Did you know you can time-travel at SVA Libraries? Welcome to the Retro Game Lounge, where you might find yourself in 1985, sitting across from a boxy, old rabbit-eared TV. Or you might step inside and find yourself playing Nintendo in the early aughts. The Retro Game Lounge offers multiple gaming stations, 750 games, and a nostalgic glow thanks to what student Zina Zhao (BFA 2026 Advertising) calls its “suburban-basement visuals.” Soak in the vibes, understand how graphics and game design have changed over time, and get some inspiration for your own designs, all while having fun with friends. Librarian David Pemberton has been working to make the Retro Game Lounge happen since Library West opened in 2016, and, last summer in 2025, the room was finally built and opened to students for the fall semester. Video games have played a role in SVA Libraries’ collections for 20 years now, but New York Public Library offered a game-changer when they donated Nintendo (1985) and Super Nintendo (1991) systems, games, peripherals (zappers and specialty controllers), Nintendo Power Magazines, posters, and strategy guides.

“Next Up” series showcases up-and-coming voices, each contributing a part to an emerging art scene.

From Risograph prints to oil-on-canvas paintings, the work on view at SVA Galleries’ “Next Up” exhibition series displayed the breadth of current students’ creativity. In January and February, SVA Galleries hosted the second annual juried exhibition series, “Next Up,” consisting of three shows held in the College’s Chelsea, Gramercy, and Flatiron gallery spaces. Introduced in 2025 as a reimagining of SVA’s tradition of showcasing emerging student talent, the works in each “Next Up” exhibition are chosen by a prestigious group of notable alumni. This year, the series featured the multidisciplinary work of 52 students representing 11 of the College’s 30 undergraduate and graduate departments.

The “Next Up” series brought together more than just a diverse use of media and materials. This unique opportunity made space for students to professionally display their work at the College’s public-facing galleries, merging the students’ inner campus life with the broader art world. Graduate students hung their work alongside undergraduate students. Alumni served as jurors, as if passing the baton, or rather brush, to the upcoming artists currently in the midst of their studies. Considering how “Next Up” acts as a nexus linking media, students, alumni, and the public, it’s in the spirit of the show that the three jurors each dedicate time and experience to creating hubs for artists and other creative professionals to form social, professional, and collaborative bonds.

Juried exhibitions have been a crucial part of the SVA fabric for more than 30 years, serving as a means for students’ achievements to be recognized by a group of notable alumni. Artists are selected from a large pool of applicants to participate in the annual SVA Galleries call for entries. Submissions undergo a rigorous examination of presented materials, including documentation of work and artist statements. Jurors are selected to represent the wide range of SVA’s creative community across the worlds of design, fine arts, illustration, and the moving image.
