T h e O t h e r S i d e o f t h e S h te t l Speaker: Golda Werman Golda Werman was born in Germany, lived in the United States and came on Aliyah in 1967 with her husband and three children – a fourth child was born in Israel. She has a Ph.D. in English literature and, between teaching and family responsibilities, wrote a book about the Jewish sources of Paradise Lost.

The trial of John Demjanuk served as a catalyst for Golda to devote her efforts to translating books from Yiddish, thereby making them accessible to the nonYiddish-reading public. Golda will give us insight into the important work of preserving a window into a vanished world.

W WEE M MO OU UR RN N JJU UN NEE W WA ALLK KEER R Love of Zion and optimism marked the life of National President June Walker, who died recently in New Jersey. June didn't let her illness overtake her even while undergoing treatment, for seven years, including her Presidency of Hadassah and also after she was elected Chairperson of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations (51 organizations of which Hadassah is the largest). We miss her intelligence, her good humor and her love for people.

I'll always cherish the day during the worst times of the Intifada when the Young Judaeans were on lockdown in their dorm. June invited the whole Year Course for Moroccan dinner at a restaurant, transporting them with guards. I love the photo of her in a bulldozer breaking ground on the Judaean Youth Hostel, and remember how she personally moved the first child from the old Emergency Room to the new Center for Emergency Medicine. We glowed when she led the procession of newly minted honorary doctors at the University of Haifa this summer and spoke for the entire group.

We part from June Walker with profound sadness. We know her memory will be for a blessing.

BOOK CLUB NEWS

Welcome back after what I hope was a restful and enjoyable summer.!

Everyone should have received a Hadassah Israel “Every 10 x 10 counts” card. If you have not received a card, please call the Hadassah office, 02623-1411 and it will be mailed to you. When you have completed the folder you can either mail a cheque for NIS 100 to Hadassah- Israel or bring the folder to one of our monthly meetings.

The cost of everything has been rising and with it our expenses at the Tamar Chapter. Therefore, beginning with our September 18th general meeting, we are asking for a contribution of NIS 10 per meeting from each person. We thank you for your co-operation and understanding and look forward to your participation in the many activities that we have planned. We want to hear your ideas for new projects and undertakings, so please join us in making this a successful year of the Tamar Chapter.

And now that our yarn stock has been increased, all those (not only Hadassah members) who can knit or crochet are asked to help create booties for babies, caps in all sizes (babies to adults – who are undergoing chemotherapy), laprobes for children in wheelchairs and blankets for babies and young children.

Your help keeps this project going so if you knit or crochet or have friends who do and can help, please call Ruth Robbins at 02-673-3986.

The Hadassah College building is the site of Hadassah's first hospital. In 1918, the American Zionist Medical Unit sent from the US took over the old Rothschild Hospital building.

Another important event happened that year: Hadassah started the first nursing school in pre-state Israel. Opening the western-style nursing school was an enormous achievement for medicine, but it was also a breakthrough for women. Until it opened, there was no post-high school education for women. Word of mouth brought applicants from around the yishuv (Jewish community in pre-State Israel). Then, too, modesty was an issue. Young women rarely left home before they were married, and parents were reluctant to send them to a Jerusalem dorm until a stern housemother was appointed.

Today, the nursing school is run as part of the Hebrew University, but the Hebrew University didn't open until 1925, four years after our first nurses graduated! Emphasis on women's education has always been a Hadassah core value.
