DEAR FRIENDS, This was an absolutely amazing year. We fed more of our neighbors through our food pantries than ever before. We sold more merchandise in our thrift stores than ever before. We provided more medicine, more clothing and furniture vouchers, and more rent and utility assistance than ever before. We provided more beds and bus passes than ever before. We have more Vincentians doing the great work of the Society than ever before. We launched Upward to Work, a program to help formerly incarcerated people not only find jobs but get out of poverty.

With your generosity, we concluded our $12 million Upward Spiral Comprehensive Campaign. The campaign enabled us to open our new Don and Phyllis Neyer Outreach Center and to create our Ed and Joann Hubert Family Conference Assistance Fund, all of which will provide greater access to our services for our neighbors. More details about the campaign can be found in the Upward Spiral Campaign Conclusion and Impact Report, which is built into the last eight pages of this report.

We did all of this while celebrating our 150th anniversary as a district council in Cincinnati. Throughout the course of the last year, we recognized our century-and-a-half of helping our neighbors in need in whatever humble ways we could.

Woven throughout all of this, however, was a common thread: YOU. An organization doesn’t have such a busy year or serve for 150 years without riding on the shoulders of some very strong people, and we are blessed in that regard.

Our Vincentians, our supporters, our volunteers—you are the ones who continually make this such an amazing organization, and for that we say, thank you.

As you read through this Annual Report, take time to notice all of the ways you made an impact. You provided coats for warmth, toys for happiness and beds for rest. You helped people find jobs, get to work and stay cool in the summer. You gave help and, most importantly, hope.

CELEBRATING 150 YEARS On March 26, 1869, in a room in the Convent of the Sisters of St. Clare on Third Street in downtown Cincinnati, six gentlemen met to discuss an idea.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul was already firmly established in Europe, and making its way to the United States.

Cincinnati was the seventh largest city in the country at the time, and national leaders thought Cincinnati would be a good place to grow. Before the meeting was adjourned, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was established in Cincinnati, and neighbors helping neighbors became the norm in the Queen City. Through the decades, much has changed and much has stayed the same. This year, as we set new benchmarks on the amount of help and hope we provided, we also took time to celebrate our past.

MASS AT ST. JOSEPH While Cincinnati has a long history, a few churches still remain from when St. Vincent de Paul got started 150 years ago. St. Joseph Catholic Church in the West End is one of those churches, dating back to 1846. As the closest church to St. Vincent de Paul’s offices, as well as being a Conference, the church proved to be a fitting spot to hold a Mass in which we thanked God for our founding in Cincinnati 150 years ago. Children from the church’s elementary school helped fill the sanctuary—which was adorned with photos of St. Vincent, Blessed Frederic, St. Louise and Blessed Rosalie—and listened as Fr. Rey Taylor mixed the homily with a history lesson of the Society.

CELEBRATION St. Vincent de Paul is in partnership with our neighbors in need, so it was only logical that they be invited to join in the celebration on the anniversary of our founding. As our neighbors lined up at the front desk to ask for assistance, a crowd gathered in the lobby of the Liz Carter Outreach Center, which was adorned with balloons and streamers, and offered up a blessing of thanks to God for the last 150 years. A cake adorned with a figurine of St. Vincent de Paul cradling two children was cut and offered to those who came into the building. It was a humble, simple celebration recognizing our history and acknowledging the importance of those we serve.

OPENING DAY PARADE A group of about 40 Vincentians, volunteers, Board members and staff members walked a mile and a half from Findlay Market to downtown Cincinnati in late March as part of the Cincinnati Reds Opening Day Parade. Supporters lined the streets along the entire route, providing cheers and applause as the group marched past, carrying inflatable baseball bats, baseball balloons a banner that read, “Two great organizations making Cincinnati better since 1869.” This year was also the Reds’ 150th anniversary.

Keeping with the baseball theme and shared Reds history, we honored Reds majority owner Bob Castellini at this year’s Celebration of Service.

On a cold but sunny Friday in early November, a crowd gathered outside of the Don and Phyllis Neyer Outreach Center. Backdrops were hung. Chairs were arranged. The moment was a long time coming. For more than three years a vision of a new outreach center capable of accommodating all of the services asked of St. Vincent de Paul slowly unfurled. Dreams became blueprints, and blueprints became bulldozers, concrete trucks and cranes.

Masons and plumbers and painters came and went. But as the crowd watched, what was once nothing more than a dream ceremoniously became a reality. Comments were made, ribbons were cut and the doors were opened.

With applause and gratitude, a new era in St. Vincent de Paul’s 150-year history had begun.

“St. Vincent de Paul operated out of our old building since 1962 and outgrew its capacity,” said Mike Dunn, executive director of St. Vincent de Paul– Cincinnati. “Our ability to serve our neighbors was hampered by the limitations of our physical space. We can now better meet their needs by expanding access to our services, both now and in the future.”

The 36,000-square-foot facility includes an expanded food pantry and charitable pharmacy, as well as a larger homelessness prevention services area, chapel, health services space— including Cincinnati Eye Institute, Deaconess Health Check and UC Open School clinics—call center and Conferences assistance area. It also includes a new teaching kitchen to help educate neighbors on the importance of healthy nutrition, as well as an education center that provides access to computers so neighbors can learn new skills and search for jobs.

“The new Center is truly for our neighbors,” said Becky Catino, co-chair of the Upward Spiral Comprehensive Campaign.

“Our goals are to provide the most dignified experience possible for families and provide better access to our emergency services. The Center allows us to meet those goals.”

“St. Vincent de Paul is a beacon of hope for our community,” added Bart Kohler, campaign co-chair. “With the opening of the Center, we can ensure more neighbors find the help and hope they need to move upward.”

CONFERENCES St. Vincent de Paul has a network of more than 1,100 Vincentians at 54 parish-based, four youth and two special works Conferences who provide person-to-person assistance to neighbors in need through home visits.

During these visits, Vincentians may offer their neighbors support in the form of rent or utility assistance, food, clothing and furniture. More important than the material aid they give, however, Vincentians provide friendship and spiritual support to the people they meet.

The four youth Conferences based at Mount Notre Dame, St. Ursula Academy and Roger Bacon high schools, as well as a joint youth conference based at our Neyer Outreach Center, provide students with an opportunity to help their neighbors through food and clothing drives, and other support.

St. Vincent de Paul Conferences helped 82,038 people through more than 29,542 home visits, with parish-based pantries providing food for 19,374 families.

RE-ENTRY Since its founding in 2014 as a pilot program to help formerly incarcerated citizens and their families integrate back into society, our Re-entry Program has helped more than 500 returning citizens find employment in our community. This year, it took a new and dramatic step, blending its employmentfinding tools with “Getting Ahead,” an intensive educational program that empowers participants to escape the cycle of poverty. The combined program, known as Upward to Work, graduated 21 people through two classes this year, accompanying those returning citizens on the path toward self-sufficiency.

THE OZANAM CENTER FOR SERVICE LEARNING In addition to providing a wide variety of direct assistance to our neighbors, another vital part of the mission of St. Vincent de Paul is to engage and educate community members on issues of poverty and justice, and to help grow a commitment to long-term service and systemic change. That mission is fulfilled by the Ozanam Center for Service Learning, which this year held 57 events, welcoming 1,082 youth, college and adult participants.

High school and college students experience weeklong service immersion retreats during which they explore issues of poverty and social justice while being encouraged to make a commitment to action for needed change. Confirmation students are empowered to embrace their Christian calling to serve others.

Adult faith-based, civic and professional groups participate in a Cincinnati Poverty Simulation, which highlights the realities of living in poverty and inspires action in solidarity with our neighbors in need.

VINCENTIAN VOLUNTEERS OF CINCINNATI Recognizing that young adults are our future, St. Vincent de Paul’s Vincentian Volunteers of Cincinnati program provides individuals between ages 21-30 the opportunity to explore their faith, engage in service and experience community life before they embark on their careers. VVC is a yearlong, faith-based, residential service program in which the members live in a renovated rectory close to St. Vincent de Paul’s offices, work full time alongside staff and develop professional skills, while devoting their time to the service of others in need.

Last year, VVC members completed 14,465 hours of service at St. Vincent de Paul. Since the program’s inception, 100 percent of participants have secured gainful employment, further education or an additional year of service within six months of completing their VVC year of service.

STORES

If you expand it, they will come.

That was the thinking when St. Vincent de Paul opened a new thrift store building in Milford in late 2018, doubling the size of the previous store.

And they came. In droves. So many people shopped at the new Milford store, in fact, that it more than doubled its sales in 2019, becoming second of the seven thrift stores in terms of revenue generation behind the Western Hills location, and pushed the overall thrift store operations to a new sales record.

The stores did more than just keep people looking good and saving them a lot of money, though. For many, they were a source of hope by providing $794,773 worth of free merchandise—clothing, furniture and household items—to our neighbors in need. They also accepted vouchers for the purchase of 1,157 beds through the Bob and Sylvia Rahe Mattress Fund, allowing a lot of people to sleep well at night.

FOOD PANTRIES The need for food never ends.

There will always be people who are hungry, and for some it’s a 365-days-a-year struggle.

Fortunately, St. Vincent de Paul is now in a better place to take on that challenge. With the opening of the Don and Phyllis Neyer Outreach Center, our Ted and Becky Catino Choice Food Pantry is now open six days a week, so neighbors can visit monthly when they are in need of food.

While 2019 was spent in the old food pantry, which was open only

three days a week, when combined with our 12 parish-based food pantries, we still helped meet the need for food for 98,195 of our neighbors. We also helped them improve their healthy eating habits. Working in conjunction with our charitable pharmacy, our pantries also began a more concerted effort to provide more fresh foods, more low-sodium options as well as fewer sweets, and greater educational programs about the kinds of foods that help people eat healthier meals.

The addition of the Ruth Jung Conway Teaching Kitchen in the new Neyer Outreach Center will further help this cause, as our neighbors can actually come together to prepare and partake in a healthy meal while learning the importance of eating right and the impact healthy foods have on cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

PHARMACY This was a milestone year for the Charitable Pharmacy. In September, it filled its 500,000th prescription. “Filling a half million prescriptions wasn’t even imaginable when we started 13 years ago,” said Pharmacy Director Mike Espel.

The retail value of those prescriptions is more than $64.2 million, and if it wasn’t for the Charitable Pharmacy, almost all of our neighbors would have to let their prescriptions go unfilled because of the cost. In the end, that creates potentially life-threatening health issues.

Fortunately, 90 percent of all of the Charitable Pharmacy’s medicine is now donated.

That results in a huge savings when combined with the 238 volunteers who contributed 18,000 hours of their time to the pharmacy this year, as well as the pharmacy students who helped as part of their education.

The Charitable Pharmacy grew at a rate of 11 percent, and filled 66,223 free prescriptions valued at more than $9.7 million this year. With the opening of the Neyer Outreach Center, the pharmacy is now open six days a week, so those numbers are expected to continue to grow.

Providing $9.7 million worth of free medicine comes at a price. While the pharmacy staff secured enough donated medicine from drug companies, doctors’ offices, long-term care pharmacies and other sources to fill a record 86 percent of the prescriptions from donated inventory, the remainder of the medicine had to be purchased.

Roughly half of that funding was secured through revenue generated at the Prescription Fore Fun Charitable Golf Outing, and Wine and Bourbon Tasting at Clovernook Country Club in July. Through support from sponsors, such as Protective Life Insurance Company for the golf outing and the Taft law firm for the wine and bourbon tasting, the events raised more than $82,000 this year.

DRIVES AND EVENTS CELEBRATION OF SERVICE

Bob Castellini, a longtime St. Vincent de Paul advocate and one of the “Great Living Cincinnatians,” was the focus of attention in May during our fifth annual Celebration of Service. In addition to serving on the boards of a wide range of organizations that focus on improving Cincinnati and those who live here, Castellini also owns the Cincinnati Reds, which was befitting since the Reds and St. Vincent de Paul both celebrated their 150th anniversaries last year.

More than 350 community leaders and honored guests filled the Cintas Center to honor Castellini, who praised the work of St. Vincent de Paul’s 1,000plus volunteer Vincentians, who work directly with the city’s poor and provide a vast majority of the direct services we offer to the community.

The banquet honors a member of the Greater Cincinnati community who has been influential in the success of St. Vincent de Paul and the overall community. Previous Celebration of Service honorees include Liz Carter, Dan Hurley, Mike Conaton and Fr. Barry Windholtz.

Those in attendance apparently shared his praise and his beliefs in Cincinnati, as they donated more than $370,000 in his name to benefit St. Vincent de Paul’s Liz Carter Homelessness Prevention Fund, which helps keep Cincinnati families safe in their homes.

RETROFITTINGS

Finding college students shopping at a St. Vincent de Paul thrift store is not unusual.

Our stores’ prices fit within a college student’s budget, and there’s definitely something on the racks to match whatever fashion statement they want to make. But for the last 17 years, fashion design students from the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning have been shopping the stores for a different reason.

They buy clothes, reimagine what they could be with a little altering, and then cut, pin and sew them into something a little more creative. Then they take to the runway, putting on a fashion show known as RetroFittings.

Blended with a shopping boutique, live auction, raffle and fundraising appeal, RetroFittings has become one of the city’s most sought after tickets and one of St. Vincent de Paul’s most beneficial events.

As the students showed off their fashion creations—enhanced by hair and makeup styling by Paul Mitchell: The School—the 450 guests got to bid on a wide range of auction items included a Cirque du Solei show, luxury suite at a Reds game, a New York City Broadway experience, a Tiffany & Co. watch, tickets to Elton John and a Cabo vacation.

By the time this year’s runway was cleared, the event raised more than $190,000.

DRIVES AND EVENTS STRIKE OUT HUNGER

With school out each summer, the need for food increases and the shelves of our food pantry become a little barren. To help restock the shelves, we team up with the Cincinnati Reds, iHeartMedia and WLWT for the “Strike Out Hunger” food drive in which Reds fans who donate three non-perishable food items are given a free ticket to an upcoming Reds game. This year, even the rain couldn’t stop Reds fans from helping their neighbors in need, as they donated more than three tons of food during the event, providing more than 5,000 additional meals to struggling families in Cincinnati.

FCC

FC Cincinnati is the newest game in town—and now our newest partner. This summer we kicked off a partnership with FC Cincinnati and Buffalo Wings and Rings and its Buffalove Foundation, creating a food drive to kick hunger.

St. Vincent de Paul volunteers spread out around Nippert Stadium and collected non-perishable food from FC fans as they made their way into the game against New York City FC. The drive generated enough food for 1,200 meals—a good start for what we hope will be a longtime partnership.

DAY TO DREAM

Every night, far too many children across Cincinnati go to sleep on the floor, on a sofa, on a pile of blankets or some other makeshift creation. They don’t have what for many is considered a given—a bed of their own—making an already hard life even harder. To help solve this issue, St. Vincent de Paul and Morris Furniture teamed up with WCPO-TV to create “Day to Dream,” a special event in which 50 children are surprised with the gift of their own bed. The third annual Day to Dream was held in August at the P&G MLB Cincinnati Reds Youth Academy in Roselawn.

Along with a new bed, the children received sheets, a comforter, blanket and pillow from Morris Furniture; a stuffed animal, books, hygiene supplies from Park National Bank; baseball glove and ball from the Cincinnati Reds; and lunch courtesy of Chick-fil-A. After the event, WCPO-TV was so moved by the happiness of the children it held a telethon to raise funds to buy even more beds. In just four hours, people called in and donated more than $20,000.

FAN/AC DISTRIBUTION

The tradition of helping our neighbors stay cool during the hottest days of the summer is something St. Vincent de Paul has been doing for 18 years— and this year was no different.

Starting in June, we partnered with WCPO, Braun Heating and Air Conditioning, Huntington Bank and many generous donors to hand out more than 1,030 free fans and air conditioners. They not only provide relief, but can also have a profound impact on the health of our neighbors.

Those who received the air conditioners were senior citizens and neighbors with documented respiratory or other health issues, allowing them to breathe easier and improve their quality of life.

DRIVES AND EVENTS FOOD FROM THE HEART

Each winter for the past 28 years, we’ve partnered with Kroger and WXIX-Fox 19 for our “Food from the Heart” food drive.

Residents are asked to donate while shopping at Kroger to help provide meals to neighbors in need—and they do so, abundantly. They dropped more than 63,000 pounds of food into our barrels, which is enough food for more than 50,000 meals.

WINTER COAT DISTRIBUTION

For some families, a clean, warm coat is a luxury that can be taken for granted, but that’s not the case for many of our neighbors.

That’s why for the last 17 winters, we have been helping keep our neighbors warm by collecting and distributing winter coats. In partnership with Gold Star Chili, WLWT, WARM 98.5, Kemba Credit Union and Lemasters Consulting, we collected new and gently used coats starting in October, and then held three distributions in different neighborhoods over the course of the winter.

By the time the events were finished, we gave away more than 1,700 coats—as well as hats, gloves and scarves—to neighbors from toddlers to senior citizens all to help alleviate the critical need.

Christmas Together puts the wish list from families in need into the hands of generous sponsors, who purchase and wrap the items on their behalf.

This year we brought together 300 families and sponsors.

The Teepe Giving Tree is courtesy of the Teepe Family Foundation. Local families are given an artificial Christmas tree decorated with $400 worth of gift cards, which are delivered by students from St. Xavier High School.

St. Xavier students also handed out food baskets to 283 families during Christmas.

DEAR FRIENDS, Both of us have been blessed to be involved at St. Vincent de Paul - Cincinnati for years. We have distributed Thanksgiving meals together, led Board meetings, celebrated special events and visited our neighbors in their homes, to mention a few of our wonderful experiences. We cherish countless special memories from those experiences. But throughout our time, we have also experienced moments of hopelessness. We have seen firsthand just how great the need is in our community, as demonstrated by long lines of neighbors stretched out the door and down the street on cold winter mornings, waiting to access services at SVDP. When moments of hopelessness do arise, it is generous people like you who consistently restore our hope. In 2016, SVDP decided to expand access to its services through the $12 million Upward Spiral Comprehensive Campaign. This would be accomplished through the construction of a new outreach center in the West End allowing us to offer all of our core services to neighbors simultaneously, six days a week. Additionally, neighbor-to-neighbor support in more than 70 Greater Cincinnati neighborhoods was to be increased by providing financial assistance to SVDP’s Conferences through our Conference Assistance Fund.

Well, the great news is that 402 people like you made donations ranging from $4 to $1 million to make the $12 million Upward Spiral Comprehensive Campaign a reality. We surpassed the $12 million goal in December. We also celebrated the grand opening of our new Don and Phyllis Neyer Outreach Center on November 8, and the Ed and Joann Hubert Family Conference Assistance Fund has been established. Of all we have experienced together at SVDP, witnessing your generosity has been one of the greatest gifts. We are grateful for your involvement in this historic effort.

Thank you for learning about our neighbors’ needs, for understanding how SVDP helps meet those needs and for responding so generously to our requests for your support. You have made our services more accessible for our neighbors, you have helped build a beautiful space that reminds our neighbors of their inherent dignity, and you have empowered Vincentians with the resources needed to respond to more neighbors.

Most importantly, thank you for believing, along with us, that through this effort, we all can move upward together. We are proud to share more about what you have helped accomplish through the Upward Spiral Comprehensive Campaign in the pages that follow.

ON A COLD TUESDAY MORNING IN NOVEMBER, Evelyn walked into the Don and Phyllis Neyer Outreach Center asking for help from the pharmacy. A clear hose looped under her nose and behind her ears, connecting to a nearly empty oxygen tank she borrowed from a friend. She was having trouble breathing, she told the pharmacist, but recently lost her job and had no income to afford her inhaler co-pays. Without hesitation, the pharmacy filled her rescue inhaler prescription and got her an appointment with a free on-site medical facility.

The Ed and Joann Hubert Family Conference Assistance Fund The Ed and Joann Hubert Family Conference Assistance Fund was established to empower Vincentians to respond to the needs of more neighbors seeking assistance. More Cincinnati families will find the help and hope they need for a brighter tomorrow, thanks to the generosity of Ed and Joann Hubert.

Ed (1942-2017) and Joann always believed in sharing their time, talent and treasure, and have generously supported many causes over the years. However, their connection to St. Vincent de Paul has a deeper significance. Around the turn of the 20th century, Ed’s grandmother emigrated to Cincinnati from Budapest. Some years later, she was married with three small children when her husband became ill. They did not have money for food, so they turned to SVDP. Ed’s father remembered volunteers from St. Vincent de Paul coming to their house with bags of potatoes and onions, keeping the family from going hungry.

“There are times in your life when you need a hand up. It might be money.

It might be emotional support. Providing that hand up is just something we can do. Everyone has to find their own way of helping out.”

The Ed and Joann Hubert Family Conference Assistance Fund will provide just that—a hand up—to local families today and for generations to come.
