DEAR FRIENDS, Neighbors who turn to St. Vincent de Paul for assistance often face situations that are decidedly complicated, but are unfortunately common, as far too many in our community experience great levels of need. Some do not know where their next meal will come from. Others are struggling to pay their bills after losing shifts at work. Many are facing eviction and are on the verge of losing a stable home. This was the reality before the pandemic and continues to be the reality, at a heightened level, today. While the need for assistance is great, the good news is this – so is the generosity of people like you. You helped provide nourishment through the groceries distributed to shoppers at our Becky and Ted Catino Choice Food Pantry. You helped provide comfort through fans and air conditioners in the summer and coats, hats and scarves in the winter. You helped provide relief by paying rent and utility bills that kept thousands of families in their homes. More than anything, you helped provide hope and help, reinforcing the inherent dignity of each person who called on us for aid. The year 2021 was, by all means, extraordinary. Our thrift stores welcomed many new and returning customers – resulting in more merchandise being sold than ever before. At our Don & Phyllis Neyer Outreach Center, after 15 months of serving neighbors curbside and over the phone, we reopened walk-in services in July, providing more opportunities for person-to-person service. And, as we continued to receive a high number of calls from neighbors needing assistance, we provided over $3.5 million in rent and utilities assistance -- $1.4 million more than we provided in fiscal year 2020. As we faced the challenges of another pandemic year in 2021, we also continued to piece together new plans for our future. You can read more about that on pages 12-14, as we lay out exciting additions for our Charitable Pharmacy – and, as we debut our Clothing & Home Resource Center, a new space dedicated to providing free clothing, beds and other household goods to our neighbors. It does not escape us that this organization would not have the capacity to serve so many, nor the ability to look to the future, without the tremendous help of our supporters. Our Vincentians, our volunteers, our community partners, our donors – YOU truly bring our mission to life. You are there for our neighbors in times of uncertainty, when there may be seemingly no other options, and nowhere else to turn to for help. While the future still remains unclear, we are certain that as long as there is need, there will be people like you, raising their hands to help. For that, we sincerely thank you. “It is our vocation to set people’s hearts ablaze, to do what the Son of God did, who came to light a fire on earth in order to set it ablaze with His love.” – Bl. Frederic Ozanam, Founder Society of St. Vincent de Paul

“I was terrified I was going to lose everything.” – Heather

STABILITY IN A TIME OF UNCERTAINTY For Heather, moving from an apartment to a rental house meant her kids finally had a safe place to play outside. But when she was laid off from her job and fell behind on rent, she worried she could be on the verge of homelessness – again. That’s when she reached out to St. Vincent de Paul. Heather’s call for help was answered by Resurrection of Our Lord Conference, a small but mighty group of Vincentians who help hundreds of West Price Hill neighbors with basic needs each year. Heather says she was within days of receiving an eviction notice when Sharon, the Vincentian who had taken on her case, called her to tell her St. Vincent de Paul could help. In addition to funds raised by Resurrection of Our Lord Church parishioners, Sharon had secured funding from two other local Conferences through a process called twinning. She also applied and received aid from the Ed & Joann Hubert Family Conference Assistance Fund to pull together the entire sum – nearly $1,500 – Heather needed to keep her family in their home. Now back to work, Heather says Sharon was like “an angel” during her time of need. “She went above and beyond to help me,” Heather recalls. In the past year, St. Vincent de Paul distributed over $712,604 in direct assistance, most commonly for rent or utilities, to over 1,500 families through the Ed & Joann Hubert Family Conference Assistance Fund, a 107% increase over fiscal year 2020. Thanks to this critical resource, the generosity of many supporters at Cincinnati’s Catholic parishes and the steadfast work of its Vincentians, St. Vincent de Paul served 36,241 neighbors through its Conferences in 2021, helping them to find stability – and hope.

OUTREACH PROGRAMS BED PROGRAM Seven-year-old Lakeeva smiles as a group of volunteers carry a new, twin-sized mattress and bed frame into her grandmother’s apartment. For Lakeeva and her grandmother, the delivery is a welcome sight: without a proper bed, Lakeeva had been falling asleep at night on the floor.

wraparound basic needs support. Over the past year, 37 neighbors participated in this transformational initiative. In an effort to respond to the evolving needs of the community, St. Vincent de Paul developed and launched Working Better Together in 2021. Through this program, SVDP empowers new employees at its thrift stores with job readiness training, mentorship, and the support of a small cohort. Working Better Together will continue to expand in 2022, as part of our effort to incorporate more systemic change programming, as identified in our Upward Together Strategic Operating Plan.

Lakeeva is one of 50 children who received a new bed through Day to Dream, a partnership with WCPO 9, Morris Home Furniture and Mighty Men, a Crossroads Church volunteer group, which raises awareness and support for neighbors in need of a safe place to sleep at night through a one-day SEASONAL & HOLIDAY event and telethon campaign. ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS St. Vincent de Paul’s Bob & Sylvia Rahe Bed Program provided 864 beds to neighbors throughout the year – including 347 for children like Lakeeva. For neighbors facing difficult circumstances, such as housing instability, domestic abuse, pest infestations or economic hardship, the purchase of a bed can be simply unaffordable. By providing mattresses, box springs and bed frames, St. Vincent de Paul offers these families comfort and support. RE-ENTRY St. Vincent de Paul provides ongoing assistance to neighbors affected by the justice system, including returning citizens (formerly incarcerated individuals) and their families. Since 2019, one component of this aid has been Upward to Work, a workplace preparedness program offering skills training, job placements and

FAN & A/C DISTRIBUTION Every day, families across Greater Cincinnati struggle to afford basic necessities – such as food, clothing or medicine. That’s why St. Vincent de Paul helps make the dog days of summer a little easier with the Fan and A/C Distribution, presented by Braun Heating and Air Conditioning. This program has helped ease the burdens brought on by oppressive heat and humidity, felt especially by neighbors with medical conditions, families with young children and the elderly, for the past 20 years. In 2021, we provided heat relief to a record number of families, distributing 897 box fans and 731 air conditioning units. Adjustments to our distribution model, including using an online request form for A/C units, helped to increase accessibility to this form of assistance. We are sincerely

WINTER COAT DISTRIBUTION* Each winter, St. Vincent de Paul collects coats, hats, mittens and more to distribute to our neighbors. With the help of partners WLWT, Warm 98.5, Gold Star Chili, LeMasters Consulting, New Riff Distilling and over 140 other businesses, schools and churches, we collected thousands of coats to share warmth and comfort with those in need. This winter, we provided 1,881 neighbors with a coat through three distribution events. We also continued to offer vouchers for coats at our Neyer Outreach Center, and have distributed over 172 more coats (at time of printing) through this model.

CHRISTMAS JOY* Spreading the joy of Christmas is a cherished tradition at St. Vincent de Paul, and this year, we reached more families than ever before! Thanks to the many supporters who gave to our Angel Toy program, Christmas Together and Tepee Giving Tree, 2,885 children unwrapped presents this Christmas, making the holidays brighter for 1,051 families in need. We could not have fulfilled so many requests for gift assistance without the hundreds of individuals, businesses, schools and other groups who organized toy collections, purchased presents, sorted donations, and so much more. Thank you! *These programs reflect results for programs held in fiscal year 2022

LIFE-SUSTAINING CARE After picking up her prescriptions at St. Vincent de Paul’s Deaconess Health Check / Charitable Pharmacy, Jennie gets into her car and cries. The gratitude she feels is overwhelming. “I am not sure what I would do without the Charitable Pharmacy.” Jennie has worked all her adult life. Now 67 years old, Jennie continues to work to be able to afford to live. Wages from her full-time job and assistance from Medicare are simply not enough for Jennie to afford the hefty copays on her medications, totaling in the thousands each month. Over the years, she has withdrawn $20,000 from her retirement account just to pay for her prescribed medications. Now, Jennie has prescriptions filled at no cost, thanks to the Charitable Pharmacy. “Without the Charitable Pharmacy, I would still be making decisions about what I can and can’t afford,” Jennie asserts. “Now I don’t have to do that, and it has made a world of difference.” In the 2021 fiscal year, St. Vincent de Paul Charitable Pharmacy filled 70,190 prescriptions valued at nearly $10.7 million, saving the local healthcare system an estimated $5.3 million in emergency room visits, hospital stays, and other costs.

With the start of 2022, the Charitable Pharmacy launched a new 3-year strategic plan, Prescribing Hope. This plan seeks to improve the health of underserved residents through expanded access to pharmaceutical care and to enhance the Charitable Pharmacy’s sustainability as its reach continues to grow. Excitingly, this plan includes the opening of a third location of the Charitable Pharmacy inside St. Vincent de Paul’s Milford Thrift Store. This will give patients who live east of Cincinnati better access to care. Hours of operation will increase at the existing Charitable Pharmacy at the Western Hills Thrift Store, too. The plan also calls for the Charitable Pharmacy to enhance its nurse practitioner-led health services, to expand opportunities for volunteers and pharmacy learners to support the program, and to grow its sources of donated medications. St. Vincent de Paul recently began the quiet phase of a $5MM campaign to directly address barriers neighbors face to receiving their medications, and ultimately ensure more neighbors can access life-sustaining services at the Charitable Pharmacy.

CLOTHING AND HOME RESOURCE CENTER “This is the best place… I found everything I need here.” –Curtis, Clothing & Home Resource Center shopper

Pay a visit to any of our eight Greater Cincinnati thrift stores, and you’re bound to find quality clothing, décor, and household goods at affordable prices. Our thrift stores are an essential part of what we do – generating significant support that helps fund our programs and services. Even further, our thrift stores help ensure neighbors have access to the basics through our voucher program, which provided $419,229 worth of clothing and furniture to struggling families at no cost in 2021.

Neighbors who receive our vouchers for clothing and housewares now have a new resource to turn to. The Clothing and Home Resource Center opened in the fall of 2021, filling the space on the first floor of the Liz Carter Center, formerly home to the Lindner Family Choice Food Pantry, Charitable Pharmacy, front desk and lobby, welcome rooms, loading dock and more. With these services now housed in the Neyer Outreach Center, this area has been efficiently transformed into a dignified retail space exclusively for neighbors shopping with vouchers. Now, neighbors who are issued a voucher at the Neyer Outreach

Center need only to cross the street to access the essentials they need. The Clothing and Home Resource center is also the primary location for bed pickups through our Rahe Bed Program. Making services more accessible to neighbors by co-locating them and offering concurrent operating hours has been a major focus of our 5-year Upward Together Strategic Operating Plan. We are grateful for this new space, which is now making the process for redeeming a clothing or household voucher easier than ever before.

PRESCRIPTION ‘FORE’ FUN GOLF OUTING For 14 years, supporters have teed up to support the Charitable Pharmacy at our annual golf outing and wine and bourbon tasting. Last year was no exception, with over $82,000 being generated to help fill over 6,300 prescriptions for the uninsured or underinsured. Special thanks to our title sponsors, Home City Ice and Protective Life Corporation, for their support of this initiative.

Our day-to-day operations rely on the support of our dedicated volunteers. In 2021, volunteers performed 30,393 hours of service at our Neyer Outreach Center alone.

CELEBRATION OF SERVICE Becky Catino and Bart Kohler, both former Board Chairs, who also served as co-chairs of our Upward Spiral Comprehensive Campaign, were recognized at the sixth annual Celebration of Service event. Generous contributions from event sponsorships, ticket sales and our fund appeal raised over $395,000 in Catino and Kohler’s honor to support our Homelessness Prevention Program. The Catinos led the generosity with the announcement of a major gift to create the Becky Catino Women’s Stability, Employment and Empowerment Program. Please save the date for our next Celebration of Service, honoring Sherie Marek and Linda Mueller, for May 19, 2022.

Whether you’re seeking to join your parish’s Conference of SVDP, mobilize a group for a day of service or volunteer regularly as an individual, we have a multitude of opportunities to get involved. We invite you to consider joining us at SVDPcincinnati.org/volunteer.
