Saving Lives Since 2006 St. Vincent de Paul – Cincinnati (SVDP) has been serving neighbors in need throughout Greater Cincinnati for over 150 years. In 2006, SVDP collaborated with Class 27 of Leadership Cincinnati to launch the Charitable Pharmacy.

Since its inception, it has been revolutionizing pharmaceutical care and helping vulnerable residents of Hamilton, Butler, Clermont, and Warren Counties access free prescription medications.

The Need for Medication Access The Charitable Pharmacy sees daily the effects of expensive prescriptions: neighbors skip doses, take lower doses, cut pills in half, or stop filling their prescriptions all together. These challenges are heightened for older, low-income adults—who make up over 75% of Charitable Pharmacy patients.

According to the 2020 U.S. Census, there are over 80,000 people in southwest Ohio without health insurance. In Clermont County alone, more than 12,000 residents do not take their medications as prescribed due to high costs.

Despite having two locations of the Charitable Pharmacy open for 64 total hours each week, patients still face significant barriers to care. Some neighbors drive from as many as 40 miles to fill their prescriptions, and the wait to be certified as a Charitable Pharmacy patient can be several weeks.

The Charitable Pharmacy recognizes that it must do more to improve access to prescription medications and to develop systems to ensure its innovative services will continue to be available to neighbors in need.

PRESCRIBING HOPE: EXPANDING THE PHARMACY FOR NEIGHBORS IN NEED

The SVDP Charitable Pharmacy is launching the Prescribing Hope Campaign to directly address the challenges neighbors face with their prescription medications. The Prescribing Hope Campaign will improve access to care for neighbors in need, expand pharmaceutical programs and operations, and enhance the long-term sustainability of the Charitable Pharmacy. Most importantly, this campaign will improve the health and well-being of patients and save lives.

The Prescribing Hope Campaign will raise $5MM to accomplish the following: 1. Expand access to pharmaceutical care for neighbors in need. a. Third location: The Charitable Pharmacy will open a third location inside of SVDP’s expanded Milford Thrift Store.

This will allow patients who live east of Cincinnati to better access care. b. Additional hours: The Charitable Pharmacy will increase weekly hours of operation at its Western Hills location, first expanding to 3.5 days per week and eventually moving to 4.5 days per week. c. Expanded service area: As a result of its eastward expansion, the Charitable Pharmacy will expand its reach by serving residents of not only Hamilton, Butler, Clermont, and Warren Counties but also Adams, Brown, Clinton, and Highland Counties. d. Broadened operations: The Charitable Pharmacy will broaden existing operations by growing emergency prescriptions, enhancing nurse practitioner-led health services, and strengthening clinical programs.

2. Enhance the Charitable Pharmacy’s sustainability through the creation of a Pharmacy Assistance Fund which will support the following: a. Increased staffing needs: As the Charitable Pharmacy opens its Milford branch and operates three locations simultaneously, it will require additional pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and patient advocates. b. Procurement of donated medications: Through new partnerships and innovations, the Charitable Pharmacy will grow its sources of donated medications. This will be critical to continue filling the majority of prescriptions with donated medication and to protect against future drug supply chain disruptions. c. Engagement of experiential learners: The Charitable Pharmacy will expand opportunities for volunteers and pharmacy learners (fellows, residents, students) to participate in experiential education and thereby further enhance its staffing to operate three locations simultaneously. d. Expansion of navigation services: The Charitable Pharmacy will improve navigation services to help patients with other care options transition out of the Charitable Pharmacy and create room for new patients without other options.
