Dear Friends, Our neighbors’ needs were great in 2018. Neighbors came to us in the midst of a crisis when they had nowhere else to turn. Some faced eviction and the possibility of having to live on the street. Some lost their job and couldn’t pay their bills. Some were just hungry. The need for assistance never seems to grow short, but, fortunately, neither does your support.

As the numbers on the next page show, we were able to help more people than ever before. That is a direct result of your generosity, and for that we say, “Thank you.”

As you look through this year’s Annual Report, you will also see examples of some of the ways we—or, really, YOU—have been able to provide support for our neighbors in need. We provided food for nourishment, coats for warmth, toys for happiness, medicine for health. We helped people find jobs, and provided them with clothing and furniture and birth certificates. We gave beds to those who were sleeping on the floor.

We visited their homes and provided help and, most importantly, hope.

As you read about all that we did this year, and as you look at the faces in the photos, please take a moment and consider not just the outcomes, but what would have happened if that support had not been there.

The amount of need out there is staggering.

These are real people with real needs, and in many cases we are the only safety net they have to catch them before they spiral downward. It’s a daunting task, and we can’t do it alone. That’s why we’re glad you’re here. There’s no one we would rather have helping us.

Conferences St. Vincent de Paul has a network of over 1,000 Vincentians (volunteers) at 56 parish-based, three youth and one special works Conferences who provide person-to-person assistance to struggling families through home visits.

During these visits, Vincentians may offer their neighbors support in the form of rent or utility assistance, food, clothing and furniture. More important than the material aid they give, however, Vincentians provide friendship and spiritual support to the people they meet.

The two school-based Conferences at Mount Notre Dame and Roger Bacon high schools provide students with an opportunity to help their neighbors through food and clothing drives, and other support.

St. Vincent de Paul Conferences helped 91,086 people through more than 19,663 home visits, with parish-based pantries providing food for 22,700 neighbors.

The Ozanam Center fosters a community of compassion, understanding, and justice through immersion experiences, retreats, trainings and more to connect people from diverse backgrounds, engage participants in poverty and justice issues in Cincinnati, and grow a commitment to long-term service and systemic change.

This year, the Ozanam Center for Service Learning held 69 retreats, welcoming 1,053 youth, college and adult participants. High school and college students experienced weeklong service immersion retreats where they explored issues of poverty and social justice while being encouraged to make a commitment to action for social change. Confirmation students were empowered to embrace their Christian calling to serve others.

Adult faith-based, civic and professional groups also participated in our Cincinnati Poverty Simulation, which highlights the realities of living in poverty and inspires action in solidarity with our neighbors in need.

Vincentian Volunteers Of Cincinnati

St. Vincent de Paul – Cincinnati offers young adults an opportunity to explore their faith and engage in service through Vincentian Volunteers of Cincinnati (VVC), a yearlong, faith-based, residential service program. Placed in key roles alongside staff at the Liz Carter Outreach Center, members spend their year developing professional skills while devoting their time to the service of others in need.

Last year, eight VVC members completed 16,556 hours of service at St. Vincent de Paul – Cincinnati. Since the program’s inception, 100 percent of participants have secured gainful employment, further education, or an additional year of service within six months of completing their VVC year of service.

Thrift Stores Smart shopping and good prices never seem to go out of style, which helps explain why our seven thrift stores continue to grow at an amazing pace.

Thrift Store and Donation Center Locations

The stores do more than just keep people looking good and saving them a lot of money, though. For many, they’re a source of hope.

This year, the stores provided $792,821 worth of free merchandise—clothing, furniture and household items—to our neighbors in need. They also accepted vouchers for the purchase of 1,209 beds through the Bob and Sylvia Rahe Mattress Fund, allowing a lot of people to sleep well at night.

In order to help meet the increased demand for shopping and savings, we also purchased a larger building next door to our Milford store this year, with the plans to double the size of the store—and the amount of merchandise we can sell or provide to our neighbors in need.

This comes on the heels of the expansion of the Evendale and Mason stores in 2017. Early indications are the new Milford store very well may become our second-busiest store.

Charitable Pharmacy Medicine is expensive. And for almost all of our neighbors, it’s too expensive. With inadequate insurance or income to cover the cost, they have no choice but to let their doctor-issued prescriptions go unfilled. In the end, it just creates a perpetual health issue.

Being able to provide free prescription medicine to keep our neighbors healthy—or in some cases, save their lives—is one of the greatest services we provide. And it’s also one of the greatest needs.

Providing $8.3 million worth of free medicine comes at a price.

While the pharmacy staff managed to secure enough donated medicine from drug companies, doctors’ offices and numerous other sources to fill more than 80 percent of the prescriptions at no cost, the remainder of the medicine had to be purchased.

Food Pantries The need for food never ends.

There will always be people who are hungry—for some, it’s a 365-day-a-year struggle—and many of them are our neighbors.

This year, our eight parish-based food pantries and the Carl and Edyth Lindner Choice Food Pantry in our Liz Carter Outreach Center helped meet the need for food for 98,682 of our neighbors.

Unlike many food pantries, our Lindner food pantry—as well as several of our Conference-based pantries—offers our neighbors the choice of which foods they want, including fruits, vegetables and proteins. Providing people the option of what they want to eat not only makes them happier, but it helps ensure the food doesn’t go to waste.

This year, our pantries also began a more concerted effort to work with our pharmacy and educational programs to provide the kinds of foods that help people eat healthier meals. By providing more fresh foods, more low-sodium options as well as fewer sweets, we help people understand the importance of eating right and the impact healthy foods have on cholesterol and blood sugar levels.

Drives & Events STRIKE OUT HUNGER AND FOOD FROM THE HEART Each summer, the need for food increases and the shelves of our food pantry become a little barren.

To help restock the shelves, we team up with the Cincinnati Reds, iHeartMedia and WLWT each summer for the “Strike Out Hunger” food drive in which Reds fans who donate three food items are given a free ticket to an upcoming Reds game.

This year, even the rain couldn’t stop Reds fans from helping their neighbors in need, as they donated more than three tons of food during the event, providing more than 5,300 additional meals to struggling families in Cincinnati.

Each winter, we face a similar situation, so for the past 27 years, we’ve partnered with Kroger and WXIX-Fox 19 for our “Food from the Heart” food drive. Residents are asked to donate food while shopping at Kroger to provide meals to neighbors in need—and they do so, abundantly. They provided more than 49,000 meals this year, and more than 1 million meals over the last 27 years.

DAY TO DREAM Every night, far too many children across Cincinnati go to sleep on the floor, on a sofa, on a pile of blankets or some other makeshift creation.

They don’t have what for many of us is considered a given—a bed of their own—making an already hard life even harder. They are deprived of a good night’s sleep.

To help solve the issue, St. Vincent de Paul and Morris Furniture teamed up with WCPO-TV to create “Day to Dream,” a special event in which 50 children are surprised with a gift of their own beds. The second annual Day to Dream was held in August at the P&G MLB Cincinnati Reds Youth Academy in Roselawn.

Along with a new bed, the children received sheets, a comforter, blanket and pillow from Morris Furniture, as well as two stuffed animals, gift cards from Plato’s Closet/Once Upon a Child, hygiene supplies from Park National Bank, Wiffle ball and bat from the Cincinnati Reds, and lunch courtesy of Chick-fil-A. After the event, WCPO-TV was so moved by the happiness of the children it held a telethon to raise funds to buy even more beds. In just four hours, people called in and donated more than $21,000.

Drives & Events CELEBRATION OF SERVICE One of St. Vincent de Paul’s longest tenured Advisory Board members was the center of attention—and the target of a few jokes—in May when we held our fourth annual Celebration of Service.

Since completing his degree and returning to Cincinnati, he has been a judge on the Marriage Tribunal, Master of Ceremonies for Archbishop Pilarczyk, Associate Pastor at St. Louis Church, and Rector of St. Peter in Chains.

Currently, he is Pastor of St. Rose Church in Cincinnati’s East End.

The banquet honors a member of the Greater Cincinnati community who has been influential in the success of St. Vincent de Paul and the overall community, and this year the honoree was the Rev. Barry Windholtz.

More than 400 community leaders and honored guests filled the Cintas Center to honor Fr. Barry, who believes that when blessed with many material things, it is important that one gives back both financially and by service to the community.

Fr. Barry is a Cincinnati native who was raised on the west side of town, graduated from the University of Cincinnati, and spent seven years in the business world before entering the seminary. After earning master’s degrees in both Divinity and Biblical Studies, he began what has been a 30-year tenure with the Catholic Church.

Those in attendance apparently have the same belief, and showed it by donating more than $366,000 in his name to benefit St. Vincent de Paul’s Liz Carter Homelessness Prevention Fund, which helps keep Cincinnati families safe in their homes.

Starting off as an associate pastor at Guardian Angels Church, he briefly left to obtain his master’s degree in Canon Law from St. Paul’s University in Ottawa, Canada.

Previous Celebration of Service honorees include Liz Carter, Dan Hurley and Mike Conaton.

In 2019, Cincinnati Reds owner Bob Castellini is the Celebration of Service honoree.

RETROFITTINGS Some things never seem to go out of style, and RetroFittings may very well be one of them.

For 15 straight years, we have partnered with the University of Cincinnati’s College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning (DAAP) to put on a fashion show that features the creative imaginations and design skills of DAAP students, who purchase merchandise from our thrift stores and rework it into a new, fashionable creation.

These looks are enhanced by students from Paul Mitchell: The School, who provide hair and makeup for each individual model.

While DAAP and Paul Mitchell students get to show off their creativity on the runway, the event also features boutique shopping, raffle prizes, a fundraising appeal, and a live and silent auction—all in an attempt to raise money to support our neighbors in need.

Auction items included vacation packages to New York, Florida, Chicago and Mexico, a yellow diamond necklace and access to a suite at a Reds game.

By the time this year’s runway was cleared, the event raised more than $169,000.

Drives & Events FAN/AC DISTRIBUTION The tradition of helping our neighbors stay cool during the hottest days of the summer is something St. Vincent de Paul has been doing for 17 years— and this year was no different.

Starting in June, we partnered with WCPO, Braun Heating and Air Conditioning, Huntington Bank and many generous donors to hand out more than 850 free fans and air conditioners during three distributions.

The fans and air conditioners not only provide relief, but can also have a profound impact on the health of our neighbors.

Those who received the air conditioners were senior citizens, had documented respiratory or other health issues, allowing them to breathe easier and improve their quality of life.

WINTER COAT DISTRIBUTION For some families, a clean, warm coat is a luxury that can be taken for granted, but that’s not the case for many of our neighbors. That’s why for the last 16 winters, we have been helping keep our neighbors warm by collecting and distributing winter coats.

In partnership with Gold Star Chili, WLWT, WARM 98.5, Kemba Credit Union and Lemasters Consulting, we collected new and gently used coats starting in October, and then held three distributions in different neighborhoods—Price Hill, West End and East Walnut Hills—over the course of the winter.

By the time the event was finished, we gave away 1,700 coats—as well as hats, gloves and scarves—to neighbors from toddlers to senior citizens all to help alleviate the critical need.

Drives & Events THANKSGIVING AND CHRISTMAS FOOD DISTRIBUTIONS A staple of the holidays is the family meal, and we had the opportunity to make sure thousands of our neighbors had food on their tables for Thanksgiving and Christmas by giving away more than 1,400 turkeys at Thanksgiving and 1,200 hams at Christmas—along with all of the fixings for a complete meal.

More than 100 volunteers from local businesses and high schools filled our Liz Carter Outreach Center and served as the engine behind the distribution, greeting each of the neighbors who lined the sidewalks outside of the building.

HOLIDAY PROGRAMS Far too many of our neighbors wake up Christmas morning without any presents under their tree. It’s especially difficult when those neighbors are children. That’s why each holiday season we hold four Christmas toy distributions—Angel Toy, Christmas Together, Teepe Giving Tree and Shop with a Bengal.

Christmas Together puts the wish list from families in need into the hands of generous sponsors, who purchase and wrap the items on their behalf. This year we brought together 300 families and sponsors.

Angel Toy allows parents to shop for presents for their children in our Liz Carter Outreach Center, while their kids are entertained on a separate floor with crafts, activities and pictures with Santa. This year, 364 families shopped at Angel Toy.

Local families are given an artificial Christmas tree decorated with $400 worth of gift cards, which are delivered by students from Mount Notre Dame High School.

Shop with a Bengal is a special Christmas tradition held in partnership with the Cincinnati Bengals, in which Bengals players take a group of children on a oncein-a-lifetime shopping spree. This year, three players gave 30 children $300 each to go through Toys R Us and pick out whatever they wanted.

Vehicles of Hope There are a lot of things that drive people to donate to St. Vincent de Paul. Sometimes those decisions are driven by what they don’t want to drive anymore. Beyond clothing and furniture, one of our largest donation methods is the Vehicles of Hope car donation program. Each year, St. Vincent de Paul raises more than $500,000 through the sale of donated cars, the proceeds of which go toward helping our neighbors in need.

150TH Anniversary On March 26, 1869, in a room in the Convent of the Sisters of St. Clare on Third Street in downtown Cincinnati—in a spot that is now part of Lytle Park— six gentlemen met to discuss an idea. The Society of St. Vincent de Paul was already firmly established in Europe, and making its way to the United States.

St. Louis already had a Council, and its leaders thought Cincinnati would be a good place to grow. Cincinnati, after all, was the seventh largest city in the country at the time, with a population of nearly 250,000.

Before the meeting was adjourned, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul was established in Cincinnati, and neighbors helping neighbors became the norm in the Queen City.

In 2019, the Society is celebrating our Cincinnati roots, holding events and celebrations throughout the year to mark the 150th anniversary of our founding.

Among the events to be noted are the annual Vincentian Mass and Retreat on March 30 to mark the formal date the Society was established, as well as the opening of the new Don and Phyllis Neyer Outreach Center in the fall.
