees and sub-committees, and discover the many ways to get involved in student life. The magazine also gives you a glimpse into the traditions, activities and opportunities that make the Hanken experience what it is.

Hopefully, you’ll find this magazine useful throughout your first semester and maybe even come back to it later. And remember, your tutors are always here if you have any questions or need a little help along the way. Don’t hesitate to reach out — no question is too small! We’re looking forward to meeting you all and seeing what the year has in store. Enjoy Freshershankeit and, most importantly, enjoy your time at Hanken, Welcome! Ilona Aaltonen

Chief Editor of Freshershankeit 2026

President’s greeting

Congratulations on your acceptance, and a warm welcome to Hanken and Svenska handelshögskolans studentkår - SHS! A new chapter in your life is about to begin. Maybe you’re feeling excited, maybe a little nervous, or maybe you’re not quite sure what to expect. Just a few years ago, I was sitting right where you are now - a curious fresher with lots of questions and even more expectations. Back then, I had no idea how much the coming years would mean to me. Now it’s your turn to experience the time that so many before you have described as the best of your life. You’ve been admitted to one of the world’s leading business schools. Hanken is tripleaccredited and ranks among the exclusive 1% of the world’s business schools that hold all three international quality accreditations. While Hanken ensures you receive a worldclass education, SHS is here to make your time as a student as great as possible. The Student Union is run by students, for students. Our mission is to advocate for your interests, influence your learning environment, and create a vibrant community where everyone can find their place and have the best possible university experience. We represent you in dealings with the university, work at the national level on issues affecting students and ensure that students’ voices are heard. At the same time, we want to add value to your time as a student through community, traditions and opportunities for both professional and personal growth. Whether you want to get involved in student politics, organize events, play sports, travel or try something completely new and get to know people you might otherwise never have met—it’s often the spontaneous decisions that lead to the best memories. The people you meet, the traditions you become a part of, late nights at Casa, and all the experiences that shape you —both as a person and as a future

economist. If you want to get even more out of your time as a student, I highly recommend getting involved with the student union. As early as this fall, you can get involved with, for example, the Halar Team, Extra Active Freshmen, or run for a seat on our student council! And if you feel something is missing? Then you can always help create it yourself. SSH is shaped by its members, and that’s exactly why our activities continue to evolve year after year. My best advice is therefore simple: make the most of this time. Dare to try things you’ve never done before, participate in events, talk to people you don’t know, and give yourself the chance to find your place. But SHS is much more than just advocating for students’ interests. We want to add value to your time as a student through community, traditions, and opportunities for personal growth. As a member, you’ll have the chance to influence the student union’s activities, get involved in various projects and committees, meet students from both campuses, and become part of a network that will stay with you long after graduation. The student union is also run by students, for students, which means that its activities are shaped by the members’ ideas and commitment. SHS has a long history with many wonderful traditions that Hanken students throughout the ages have established and upheld. Our student union was founded in 1909, then under the name Kamratföreningen Niord, and this year the Swedish School of Economics and Business Administration’s student union celebrated its 117th year of operation. Our student union is also unique in Finland because we are not only one of the two Swedishspeaking student unions in the country, but also the only student union consisting exclusively of business students.

During the golden autumn, you’ll quickly notice that there’s always something going on. At SHS, you’ll find everything from sitz parties, annual celebrations, and trips to sports events, lunch lectures, and corporate networking opportunities. Much of student life revolves around our beloved Casa Academica—the home of all Hankeits— where you’ll experience both timehonored traditions and those spontaneous evenings that often become the most memorable. But above all, I hope you’ll find people who make Hanken feel like home. When you’re a member of the student union, you’re called a Hankeit, and even after graduation, you continue to be part of the community as a student union alumnus. As we like to say—once a Hankeit, always a Hankeit. Remember that SHS is your student union. If you have any questions, concerns, or ideas, we’re here for you. We on the SHS board are, of course, here for you throughout your time as a student, and you’re always welcome to reach out to us. I’m really looking forward to meeting you this fall and hope you’ll enjoy your time at Hanken and as part of SHS. Make the most of this time, enjoy every moment, and dare to say “yes” a little more often than you’d planned. Your time as a student goes by faster than you think, but the memories and the people will stay with you for the rest of your life. Once again—congratulations on your admission and a warm welcome to the good life. Make the most of your time as a student, dare to try new things, and create memories that will stay with you long after graduation. See you this fall! Hugs, Ellen Lönnqvist Board and Student Union President at SHS

Rector’s greeting Dear new Hanken students, A warm welcome to Hanken! Forty-seven years ago, I was in the same situation as you are now. I had completed my upper secondary education at Lillestrøm videregående skole in Norway, applied to Hanken, sat the entrance examination (in those days, all applicants had to take one), and finally read the notice posted on Hanken’s front door that I had been admitted. Then came a few intensive years of study during which I became actively involved in the Student Union, worked abroad twice, and still managed to progress well in my studies. For me, Hanken was the right choice – and I hope it will be the right choice for you, too. All of us who work at Hanken are here to support you. Do not hesitate to contact our Study Services if you have questions, especially now at the beginning when everything is new. We have zero tolerance for all forms of discrimination and harassment, and all our activities follow the values of equality, openness and integrity. Our tutors are here to guide you throughout your first semester, and we hope you won’t hesitate to ask for help or book an appointment with a study counsellor, our study coach or study psychologist. We want to offer our students a vibrant study environment on our campuses in Helsinki and Vaasa, which is why a large part of our education takes place on site. I encourage you to engage actively in your studies and make the most of the opportunities our campuses provide for both learning and social interaction. The Student Union at Hanken (SHS) and the Student Association in Vaasa (SSHV) organise a wide range of events in both locations, and I warmly recommend that you take part in them. Hanken is the only university in Finland where an international exchange period is a mandatory part of the bachelor's degree programme. I encourage you to deepen your knowledge of a foreign language and make use of your time abroad to further develop your language skills. The international experiences and global networks you build during your stay abroad will be valuable assets throughout your future career. Hanken has a highly international study environment also here in Finland. Nearly half of our researchers and teachers have an international background, and we have more than 500 international degree and exchange students whom you will have a chance to get to know. Hanken also gives you access to other opportunities. Our Career Services act as a link between you and the corporate world. They offer a wide range of services and events designed to strengthen your professional skills and support you in your search for internships and employment opportunities. In addition, we have the Business Lab, which serves as a dynamic platform for students interested in entrepreneurship. Once again, a very warm welcome, and thank you for choosing Hanken! Ingmar (Inkku) Björkman Rector

The Student unions curator Dear newly admitted Hankeiters, Congratulations! You are now students at one of Europe’s top business schools. Make the most of all the knowledge and expertise offered to you for your future career, regardless of which direction you choose. With very high probability, you will not work with just one thing throughout your life. Jobs we cannot even imagine today will appear in the future. The most important skills, therefore, are the ability to learn, adjust your course when needed, and remain dynamic and innovative. You also have the great privilege of being members of SHS, the world’s best student union. Getting involved in the student union is the best decision you can make at this stage. There you will build networks and friendships that will bring value and joy for the rest of your life. I have never met a student union active who later regretted that decision, but I have met many who realized afterwards that they should have gotten involved. “I wish you all a successful academic year and lots of fun and parties!” Denis “Vepsu” Strandell SHS Curator

Study counsellors

Welcome to Hanken and to your studies! The study counsellors are here to support you throughout your studies and to help you plan your degree in a structured and considered way. We offer guidance on which courses to include in your degree and in what order to take them, so that your studies progress smoothly. Please note that we do not provide detailed information about the content of individual courses. For such questions, we recommend that you first review the course information in Moodle or Sisu and, if needed, contact the course coordinator. You will meet us during the orientation days. From 1 September 2026 onwards, we will be available during our regular drop-in hours, and from the same date it will also be possible to book an appointment for study guidance in Teams. We look forward to meeting you and wish you a rewarding study experience at Hanken! Kind regards, Study counsellors Camilla, Emma, Jennie, Eva and Anna

Secretary General Dear fresher, Welcome to one of the most memorable times in life – your student years! During the coming years, you will not only deepen your studies and build a strong foundation of economic knowledge, but also experience everything that makes student life so special. At SHS, we work to ensure that you get the most out of your time as a student. In addition to the Board, SHS has two employees – a Secretary General and an Economic Secretary – who ensure that the student union’s operations run smoothly. Our responsibilities include overseeing the student union’s finances and administration, ensuring that decision-making is carried out in accordance with applicable regulations, and supporting both the Board and the Representative Council in their work. While the Board is actively involved in the daily operations of SHS, the Representative Council meets approximately once a month to discuss and decide on current matters within the student union. The Representative Council functions as the student union’s “parliament” and consists of students from both Helsinki and Vaasa. This autumn, the Representative Council elections will take place, meaning that you have the opportunity to influence the future direction of SHS. The Representative Council elects, among others, the SHS Board, committee chairs, and individuals for other important positions of trust. It also monitors the student union’s finances and decides on the broader guidelines for SHS’s activities and advocacy work. Serving on the Representative Council is an easy way to gain insight into how the student union operates, influence matters that affect students, and gain valuable experience for your future career. To allow you to focus on your studies and enjoy student life, SHS also works to represent and safeguard your interests. We cooperate closely with other student unions and economics students across Finland to strengthen students’ position, develop student benefits, and create opportunities for future economists.

Our most important partners in national advocacy work are the National Union of University Students in Finland (SYL) and Suomen Ekonomit. If you have questions about your student benefits or the activities of the student union, you are always warmly welcome to contact us or visit the student union office during our office hours. We are happy to help – whether it is a small question or a bigger matter. We hope to see you at the student union this autumn! Elsa Lindeberg Acting Secretary General gensek@shs.fi

Financial secretary Beyond my work as Ekonsek, I study finance. You can often spot me at the student union even outside of working hours (for example with SHS Careers). Previously, I’ve been involved in the Executive Board, as well as serving as a tutor and Papi in Gekko. In other words, there’s a strong chance you’ll see me either at Casa or around Hanken, so feel free to come tap me on the shoulder if you have any questions about student life! Last but not least, I want to encourage you to make the most of your student life and properly explore everything SHS has to offer. There is definitely something that fits you, and if not, you always have the opportunity to create it yourself! If the tutors don’t have the answer to something, you can find my email below. Once again, a huge congratulations, a warm welcome, and I hope to see you in the autumn! Greetings from the office, congratulations on your study place, and welcome to Hanken and SHS! My name is Jesper Rajakangas, and I serve as the Financial Secretary at SHS (commonly known as "Ekonsek"). Together with the Secretary General (gensek) and the SHS President, we ensure that the daily administrative work behind the scenes runs smoothly. For my part, this involves things like sending invoices to partner companies, bookkeeping, and assisting committees with budgeting. As a fresher, you might not need much from me unless you run into issues with the student union fee (which, by the way, should be paid during the semester registration—something you should do ASAP). If (when) you become active in the student union later on, we’ll be working more closely on the financial side.

The Student Council Hello Fresher! Hope you had a nice summer break and enjoyed the summer. Congratulations on your study place, and a warm welcome to Hanken and the student union SHS - The Student Union of Hanken School of Economics! SHS is Finland’s most fun student union, and besides organizing great activities and events for our roughly 2,900 members, we work to promote our students’ interests internally towards Hanken, regionally in the Helsinki area, and nationally in matters of student policy. The highest decision-making body of the student union is called the Council. It usually meets once a month, and all of you, as union members, are welcome to attend and listen. At these meetings, we decide on things such as the membership fee, the union’s budget, and elect the student union board and other representatives. We also organize a wide variety of fun activities together, including after-works, visits to different decision-making bodies such as Parliament, and even possible trips. In addition to the council's own events, members also get to represent the council in various events organized by the union (both in Vasa and Helsinki), such as the Gulisintagningen (see you there!) and the annual ball. We hope you have a great start to your studies, and we’ll see you soon. P.S. Don’t forget to check out the Council elections held in the autumn — make sure to vote, and why not even run as a candidate!

Greetings from the council's presidium, Erik, Mithra and Mats

Finlands Ekonomer Hello, and congratulations on becoming a Hankeit! My name is Antar Mountassir, and I am a fourth-year Finance student here at Hanken. I currently serve as SHS’s Kylli, meaning I am the student contact person for Suomen Ekonomit (The Business School Graduates in Finland) at SHS. My role is to help you make the most of both student life and all the opportunities that membership has to offer. As a new Hankeit, you automatically become a member of SHS and, through that, a student member of Suomen Ekonomit. This is your ticket into a network that will stay with you long after graduation. In addition to the advocacy work that Suomen Ekonomit does on behalf of its members—such as negotiating better terms and salaries—you, as a student, gain access to more than 1000€ worth of membership benefits, as well as a wide range of events and training opportunities that you definitely do not want to miss. Your years as a student will be some of the most enjoyable of your life, but they will pass more quickly than you think. My best advice is to be active from day one: attend events, talk to everyone you make eye contact with, and try things you never thought would be for you. That is where most connections and opportunities arise, and you rarely regret showing up. At the same time, it is easy to lose sight of your studies. So remember to keep a healthy balance: build your network, but also focus on becoming really good at what you are studying. It is that combination that will make you one of the top talents of the future. I hope you have had the chance to recharge your batteries this summer, because now the real journey begins. You will find me around campus, and I am always easy to reach if you have questions, concerns, or simply want to have a chat. See you during the introduction days! For more information, questions, or a bit of inspiration, follow @shskylli on Instagram.

Study Tips & Tricks Starting at Hanken is an exciting and fun time filled with new experiences, but it can also feel both challenging and overwhelming. That’s why we’ve put together some practical tips to help you get off to a good start in your studies and create a balanced daily routine that works for you. Find your own study technique: Everyone learns differently, and that’s totally okay! Some attend every lecture, while others prefer to study independently. The important thing is that you get to know yourself and dare to try different methods. Ask yourself: Do I get the most out of taking notes during lectures? Do I prefer to read at my own pace at home? Or do I need to explain things to others to understand them better myself? It’s also worth participating in class, not just to learn the course material, but also to network, find inspiration, and feel like you’re part of the community. Nowadays, there’s also a wide range of tools that can help you with your studies, but you have to try them out yourself and decide whether you learn best with, say, pen and paper, or by discussing a topic using some kind of AI tool! Plan your time prioritize: Good planning is the key to avoiding stress. Make a list of your courses and think about which ones require the most time and energy. Create a weekly schedule that includes time for studying, breaks, and leisure. Set small, concrete goals; this will give you motivation and structure. Also, try not to get bogged down for too long on things that aren’t essential; learn to distinguish between what you need to know and what’s just nice to know. Vary your study environment: A change of scenery works wonders for concentration. Try studying in different places, such as the library, at home, a quiet café, or an empty room at school. Ask older students for tips on the best spots on campus and around town! When you change locations, you stimulate your brain in new ways, which makes it easier to remember what you’ve learned

Don’t forget to take breaks: Studying effectively isn’t about sitting still for hours on end. Your brain needs time to recover in order to absorb new information. Take regular short breaks —ideally every 45 minutes—go for a walk, stretch, drink some water, or call a friend; it makes a big difference. Seek help early on—it’s a strength, not a weakness No one expects you to know everything right away. If something feels difficult, ask for help. Talk to teachers, academic advisors, upperclassmen, or classmates. Hanken also offers various support services—don’t hesitate to use them. The sooner you ask for help, the easier it is to get back on track. Get involved in student life: Focusing solely on your studies can become onesided. Hanken offers a rich student life with associations, committees, clubs, and events. Join something that interests you; it’s a great way to make friends, network, and create a memorable student experience. And best of all, getting involved outside of your studies often gives you valuable experiences and contacts that will benefit you in your professional life. Take care of yourself Don’t forget to take care of your physical and mental health. Exercise regularly, eat healthily, and get enough sleep. This will help you perform better in your studies. This can be difficult to maintain alongside an active student life, so set boundaries for yourself. Good luck with your studies! Remember that your time at Hanken is an opportunity to learn and grow both academically and personally.

SOPO Tips: Study Benefits Hello, and congratulations on your study place! For many people, student life is one of the best times of their lives—full of opportunities, learning, and new experiences. That’s why I think we should make the most of everything it has to offer. Did you know that as a Hanken student, you’re entitled to a wide range of student benefits? Below you’ll find an overview of the most important ones. Keep in mind, however, that you must be registered as attending and have paid your Student Union membership fee to access these benefits. Student Card To access student discounts, you’ll need a valid student card, which you can order through Frank.fi or the Frank app. You can choose a digital card in the Frank app, a physical card, or both! Once you have registered as attending at Hanken and paid your SHS membership fee, you can activate your card. The academic year sticker for the physical card can be collected from the Student Union. Student Housing Hanken offers student housing in Arabia and Jätkäsaari. You can also apply for apartments through HOAS, which has student housing across the Helsinki metropolitan area. Since accommodation is often in high demand, it’s recommended that you join the housing queue as early as possible. Travel As a student, you receive approximately a 40% discount on HSL season tickets (single tickets are not included). You can load your ticket directly into the HSL app, and it is valid on buses, the metro, trams, trains, and ferries. For longer journeys, you can also take advantage of student discounts offered by VR, Onnibus, and Matkahuolto. Food and Health Student restaurants in Finland offer affordable lunches, typically costing between €1.50 and €6. Hanken has its own lunch restaurant with several lunch options every day, as well as breakfast! Other student restaurants in Helsinki, such as Unicafe, also offer affordable meals. Student discounts are also available at many health and beauty providers, such as massage therapists and hair salons. Remember to always ask if a student discount is available! Through the Finnish Student Health Service (FSHS/YTHS), you have access to services including general practitioners, dentists, psychologists, and public health nurses. Remember to pay the student healthcare fee on time to avoid reminders and additional charges. You can do this through Kela’s website. The easiest and fastest way to make your first contact with FSHS is through the YTHS Digi app, where you’ll be guided to the appropriate service if needed. So don’t forget to download the app!

Exercise and Well-being Unisport offers gyms, group exercise classes (everything from yoga to kickboxing), massage, and personal training services —all at very affordable student prices. Check out their selection and find the type of exercise that suits you best! Hanken also provides several support services. You can meet with a study coach, study psychologist, psychotherapist, student chaplain, or deacon, depending on the kind of support you need—whether it’s related to your studies, stress, or something more personal. Don’t hesitate to reach out—they’re here for you! In addition, SHS, together with its committees, clubs, and sections, organizes various well-being and sports-related events and campaigns for members to participate in. Keep an eye on Orbi and Instagram so you don’t miss out! Support from SHS SHS offers free and confidential support through our Equality and Harassment Contact Persons, Otso Hesselgren (otso.hesselgren@shs.fi) and Lilian Langenskiöld (lilian.langenskiold@shs.fi). You can also reach them via: jamlikhet@shs.fi (Equality) trakasserier@shs.fi (Harassment) A Few Extra Perks Clothing stores, grocery stores, insurance companies, energy providers, and many other businesses offer student discounts through the Frank app or by showing your student card before paying. The discounts vary, so keep an eye out! You’ll also find offers specifically for Hanken students on shs.fi and Orbi. Tip: Make use of your student discounts—you can save quite a bit of money and get even more out of your student experience! Best of luck with your studies, and most importantly—ENJOY student life! <3 Warm regards, Lilian Langenskiöld Social Affairs SHS Executive Board 2026

Engage EU

Freshers Hankeit 26 -17

Hello! We are Peik and Elias, and we represent you as students within the university alliance ENGAGE.EU. At the same time, we serve as SHS’s contact persons for everything related to ENGAGE.EU. ENGAGE.EU is a European university alliance that Hanken has been a member of since 2023. The alliance is therefore still relatively new to us at Hanken and continues to develop constantly. The alliance, which specialises in business and economics, consists of nine member universities, ranging from sunny Spain to mountainous Norway. Together, these nine universities form a European university community of more than 125,000 students, and by studying at Hanken, you automatically become a member of this community. As a member of ENGAGE.EU, you have access to many different opportunities. Among other things, you can participate in Summer and Winter Schools at partner universities across Europe, where you can earn ECTS credits while studying together with students from other countries. So, if the idea of combining your studies with a few weeks at a European partner university sounds appealing, keep an eye out for upcoming application periods. ENGAGE.EU also organises student conferences, where students from the nine member universities come together to discuss current topics, network and get to know other students from across Europe. It is a concrete way to become part of the European community that ENGAGE.EU offers beyond regular classroom teaching. In addition, joint courses are offered through the alliance. Previous courses have included Data Science in Action – Use of Data Science Methods in Different Disciplines (6 ECTS) and Virtual Collaborations Across Cultures (5 ECTS), and new courses and opportunities are continuously being developed. A six-month programme focusing on digital transformation is also currently under development, and at the master’s level, a joint programme in Global Sustainability Management (GSM) is being planned. This autumn, you will begin your studies at Hanken, and in today’s constantly changing job market, it is important to be able to stand out through your education. ENGAGE.EU helps you do this by broadening the range of courses available to you and, above all, by giving you the opportunity to be part of a European community. Elias and I hope that you have had a sunny and relaxing summer and that you are ready to begin your studies this autumn. We wish you the best of luck with your studies and hope to see you this autumn!

SSHV Hello! My name is Anna Villför, and I am the Chair of the Student Association at Hanken School of Economics in Vaasa (Studentföreningen vid Svenska Handelshögskolan i Vasa r.f.), commonly referred to as the Chair of SSHV. All Hanken students in Vaasa automatically become members of both SHS and SSHV. The association’s purpose is to ensure that all students in Vaasa have access to services similar to those available to student union members in Helsinki, represent members’ interests, and organize events. Student life in Vaasa and at Hanken in Vaasa differs somewhat from that in Helsinki, but there are also many similarities. One example of how the association’s activities differ from student union activities in Helsinki is the responsibilities of the board. While PK, CN, and several other committees organize the majority of parties and events in Helsinki, this responsibility lies with SSHV’s board in Vaasa. Together, the board plans and organizes most of the events that take place. SSHV also owns its very own bar, Cella Nova. The licensed bar Cella Nova — or simply Cella, as we often call it is located right in the city center next to Vaasa Market Square and was purchased in 2007. At Cella, you can enjoy everything from beer, seltzer, and shots to soft drinks or why not a cocktail? The board’s property manager, Jacob, takes care of Cella Nova and ensures that the bar stays clean, handles bookings, and does his best to fix anything that breaks. At Cella Nova, we host a wide range of events everything from sitz parties and movie nights to corporate events. About once a month, the doors open on Saturday evenings for Cella Öppet. Then the general public is welcome, and anyone can come and enjoy the very own bar of Vaasa’s Hanken students. As fall approaches, I would like to warmly welcome all of you freshers to Vaasa for Vingla in Vaasa! This is a traditional event where freshers and tutors from both Vaasa and Helsinki come together for a shared experience. Come and see “what all the fuss is about” with your own eyes and experience something truly unforgettable — Vaasa, Finland’s best student city! Remember to take care of yourselves and make the most of your fresher fall. See you this fall!

First year studies in a nutshell During the first 1.5 years of your bachelor's degree, you will be studying together with your cohort at the Bachelor in Business programme. You will complete a set of general basic courses, subject-specific mandatory basic courses, as well as language studies. After the first year, you will select your major and minor subjects, and after completing the first 1.5 years with your own cohort, you will complete your major and minor studies alongside other BSc students. The student workload is measured in credits. One credit at Hanken corresponds to one ECTS, which in turn corresponds to 27 hours of work. Full-time study equals approximately 30 credits per semester, or 60 credits per academic year.

Alberico Sampietro

Welcome, fresher! And a huge congratulations on earning your spot at Hanken! You are at the start of an amazing journey packed with memorable experiences, fantastic people, and tons of fun. Between Hanken and our student union, SHS, there is an endless lineup of activities, parties, and opportunities to connect with others. So dive in and make the absolute most of it! My name is Alberico Sampietro. I’m 19 years old and am soon starting my second year at Hanken, majoring in Accounting! Last fall I was given the amazing honor of being chosen as the Gurufresher, an award given to someone who is positive, friendly, outgoing, and super active throughout all the Fresher Fall events. It is a tradition for the previous year's Gurufresher to write a welcome message for the incoming class, so here is my official greeting and guide for you! Starting at Hanken without knowing a single person can feel a bit intimidating, and I know because I've been exactly there. My absolute biggest piece of advice? Dive headfirst into all the events during the fall! Staying open-minded and simply chatting with people is how I met some of my closest friends. A fantastic way to find like-minded people is to get involved in our amazing Student Union. SHS has something for literally everyone, whether you're into business, wine tasting, skiing, or golf. Personally, I joined the Extra Active Gulisar (EAG) where we organized the iconic EAG Sitz and Beer Olympics, and it was a blast. Now, as the President of the Freshers Committee, I can’t wait to make this Fresher Fall unforgettable for all of you! You will inevitably hit moments where the schoolwork feels overwhelming, but don't worry, that’s exactly why balancing school with social events is so important! It gives you a much-needed mental break and often helps you find your future study group :) If you can, make it a habit to hang out on campus after lectures, grab lunch together, and collaborate. Some of my absolute favorite memories from last fall weren't just the parties, but the long days on campus filled with snacks, laughing with friends from morning until evening. Studying is never that bad when you are doing it with your good friends! As you are about to start this exciting new chapter at Hanken, my biggest advice is simply to stay openminded and be yourself. Your Fresher Fall, or gulishöst, will be over before you know it, so embrace every moment and enjoy! Looking forward to meeting you all, Alberico Sampietro Gurufresher 2025

Lenni Mattila

Hello to all new Freshers! Congratulations on securing your spot at Hanken and becoming part of a wonderful community! SHS might not be familiar to you just yet, but it is going to become a very importantpart of your life. SHS truly is “the good life”! My name is Lenni Mattila, I am 22 years old, and I had the honor of being elected Gurugulis 2025. The Gurugulis title goes to a Gulis/fresher who actively participates in events, is extra social, builds community, and parties hard! I am about to start my second year of studies, majoring in financial economics with a minor in accounting. Here are a few tips on how to make your fresher year the best year of your life. I barely knew anyone at Hanken when I started last year, but that changed within a few days. You are going to spend a lot of time with the other freshers, and especially with your fresher group (Gulis group 4 rules!). Many of the new tutors are my friends, and I can guarantee they will make sure you have as much fun as humanly possible! My most important tip is to attend EVERY single event. It might feel like a lot of drinking, but it is truly worth it. You will get a great overview of all the committees and clubs within SHS, and you will definitely findsomething you want to join yourself. I am active in the student union myself and a member of Casa Nostra. It will become very clear to each and every one of you why CN is the best thing you can be a part of. See you as early as September 5th at your first party at Casa, and at all the other amazing events we are organizing for you! Even if you already know several people starting at Hanken, I highly recommend socializing with new people. It never hurts to have a lot of friends! Autumn is kicking off soon, and I cannot emphasize enough how much fun it is going to be! Treasure every moment, because it goes by super fast. I still can’t quite believe that my first year is already over. See you at Casa! Turn up!

Gulnäbbskomittén - Gekko Greetings from

Papi, Mami & Papi Hi freshers, and a warm welcome to Hanken and SHS! An autumn you’ll never forget is about to begin. The coming months will be filled with new people, new traditions, and experiences that will quickly make Hanken feel like home. Whether you already know someone or are coming here all on your own, there’s a place for you here. We’re the Gulnäbbskommittée - or Gekko, as most people know us. This fall, our goal is to make your transition to student life as smooth and fun as possible. We’ll help you find your way, answer your questions, and make sure you get to experience all the best parts of student life starting from your very first week. This year, Gekko consists of 24 tutors who are looking forward to meeting you. The committee is led by Papi Okki, along with Mami Minea and Papi Albe. In addition, you’ll have two personal tutors who will support you and your fresher’s group throughout the fall. Starting with the orientation days, the freshman fall season quickly picks up steam. Small fresher’s group events are combined with larger events, sitzes, and evenings at Casa. Along the way, you’ll make new friends, create memories, and experience traditions that many Hanken students still talk about years later. We hope you’ll dare to try as much as possible. Student life is what you make of it, and sometimes all it takes is showing up to meet people who will stay with you long after your Hanken days are over. If you want to stay up to date on everything happening this fall, you can find us at @shsgekko, and you’ll also get the most important updates via @shsmoments. We look forward to seeing you during orientation week. Once again - congratulations and a warm welcome to SHS! Exchange committee - EC Hi freshers, and a warm welcome to Hanken! The Exchange Committee, or EC, is the committee responsible for Hanken’s exchange students. We consist of 22 tutors and a president, all working together to give our exchange students an unforgettable time at Hanken. This autumn, we are also welcoming a record number of exchange students — a total of 140 — making it our biggest autumn ever. From the very first week, we are there to help the exchange students settle into student life and feel at home in Helsinki. Throughout the autumn, we organize Get2Gethers, sitz parties, bar tours, and many other events where both exchange students and Hankeites can get to know each other. We also arrange trips to places like Tallinn, Stockholm, and Lapland — experiences that create memories and friendships for life. The best thing about EC is the people. Together with the rest of the committee, you get to plan fun events, travel around Finland and the Nordics with the exchange students, and enjoy an autumn filled with new friendships and unforgettable moments. Does this sound like something for you? EC recruits twice a year, so keep an eye out in December! We hope to see you at our events this autumn! Matilda Skott

The student life at SHS is second to none, and there are so many great committees to get involved with. Whilst the Masters’ Committee may seem distant, let me tell you, you are closer than you think! The Masters’ Committee or MC for short, is a committee within SHS made up of 23 masters students always looking to have a good time. Our events include, bar crawls, afterwork, sitzes and networking events so get yourself down, we are a welcoming bunch and always love seeing new faces. Program Committee - PK (Programkommittén) Hey freshers, and a very warm welcome to Hanken and SHS! We are the Program Committee, or simply PK, and our mission is to make sure your student years are filled with laughter, community, and what we call the Good Life. During the autumn semester, you’ll get to experience several of our classic events. We organize the traditional Crayfish Party (Kräftskivan), SHS’s very own talent show, Skojrejs, an eventful Halloween sitz together with our friends from other student organizations, and we round off the semester with Goda Livet, an elegant three-course dinner accompanied by a wine tasting. But PK is about much more than just events. We have an amazing community that extends far beyond the events we organize. Does that sound like something for you? We hope you’ll apply to join PK when applications open towards the end of the year! Until then, you’re more than welcome to get to know us by attending our events. Congratulations once again on earning your place at Hanken, and welcome! We hope you’ll take every opportunity to experience everything student life has to offer, and, of course, that many of your best memories will be made together with us in PK. Don’t forget to follow us on Instagram @programkommitten! That’s where you’ll find information about all our upcoming events, ticket releases, and everything else happening throughout the year. If you have any questions, you’re always welcome to reach out to me.

We hope to see you at the Crayfish Party!

Casa Nostra - CN "Life is a party" This marks the beginning of the best years of your life! Your study time will be filled with parties and unforgettable evenings, and we, Casa Nostra, are mainly responsible for that. We are the student union's official party committee, and we organize the best parties in town! Casa Nostra (CN) has, since 1977, been tasked with quenching the endless party thirst of Hanken students. To meet this need, it requires a group that focuses solely on this, party planning. In their 49 years of activity, CN has ensured that the parties are the best of their kind. This autumn, we organize, among other things, Inledande, Gulismiddagen, and Julfesten, which you do not want to miss! Besides dancing on the dance floor, CN's parties are excellent opportunities to meet new people and get to know familiar faces from the lectures better. CN 2026 is called Conquestus Noctis, and we want to offer you the best entertainment a Hanken student could wish for, all year round. We are an energetic team of 22 people, all of whom love everything to do with parties and party organizing. However, life for us is not just work and toil; the best part about organizing parties is that you get to enjoy the party yourself, socialize with friends, mingle, and dance. Within CN, we are divided into different groups that are responsible for their own areas of party planning. Hosts and hostesses provide the magnificent taste experiences at the sitz’ ,the event team is responsible for the decorations and the program, and the royal spirits team ensures no one goes home thirsty. PR keeps everyone well-informed about the events and provides a tangible memory from the sitzs, a overall patch that represents the theme of the evening. Last but not least, we have the government, which consists of the president, treasurer, and vice president. Their task is to pull the strings and ensure that everyone else keeps up and guarantees that the parties are as good as possible. Life as a CN member gives so much! In addition to spending time with your 21 best friends, you also get to be part of the fantastic and open camaraderie of the most active part of the student union. Being a CN member is an experience you'll never forget. It provides experience for the future and is a great opportunity to meet new people. You are warmly welcome to all our parties! And if you think party planning is something for you - Apply to Casa Nostra 2027! More information about us can be found at www.shs.fi. You can also grab a CN member by the sleeve anytime if you have any questions.

See you at Casa!

Sports Committee - IK (Idrottskomittén)

Motion is potion During the academically intense freshman autumn, where you’ll be trying to survive Natikka, Navigator, and everything in between, it’s the Sports Committee’s mission to drag you away from the library and out to touch some grass. Over the past year, we’ve cooked up all kinds of events: rock climbing, beach volleyball, dancing, chess tournaments, and Barry’s brutal HIIT sessions, just to name a few. Together with seven other Swedish-speaking faculties, we also created the FinSveCup football tournament, where SHS absolutely dominated the competition and brought the trophy home to Casa. The travelling trophy is still proudly standing above the K-Market, shining over the whole of Arkadiankatu. We’d love to have freshmen who are passionate about our current activities or who want to start something completely new. We have both the enthusiasm and the budget to make almost anything happen—you just have to grab one of us and let us know! This autumn we’ve also got two big things coming up. First is RUSH Helsinki, where our newest freshmen get to celebrate making it into Hanken. The second one is still top secret, but let’s just say we’ll need a whole lot of enthusiastic freshmen to make it happen. See you at the next event! Warm regards, Mihai Barbalata

Information Comittee - INK (Informationskommitén) Hello and welcome, Fresher! The Information Committee (INK) would like to extend a warm welcome to Hanken and to a fall semester filled with new experiences, new friends, and unforgettable memories. Throughout the semester, you will surely come across us at many events—we’re the ones walking around with cameras in hand, so don’t hesitate to tap us on the shoulder if you’d like to be in a photo! I highly recommend taking the opportunity to participate in as many events as possible during your first time at Hanken. I promise that student life goes by faster than you think! After events, we publish the photos on Flickr, and through @shsink on Instagram, you can stay updated on when new albums are released. We never publish photos that we ourselves would not want to appear in, and if there is ever a photo you feel uncomfortable with, simply let us know and we will remove it. As SHS’s Information Committee, INK documents student life through photography, produces SHS’s own student magazine, Hankeiten (just like the magazine you are reading now), and ensures that all the wonderful things happening within SHS are preserved and remembered. Keep an eye out for this autumn’s issues on Issuu, and feel free to join us at our launch party, where we offer free caffeine and sell our own unique overall patches. However, INK is much more than just cameras and magazines. We are also a creative community where members can develop their skills and try new things. Throughout the year, we organize fun internal events, strengthen our close-knit community, and get to know new friends. With us, you will have the opportunity to explore activities such as photography, writing, layout design, marketing, and maintaining connections with the professional world. Whether you already have experience or are simply curious to try something new, you are more than welcome to apply! Do you have questions, ideas, or simply want to learn more about what we do? Feel free to come and talk to me or send an email to inkordf@shs.fi. The rest of INK and I look forward to meeting you—we’ll see you this autumn!

International Helsinki Days - IHD Hey Fresher! Congratulations on your study place, and a warm welcome to Hanken! I hope you’ve had an amazing summer and are excited for the upcoming academic year. The freshman autumn is an intense but truly unforgettable time, filled with parties, new friendships, and countless experiences. My best advice for making the most of it is simple: join as many events as you can. International Helsinki Days (IHD) is an international seminar week organized annually at Hanken. This year is especially exciting as the event celebrates its 40th anniversary, so expectations for this milestone year are higher than ever! In addition to the organizing committee of around 20 Hanken students, another 20–30 international students take part in the week. Guests from dozens of countries come to Helsinki to learn about Finnish business life, experience Finland-Swedish student culture, and create memories that last a lifetime. Last year’s highlights included company visits (to, among others, Amer Sports, Citibank, and VML), an unforgettable cottage trip, and of course several fantastic sitz dinners! The very best part of IHD, however, is the incredible sense of community and the lifelong friendships you build, both within the committee and with our international guests. Apply to join IHD if you want to help organize what many consider the best week of their studies and experience one of Hanken’s most cherished traditions!

Annual Ball Committee - ÅFK Hi, dearest Fresher!

(Årsfestkommittén)

Get ready for the most magnificent event of the year: the SHS Annual Ball! Known as the Best Party in the Universe, this unforgettable highlight of the academic year always leaves participants with memories to cherish for a lifetime. Mark your calendars already now, as this extraordinary celebration will traditionally take place on 24–25 February 2027. The date also holds special significance, as it marks the anniversary of the introduction of freedom of trade in Finland. The Annual Ball Committee (ÅFK) is responsible for organizing the entire event, and preparations for the 118th anniversary promise to make it something truly special. The committee is led by a President and consists of an amazing group of members, each with their own area of responsibility. Together, we create a celebration filled with glamour, joy, and community spirit. Preparations involve everything from planning the programme and coordinating with the venue to securing sponsors and maintaining relationships with partners. ÅFK functions as a team where everyone works towards the same goal: creating a celebration that both guests and organizers will remember dearly for years to come. As soon as the Annual Ball has come to an end and the glitter has settled, it is time to assemble anew committee. Every member of the Student Union has the opportunity to apply to ÅFK during the spring. The most important qualities for becoming part of this brilliant team are an open-minded attitude, excellent teamwork skills, and a genuine passion for making the Annual Ball the highlight of the year for all attendees. The experience you gain will be both diverse and rewarding. In ÅFK, we do not only work to make the celebration extraordinary; we also strengthen the connections between SHS and the business community while creating opportunities for students to gain new experiences and make lifelong friends. Would you like to help create this magical event? Do not hesitate to contact us if you have ideas, would like to get involved, or simply want to learn more! Be sure to follow the Annual Ball Committee on Instagram, @shsafk, for updates and behind-the-scenes insights. P.S. Remember that Annual Ball tickets tend to sell out quickly—keep an eye on the information channels and do not miss your chance to be part of the celebration!

We hope to see you in February!

The Business Committee (SHS Careers) Hi! My name is Emil Creutz, and I am now starting my fifth year at Hanken, majoring in Finance and Investments. I serve as the Board Member responsible for Corporate Relations and am also the President of SHS Careers. With so many majors to choose from, it can sometimes be confusing and difficult to look several years ahead and know what you actually want to do for a living. That is why it is our mission at SHS Careers and within the Student Union to provide social and professional opportunities that help you explore the many career paths and possibilities that a business education can offer. SHS Careers connects students with companies and the business community. We organize everything from company visits to larger events such as Hanken Network Day and other networking opportunities. Through these events, you will have the chance to meet alumni and other experienced professionals who were once first-year students themselves and are happy to share their careers and experiences. Through our corporate partnerships, we can also offer activities at reduced prices and other benefits that students can take advantage of during their studies. If you would like to get even more involved, you can join the Overall Team, which works to secure sponsors for the student overalls distributed in the autumn.

If you perform well, you may even receive your overalls free of charge and have a lasting reminder on them that you were active from the very beginning of your studies! Follow us on Instagram: @careers.shs and on SHS LinkedIn to stay up to date with our events and activities. Congratulations on your study place! Make the most of your time at Hanken by building friendships, networking, attending events, and daring to try new things. This is where you will build both the foundation for your future and memories that will last a lifetime.

Kind regards, Emil Creutz President, SHS Careers 2026

The Social Committee - SOPO (Sociala Utskottet)

Hi there! In the Committee of Social Affairs (SOPO) we focus on working with students' wellbeing and interests both internally and externally. The committee offers events and services to our members that promote wellbeing in one way or another. At SHS, promoting wellbeing means working on many different levels and addressing various aspects of wellbeing: mental, physical, social, sexual and financial wellbeing, and more.

The members of the SOPO help with organizing events and lobbying both within and in cooperation with Hanken and other external interests. During meetings we discuss and brainstorm how these issues should be handled. The most important thing is that we hear different opinions and that we have an interest in working on these issues. The committee also works on equality and the prevention of harassment. You can find the latest news on social policy, equality work and student benefits and services on Instagram at @shsmoments and @sopoutskottet.

The committee has been in place for two Enjoy your summer and then your study years so events and services are still time! developing. Events that have been organized include Wellbeing Week, which is held both in the autumn and spring, Pride, charity talks and mindfulness exercises. Student life is hectic with studies, parties and interesting activities and it can be very stressful. The aim of the committee is to ease that. Other social affairs the committee is working on include monitoring interest with UniSport and the DEl (diversity, equity and inclusion) plan with Hanken.

The Education Committee - UU As a student at a university, you have constitutionally protected opportunities to influence your everyday life. There are ways to be active and express your opinion about your studies, so that the education can develop into the best possible version for us students. Sometimes influencing requires more than just one student with one voice, and that is where the Education Committee comes in. By law, the student union has the right to have representation in all bodies at the university, and this responsibility lies with the so‑called student representatives. The Education Committee consists of these student representatives, around 40 in total, located on both the Helsinki and Vasa campuses. The committee’s activities are coordinated by the Chair of the Education Committee (in Helsinki) and the Vice Chair (in Vasa). These student representatives may, for example, be responsible for an Institutional Council (IR), which deals with subject‑specific matters, or they may sit on the University Collegium, which handles broader questions about Hanken’s direction and future. Other bodies you can be part of include the Education Council (UR), the Language Centre, and various working groups. Representatives for these bodies are elected whenever needed, and announcements are published on shs.fi and on

social media. The role is often compensated and provides opportunities to network with many active members of the student union as well as university staff. However, the Education Committee is not exclusively for student representatives, as anyone who wants to influence their education or has a clever idea is welcome to join. We are a relatively new committee (founded in 2016), so there is still plenty to develop, and I encourage you to get involved and help shape it. If you have questions about your studies or feel that something at Hanken could be improved, you should always contact a student representative who can take your issue forward! You can find us on Instagram @uu_shs Veeti Ståhlberg

You will feel more energetic, sleep better and have more stamina, and you get all of that just by showing up. Throughout the year, we aim for one group run per week, jogging sessions with different company representatives and other fun activities. Källargardet Deep down in Casa's basement, inside the Student Union's own bomb shelter, a mysterious society was reborn during the pandemic – Källargardet. With Legenda as its home base and beer culture as its mission, this small group of SHS students of all ages has revived something that had long been dormant: cellar nights. For those who don't know, it's about more than just partying. It's a tradition. A place to meet new faces, laugh out loud, and enjoy good drinks. The members of Källargardet, known as Gardists, aim to strengthen the sense of community and student life at the Student Union through these basement evenings. During the coming academic year, you'll be able to take part in events such as the Burj Khalifa Tournament and the Japanese Game Show. Old favourites like the 100 Club and Beer Pong tournaments are also making a return. Gardists live by a simple philosophy: the party isn't over until the cup is empty, and there's never a wrong time to have a drink in the middle of the week. Our events include unlimited refreshments to make sure your thirst stays quenched throughout the evening. Follow @kallargardet on Instagram to stay up to date, and get ready for an autumn you won't forget. Welcome to Hanken, and especially to Legenda. We look forward to sharing an exciting year full of unforgettable events with all of you!

Vinsällskapet Hanken’s Wine Society is a sophisticated club for bon vivants and wine lovers. We are excited to introduce you to the beautiful world of wine and enjoy together. Since the revival of the club, we have become increasingly active over the years and have even created traditional events such as: • Wine 101 • Bubbeltasting (ÅFK) • Wine & Paint In addition to the events we organize for Hankeits, we also organize a lot of internal events for club members. If this sounds like something that suits you, we have recruitment at the end of the fall semester. Wine Society members range from first year students to eternal students, so don't hesitate to apply! We are happy to answer any questions about wine or our activities, and wish you a great start to your studies! Hanken Equity Research Fund

Freshers Hankeit 26 - 47

HERC is a student-run equity research club at Hanken. Our members analyse listed companies, build valuation models, and produce full research reports that we publish on our website twice a year. Analysts work in pairs, each covering a listed company from the ground up: financial modelling, valuation, and an independent investment view, culminating in a published report. We teach the full process through a structured program, so a basic grasp of finance is enough. We recruit once a year in the spring. Follow us to see our published research and to hear when applications open. Instagram: @hercshs Website: herc.fi

Hankstats Hello, we are Hankstats, and we organize events for Hanken students who are interested in various social games such as poker, chess, and backgammon. We are planning to expand our range of events to include trips, among other things. The club was founded in 2024, but we have already hosted many successful events together with, for example, Källargardet and Aalto KY’s poker club KY_Vegas. So far, we’ve received a lot of positive feedback, and we are working hard to continuously improve our events. Our goal is to offer a calm, pleasant, and fun atmosphere where all Hanken students can feel welcomed regardless of previous experience. With us, you can relax and play while also getting the chance to socialize with other Hanken students and make new connections. We want our events to be a place where you can escape study stress and have fun in good company. Find us and information about upcoming events on Instagram @Hankstats. We hope to see you soon!

HankAI

Hi Freshers!AI is not coming for business. It is already here, rewriting how decisions get made and what employers look for in their next hire. The only question left is whether you're the one holding the tools, or the one being replaced by someone who is.HankAI is SHS's student-led club for business and economics students who want to be the ones holding the tools. No computer science background required, no jargon, just curiosity about business and the drive to understand what AI actually means for your career and the world around you. Our mission is to form the AI-literate business thinkers of tomorrow. We believe business thinkers, not engineers alone, solve the real problems companies face when they're given the right AI tools to build with. That's why at HankAI, thinkers become builders. We run hackathons where members build real AI products, hands-on workshops, and open panel discussions with practitioners from the industry. We also organise office visits to companies actually implementing AI, because there's a lot of noise and misinformation about AI in business floating around social media, and we'd rather you see the real picture and learn the real skills. Our vision reaches beyond Hanken. We want to impact the Finnish, Nordic, and even EU economy by building a generation of business thinkers who are AI-literate, thinkers who become hyperproductive "super workers" capable of applying AI where it actually matters.Membership is open to all Hanken students, regardless of major or year. Come to an event, join a workshop, or help build something real. There's a seat for every level of curiosity. Want to know more? Extra Active Gulisar - EAG Extra Active Gulisar, also known as EAG, is a club that is run entirely by you, the Freshers and Gulis. Being an EAG member is an amazing way to connect and work with your peers outside your tutor group and from the other program. It's also a great opportunity to get to know SHS, the student union, all while having a bunch of fun! Being a member of EAG makes you a strong candidate for other clubs and committees after the fall. Being active in the club and taking initiative is seen as a great thing and can help your applications to clubs and committees. It also won’t interfere with your plans of joining other groups since EAG is only during the fall and it helps you get familiar with SHS and events as well. During your time at EAG, you’ll organize events on your own, most notably the Beer Olympics and the EAG sits. You’ll also perform in SHS’s Skojreis talent show. But don’t worry, you'll still be able to enjoy the events hosted by other committees. Convinced? Great! And if you still have any questions, feel free to ask your tutors or any former EAG members, since many of them stayed active in the student union. More info is coming your way during the initiation weeks, so stay tuned, stay curious, show up, and whatever you do: Don't miss out on EAG!

IB Bookstore Hello! First of all, we’d like to give you a huge congratulations on your study place at Hanken! We can’t wait to meet you this autumn. IB Bookstore is Hanken’s very own bookstore, and you’ll find us on the ground floor of Hanken, right next to “Skogen”. From us, you can buy all kinds of study essentials, such as pens, notebooks, and course compendiums that you’ll need for some of your introductory courses. You can also rent one of the lockers located in “Skogen”, as well as rent or buy a CAS calculator, which you’ll most likely need at some point during your years at Hanken. Besides study materials, we also sell both SHS and Hanken merchandise! You’ll find tote bags, water bottles, pens, caps, shirts, and much more featuring the Hanken or SHS logos. You’ll also probably need the official SHS songbook, as well as SHS overall patches and other student-life essentials, all of which you can find in our store. Last but not least, you can purchase printing credits, which you’ll need to use the printers around Hanken. If you need something printed while you’re here, we’re happy to help with that too! Welcome to IB Bookstore! Sooner or later you’ll end up stopping by anyway, so you might as well come and say hi from the very beginning. You can reach us anytime by email at ib@hanken.fi or on Instagram @ib_bokhandel. See you soon!

SESS

Svenska ekonomie studenters stiftelse (SESS) is a foundation that supports Hankeit’s social, intellectuel and study related ambitions. The foundation can fulfill its purpose by supporting students during their studies, at the beginning of their careers, or when they start their own businesses. In addition, the foundation supports initiatives to organize events between students and alumni, initiatives related to student health and well-being, as well as other activities that further the foundation's purpose. The foundation primarily supports initiatives that benefit several people over individuals. As a Hankeit, you have the opportunity to take part in the board of a limited company! This is made possible through the two "Student Union Companies" owned by SESS: Svecasa and Casa Securities (IB Bookstore). You'll definitely visit the IB Bookstore during the fall to buy study materials, print credits, or overall patches and Svecasa provides a prep course for business school admission. The companies also offer suitable part-time jobs for 1–5 motivated students each year. The foundation also co-owns the company Academic Business Consulting, which is actually a master's-level course at Hanken. The course simulates consulting work, and participants are responsible for selling and carrying out a project for a company. The revenue generated from these projects funds a study trip abroad for the group. In 2025, the group travelled to Seoul, South Korea! You can find more information about the foundation, the companies, and the application period and criteria for funding on SHS.fi. If you have any questions, feel free to contact the foundation’s chairperson, Erika Andréasen, either in person or by emailing sess@shs.fi.

Student overalls STUDENT OVERALLS (HAALART / HALARE) A Brief History Finnish higher education students wear colorful overalls— known as haalarit (or halare in Swedish)—during their studies. The tradition originally traces back to technology students (teekkarit), who started wearing their work coveralls outside their machine shops at parties and informal gatherings. It didn't take long for the custom to spread: around 1974, student unions like SHS adopted blue overalls, before transitioning to their iconic white version. While brand-new overalls start pristine, they quickly shed their original look. The magic of the overall is simple: it is your indestructible party suit. Wearing it means you can sit in the mud, crawl across lawns, sleep on park benches, or swim without worrying about ruining your everyday clothes. It brings back the childhood joy of splashing around without a care in the world. Decorating & Embellishing Badges (Haalarimerkit) Over time, your overalls will accumulate a vibrant tapestry of colorful badges. Stains from spilled beer, cider, and questionable party snacks are inevitable, but badges are what give your suit its unique personality: The Rules: Certain custom rules dictate where specific badges belong—such as placing your primary student union or guild badge on a designated sleeve or leg pocket before filling up the rest of the space. Souvenirs: Badges are collected by attending student parties, pub crawls (appro), sit-sits (sitsit), and rallies. They serve as lifelong mementos of every event you survived.

Swapping Parts & Customization Another cherished tradition is exchanging overall parts with other students: Exchanging Pieces: Swapping collars, sleeves, or pockets is traditionally a sign of close friendship, romantic ties, or inter-university bonding. Pro-Tip: Always carry scissors, a needle, and sturdy thread in your pocket—especially during cold seasons, as walking home in -25°C weather missing half an overall leg can be quite chilly! Essential Accessories It is standard practice to attach utility items directly to your overall loops using carabiners: Bottle openers (the absolute #1 essential) Shot glasses or collapsible cups Toothbrushes (for emergency overnighters)

Freshers Hankeit 26 - 54

Student overalls Order and Tidiness: The Sacred Wash Rule CRITICAL RULE: The overall you wear must NEVER be washed in a washing machine! The dirtier and smellier your overall is, the more seasoned a partygoer you appear to be. Stains are badges of honor proving you’ve been through the trenches of student life. The overall functions as a hybrid raincoat, mud suit, and party uniform. The Emergency Exception: If cleaning becomes an unavoidable emergency (e.g., when the dance floor empties as soon as you walk in), there is exactly one traditional way to clean it: Put the overall on. Pour liquid pine soap (mäntysuopa) directly onto yourself. Jump directly into the sea or a lake. Overall Parties & Celebrations If you are wondering when to wear your overalls, the rule of thumb is straightforward: wear them to student parties, crawls, and outdoor rallies, never to formal academic ceremonies or non-overall events.

Vappu / Wappen (May Day): The grand climax of the student calendar runs from late April into early May (celebrated heavily on April 30th and May 1st). This is when thousands of students take to the streets, parks, and post-party picnics in full overall regalia to celebrate the end of winter. Etiquette: The only people who don't wear overalls to these events are self-proclaimed "too cool" crowd members—who inevitably regret their outfit choices the next day. Earning Your Overalls & Post-Grad Life Freshers (Gulis / Fuksi): New students earn the right to wear their overalls later in the autumn after completing orientation tasks and gathering required fresher points. Receiving them marks your official entry into the student community. Sense of Belonging: No matter your background, slipping into the same overall creates instant unity and camaraderie with your peers. After Graduation: Once you graduate, your overall becomes a cherished relic. You can still pull it out for alumni events or Vappu celebrations, fully proving that student spirit never truly expires!

There are many spaces in Casa that Student Union members have at their disposal during their years at Hanken, namely: Kåren, Casa, Legenda, Femman and the Sauna. All of these spaces are different and are used for different purposes. All of these spaces can be booked for free by any SHS member. We will introduce you to all these spaces in the beginning of the fall. Partying is a big part of the student culture in Finland. In our student union SHS, different committees organise various parties, and there is something for everyone. The most common type of partying is called a "Sitz". A sitz is basically a three course dinner where all the students eat, drink and sing songs while sitting together at long tables. The food is usually more like snacks, so make sure you eat beforehand. Your drink rations consist of a shot, some wine and a beer or cider, but

In between all the exams and assignments, we sitz regularly. As a freshman, everything is new and you are forgiven for any mistakes, but when you are no longer one of the newbies, you should know how to sitz. Here is a description of how a well-behaved Hanken student should behave during a sits. In order to avoid clichés, we’ll skip a lot of anecdotes and lead directly with a practical example.

depending on the sits. You can bring your own alcohol or buy some. The songs which are sung are called "snapsvisor". These are short songs you sing before you take a shot. The songs can be found in a songbook, which you can buy at the IB at school, but don't worry, you wil learn them fast! A sitz is always held at our dear Casa-buiding. Casa Academica is not only our party place, but is also the Student Union's home.

Time: Varies, usually 19 Location: Casa, of course Attire: Snippet snyggare (smart suit or dress), unless otherwise stated. Only wear your halare (overalls) if specifically stated.

Arrival time The time 19:00 means that you arrive between 19:00 and 19:10. The most fussy ones show up at 19:15 (the academic quarter, you know), to avoid giving the impression that they were standing outside the door the window (and writing nasty things in the fog) for the last hour. You arrive well dressed, and don't smell of booze (yet). If you have a guest with you, you naturally make an entrance with them. you look each other in the eyes and smile as you toast, Mingle

Frequently asked

Freshers Hankeit 26 - 59

Are the student events mandatory? No! But you should attend as many as you can! This way you will get the most out of your gulishöst. Additionally, going to events = get gulispoäng (read: gulispoints) to secure your overalls at the end of gulishöst (you will get more info on this later!) Does Hanken have a library? Yes! You can apply for a library card on Hanken's webpage and pick it up from the library. What if I fail a course? Sometimes sh*t happens and you fail a course. It really isn't a big deal, it just means that you have to repeat it the following year. Still, you should try your best not to fail, since some courses are mandatory for the exchange application etc. Is it okay if I don't drink alcohol? Totally fine! Many students don't drink, and there's no pressure. Almost every event has nonalcoholic options, and no one's fun depends on what's in their cup. What is a "Sångbok"? A sångbok (read: songbook) is a book filled with snapsvisor = drinking songs, which are sung at all the sitzes (=parties). You can get your own from IB. It is also a tradition to pass around your songbook and let your friends write lovely (or not so lovely) greetings on the pages. Always fun to wake up the next day and try to de-code the drunken scribbles all over the pages.

How do exams work? Exam weeks are at the end of each teaching period. You may have sit-in exams, where you have four hours to write (usually done on paper). Some courses offer E-exams, where you can book your own time-slot for the Examinarium (read more from Hanken's webpages). Sit-in exams have two retakes and E-exams have one. NB! Remember to sign up for the exams in time, since late regristrations are not accepted!

What is Moodle? Moodle is an online learning platform that is used at Hanken (Think Google classroom).

Is it hard to balance social life and studies? Sometimes it may feel like you are running out of minutes in a day - that is completely normal. The start of your studies can be extremely busy, with all the events, deadlines and other aspects of your life. Just try your best (and maybe invest in a calendar). Maybe you don't need to get a 5 from every course!

Is lecture attendance mandatory? Depends on the course. Professors will communicate this at the beginning of each course. It is recommended to attend lectures, even when not mandatory. This will help you not fall behind! What the f*ck?? This is a thought shared by many freshers. We know that all this information may seem extremely overwhelming, but just relax! It will all clear up as your studies progress.

Helsinki 101 Finland & Helsinki in general The weather varies a lot, so prepare with real warm clothes. Evenings can get cold really quick. During the winter get a good warm jacket, layering is important. Good pair of winter boots you can’t rock loafers for too long in the slush Try out the food markets for some local foods. Fazer cafe, perfect spot to try finnish food and study at the same time.

Studying in Finland You have quite a lot of freedom. Come up with routines so you don’t fall behind on studies, professors will not check up on you whether you are keeping up with the work load.

Student life What can you expect from student life? Pikkulauantai, it doesn’t really matter what day it is, there is always time for a party. Sitzes, fun dinner parties organized by different committees and clubs Vappu, biggest student event of the year! Mantan lakitus Årsfest, annual celebration of Hanken. Overalls, your personal student costume. Approt, big bar crawls organized for students all over Finland. Casa, your second home
