Continued Growth It has been a privilege and an honor to serve as President of the Phoenix Diocese Board of Director of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. My three year term ends as of October 1, 2017 and at that time, Steve Attwood, the newly elected president will replace me. Welcoming a New Board Member It has been extremely rewarding for me to be part of the continuing growth of our Society. In my term as president, I have been part of an ever expanding movement to provide our services to ever increasing number of people in need who live in our community. The financial support provided by our generous community has allowed us to meet these challenges. During my term as president, I have seen several monumental milestones of change. Specific projects that stand out to me include the initial dedication of our new urban farm facility and the dedication of our proposed new Ozanam Manor, which when completed will also allow us to expand our medical and dental clinics. We also were able to convert our Henry Unger Memorial Dining Room into a nightly housing facility to help house

I look forward to the day when I will attend the completion of these projects and to see when in the future, when there will be more housing to support people who are experiencing homelessness. During the 2017 St. Vincent de Paul presidential election, we were extremely fortunate to have two excellent candidates competing for the position of President. Mary Ann Hunter and Steve Attwood, who were both very qualified to serve as president. But as in all elections only one person can win and the Society members chose Steve Attwood. I look forward to working with Steve in my new position as “Past President” and am certain our membership will support him and I ask all of us to keep him in our prayers.

The Society of St. Vincent de Paul is an international non-profit organization dedicated to serving the poor and providing others with the opportunity to serve. The Phoenix Diocesan Council has been assisting central and northern Arizona families since 1946. Programs include services for the homeless, medical and dental care for the working poor, charity dining rooms, thrift stores, a transitional housing shelter and general assistance for individuals in need through 85 parish conferences of charity. OUR SUMMER ACTION HEROES AND PARTNERS
Summer can be an especially challenging time for families as children are out of school and unable to take advantage of school meal programs. Parents are paying higher utility bills and struggling to make ends meet. Several media and community partners came together to help us support people in need.
CBS 5 and Papa Murphy’s Team Up in June In its third year, CBS 5’s Summer Action Hero campaign is all about empowering people to take action. While the ability to fly and shoot spider webs may be amazing, the greatest superpowers are kindness and compassion. Throughout the month of June, Papa Murphy’s Take ‘N’ Bake Pizza hosted a statewide food drive. To encourage participation, Papa Murphy’s gave $3 off pizzas to those who brought in canned food donations. In addition to publicizing the campaign, CBS 5 hosted a live phone bank that ultimately garnered over $60,000 in donations to support St. Vincent de Paul’s food bank and family support programs!

12 News and Bashas’ Fill Food Bank Shelves This year’s 12 News Summer Food Drive collected over 2,000 food bank bags to help us feed hungry families. Community members were encouraged to donate at their local Bashas’ and Food City. Each food bank bag was filled with items most needed in our food bank, including protein sources like peanut butter, tune and beans. Thanks to Sonic, donors received a free meal coupon for supporting the community. In addition to hosting the food drive, 12 News brought a team of staff members to volunteer in our family dining room. Volunteers helped take dinner orders and served meals to over 50 families.

FLAGSTAFF SAN FRANCISCO DE ASIS CONFERENCE EDUCATION FUND
Provides Keys to Success Ever since Tessla B. was a little girl, she looked up to her mother, who was a nurse. She saw how she took care of people and helped them heal. “It’s an honorable job,” Tessla said. “I’ve always wanted to help people.” Tessla, who lives in Flagstaff with her husband and fouryear-old daughter, never lost sight of her goal of becoming a nurse, but life took her in a different direction. Like many young couples, Tessla and her husband struggle to make ends meet. While her husband works as a roofer, work opportunities vary by season and is nearly nonexistent during Flagstaff’s snowy winters. Tessla learned about St. Vincent de Paul’s food and financial assistance programs and started to periodically call for help when things got really tough. “The food bags were helpful, because I would sometimes go to check out at the grocery store and have to put things back,” Tessla said. “St. Vincent de Paul helped us with things like meat and other things we couldn’t afford.”
better themselves to better care for their family, but it’s hard to finish that last bit of schooling.” This is what drove the San Francisco de Asis Conference to incorporate Systemic Change into their Strategic Plan. This led to the formation of a Systemic Change Committee headed up by Kathy Paleski. She and her committee of Maureen Ringenoldus, Sheila Schill and Maya Moller developed a recommendation that was presented to the conference that identified education related candidates that the group could support with both education and other costs. The conference approved a budget from donor funding to help people like Tessla in the Flagstaff area. “We realized that if you help people gain skills to becoming successful, they can work themselves out of the situation they are in,” Kathy said. “Often times, they are the first in their family to pursue education.” Tessla and another nursing student, Marisa D., will be the first to benefit from the program. Since both Tessla and Marisa already receive tuition assistance through the Federal Pell Grant, St. Vincent de Paul will be supporting them by paying for a few household bills and gas to attend classes. In addition to financial support, each student is paired with a mentor who will coach and encourage them through the process.
Tessla’s situation is common, said Kathy Paleski, who volunteers in St. Vincent de Paul’s helpline at San Francisco de Asis Conference in Flagstaff. St. Vincent de Paul operates over 80 volunteer-run Conferences across central and northern Arizona. These Conferences are based out of Catholic churches and each Conference answers calls for help within its neighborhood.
“It’s like a weight lifted off of my shoulders,” said Marisa, who currently works as certified nursing assistant. “I don’t have any support, so I otherwise would be doing this on my own.” Marisa plans to ultimately work as nurse practitioner and open her own practice on the Indian Reservation, where her family resides. “There is a huge need for service on the Reservation,” Marisa said. “I want to make it easier for people to be close to their family and get care.”
Having volunteered for three years, answering calls from hundreds of people who need help with food, rent and utility bills, Kathy and others noticed a similar pattern.
The financial help is critical to each student’s success, but the support and encouragement are truly what empower Tessla and Marisa to success. “There a lot of low-income people who really need help and support, and to know that their community cares about them,” Tessla said. “They need to know that there are people who care and they’re not alone. That’s what I needed.”

BREAKING GROUND &
Celebrating Community Our first groundbreaking on a new building in over 25 years
On May 12th, nearly 200 community leaders, donors, volunteers, staff members and other special guests gathered to celebrate a milestone event in St. Vincent de Paul’s history—the first groundbreaking on a new building on our campus in over 25 years.
The event celebrated the first step in the construction of a new building that will house both our transitional shelter for older and disabled adults and outreach programs for homeless and working poor individuals and families. The capital effort will also allow for the expansion of our medical and dental clinic and significantly increase food production in our urban farm. To date, over $15 million has been raised to support our $16 million campaign goal.
It was a morning of joy, hope and gratitude—proof of all that is possible when a community comes together to care about each other and lift one another up. Executive Director Steve Zabilski, honored campaign donors, many of whom made significant commitments to support the project. Several donned hard hats and shovels to symbolically turn the ground that will become the hope and transformation of the people we serve for many years to come.

RESTORING HOPE, REBUILDING LIVES St. Vincent de Paul’s enhanced campus will increase our ability to feed, clothe, house and heal those who are struggling in our community. Building on our existing strengths as an organization and expanding collaborations with community partners, we not only will serve more people but also address some of the physical, economic and emotional barriers that prevent people from rebuilding their lives on their own. We have now begun a second phase of our campaign to create a $5 million general endowment to support our continued work, launched by a $1 million commitment that will match all endowment gifts dollar for dollar that are made by December 31, 2017.

Both work long shifts, overseeing staff and guest volunteers for the set up and breakdown of shelter operations, engaging with more than 250 guests a night, and ensuring the safety of all those sleeping and working in the shelter each night. It is not a glamorous job, yet it is a job that requires a lot of heart.

While it can be challenging, both agree that what the guests endure each day is much more difficult and unimaginable. “During the day, they’ve been rejected or put down or told that their housing didn’t go through,” says Ashly. “By the time they get here, they’re angry or defeated, and exhausted. Many times they just need a listening ear and want to be heard. Or even just giving someone a granola bar or a toothbrush will make their whole night. The small things make a huge difference,” says Liza. One unique aspect about the shelter is that many of the volunteers who set up and

Even more exciting, they’ve seen several transitions - from the streets and into their own homes. “What I’ve seen over the years in my work with homeless clients, is that you know it’s in them to change and that they want to change. They just need encouragement, compassion, and someone to say to them, ‘You can do this,’” says Ashly. Unfortunately, the process of ending homelessness is not as simple as finding an apartment. After seeing a few guest volunteers obtain apartments, Kim, Ashly and Liza began
“Several years ago, we had a move-in package that included a bed, dresser, couch, coffee table, kitchen table, bathroom items…the basic needs,” says Kim. “However, because of limited resources and decreased funding, this package became less and less. I found out an individual was living in his new apartment for nearly five weeks and didn’t have any furniture. I asked myself, how as an individual and as a community, can we respond to this need? How can we expect people to live independently and sustain their housing if they don’t even have toilet paper?” Having built strong relationships with their guest volunteers, Kim, Liza and Ashly decided to help however they could, even if it meant obtaining items from their own homes. They started asking around and before too long, were receiving donations from people in the community who believe in the mission of SVdP and in the shelter. Kim collaborated with multiple departments within St. Vincent de Paul, including transportation, security and the thrift stores, to obtain, store and deliver these basic need items and furniture pieces to guest volunteers who recently ended their homelessness. “It’s a lot easier to sleep at night if you have a bed to sleep in, versus the floor of your own apartment,” says Kim. Kim says everyone involved has been more than happy to help. So far, they have helped furnish 10 apartments.“The delivery is very emotional. The clients are not only happy to receive these donated items, but they’re so happy to see a familiar face,” says Liza. “And when we get to see them thriving outside of the shelter, it’s an incredible experience. Going above and beyond like this is my favorite part of the job.” While many might think that these guests at the shelter are just receiving a meal and a sleeping mat, it is so much more.“The shelter has become a safe place for people to go,” says Kim. “It is more than a place to lay your head down at night. It transforms lives. We truly do feed, clothe, house and heal.”

One of the greatest privileges of serving in Arizona is being able to work with a generous community of people who care about the well-being of our state. Our friends not only host food drives and send volunteers, they donate generously to support our work.
Raising Cane’s Raising Cane’s is renowned for their passion for community giving both financially and through team volunteering. Raising Cane’s gives back in a variety of ways, and on July 11, team members volunteered in the Dream Center and the Family Evening Meal. Raising Cane’s not only served a wonderful chicken dinner to our guests—every day in their restaurants they serve their local communities through a deeply philanthropic corporate culture.
AARP On June 21, AARP sponsored a luncheon in the Hall of Banners, fewaturing speaker and author Amy Goyer. Amy is an acknowledged expert in the field of caregiving for aging parents. She gave an interactive talk and answered questions for an audience of more than 90. Thanks to Alex Juarez of AARP for partnering with us for this educational event.

Charles Schwab Charles Schwab’s annual weeklong volunteer event broke records this year at SVdP. They showed exceptional generosity and team spirit through over $25,000 in financial support, hundreds of volunteer hours, and special projects—refurbishing a recordbreaking number of bicycles and making over 15,000 peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
Humana Humana team members assembled over 600 “Snack Pack Lunches” for the Dream Center. Each bag was filled with healthy snack items and also included a “surprise” of a coloring book and crayons. Thank you, Humana, for bringing creativity to our Dream Center while keeping kids’ nutrition front and center!
Even Stevens One of SVdP’s newest partners, Even Stevens Sandwiches, donates a portion of their profits from all sandwiches sold in metro Phoenix. Even Stevens is a craft sandwich shop with a cause, evidenced by their motto: “Eat to Give.”
Voya Financial Our outreach programs to those experiencing homelessness are always in need of shoes. Thanks to Voya Financial’s shoe drive, this March we received over 900 pairs of shoes – ready for those who need a new pair of sneakers to get them back on their feet and ready for a new day.

Bank of America SVdP was recently honored by a $20,000 gift in support of our dining rooms. This gift was part of Bank of America’s Social Campaign, where during the last week of June team members distributed a total $775,000 to over 30 local nonprofits.
Italian Association of Arizona Sponsored by the City of Scottsdale and hosted by the Italian Association of Arizona, the 4th annual Italian Festival brought food, music, artistry, and more to Scottsdale for two days in March. A portion of the proceeds benefited St. Vincent de Paul—grazie mille to our Italian amici!

CenturyLink For SVdP’s “Backpack Buddies Campaign,” CenturyLink provided a matching challenge grant opportunity. With help from media partner KTAR, the challenge raised over $31,000 to support our mission!

GRANT’S EAGLE SCOUT PROJECT
“I had the privilege of serving at a local homeless shelter last year, so when the time of my eagle project came around I knew this was what I wanted to do,” Grant said.
This summer, Phoenix saw record-breaking temperatures as high as 120 degrees. That’s why Grant Gaylord’s Eagle Scout project came in perfect timing for SVdP’s Ministry to the Homeless program. Grant, a Brophy student, Boy Scout and volunteer donated 150 backpacks filled with essential items for heat relief. “I had the privilege of serving at a local homeless shelter last year, so when the time of my eagle project came around I knew this was what I wanted to do,” Grant said. To help fund the project, Grant hosted a carwash fundraiser where he raised over $1,000 for the supplies, which included water bottles, pain reliever, socks, sunscreen, and hand sanitizer. Eagle Scout status is a lifelong title reached by only four percent of Boy Scouts of America. While the project may be done, Grant is just getting started. What is your favorite meal at SVdP’s Family Dining Room? FRANK age 14 “I really like the steak, chicken wings, and spaghetti. I get a salad every time I come in and I usually put lettuce, tomato, cucumber, turkey, ham and cheese in it.”
VICTORIA age 5 “My favorite food here is tacos with cheese! I like when the tacos have meat in them.”
JOSE age 8 “I LOVE pizza. But when it’s not a Friday Pizza Night, I like to eat fruits and vegetables, like carrots, strawberries, oranges and watermelon. I also like the way broccoli looks, like little trees, but I don’t like the way it tastes.”
SAREA age 8 “My favorite thing to eat here is the cottage cheese. I get it from the salad bar every time my family comes here. I like to eat it with tomatoes.”
MIGUEL age 10 “I like eating fruit salads. I’ll get a bunch of different fruits from the salad bar and I’ll make my own “salad” at the table. My favorite fruits are strawberries, watermelon, oranges, peaches, apples, sour apples, bananas and red raspberries. I LOVE red raspberries.”
LIZBETH age 11 “I love the meatloaf here; they make it really good. I like eating it with the stringy green vegetables that they serve with it. I forget what they’re called, but I like them.”
